Abstract:Hydrogen storage material has been much developed recently because of its potential for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell applications. A successful solid-state reversible storage material should meet the requirements of high storage capacity, suitable thermodynamic properties, and fast adsorption and desorption kinetics. Complex hydrides, including boron hydride and alanate, ammonia borane, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), are remarkable hydrogen storage materials because of their advantages of high energy density and safety. This feature article focuses mainly on the thermodynamics and kinetics of these hydrogen storage materials in the past few years.

Abstract:The growing use of conventional energy such as fossil fuels results in problems degrading our environment. Hydrogen is frequently discussed as a clean energy in the future without pollution. However, efficient and safe storage of hydrogen constitute a key challenge and unresolved problem. One of the main options is solid-state storage technology. A successful solid-state reversible storage material should meet the requirements of high storage capacity, suitable thermodynamic properties, reversibility and fast adsorption and desorption kinetics. This feature article focuses mainly on the development of thermodynamic improvement of hydrogen storage materials in the past few years including the complex hydride, ammonia borane, and metal-organic frameworks. A review of classical hydrogen isotopes storage materials

Abstract:Hydrogen storage alloys (HSAs) are attracting widespread interest in the nuclear industry because of the generation of stable metal hydrides after tritium absorption, thus effectively preventing the leakage of radioactive tritium. Commonly used HSAs in the hydrogen isotopes field are Zr2M (M = Co, Ni, Fe) alloys, metallic Pd, depleted U, and ZrCo alloy. Specifically, Zr2M (M = Co, Ni, Fe) alloys are considered promising tritium-getter materials, and metallic Pd is utilized to separate and purify hydrogen isotopes. Furthermore, depleted U and ZrCo alloy are well suited for storing and delivering hydrogen isotopes. Notably, all the aforementioned HSAs need to modulate their hydrogen storage properties for complex operating conditions. In this review, we present a comprehensive overview of the reported modification methods applied to the above alloys. Alloying is an effective amelioration method that mainly modulates the properties of HSAs by altering their local geometrical/electronic structures. Besides, microstructural modifications such as nano-sizing and nanopores have been used to increase the specific surface area and active sites of metallic Pd and ZrCo alloys for enhancing de-/hydrogenation kinetics. The combination of metallic Pd with support materials can significantly reduce the cost and enhance the pulverization resistance. Moreover, the poisoning resistance of ZrCo alloy is improved by constructing active surfaces with selective permeability. Overall, the review is constructive for better understanding the properties and mechanisms of hydrogen isotope storage alloys and provides effective guidance for future modification research.

Abstract:High capacity hydrogen storage is a key issue for future hydrogen energy. The hydrides, constituted of light elements such as Li, B, C, N, Na, Mg, Al, Si, etc., are excellent candidates for high gravimetric and volumetric density of hydrogen storage. However, these light-weight hydrides generally suffer from poor reversibility under moderate temperature and pressure conditions due to over high thermodynamic stability and/or sluggish kinetics. This review summarizes recent advances in the effort of overcoming thermodynamic and kinetic challenges for Mg based hydrides and complex hydrides. With respect to kinetic enhancement, great achievements have been achieved through several successful approaches such as nanoscaling, catalyzing, and compositing. In particular, a simple and massive fabrication method was developed to in-situ form multi-valence nano-catalyst in Mg based hydrides by conventional melting and hydrogenation treatment. Also, the reversibility of complex hydrides can be greatly improved through nanoscaling and doping catalysts. Comparatively, the thermodynamic destabilization effect is limited by applying the strategies of nanoscaling, ionic substituting for complex hydrides, alloying for Mg based hydrides, and altering the reaction route. For the approach of nanoscaling, both theoretical calculation and experimental results prove that thermodynamic destabilization can only be achieved by reducing the size of hydrides down to several nanometers, which is extremely difficult to realize and maintain, and thus, nano-confinement has been adopted. On the other hand, although the reversibility of most of Mg based alloys is generally poor, fully reversible hydriding has been achieved in some Mg based solid solution alloys with reduced reaction enthalpy. On the whole, based on the current status of the research progress, the existing Mg based and complex hydrides could not fully satisfy the application requirements of hydrogen energy storage, and the sustainable research effort are still making to solve their intrinsic thermodynamic and kinetic challenges.

This chapter discusses the general thermal dynamic and kinetic properties of metal hydrides during the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation processes, and presents some typical metal hydride materials and their pros and cons in hydrogen storage application. In particular, the use of nanostructures to improve the thermal dynamics and cycling kinetics of metal hydrides has been elaborated in detail. The use of hydrocarbons as hydrogen storage is also presented, and the practical challenges for this chemical storage method are discussed.

Abstract:Mg-based hydrides are one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials because of their relatively high storage capacity, abundance, and low cost. However, slow kinetics and stable thermodynamics hinder their practical application. In contrast to the substantial progress in the enhancement of the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation kinetics, thermodynamic tuning is still a great challenge for Mg-based alloys. At present, the main strategies to alter the thermodynamics of Mg/MgH2 are alloying, nanostructuring, and changing the reaction pathway. Using these approaches, thermodynamic tuning has been achieved to some extent, but it is still far from that required for practical application. In this article, we summarize the advantages and disadvantages of these strategies. Based on the current progress, finding reversible systems with high hydrogen capacity and effectively tailored reaction enthalpy offers a promising route for tuning the thermodynamics of Mg-based hydrogen storage alloys.

Abstract:Hydrogen storage technology is the major pillar for the fast growing hydrogen based energy infrastructure apart from production and delivery. Numerous attempts have been made by researchers for rational design of safe hydrogen storage technology. Solid-state hydrogen storage in the form of metal hydrides is largely adopted for their high hydrogen storage capacity and excellent reaction kinetics. Although the interaction of hydrogen with metals is a very mature area, the field has taken momentum in recent years. Novel material design, hi-tech routes for synthesis of new generations of materials have been adopted for enhancing the gravimetric capacity and kinetics of reaction. Hence, in the present review, the most studied metal hydride systems are discussed and the different approaches adopted to improve their performances are reviewed. The architectural designs in synthesis methods such as addition of dopants, use of modern synthesis tools etc. are explored for each alloy system. Recent developments in the metal hydrides of each type of alloys are highlighted in every section along with their performances. Finally, in the benefit of the researcher several new research directions on design of novel materials and improvement of the storage capacity of different alloys have been proposed.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy is a very attractive option in dealing with the existing energy crisis. For the development of a hydrogen energy economy, hydrogen storage technology must be improved to over the storage limitations. Compared with traditional hydrogen storage technology, the prospect of hydrogen storage materials is broader. Among all types of hydrogen storage materials, solid hydrogen storage materials are most promising and have the most safety security. Solid hydrogen storage materials include high surface area physical adsorption materials and interstitial and non-interstitial hydrides. Among them, interstitial hydrides, also called intermetallic hydrides, are hydrides formed by transition metals or their alloys. The main alloy types are A2B, AB, AB2, AB3, A2B7, AB5, and BCC. A is a hydride that easily forms metal (such as Ti, V, Zr, and Y), while B is a non-hydride forming metal (such as Cr, Mn, and Fe). The development of intermetallic compounds as hydrogen storage materials is very attractive because their volumetric capacity is much higher (80–160 kgH2m−3) than the gaseous storage method and the liquid storage method in a cryogenic tank (40 and 71 kgH2m−3). Additionally, for hydrogen absorption and desorption reactions, the environmental requirements are lower than that of physical adsorption materials (ultra-low temperature) and the simplicity of the procedure is higher than that of non-interstitial hydrogen storage materials (multiple steps and a complex catalyst). In addition, there are abundant raw materials and diverse ingredients. For the synthesis and optimization of intermetallic compounds, in addition to traditional melting methods, mechanical alloying is a very important synthesis method, which has a unique synthesis mechanism and advantages. This review focuses on the application of mechanical alloying methods in the field of solid hydrogen storage materials.

Developing Ideal Metalorganic Hydrides for Hydrogen Storage: From Theoretical Prediction to Rational Fabrication

Abstract:Materials for hydrogen storage have been extensively explored for a few decades. Thousands of materials have been synthesized and tested; however, few systems could meet the practical requirements. Metalorganic hydrides discovered recently offer new opportunities. It is, however, extremely time-consuming and inefficient to experimentally screen potential materials from a large variety of metal cations and organic anions. In the present study, we performed wide-ranging theoretical predictions and screened more than 90 metalorganic hydrides; 20 of them were identified with both high hydrogen capacities (≥5 wt %) and suitable thermodynamics (heat of H2 desorption: 25–35 kJ/mol-H2) that allow hydrogen uptake and release near ambient condition. We picked up four of them, i.e., Li/Na indolides and 7-azaindolides, for experimental validation. All the four candidates can be easily synthesized via the reactions between the metal hydrides and the corresponding organic precursors. Among them the structures of lithium indolide (P21/c (no. 14)) and sodium 7-azaindolide (P4̅21c (no. 114) were successfully resolved. Photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations confirmed that the charge density of the organic ring increased with the introduction of an alkali metal, thus optimizing their ΔHd for hydrogen storage. Importantly, we demonstrated experimentally that lithium indolide with a theoretical hydrogen capacity of 6.1 wt % has a heat of hydrogen absorption of ca. 33.7 kJ/mol-H2 which is in excellent agreement with the value (33.6 kJ/mol-H2) predicted theoretically. The partially reversible hydrogen release and uptake can be can be achieved at the temperature as low as 100 °C. Abstract:Mg-based materials are one of the most promising hydrogen storage candidates due to their high hydrogen storage capacity, environmental benignity, and high Clarke number characteristics. However, the limited thermodynamics and kinetic properties pose major challenges for their engineering applications. Herein, we review the recent progress in improving their thermodynamics and kinetics, with an emphasis on the models and the influence of various parameters in the calculated models. Subsequently, the impact of alloying, composite, and nano-crystallization on both thermodynamics and dynamics are discussed in detail. In particular, the correlation between various modification strategies and the hydrogen capacity, dehydrogenation enthalpy and temperature, hydriding/dehydriding rates are summarized. In addition, the mechanism of hydrogen storage processes of Mg-based materials is discussed from the aspect of classical kinetic theories and microscope hydrogen transferring behavior. This review concludes with an outlook on the remaining challenge issues and prospects.

Beyond Idealized Models of Nanoscale Metal Hydrides for Hydrogen Storage

Abstract:Metal hydrides are attractive for compact, low-pressure hydrogen storage, yet a foundational understanding of factors governing their thermodynamics and kinetics is still lacking. Predictive modeling from the atomic to the microstructural scale plays a critical role in addressing these gaps, particularly for nanoscale materials, which promise improved performance but are difficult to probe. Here, we summarize strategies being developed within the Hydrogen Materials—Advanced Research Consortium (HyMARC) for going beyond conventional models to incorporate more complex physics, more realistic structures, and better approximation of operation conditions in simulations of nanoscale metal hydrides. We highlight four beyond-ideal factors that influence predicted performance: (1) surface anharmonic dynamics, (2) interface and surface energy penalties, (3) mechanical stress under confinement, and (4) the presence of native surface oxide. Approaches for addressing these factors are demonstrated on model materials representative of high-capacity hydrogen storage systems, and implications for understanding performance under operating conditions are discussed.

Abstract:Hydrogen has been long known to provide a solution toward clean energy systems. With this notion, many efforts have been made to find new ways of storing hydrogen. As a result, decades of studies has led to a wide range of hydrides that can store hydrogen in a solid form. Applications of these solid-state hydrides are well-suited to stationary applications. However, the main challenge arises in making the selection of the Metal Hydrides (MH) that are best suited to meet application requirements. Herein, we discuss the current state-of-art in controlling the properties of room temperature (RT) hydrides suitable for stationary application and their long term behavior in addition to initial activation, their limitations and emerging trends to design better storage materials. The hydrogen storage properties and synthesis methods to alter the properties of these MH are discussed including the emerging approach of high-entropy alloys. In addition, the integration of intermetallic hydrides in vessels, their operation with fuel cells and their use as thermal storage is reviewed.

Abstract:The design of advanced pressure tanks for enabling the effective heat management of metal hydride systems is critical for the translation of the hydride technology across the hydrogen supply chain, from hydrogen storage to compression. This review summarizes the current state of the art and highlights the need for more creative designs beyond the conventional heat exchangers. Metal hydrides provide a safe and efficient way to store hydrogen. However, current metal hydride storage systems, i.e., hydrides incorporated within a storage tank, are far from efficient. Depending on the design, (dis)charging rates may be very long. However, this can be significantly improved by implementing strategies tackling the issue of heat management at the level of: i) the metal hydride bed, and ii) the overall storage system design. This review summarises recent progress in tackling heat management of hydride systems. In this respect, modeling has emerged as a powerful tool. In particular, simulation results show that the compaction of hydride powders with binders and the use of metal foams are both effective in lifting the poor thermal conductivity of hydride beds. For tank designs, cylindrical shapes remain the preferred choice because of the flexibility and ease of supplementing heat management with fins and tubular heat exchangers. The addition of phase change materials to the hydride tank can lead to further heat storage, but any add‐on to simple hydride tanks can only lead to cumbersome systems. It is still a fine art to tune the thermal conductivity of hydride beds while selecting a suitable metal hydride alloy composition.

Abstract:Hydrogen can play an important role in the development of a sustainable energy system. However, storing hydrogen in a safe, efficient and economical manner remains a huge challenge. Light metal hydrides have attracted considerable attention for hydrogen storage owing to their high gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen densities. However, the strong covalent and/or ionic bonds between metal atoms and hydrogen result in slow kinetics, poor reversibility, and temperatures too high for dehydrogenation, hence delaying their practical large–scale applications. Considerable efforts have been toward tailoring the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of light metal hydride–based hydrogen storage materials for performance improvement, with the fabrication of nanoscale particles being a key and effective strategy. This review covers the preparation methods and hydrogen storage performance of nanostructured light metal hydrides. The physical and chemical properties and hydrogen storage behaviors of reversible light metal hydrides are first summarized, including MgH2, borohydrides, aluminum hydrides, amide–hydride systems, and hydride composites. The second section focuses on the research progress in nanostructuring for enhancing the reversible hydrogen storage properties of these hydrides. Finally, the main challenges and the future research prospects are discussed. The combination of nanostructuring and nanocatalysis can significantly enhance the performance of these hydrides and make them practical hydrogen carriers.

Abstract:Lithium borohydride (LiBH4) has been attracting extensive attention as an exemplary high‐capacity complex hydride for solid‐state hydrogen storage applications because of its high hydrogen capacities (18.5 wt% and 121 kg H2 m−3). However, the strong and highly directional covalent and ionic bonds within LiBH4 structure induce high desorption temperatures, slow kinetics, and poor reversibility, which make large‐scale application impractical. To improve its hydrogen cycling performance, several strategies including cation/anion substitution, catalyst doping, reactive compositing, and nanoengineering, have been developed to tailor the thermodynamics and kinetics of hydrogen storage process. For example, largely reduced operation temperatures and remarkably improved hydrogen storage reversibility under moderate conditions have been achieved by the synergistic effect of nanostructuring and nanocatalysis. Herein, the state‐of‐the‐art development of LiBH4‐based hydrogen storage materials is summarized, including the basic physical and chemical properties, the principles of thermodynamic and kinetic manipulation and the strategies to improve hydrogen storage properties. The remaining challenges and the main directions of future research are also discussed.

Abstract:Complex hydrides have been extensively studied because of their higher gravimetric hydrogen density than that of conventional metal hydrides. It has been found that an improved hydrogen storage property is obtained by loading complex hydrides into porous materials which have attracted much attention owing to their high specific surface area, uniform and controllable pore diameter and good thermostability. This paper begins with a brief introduction to the structural characteristics and physical and chemical properties of porous materials, and then the advances in the study of complex hydrides incorporated into porous materials, including preparation methods, catalytic effect and mechanism on the dehydrogenation/rehydrogenation performance, are outlined. The key issues needed to be solved are discussed.

Abstract:Metal hydrides (MHs) are featured for their reversible hydrogen absorption and desorption properties, which are conventionally used as hydrogen storage materials. MHs can also be used for catalysis, particularly for chemical reactions that involve hydrogen. This Review summarizes the historical and recent progress in the catalytic application of MHs. The focus topic is how the reversible hydrogen absorption and desorption properties of MHs enable their catalytic effect in hydrogen involving chemical reactions. We start with the basic properties of MHs, and their applications in hydrogen storage and related fields. The application of MHs in four important catalytic reactions: olefin hydrogenation, reversible hydrogen storage in liquid organic hydrogen carriers, CO2 hydrogenation, and NH3 synthesis are discussed. Finally, we compare MH-based catalysts with their analogues, including hydrogen spillover, oxyhydrides, mixed-anion hydrides, and electrides in catalysis. The Review demonstrates the inherent relationship between MH catalysis and their intrinsic hydrogen absorption and desorption properties, providing insights into diverse applications of MHs beyond hydrogen storage.

However, the high operation temperature and slow reaction rate of MgH2, as a result of the large formation enthalpy and high reaction activation energy, respectively, are the first and most difficult problems we need to face and overcome to realize its industrialization. Herein, a state-of-the-art review on tailoring the stable thermodynamics and sluggish kinetics of hydrogen storage in MgH2, particularly through nanoengnieering and catalysis is presented, aiming to provide references and solutions for its promotion and application. Promising methods to overcome the challenges faced by MgH2/Mg, such as bidirectional catalysts and nanoconfinement with in-situ catalysis are compared and the required improvements are discussed to stimulate further discussions and ideas in the rational design of MgH2/Mg systems with ability for hydrogen release/uptake at lower temperatures and cycle stability in the near future.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy has been identified as a renewable and carbon-neutral energy carrier for the exponentially increasing energy demand and as a substitute for fossil fuels. Hydrogen storage is crucial for harnessing hydrogen energy to its fullest potential and comprehending the hydrogen economy. Hydrogen can be stored in solid, gaseous, or liquid states. Although high-pressure compression and liquefaction are well-established hydrogen storage techniques, safety concerns, energy consumption, and boil-off losses remain the main limitations. Researchers are exploring a safe, compact, and efficient solid-state hydrogen storage method. Complex hydrides formed by the coordination of complex anions such as [BH4]− and [AlH4]− stabilized by metal cations such as Na+, Li+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ are a class of solid-state hydrogen storage materials with promising hydrogen storage capacities. In principle, most of them are putatively capable of meeting both the volumetric and gravimetric storage capacity goals set by the U.S. DoE. However, this class of promising materials suffers from poor reversibility, sluggish hydrogenation/dehydrogenation kinetics, and unfavorable thermodynamics. One intriguing approach to address these limitations is nanoconfinement in suitable host materials, benefiting from the synergetic effects of nanosizing, immobilization, destabilization, and, sometimes, catalysis for scaffolds that mutually induce catalytic effects. In this review, the major hydrogen storage techniques are briefly highlighted. Developments in the nanoconfinement of complex hydrides, potential host materials, synthetic methods, and advances in improving hydrogenation and dehydrogenation kinetics, thermodynamics, reversibility, and performance through nanoconfinement of complex hydrides are discussed. This paves the way for using complex hydrides in practical hydrogen economy technologies and contributes to the advancement of clean energy solutions.

Abstract:Abstract Metal hydrides are considered an easy and safe way to store hydrogen. Storage is one of the keys to the large-scale implementation of the so-called hydrogen economy, which will undoubtedly revolutionize the new vision of sustainable development towards a more environmentally friendly world. This paper presents a general review of some alloys based on TiCrV and TiCrVZr showing their advantages and challenges that must be developed for their implementation. The capacity of absorption and desorption as a function of time is shown using a Sieverts type device, the structure is studied by means of X-ray diffraction as well as its morphology by means of scanning electron microscopy. This paper shows the advantages and disadvantages of alloy synthesis methods based on transition metals, it is observed that hydrogen capacity increases in the process of fusion synthesis and decreases in the process by mechanical grinding, however the capacity desorption is not optimal at room temperature.
