Abstract:We have developed a chemo- and site-selective aerobic oxidation of methylbenzenes to aromatic aldehydes. It offers several advantages, including the use of an environmentally friendly catalyst (5 mol% of inexpensive ferric chloride hexahydrate), the utilization of air as a green oxidant, mild conditions, scalability (up to 5 g scale), and operational simplicity. Furthermore, the reaction demonstrates remarkable chemo-selectivity and site-selectivity. This is evident from the lack of over-oxidation leading to carboxylic acids. Additionally, the reaction effectively converts substrates with multiple methyl groups into mono-aromatic aldehydes. The synthetic potential of this approach lies in the ability to modify complex molecules at a late stage, and conversion of inexpensive compounds into high-value fine chemicals. We expect that these characteristics will facilitate the widespread adoption of this reaction in future applications.

Abstract:A Fe(III)-promoted highly selective photo-oxidation of benzylic C–H bond delivering relative carbonyl products is reported. By altering the concentration of ferric salt, methylarenes can be selectively oxidized under UV irradiation to furnish aromatic aldehydes or acids, respectively. By this protocol, the oxidation of ethylarenes provides the corresponding acetophenones. The reaction is inferred to involve divergent pathways in different concentrations of catalyst for the alternative selectivity between aldehydes and aicds. The reusable catalyst, high conversion and selectivity make this oxidation a green and economic protocol for the synthesis of aromatic carbonyl compounds.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of olefins to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones under mild reaction conditions has attracted considerable interest, since alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones can serve as synthetic precursors for various downstream chemical products. The major inherent challenges with this chemical oxidation are chemo- and regio-selectivity as well as environmental concerns, i.e. catalyst recycle, safety and cost. Using atmospheric oxygen as an environmentally friendly oxidant, we found that a metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed with Mn and a tetrazolate ligand (CPF-5) showed good activity and selectivity for the allylic oxidation of olefins to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones. Under the optimized conditions, we could achieve 98% conversion of cyclohexene and 87% selectivity toward cyclohexanone. The combination of a substoichiometric amount of TBHP (tert-butylhydroperoxide) and oxygen not only provides a cost effective oxidation system but significantly enhances the selectivity to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones, outperforming most reported oxidation methods. This catalytic system is heterogeneous in nature, and CPF-5 could be reused at least five times without a significant decrease in its catalytic activity and selectivity.

Abstract:Here a palladium-catalyzed oxidation method for converting alkylarenes into the aromatic ketones or benzaldehydes with water as the only oxygen donor is reported. This C–H bond oxidation functionalization does not require other oxidants and hydrogen acceptors, and H2 is the only byproduct. Abstract:Aldehyde is one of most synthetically versatile functional groups and can participate in numerous chemical transformations. While a variety of simple aromatic aldehydes are commercially available, those with a more complex substitution pattern are often difficult to obtain. Benzylic oxygenation of methylarenes is a highly attractive method for aldehyde synthesis as the starting materials are easy to obtain and handle. However, regioselective oxidation of functionalized methylarenes, especially those that contain heterocyclic moieties, to aromatic aldehydes remains a significant challenge. Here we show an efficient electrochemical method that achieves site-selective electrooxidation of methyl benzoheterocycles to aromatic acetals without using chemical oxidants or transition-metal catalysts. The acetals can be converted to the corresponding aldehydes through hydrolysis in one-pot or in a separate step. The synthetic utility of our method is highlighted by its application to the efficient preparation of the antihypertensive drug telmisartan.

Abstract:A silica supported cobalt (II) Salen complex catalyst has been successfully employed in the aerobic oxidation of alkyl aromatics at atmospheric pressure in the presence of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). The reaction is particularly selective for the oxidation of the benzylic CH2 group and the major product obtained was ketone. The immobilized catalyst can be easily recovered and reused for at least four reaction cycles without any significant loss of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:Biocatalytic oxidation reactions of toluene derivates to the corresponding aldehydes are typically challenged by regio‐ and chemoselectivity issues. In this contribution we address both challenges by a combined reactant‐ and reaction engineering approach. We demonstrate that the peroxygenase‐catalysed transformation of ring‐substituted toluenes proceeds highly regioselectively in benzylic position. Furthermore, neat reaction conditions not only enable attractive product concentrations (up to 185 mM) but also result in highly chemoselective oxidations to the aldehyde level.

Abstract:m-Disubstituted arenes are important in various fields but difficult to be directly synthesized by the classical methods in the case of two electron-donating substituents due to the o,p-orientation. Dehydrogenative aromatization from non-aromatic cyclohexenone motifs and nucleophiles via 1,2- and 1,4-addition to produce m-disubstituted arenes is promising as the novel process overcoming the intrinsic problems derived from using aromatic compounds as the substrates; however, there are no reports on tandem (one-step) synthesis via simultaneous 1,2- and 1,4-addition or m-phenylenediamine derivative synthesis via dehydrogenative aromatization because of the quite difficult product selectivity control. Here, by utilizing unique dehydrogenation catalysis of CeO2-supported Au nanoparticles, we have developed tandem aerobic oxidation to various m-phenylenediamine derivatives via selective dehydrogenative aromatization from cyclohexenone motifs and secondary amines. In addition, the product selectivity switch to enaminones or N,N-disubstituted anilines was also achieved by tuning reaction conditions.

Abstract:Petroleum-derived aromatic compounds play irreplaceable roles in an extremely broad spectrum of industries. Production of value-added aromatic chemicals from renewable resources has been attractive and yet remains a great challenge for sustainable chemistry. We report herein a tandem catalytic oxidative aromatization approach that converts eucalyptus oil mixtures, renewable furans and dienes + dienophiles, to structurally diversified benzene derivatives. Eucalyptus oil mixtures undergo tandem dehydration–oxidative dehydrogenation to <i>p</i>-cymene. The Diels–Alder reaction between furans and dienophiles provides 7-oxanorbornene intermediates, which must be hydrogenated before dehydration–oxidative dehydrogenation to benzenoids in order to prevent retro-Diels–Alder side reactions. Cyclohexene intermediates resulted from DA reactions between nonfuran dienes and dienophiles undergo oxidative dehydrogenation to benzenoids. A heteropoly acid silicomolybdic acid acts as the catalyst, and molecular oxygen is the terminal oxidant for the key oxidative dehydrogenation reaction that is common for all the above reactions. Abstract:The selective oxidation of benzylic C-H bonds is a pivotal transformation in organic synthesis. Undoubtedly, achieving efficient and highly selective aerobic oxidation of methylarenes to benzaldehydes has been highly challenging due to the propensity of benzaldehyde to undergo overoxidation under typical aerobic conditions. Herein, we propose an innovative approach to address this issue by leveraging electrocatalytic processes, facilitated by ion-pair mediators [Ph3C]+[B(C6F5)4]-. By harnessing the power of electrochemistry, we successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of our strategy, which enables the selective oxidation of benzylic C-H bonds in benzylic molecules and toluene derivatives. Notably, our approach exhibited high efficiency, excellent selectivity, and compatibility with various functional groups, underscoring the broad applicability of our methodology.

Abstract:A highly efficient and green aerobic oxidation has been developed for selectively preparing a series of valuable 2,6-dialkyl-, dialkoxyl-, and alkoxylalkyl-substituted 4-hydroxybenzaldehydes from corresponding 4-cresols in good to excellent yields, using a catalytic system of Co(OAc)(2)center dot 4H(2)O (1.0mol%)-NaOH (1.0 equiv)-O-2 (1.0atm) in aqueous ethylene glycol (EG/H2O=20/1, v/v) at 50 degrees C. Furthermore, a plausible mechanism was proposed for the direct oxyfunctionalization of the aromatic methyl group into the aldehyde group.

Abstract:Synthesizing benzyl skeleton derivatives via direct oxidation of functionalized benzylic C-H bonds has received extensive research attention. Herein, a method was developed to prepare carbonyl compounds via photoinduced aerobic oxidation of ubiquitous benzylic C-H bonds mediated by bromine radicals and tribromomethane radicals. This method employed commercially available CBr4 as a hydrogen atom transfer reagent precursor, air as an oxidant, water as a reaction solvent, and tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (TBAPC) as an additive under mild conditions. A series of substrates bearing different functional groups was converted to aromatic carbonyls in moderate to good yields. Moreover, a low environmental factor (E-factor value=0.45) showed that the proposed method is ecofriendly and environmentally sustainable. Photocatalytic strategy for synthesizing aromatic ketones. The reaction is performed in H2O using CBr4 as a mediator and using air as an oxidant under 400 nm irradiation. Abstract:A heterogeneous copper(I)-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of primary benzylic and allylic alcohols to aldehydes was achieved under air in EtOH at 50 degrees C in the presence of 5 mol % of MCM-41-immobilized bipyridine copper(I) complex [MCM-41-bpy-CuI] and 5 mol % of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl (TEMPO) using aqueous ammonia as base, yielding a variety of aromatic and alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes in good to excellent yields. This heterogeneous copper catalyst can be easily recovered by a simple filtration of reaction solution and reused for at least 10 consecutive trials without any decreases in activity. The use of recyclable heterogeneous copper catalyst and green reagents, such as air as oxidant and ethanol as solvent, made the system attractive for environmentally sustainable processes. Abstract:Oxidation is a major chemical process to produce oxygenated chemicals in both nature and chemical industry. Currently, industrial deep oxidation processes from polyalkyl benzene are major routes to produce benzoic acids and benzene polycarboxylic acids (BPCAs), while to some extent suffering from the energy-intensive and potentially hazardous drawbacks and the sluggish separation issues. In this report, visible-light-induced deep aerobic oxidation of (poly)alkyl benzene to benzene (poly)carboxylic acids was developed. CeCl3 was proved to be an efficient HAT (Hydrogen Atom Transfer)catalyst in the presence of alcohol as both hydrogen and electron shuttle. Dioxygen (O2) was found as a sole terminal oxidant. In most cases, pure products were easily isolated by simple filtration, showing the advantages of for scaling up. The reaction provides an ideal way to form valuable fine chemicals from abundant petroleum feedstocks.

Abstract:The aerobic oxidation of alkylaromatics to aromatic ketones catalyzed by metalloporphyrins under the special temperature control method was systematically investigated. Three novel and key points were found to have significant functions in this process, that is, the special temperature control method (initiation at higher temperature and reaction at lower temperature), the synergistic effect of the composite catalysts comprising cobalt and manganese porphyrins, and the amount of catalysts in the reaction. Subsequently, the effects of substitutes on alkylaromatics were also explored under the same conditions. Results showed that alkylaromatic conversions gradually increased from 8.5% to 54.3% with the para-substituents shifting from the electron-donating group to the electron-withdrawing group (i.e., methoxy < hydro < bromo < acyl < nitro). A possible mechanism for this reaction was also proposed.
Highly Anti-Markovnikov Selective Oxidative Arene Alkenylation Using Ir(I) Catalyst Precursors and Cu(II) Carboxylates

Abstract:The Ir(I) complex [Ir(μ-Cl)(coe)2]2 (coe = cis-cyclooctene) is a catalyst precursor for benzene alkenylation using Cu(II) carboxylate salts. Using [Ir(μ-Cl)(coe)2]2, propenylbenzenes are formed from the reaction of benzene, propylene, and CuX2 (X = acetate, pivalate, or 2-ethylhexanoate). The Ir-catalyzed reactions selectively produce anti-Markovnikov products, trans-β-methylstyrene, cis-β-methylstyrene, and allylbenzene, along with minor amounts of the Markovnikov product, α-methylstyrene. The selectivity for the anti-Markovnikov products changed as the reaction progressed. For example, in a reaction that uses 240 equiv of Cu(OHex)2 (related to Ir), the selectivity for the anti-Markovnikov products increases from 18:1 at 3 h to 42:1 at 42 h with 30 psig of propylene at 150 °C. Studies of product stability have revealed that the increase in the selectivity for anti-Markovnikov products is not the result of an isomerization process or the selective decomposition of specific products. Rather, the change in selectivity correlates with the ratio of Cu(II) to Cu(I) in the solution, which decreases as the reaction progresses. We propose that the identity of the active catalyst changes as Cu(I) is accumulated, resulting in the formation of an active catalyst that is more selective for anti-Markovnikov products. Using a 4:1 Cu(I)/Cu(II) ratio at the start of the reaction, a 65(3):1 anti-Markovnikov/Markovnikov ratio is observed.

Abstract:The mechanism for aerobic oxidation of methylaromatic compounds using Co(CH3COO)(2)-Mn(CH3COO)(2)-KBr was further studied. The experimental results suggested that the intermediates (aromatic alcohols) are unexpectedly inert to direct oxidation via Co-Mn-Br catalysts under moderate conditions. In addition, it is found that both aromatic and aliphatic alcohols can inhibit the oxidation of the substrates and other intermediates (aromatic esters, aromatic aldehydes). UV-vis spectra indicated that oxidation from Co(II) to Co(III) would be interrupted in the presence of a given amount of alcohol. A plausible mechanism was also proposed. The intermediates analyzed by LC-MS and control experiments showed that aromatic alcohols prefer to undergo. esterification rather than being directly oxidized as described in previous studies, and aromatic acetates are subsequently oxidized to corresponding aldehydes. According to the new mechanism, a strategy of highly selectively synthesizing aromatic alcohols and aldehydes from corresponding methylaromatic compounds was designed. The selectivities of aromatic alcohols and aldehydes could also be tuned by the added amount of CH3COOK. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A highly efficient method to oxidize methylarenes to their corresponding acids with a reusable Cr catalyst was developed. The reaction can be carried out in water with 1 atm oxygen and K2S2O8 as cooxidants, proceeds under green and mild conditions, and is suitable for the oxidation of both electron-deficient and electron-rich methylarenes, including heteroaryl methylarenes, even at the gram level. The excellent result, together with its simplicity of operation and the ability to continuously reuse the catalyst, makes this new methodology environmentally benign and cost-effective. The generality of this methodology gives it the potential for use on an industrial scale. Differing from the accepted oxidation mechanism of toluene, GC-MS studies and DFT calculations have revealed that the key benzyl alcohol intermediate is formed under the synergetic effect of the chromium and molybdenum in the Cr catalyst, which can be further oxidized to afford benzaldehyde and finally benzoic acid.
