Abstract:Continuous study on preparation of multimetallic clusters is stimulated by their rich coordination chemistry and promising applications in a variety of interesting fields. Although numerous efforts have been devoted to this field, the rational design of homo- and hetero-multimetallic compounds with direct metal-metal bonding supported by 1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecarborane-1,2-dichalcogenolates will still be an important step forward. This tutorial review focuses on the synthetic approach via redox reactions between the pseudo-aromatic half-sandwich oraganometallic carborane precursors and low-valent transition metal reagents. The tailoring of reaction conditions and the structural information from the resulting products are discussed extensively.

Abstract:The addition reactions of the 16e half-sandwich complexes [M(eta5-Cp*)[E2C2(B10H10)]] (Cp*=pentamethylcyclopentadienyl: 1S: E=S, M=Rh; 2S: E=S; M=Ir; 2Se: E=Se, M=Ir) and [M(eta6-p-cymene)[S2C2(B10H10)]] (p-cymene=4-isopropyltoluene; 3S: M=Ru; 4S: M=Os), with acetylene, propyne, and 3-methoxypropyne lead to the 18e complexes 5-19 with a metal-boron bond in each case. The reactions start with an insertion of the alkyne into one of the metal-chalcogen bonds, followed by B-H activation, transfer of one hydrogen atom from the carborane via the metal to the terminal carbon of the alkyne, and concomitant ortho-metalation of the carborane. The E-eta2-CC and the C(1)B units are arranged either cisoid or transoid at the metal. X-ray structural analyses are reported for one of the starting 16e complexes (4S), the cisoid complex 12S (from 2S and HC[triple bond]C-CH3), and the transoid complexes 9S and 14S (from 1S and HC[triple bond]C-CH2OMe, and from 3S and HC[triple bond]CH, respectively). All new complexes 5-19 were characterized by NMR spectroscopy (1H, 11B, 13C, and 77Se and 103Rh NMR spectroscopy when appropriate).

Abstract:The addition reactions of the 16e halfsandwich complexes Cp*M[S2C2(B10H10)] (1S M=Rh, 2S M=Ir) and η6-(4-isopropyltoluene)M[S2C2(B10H10)] (3S M=Ru and 4S M=Os) with phenylacetylene lead selectively to the 18e complexes 5S–8S, in which a metalboron bond is present and the phenylacetylene is regio- and stereoselectively inserted into one of the MS bonds, with one hydrogen atom transferred from the carborane cage to the terminal carbon of the alkyne, corresponding to ortho-metalation of the carborane cage. In all cases, the S-η2-(Ph)CC and the C(1)B units are linked to the metal in cisoid positions. The analogous reaction of Cp*Ir[Se2C2(B10H10)] 2Se with phenylacetylene gives 6Se. Complex 5S undergoes an intramolecular rearrangement in solution to the isomer 9S, where the RhB bond is cleaved, the B-atom now bearing the organic substituent, and a metalcarbon σ bond being formed together with a coordinative S→Rh bond. In contrast, the p-cymene complexes 7S and 8S rearrange into isomers 10S and 11S, in which the S-η2-(Ph)CC and the C(1)B(M) moieties occupy transoid positions, preventing further intramolecular rearrangements. The proposed structures in solution were deduced from NMR data (1H-, 11B-, 13C-, 77Se-, and 103Rh-NMR) and X-ray structural analyses were carried out for 5S, 6Se, 9S and 10S.

Abstract:A 3-connected dia-f-type metal-organic framework compound {[Ag(L)(3/2)H2PO4]}(n) (1) has been synthesized by self-assembly of 4.4'-H(2)bpz (L = 4,4'-H(2)bpz = 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-bipyrazole) and Ag4P2O7 under hydrothermal conditions. It crystallizes in the tetragonal space group I4(1)/acd with a = 21.406(4) angstrom, b = 21.406(4) angstrom, c = 36.298(8) angstrom, Z = 32. X-ray single-crystal diffraction reveals that 1 has a three-dimensional framework with an unprecedented alternate left- and right-handed helices structure, featuring a non-uniform two-fold interpenetrated (4.14(2)) net. Photoluminescent investigation reveals that the title compound displays interesting emissions in a wide region, which shows that the title compound may be a good potential candidate as a photoelectric material. Abstract:The 16-electron Co, Rh and Ir half-sandwich complexes of Cp#M[E2C2(B10H10)] and Cp#M(E2S2C6H4) (M=Co, Rh, Ir, Ru; E=S, Se) containing chelating 1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane-1,2-dichalcogenolato ligands and benzenedithiolato ligands are promising precursors to build multimetallic clusters by reactions with low oxidation state late transition metal reagents. Such reactions lead to successful constructions of M–M bonds between iridium, rhodium, cobalt, ruthenium, and other late transition metals. Most of these complexes have been characterized by X-ray single crystal determinations and some have been studied by computational methods. Such theoretical studies reveal the covalent bonding nature of those multinuclear complexes. Some of these clusters have been found to have interesting nonlinear optical properties.

Abstract:The assembly of soluble, air- stable, binuclear structures, namely {( p- cymene) Ru[S2C2( B10H10)]}(2)(mu-pyz) ( 4), {Cp*Co[S2C2( B10H10)]} (2)(mu- pyz) ( 5), {Cp*Co[S2C2( B10H10)]}(2)(mu- bpy) ( 6), {Cp*Co[S2C2(B10H10)]}(2) (mu- bpe) ( 7) and {Cp* Ir[E2C2( B10H10)]}(2)(mu- bpo) (E = S ( 8a), Se ( 8b)), in which organometallic units are bridged by pyridyl- based organic linkers, are synthesized. The complexes have been fully characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy, as well as elemental analysis. The molecular structures of 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are established through X- ray crystallography.

Abstract:The reaction of the 16e half-sandwich complex {CpCo[S2C2B10H10]} (1S) with methyl acetylene monocarboxylate at ambient temperature led to {CpCo[S2C2B10H10] [CHC(CO2Me)CHC(CO2Me)]} (2S) and {CpCo[S2C2B10H8][CHCH(CO2Me)](2)} (3S). In2S the alkyne is 2-fold inserted into one of the Co-S bonds. 3S is a 16e B-disubstituted complex with the olefinic units in a Z/Z configuration. In comparison, {CpCo[Se2C2B10H10]} (1Se) reacted with the alkyne to give rise to {CpCo[Se2C2B10H10][CHC(CO2Me)CHC(CO2Me)]} (2Se), {CpCo[Se2C2B10H9][CH2C(CO2Me)]} (4Se), and {CpCo[Se2C2B10H8][CH2C(CO2Me)][CHCH(CO2Me)]} (5Se). 2Se is the analogue of 2S. Upon heating, 2S and 2Se catalyze cyclotrimerization of the alkyne to generate 1,3,5- and 1,2,4-tricarboxylatebenzenes. 4Se is an 18e B-substituted species with a B-CH2 unit. 5Se is analogous to 4Se, but contains an olefinic substituent at the B(3)/B(6) site of the carborane in a Z configuration. Mechanistic implications on metal-induced B-H bond activation and catalytic cyclotrimerization of alkyne were elucidated. All new complexes were characterized by NMR spectroscopy (H-1, B-11, C-13), and X-ray structural analyses were reported for 2S, 2Se, 3S, 4Se, and 5Se.

Abstract:A binuclear iridium complex, (Cp-2*Ir-2(CH2O)C2B10H8) (6), with a unique metal-metal bond has been synthesized and fully characterized. Importantly, this complex is constructed via selective C-H and B(3)-H bond activation on the carborane precursor. Additionally, when the proligand (2-pyridine)(o-carboranyl)methanol ligand was combined with a half-sandwich iridium complex, selective B(6)-H bond activation or metal-carbon bond formation can be induced by the use of different bases. And the rhodium complex constructed from (2-pyridine)(o-carboranyl)methanol ligand containing a metal-carbon bond has been obtained and fully characterized.

Abstract:The three-component reactions of the 16-electron half sandwich complex CpCo(S2C2B10H10) (Cp = cyclopentadienyl) (1) with ethyl diazoacetae (EDA) and alkynes R-1 R-2 (R-1 = Ph, R-2 = H; R-1 = CO2Me, R-2 = H; R-1 = R-2 = CO2Me; R-1 = Fc, R-2 = H) at ambient temperature lead to compounds CpCo(S2C2B10H9) (CH2CO2Et) (CHCO2Et) (R-1=R-2) (2-5), CpCo(S2C2B10H9)(CH2CO2Et)(R-1=R-2) (2-5), CpCo(S2C2B10H9)(CH2CO2Et)(R-2-R-1-CHCO2Et) (6-9), CpCo(S2C2B10H9)(CH2CO2Et)(CH(Ph)C=CHCO2Et) (10), and CpCo(S2C2B10H9)(CH2CO2Et)(CH(Fc)-CH-CCO2Et) (11). In 2-5, one alkyne is stereoselectively inserted into the Co-B bond, one EDA molecule is used to form a sulfide ylide, and the second EDA molecule is inserted into one Co-S bond to form a three-membered metallacyclic ring. At ambient temperature 2-5 undergo rearrangement to 6-9 through migratory insertion of the inserted EDA. Different from 2-5, in 10 phenylacetylene is inserted into the Co-B bond at the terminal carbon and the terminal carbon is coupled with one EDA to afford a six-membered metallacyclic ring with the C=O coordination to metal. In 11, a stable Co-B bond is generated, and one EDA and one ethnylferrocene are inserted into the Co-S bond. Moreover, if weakly basic silica is present, 2-4 can lose an apex BH close to the two carbon atoms of o-carborane to give rise to CpCo(S2C2B9H9)(CH2CO2Et)(2)(R-1=R-2) (12-14) accompanied by the coordination of the tow sulfide ylide units to the metal center. The solid-state structures of 2-4, 6-12, and 14 were characterized by X-ray structural analysis.
Understanding the chemical bonding in sandwich complexes of transition metals coordinated to nine-membered rings: energy decomposition analysis and the donor–acceptor charge transfers

Abstract:DFT calculations on sandwich complexes of the type (C9H9)2M and (C6N3H6)2M (M = Sc–Ni) are carried out in gas phase and tetrahydrofurane solvent (THF) using BP86 and B3LYP functionals. The nine-membered (C9H9)− and (C6N3H6)− ligand anions behave differently regarding their coordination to the M2+ metal cation. The computed structural and energetic parameters are weakly influenced by the inclusion of THF solvent. We report that the metal–ligand separation are sensitive to the electron-donation and electron π-backdonation as highlighted by the populations of the occupied and empty orbitals of the [(C9H9)−]2 and [(C6N3H6)−]2 anions and the electronic configuration of the M2+ cation. The results showed that the [(C9H9)−]2 and [(C6N3H6)−]2 ligands behave differently in terms of bonding, coordination mode and donation and π-backdonation properties in relationship with the metal cation radius, the number of the atoms involved in the coordination and their nature (either carbon or nitrogen atoms). The interactions are dominated by electrostatic and orbital terms each contributing approximately half into the total attractive energy. The donor–acceptor between NBOs identified within the NEDA scheme show the importance of σ → LP charge transfers contrary to those related to LP → σ* ones in line with their occupations and second perturbative energy E2.

Abstract:Broadening carborane applications has consistently been the goal of chemists in this field. Herein, compared to alkyl or aryl groups, a carborane cage demonstrates an advantage in stabilizing a unique bonding interaction: M & ctdot;C-H interaction. Experimental results and theoretical calculations have revealed the characteristic of this two-center, two-electron bonding interaction, in which the carbon atom in the arene ring provides two electrons to the metal center. The reduced aromaticity of the benzene moiety, long distance between the metal and carbon atom in arene, and the upfield shift of the signal of M & ctdot;C-H in the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum distinguished this interaction from metal & ctdot;C pi interaction and metal-C(H) sigma bonds. Control experiments demonstrate the unique electronic effects of carborane in stabilizing the M & ctdot;C-H bonding interaction in organometallic chemistry. Furthermore, the M & ctdot;C-H interaction can convert into C-H bond metallization under acidic conditions or via treatment with t-butyl isocyanide. These findings deepen our understanding regarding the interactions between metal centers and carbon atoms and provide new opportunities for the use of carboranes. Abstract:The study on transition metal mediated self-assemblies has drawn considerable attention during the past decade. This article focused on the significant progress made in the area of multinuclear supramolecular construction through pseudo-aromatic carboranyl species Cp*M[S(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10))] (M = Co, Rh, Ir) and pyridine-based ligands over the past few years. Structurally pre-defined complexes, from mono-molecules to three-dimensional frameworks, can be obtained in high yields under mild reaction conditions through self-assembly, and the structural features of solid state confirmed by X-ray crystallography are also discussed.

Abstract:Treatment of 16 e complex ( p -cymene)Ru(S 2 C 2 B 10 H 10 ) ( 1 ) with PhCH(OH)C≡CH in CH 2 Cl 2 at room temperature leads to two novel complexes ( p -cymene)Ru(S 2 C 2 B 10 H 9 )(PhCH=CCH 2 OCH(Ph)C≡CH) ( 2 ) and ( p -cymene)Ru(S 2 C 2 B 10 H 9 )(PhCH(OH)C=CH 2 ) ( 3 ). Both complexes have been characterized through elemental analysis, mass, IR and NMR spectroscopies. Notably, complex 2 has been studied by X-ray diffraction. It has been determined that complex 2 crystallizes in triclinic system, space group P with: a = 11.1020(10) Å, b = 11.8445(10) Å, c = 13.8071(12) Å, α = 78.3630(10)°, β = 75.7330(10)°, γ = 68.7580(10)°, C 30 H 38 B 10 ORuS 2 , M r = 687.89, V = 1627.3(2) Å 3 , ρ = 1.404 g/cm 3 , Z = 2, F (000) = 704, μ(Mo K α ) = 0.636 mm –1 , R = 0.0388 and ω R = 0.1100 for 5658 observed reflections ( I > 2σ( I )). The formation mechanisms for the title complexes have been studied.

On the Nature of the Bonding in Metal-Silane sigma-Complexes

Abstract:The nature of metal silane sigma-bond interaction has been investigated in several key systems by a range of experimental and computational techniques. The structure of [Cp'Mn(CO)2(eta2-HSiHPh2)] 1 has been determined by single crystal neutron diffraction, and the geometry at the Si atom is shown to approximate to a trigonal bipyramid. This complex is similar to [Cp'Mn(CO)2(eta2-HSiFPh2)] 2, whose structure and bonding characteristics have recently been determined by charge density studies based on high-resolution X-ray and neutron diffraction data. The geometry at the Si atom in these sigma-bond complexes is compared with that in other systems containing hypercoordinate silicon. The Mn-H distances for 1 and 2 in solution have been estimated using NMR T1 relaxation measurements, giving a value of 1.56(3) AA in each case, in excellent agreement with the distances deduced from neutron diffraction. DFT calculations have been employed to explore the bonding in the Mn-H-Si unit in 1 and 2 and in the related system [Cp'Mn(CO)2(eta2-HSiCl3)] 3. These studies support the idea that the oxidative addition of a silane ligand to a transition metal center may be described as an asymmetric process in which the Mn-H bond is formed at an early stage, while both the establishment of the Mn-Si bond and also the activation of the eta2-coordinated Si-H moiety are controlled by the extent of Mn-> sigma*(X-Si-H) back-donation, which increases with increasing electronwithdrawing character of the X substituent trans to the metal-coordinated Si-H bond. This delocalized molecular orbital (MO) approach is complemented and supported by combined experimental and theoretical charge density studies including the source function S(r,Omega).

Abstract:Two prototypes of hetero-trinuclear complexes containing metal−metal bondings {Cp‘Rh[μ-E2C2(B10H10)]}2Mo(μ-CO)2 (Cp‘ = η5-1,3-tBu2C5H3, E = S(2a), Se(2b)), {Cp‘Rh[μ-E2C2(B10H10)]}2Ni (E = S (4a), Se (4b)) were obtained from the reactions of 16-electron complexes Cp‘Rh[E2C2(B10H10)] (E = S (1a), Se (1b)) with low-valence transition metal complexes, such as [Mo(CO)3(NC5H5)3] and Ni(COD)2, respectively. Abstract:Solvothermal reactions of 4,4'-dicarboxydiphenylamine (H2L) with 4,4'-bis(imidazol-1-yl)phenyl (BIP) and 4,4'-bis(imidazol-1-yl)diphenyl (BIBP) in the presence of cobalt(II), cadmium(II), zinc(II) salts in H2O/CH3CN or H2O/DMF produced five new complexes, namely, [Co-2(L)(2)(BIP)(2)center dot 3H(2)O](n), (1), [Co(L)(BIP)center dot 2CH(3)CN](n) (2), [Co(L)(BIBP)center dot H2O] (3), [Cd(L)(BIBP)] (4), [Zn(L)-(BIBP)] (5). Compound 1 has binuclear Co(II) clusters, which are linked by L2- and BIP to generate a rare three-dimensional (3D) non-interpenetrated cds-type framework, and displays ferromagnetic character. Compound 2 possesses unusual 3-fold 2D -> 2D polycatenation of (4, 4) nets. Compound 3 reveals a (4, 4) grid topology with very strong hydrogen bondings due to the abundant uncoordinated carboxyl groups, which load in the structure like a freely dangling arm. Compound 3 also displays weak ferromagnetic character. Compounds 4 and 5 are isomorphic. H2L and BIBP ligands in 4 and 5 interact with a metal center to form wave-like 2D sheets. In addition, the thermal stabilities and photochemical properties of compounds have been studied.

Abstract:The synthesis of half-sandwich binuclear transition-metal complexes containing the Cab(C,C) chelate ligands (Cab(C,C) = C2B10H10 (1)) is described. 1Li(2) was reacted with chloride-bridged dimers [ Cp*RhCl-(mu- Cl)](2) (Cp* = eta(5)-C-5(CH3)(5)), [Cp'RhCl(mu-Cl)](2) (Cp' = eta(5)-1,3-tBu(2)C(5)H(3)), [Cp*IrCl(mu-Cl)](2) and [(p-cymene)-RuCl( mu-Cl)](2) to give half-sandwich binuclear complexes [ Cp*Rh(mu-Cl)](2)(Cab(C,C)) ( 2), [Cp'Rh(mu-Cl)](2)(Cab(C,C)) [3),[ Cp*Ir(mu-Cl)](2)(Cab(C,C)) ( 4) and [(p-cymene) Ru(mu-Cl)](2)(Cab(C,C)) ( 5), respectively. Addition reactions of the ruthenium complex 5 with air gave [( p-cymene)(2)Ru-2(mu-OH)(mu-Cl)](Cab(C,C)) ( 6), rhodium complex 2 with LiSPh gave [Cp*Rh(mu-SPh)](2)(Cab(C,C)) ( 7). The complexes were characterized by IR, NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. In addition, X-ray structure analysis were performed on complexes 2-7 where the potential C,C-chelate ligand was found to coordinate in a bidentate mode as a bridge. (C) 2008 Elsevier B. V.
