Abstract:Conflicts and tensions among major powers are often seen as clashes of interests between entities with significant influence. Nevertheless, from a historiographical standpoint, one would challenge the validity of such a simplistic view. The themes of nations that have to be considered full are undeniably formed by comprehensive historical and cultural components. Hence, it is essential to comprehensively evaluate cultural disparities to have a comprehensive understanding of interstate conflicts. This research uses case studies and qualitative methodologies to conduct a comparative analysis of the ideologies and national value identities that underlie Chinese-American interactions during the last decade. It focuses on the cultural distinctions inherited from China and the United States in order to get a deeper understanding of these connections. This research posits that the concept of democracy is firmly ingrained in the cultural and political fabric of these societies, giving rise to divergent ideologies. Numerous pieces of evidence indicate that the cultural aspects of a country significantly influence its political evolution.

Abstract:Chinese-Japanese relations have become increasingly tense in recent years. It might be concluded superficially that the recent tensions originated from the historical issues and the bilateral sovereignty disputes over some islands. However, these tensions are deeply rooted in the structural contradictions of these bilateral relations, such as the conflicting national strategies of China and Japan, the relative balance of power between them, and the discrepancy of their interests in their games against the background of macro transition of the overall strategic pattern of the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, the U.S. strategic dilemma in this gaming process adds destabilizing factors to the development of China-Japan bilateral relations. The outcomes of the China-Japan tensions not only affect the rise and fall of the relative strengths of these two countries, but also have major influences over the general strategic arrangements of East Asia and the whole Asia-Pacific. Therefore, it is very meaningful to probe the deep-rooted causes of the Chinese-Japanese conflicts and to observe current China-Japan relations from the strategic perspective because some solutions might be discoverd in this way.

Abstract:<span>Recent scholarship suggests that the thawing of diplomatic relations between China and Japan has caused a readjustment of Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative and Tokyo's Free and Open Indo-Pacific Vision towards an emerging complementarity. Through careful process-tracking, elite interviews, and analysis of Chinese and Japanese primary sources, this article instead demonstrates how, outside of the East Asian spotlight, Sino-Japanese geo-economic competition continues in South Asia and the Mekong subregion, fueled by power politics and a mutual distrust of each other's initiatives. On the basis of this evidence, this article qualifies Sino-Japanese interactions as a quest and denial for spheres of influence, whereas the Japanese government aims at denying Chinese spheres of influence. In doing so, this article highlights how Japanese proactivism from Sri Lanka to Thailand, via infrastructure and government financing, has become a driver of growing non-traditional security cooperation with India, the U.S., and Australia.</span>

Abstract:This thesis analyzes Japan's comprehensive development since World War II, and the trend of Japan's economic, political, military, and diplomatic strategy at the start of the 21st century. Based on this analysis, certain predictions are made. The challenges to Sino-Japanese relations resulting from economics and trade, political Right-deviationism in Japan, the influence of public opinion on bilateral relations, the American element, and the Taiwan issue are reviewed. In recent years Sino-Japanese political relations have deteriorated as the Japanese government has carried out a great-power policy featuring Right-deviationism. The current situation features cool political relations in a period of high economic and trade relationships. Economic relations must be curbed while political relations are being cooled to a certain extent. This requires that both China and Japan make joint efforts to improve long-term bilateral relations.

Abstract:This article examines the Chinese :assessment of and responses toward the Japanese "Free and Open Indo-Pacific" (FOIP) concept against the background of evolving Sino-Japanese relations. Addressing both its security and economic concerns, the FOIP is Tokyo's top-level regional strategy design in the context of China's rise. The development of the Japanese FOIP has been fluctuating with the evolution of Sino-Japanese relations and the emerging Sino-U.S. strategic contest over the past decade. The complexity and the fluid nature of the Japanese FOIP has prompted varying assessments and policy recommendations :among Chinese analysts, which can be roughly divided into three categories: the hardline approach, the hedging approach, and the docking approach. Meanwhile, remarks of Chinese officials on the Japanese FOIP retnain elusive, carefully differentiating between the Indo-Pacific strategy of the United States and that of Japan. All of these aspects reveal the complexity and flexibility of China's policies. 'the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent domestic changes of Japan and the U.S. have further complicated geopolitical and geoeconomic tensions. As a consequence, the Sino-Japanese relationship has become awkward once again.

Abstract:The East China Sea (ECS) is gaining an increasingly central role in Sino-Japanese relations as it is crucial to the economic development and political affirmation of both countries, for whom the main sea routes crossing the ECS offer vital arteries for trade and energy imports. For the past year and a half, the ECS has attracted considerable international attention because of the flare-up of tensions over the sovereignty of the Japanese-controlled Senkaku Islands. This small group of islands is also claimed by the authorities in Beijing and known in Chinese as Diaoyu. Is war looming? Are we seeing an escalation spiral that will ultimately set the two countries on a collision course? The article argues that the current tensions should be seen in the wider context of the increased strategic significance of the ECS. For there are two different types of disputes here. One concerns sovereignty over the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands; the other concerns the demarcation of the Chinese and Japanese maritime borders and exclusive economic zones (EEZ) as defined by the United Nation Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). This distinction is important because sovereignty on land is different from sovereignty at sea. The former is connected to a vital national interest and historically, represented a primary reason for war. The latter focuses on functional rights over bodies of water included in the EEZ, not on the actual ‘ownership’ of the maritime realm. Accordingly, the article argues that seapower is going to play a crucial role in the projection of Japanese and Chinese power and status in the ECS and in the evolution of Sino-Japanese relations more generally. Significantly, Naval Defence doctrines in both countries have evolved greatly over recent years.

Abstract:The role of values in Sino-Japan relations in the post-war era has long been ignored,while the tangible economic interests are often rendered a dominant position in this bilateral structure.This paper argues that Japan's diplomacy toward China can be roughly classified into three types,namely circumvention and surpassing,persistence and challenging,linkage and integration,based on the paradigm of values and interests,manifested in the connection and interaction between the value proposition from the spiritual realm and the interest appeals from the realistic perspective.Their profound impact demonstrates that values have been playing a special and increasingly distinctive role in the postwar Sino-Japan relations.

Abstract:Beijing and Tokyo are currently involved in a zero-sum battle for soft power. Both governments are actively trying to shape how third party actors understand contested matters in their bilateral relationship. The dispute over the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands is the most obvious flashpoint in this ongoing struggle for hearts and minds. A soft power battle might seem like an innocent endeavour, but by entrenching enmity and legitimizing armed conflict, it might actually translate into one where hard power takes centre stage. Indeed, that the dissemination and entrenchment of affective identity narrative make violence seem normal, natural, realistic or perhaps even inevitable is the greatest danger associated with the ongoing Sino-Japanese dispute. However, if both parties were to agree to let the International Court of Justice settle their discord, the islands dispute could provide them with a chance to boost their respective soft power and lay the groundwork for a more peaceful order in East Asia. The article thus argues that the Sino-Japanese soft power battle contains both well-known pitfalls and a less well-known promise.

Abstract:Many scholars argue that economic interdependence and more extensive economic ties between countries decreases the risk of violent conflict between them. However, despite considerable research on the “capitalist peace” at the macro or dyadic level, there has been less attention to its possible individual-level microfoundations or underpinnings. We argue that public perceptions about economic ties with other states and the costs of conflict should influence the expected constraints on the use of force for leaders. Actual high interdependence and potential economic costs may not suffice to create political constraints on the use of force if people are unaware of the degree of interdependence or fail to understand the benefits of trade and the likely economic costs of disruptive conflict. We examine the linkages between individual perceptions about economic interdependence and their views on conflict and peace through a survey experiment, where we ask respondents in Japan about approval for belligerent actions in a territorial dispute with China and varying information about economic ties. Our findings indicate that greater knowledge and information about economic interdependence affects attitudes about territorial disputes and increases support for peaceful solutions with China.

Abstract:This paper takes the China-Japan relations in the 1990s as the object of study, and through analyzing the historical situation of the two countries in the 1990s, it explores the interplay between the economic factors and political relations between China and Japan. Based on the state of China-Japan economic and political relations in the 1990s, this study analyzes the differences between Japan and China in the 1990s based on data and historical facts, and from the perspective of the political and economic development of Japan and China in the 1990s. At the same time, this study analyzes specific instances of ODA loan freezes and extensions triggered by political frictions between China and Japan based on data and historical facts, etc., to clarify the link between the two countries’ economic and political aspects preliminarily. This study concludes that the economic and political relations between China and Japan are mutually influential and cannot be discussed only based on the influence of one side on the other, but should fully consider the combination of the two.
The "China Factor" in East Asian Economic Cooperation:A Multi-angled Analysis

Abstract:China is an increasingly important element in all economic cooperation in the East Asian region today. China’s high economic growth since its reforms and "open door" policies, and its internal and external transformations, have contributed to massive shifts in the structure of economic cooperation in the region. For one, Japan’s proposed "geese-flying formation" in the 1970s and 1980s has given way to one more akin to a "rhombic structure"-formed by the larger economies of China and Japan, and the two smaller economies of ASEAN and South Korea-of economic cooperation today. For better appreciation of the "China factor" in economic cooperation in the region, this article offers four new perspectives on China’s impact by reviewing: 1) China socio-economic achievements thus far; 2) the sustainability of its developments and its possible effects; 3) its economic weight at the global level; and 4) its stature in the structure of East Asian economic cooperation. China today already possesses adequate economic capacity to influence both global and regional economies. This capacity, without doubt, is going to expand further, as China achieves greater, and sustainable, economic growth in future.

Abstract:With regard to the trend,study and discussion on the Sino-Japanese dispute over the sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands,scholars both at home and abroad have fallen into a narrow path of considering the Diaoyu Islands as they stand.As a matter of fact,at present,the 1945 Potsdam Proclamation is an international treaty that still has the legal binding force and forming the foundation of post-war international political and legal order,and no state is able,willing or dares to deny.Only taking the Proclamation as the basis and taking it as the pointcut that at present,the scope of Japanese sovereignty is confined to four islands i.e.,Honshu,Hokkaido,Kyushu and Shikoku) under the international law,looking at the overall situation and formulating the overall strategy concerning the island sovereignty and maritime rights and interests op China towards Japan,can China take up the status activus and superiority,thus impelling to more effectively resolve the dispute between China and Japan over the Chinese island sovereignty and maritime rights and interests encompassing the issue of the sovereignty of the Diaoyu Islands.

Abstract:We study the impact of nationalism and interstate frictions on international economic relations by analyzing market reaction to adverse shocks to Sino-Japanese relations in 2005 and 2010. Japanese companies with high China exposure suffer relative declines during each event window; a symmetric effect is observed for Chinese companies with high Japanese exposure. The effect on Japanese companies is more pronounced for those operating in industries dominated by Chinese state-owned enterprises, while firms with high Chinese employment experience lower declines. These results emphasize the role of countries’ economic and political institutions in mediating the impact of interstate frictions on firm-level outcomes.

The study employs a comparative analysis approach to leverage data from reputable sources such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, and official reports from Taiwan and China. The analysis of trade patterns reveals a consistent increase in volumes, showcasing a maturing economic relationship marked by the diversification of traded goods. Cross-Strait investments, particularly in critical sectors like technology and finance, highlight strategic collaborations and sector-specific interdependence. Financial relationships, examined through IMF reports and national financial institutions, demonstrate a deepening integration of banking ties despite geopolitical complexities. The study employs theoretical frameworks such as Complex Interdependence Theory and Political Economy Theory to interpret findings. The data analysis includes time-series analysis techniques to identify seasonality, trends, and cyclical patterns, providing insights for policymakers and businesses. The study's significance lies in its contribution to understanding the multifaceted nature of cross-Strait economic relations, emphasizing the endurance of economic interactions despite political complexities. The findings provide a nuanced foundation for improved bilateral relations, offering policymakers insights for strategic adjustments and fostering sustainable economic collaboration. Abstract:China and India are going to be major economic powers in Asia. These two countries' economic development has been getting the world's attention. With bilateral trade and trade friction between the two countries are inevitable, the two countries have recognized the importance of regional economic cooperation and their roles in solving bilateral trade friction. This paper, from the perspective of political economy, analyzes the competitiveness and complementarity of economic and trade relations between the two countries. It sorts out the process and the status of the participations in regional economic cooperation, and explores the possibility of establishing a free trade area in China and India. The article suggests that, for bilateral economic and trade cooperation, China should strive to adjust the industrial structure in order to avoid direct competition due to the convergence of the national economic strategies between the two countries.

Abstract:This article examines the 2008 Sino-Japanese Consensus on the East China Sea in the context of the seemingly vague obligations in the Law of the Sea Convention regarding overlapping claims for states to omake every effort to enter into provisional arrangements of a practical nature.o The conclusion reached is that, while the claims of the two states in the East China Sea are based in good faith, there is a lack of reciprocity in the Consensus that helps explain it's fragile nature.
