Abstract:Solution self-assembly of amphiphilic "rod-coil" copolymers, especially linear block copolymers and graft copolymers (also referred to as polymer brushes), has attracted considerable interest, as replacing one of the blocks of a coil-coil copolymer with a rigid segment results in distinct self-assembly features compared with those of the coil-coil copolymer. The unique interplay between microphase separation of the rod and coil blocks with great geometric disparities can lead to the formation of unusual morphologies that are distinctly different from those known for coil-coil copolymers. This review presents the recent achievements in the controlled self-assembly of rod-coil linear block copolymers and graft copolymers in solution, focusing on copolymer systems containing conjugated polymers, liquid crystalline polymers, polypeptides, and polyisocyanates as the rod segments. The discussions concentrate on the principle of controlling over the morphology of rod-coil copolymer assemblies, as well as their distinctive optical and optoelectronic properties or biocompatibility and stimuli-responsiveness, which afford the assemblies great potential as functional materials particularly for optical, optoelectronic and biological applications. Self-assembly of Cyclic Rod-Coil Diblock Copolymers

Abstract:The phase behavior of cyclic rod-coil diblock copolymer melts is investigated by the dissipative particle dynamics simulation. In order to understand the effect of chain topological architecture better, we also study the linear rod-coil system. The comparison of the calculated phase diagrams between the two rod-coil copolymers reveals that the order-disorder transition point (χN)ODT for cyclic rod-coil diblock copolymers is always higher than that of equivalent linear rod-coil diblocks. In addition, the phase diagram for cyclic system is more “symmetrical,” due to the topological constraint. Moreover, there are significant differences in the self-assembled overall morphologies and the local molecular arrangements. For example, frod = 0.5, both lamellar structures are formed while rod packing is different greatly in cyclic and linear cases. The lamellae with rods arranged coplanarly into bilayers occurs in cyclic rod-coil diblocks, while the lamellar structure with rods arranged end by end into interdigitated bilayers appears in linear counterpart. In both the lamellar phases, the domain size ratio of cyclic to linear diblocks is ranged from 0.63 to 0.70. This is attributed to that the cyclic architecture with the additional junction increases the contacts between incompatible blocks and prevents the coil chains from expanding as much as the linear cases. As frod = 0.7, the hexagonally packed cylinder is observed for cyclic rod-coil diblocks, while liquid-crystalline smectic A lamellar phase is formed in linear system. As a result, the cyclization of a linear rod-coil block copolymer can induce remarkable differences in the self-assembly behavior and also diversify its physical properties and applications greatly.

Abstract:Recent advances in the synthesis of block copolymers have enabled the creation of smart and functional designer polymers possessing specific intermolecular interactions. The long-range nature of these interactions strongly affects the molecular packings and microstructures of such polymers, which are intimately related to their properties. In addition to various applications, their unique physicochemical properties, distinguished from conventional block copolymers, are attracting significant attention from polymer and materials scientists. In this review, we describe the current understanding of the structure-property relationship of block copolymers having long-range interactions and suggest possible directions of technological development. We particularly focus on how specific interactions, such as Coulombic, π-π stacking, hydrogen-bonding, and metal/ion-dipole interactions, affect the molecular arrangements of block copolymers on the nanometer and molecular scales. Such information could lead to block copolymers with more advanced functions for future nanotechnologies.

Abstract:The self-assembly of conjugated rod-coil block copolymers has recently become one of the hot topics in the research of supramolecular chemistry. This article reviews the program on the self-assembly of conjugated rod-coil block copolymers with different rod blocks, including polyfluorene, polydi(styryl)-anthracene, poly(para-phenylene), poly (para-phenyleneethynylene), poly (para-phenylenevinylene), poly (2, 5-benzophenone), polythiophene, poly (phenylquinoline), etc. The syntheses and photophysical properties of conjugated rod-coil block copolymers are introduced. The formation and regulation of well-defined one-, two-, or three-dimensional conjugated domains in nanoscale dimensions by the self-assembly of these copolymers in different solvents, temperature and concentration are reviewed emphatically. The potential applications of the self-assembly of conjugated rod-coil block copolymers in many fields, particularly in optoelectronic device, are summarized. Finally, the prospects for the self-assembly of conjugated rod-coil block copolymers are stated.

Abstract:The solution self-assembly of amphiphilic polymers provides a versatile approach to design novel nanostructured materials. Multiblock polymers, particularly those composed of liquid crystalline and coil blocks, are of significant interest due to the potential display of nematic ordering in liquid crystalline domains, offering intriguing optical and mechanical properties. In this study, dissipative particle dynamics is used to investigate the solution self-assembly of rod-coil-rod copolymers in a coil-selective solvent. Extensive molecular simulations were conducted to elucidate the impact of polymer composition, concentration and flexibility on the self-assembly behavior. A quantitative analysis was performed to investigate how polymer conformations varied with changes in composition, concentration, and rigidity. Simulation results show that, at small rod compositions, rod-coil-rod polymers self-assemble into micelles at low concentrations, transitioning to network formation as concentration increases. An increase in rod composition leads to the formation of larger aggregates, resulting in cylindrical micelles and membranes. The results reported here also offer insights into the role of flexibility in shaping the self-assembly behavior of rod-coil-rod triblocks in selective solvents, thus, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the factors governing the formation of diverse structures in the solution self-assembly of triblock copolymers.

Abstract:Supramolecular self-assembly of block copolymers in aqueous solution has received ever-increasing interest over the past few decades due to diverse biological and technological applications in drug delivery, imaging, sensing and catalysis. In addition to relative block lengths, molecular weights and solution conditions, chain architectures of block copolymers can also dramatically affect their self-assembling properties in selective solvents. This feature article mainly focuses on recent developments in the field of supramolecular self-assembly of amphiphilic and double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs) possessing nonlinear chain topologies, including miktoarm star polymers, dendritic-linear block copolymers, cyclic block copolymers and comb-shaped copolymer brushes.

Abstract:The self-assembling ability of block copolymers offers an attractive strategy for the organization of pi-conjugated polymers. This article reports the synthesis of a coil-rod-coil triblock copolymer consisting of oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene) as the rodlike segment and polystyrene as the coil-like segment. The chemical structure of the afforded triblock copolymer has been fully characterized by various spectroscopic techniques such as NMR, Raman, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, ultraviolet-visible, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The small-angle neutron scattering and photophysical measurements indicate that this triblock copolymer exhibits unique solvatochromatic behaviors through the interplay of aggregation-induced pi-pi stacking and planarization of the conjugated backbone. Supramolecular gel nanostructures have been produced via the controlled assembly of the polymer into H-aggregates. It has been demonstrated that the use of the solvent composition to influence chain conformations and thus to manipulate the packing of the conjugated polymer blocks is important for achieving control in the assembly of conducting polymers and associated optical characteristics. Abstract:The self-assembly of five narrowly distributed novel rod-coil diblock copolymers, poly(styrene-block-(2,5-bis[4-methoxy-phenyl]oxycarbonyl)styrene) (PS-b-PMPCS), in p-xylene, a selective solvent at room temperature, was studied. The rod-coil copolymers, which have the same PS length but different PMPCS length, were synthesized by 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO) mediated living free radical polymerization. The influence of the rod length on the self-assembly morphology was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). At a concentration of 2.0 mg/mL, those copolymers with relatively shorter PMPCS length (copolymers 1 and 2) form individual spherical micelles; those with relatively longer PMPCS length (copolymer 3 and 4) form "pearl chains" coexisting with individual spherical micelles; the ones with longest PMPCS length form "pearl chains" coexisting with occasionally formed nanofibers. The diameter of all the morphologies was controlled by the rod length. This gives us a way to govern the self-assembly morphology by altering the length of one block in the block copolymer.

Abstract:We extended self-consistent field theory to explore self-assembly behavior of linear multiblock copolymers consisting of alternative rod and coil blocks. Such rod-coil multiblock copolymers are found to be capable of self-assembling into hierarchical smectic microstructures. For the copolymers with long rod end block, lamellae-in-lamellar structures containing two smectic C phases at small and large length scales were observed. It was found that the hierarchical smectic structures exhibit not only double periodicities in overall structure but also double orientational orders of rod blocks. Additionally, these hierarchical smectic structures can be tailed by tuning the relative length of the coil blocks. For the copolymers with long coil end block, the multiblock copolymers can self-assemble into hierarchical lamellar structures with smectic phases only at the small length scale. The findings gained through the present study may offer valuable information for understanding the self-assembly behavior of complicated rod-coil copolymers and designing polymeric materials with advanced properties.

Abstract:The self-assembly structures and their transformation of blends of rod-coil-rod triblock copolymers and homopolymers were first detected. Adding coil homopolymers into block copolymers with a lamellar structure resulted in ail increase of d-spacing. When coil homopolymers were added into triblock copolymer with a rod continuous hexagonally packed-cylinder structure, lamellar structures were obtained, and the lamellar d-spacing were smaller than that of the original Structure. The addition of rod-like homopolymer into the block copolymers with a lamellar structure also resulted in the increase of the d-spacing. As a result of the interdigitation, the rod blocks must rearrange to a larger angle with respect to the interface.

Abstract:Alternating copolymers (ACPs) have shown several attractive unique characteristics in solution self-assembly due to their special alternating structure. With the introduction of rod segments, much more complexity and multifunctionality can be achieved in the self-assembly of rod-alt-coil ACPs. Herein, we have performed a simulation study on the self-assembly of rod-alt-coil ACPs in dilute solution through dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. A morphological phase diagram was constructed as a function of rod and coil length, in which diverse assemblies were found, such as bicontinuous micelles and perforated membranes. Furthermore, the alignment of rod segments in the assemblies has been disclosed in detail. And, we deeply investigated the effects of rod length, coil length and pi-pi interaction strength on the self-assembly morphologies and rod alignment. With the increase of rod length, a disorder-order transition was observed, and pi-pi interactions could facilitate the orderly alignment of rods. Besides, our simulation results showed good agreement with available experiments. Furthermore, the unique characteristics in the self-assembly of rod-alt-coil alternating copolymers were discussed; in particular we found that the alternating molecular structures of ACPs could promote the orderly alignment of rod segments. We believe that the current work can provide a solid theoretical foundation for further experimental studies.

Abstract:Past decades have witnessed rapidly growing interest in nanometer-sized structures, which have great potential to be used in a variety of applications, such as electronics, sensors, coatings, and biomaterials. Supramolecular chemistry in particular has been actively applied to the development of such materials. Nanostructures can readily be accessed using bottom-up supramolecular approaches as they are composed of small molecules (supramolecular building blocks) requiring fewer steps to synthesize. Among various types of supramolecular building blocks, rod–coil molecules, due to their anisotropic molecular shape, are well-suited for tailoring nanostructural properties such as size and shape. This Feature Article highlights the self-assembly of rod–coil molecules in aqueous solution and introduces an emerging approach to the application of rod–coil nanostructures in biomaterials applications.

Abstract:We investigate the self-assembly of hard rod-shaped particles with an affinity for A block in diblock AB copolymer templates. The results are consistent with a series of recent experimental findings. Furthermore, we construct the phase diagrams of the mixture with different aspect ratios of particles by changing the particle concentration phip and the volume fraction f of the A block. The variation of the aspect ratio in different particle concentrations will significantly influence the effective volume of the A component and consequent phase behavior of nanoparticle/copolymer hybrid systems, which may account for the emergence of some unexpected phenomena of morphological transitions. The present study provides insightful guidance to control the nanometer-length-scale structures of shaped particles for potential applications as functional devices.

Abstract:Self-assembled behavior of rod-terminally tethered three-armed star-shaped coil block copolymer melts was studied by applying self-consistent-field lattice techniques in three-dimensional (3D) space. Similar to rod-coil diblock copolymers, five morphologies were observed, i.e., lamellar, perforated lamellar, gyroidlike, cylindrical and sphericallike structures, while the distribution of the morphologies in the phase diagram was dramatically changed with respect to that Of rod-coil diblock copolymers. The perforated lamella was replaced by the cylinder when f(rod) = 0.45, and the lamella was replaced by the perforated lamella when f(rod) = 0.5 when the arms A(1) and A(2) had an equal length and the volume fraction of A(3) arm was low enough. Simulations were also performed when the arms A(1) and A(2) had unequal lengths. These results demonstrate that simple branching in the coil induces interesting microphase transitions. Abstract:New methods to direct the self-assembly of particles are highly sought after for multiple applications, including photonics, electronics, and drug delivery. Most techniques, however, are limited to chemical patterning on spherical particles, limiting the range of possible structures. We developed a lithographic technique for fabrication of chemically anisotropic rod-like particles in which we can specify both the size and shape of particles and implement multiple diverse materials to control interfacial interactions. Multiphase rod-like particles, including amphiphilic diblock, triblock, and multiblock were fabricated in the same template mold having a tunable hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio. Self-assembly of diblock or triblock rods at a water/oil interface led to the formation of bilayer or ribbon-like structures.
