Abstract:Organic photochromic materials have received considerable attention because of their potential for photonic applications, especially for fast and high density data storage. In 2000, Chemical Reviews published a special issue on photochromic materials including a review about the properties and applications of diarylethene photochromic compounds. Since then much impressive progress has been made in this area. Various new diarylethene derivatives have been prepared and examined. The tutorial review presented herein describes developments in diarylethene-based molecular switches made in the last three years. In addition, the synthetic aspects of diarylethene photochromic compounds, which are important issues and neglected in most previous reviews, have been included.

Abstract:Based on summarizing diversified performance of the diarylethene compounds, this review has a closer look of properties that can be photoswitched by using diarylethenes as a photoswitching of fluorescence, fluorescence resonance energy transfer, photoswitching of electrical conductivity, magnetism, liquid crystal and muti-addressable photochromic switches. The effect of the modality of the diarylethene compounds on the property of photoswitching is also introduced. Some future research topics of optical storage materials are discussed.

Abstract:A new photochromic diarylethene bears two chiral carbon atoms was designed and synthesized. This compound keeps in liquid state at room temperature which is the first example for 1,2-dithienylalkene derivatives to our knowledge. Owning to the liquid state, this compound undergoes a much faster reversible photochromic reaction than some 1,2-dithienylalkene derivatives in solid state, at ambient temperature. In addition, the fluorescence property and the uses of this compound in photo switches and non-reductive storage material were discussed.

Abstract:Organic photochromic materials based on diarylethenes and their derivatives have been intensively investigated from fundamental research to technological applications. This review briefly presents the latest advances in photochromic polymers containing diarylethenes and their derivatives. Polymer matrices doped with diarylethene derivatives and diarylethene electroactive polymers will also be included. The new and significant research in the field of photochromic diarylethenes polymers is highlighted. Their design and preparation methods, various properties and possible applications are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Molecular photoswitching is one of the most attractive subjects in recent years. Progress on photochromic diarylethene as two classes of molecular photoswitchings, i.e., fluorescent photoswitching and magnetic photoswitching are discussed in this paper. The different fluorescent efficiency between two isomers of diarylethene with fluorescent group can be applied in fluorescent photoswitchings;large intermolecular magnetic interaction change for two nitronyl nitroxides incorporated into photochromic diarylethene between ring-open and ring-close forms can be used on magnetic photoswitchings.
Multi-addressable molecular switches based on photochromic diarylethenes bearing a rhodamine unit

Abstract:Two novel diarylethene derivatives bearing a rhodamine unit have been successfully synthesized. Their unique multi-addressable switching characteristics as induced by chemical and optical dual inputs stimulation were observed using UV and FL measurements. The two diarylethenes showed excellent photochormism with alternating UV/vis light irradiation. Addition of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) protonated the diarylethenes, which resulted in good photochromism and notable fluorescence change via the FRET mechanism. Subsequent addition of triethanolamine base would neutralize and return both their protonated open-ring and closed-ring isomers to their original forms. It was found that the diarylethene bearing a rhodamine unit linked by a benzhydrazide bridge group was more sensitive, efficient and reacted faster to protonation by TFA when compared to the benzamide bridged derivative. Furthermore, the benzhydrazide bridged diarylethene derivative was found to be selective towards Cr(III), Al(III), or Ca(II) with significant color and fluorescence changes.

Abstract:The two distinct characters of diarylethene dialdehyde derivative-photochromism and solvatochromism are displayed in particular circumstances. The fluorescence of phosphorus (III) tetrabenzotriazacorrole can be reversibly regulated by the three kinds of status of the diarylethene dialdehyde, colorless ring-opened form, red ring-closed form, and blue ring-closed form, which is gated by visible light, ultraviolet light and ethanol individually or jointly. Based on this effect, a novel molecular INH logic switch is proposed.

Abstract:The last decade has witnessed the great expansion of the photochromic family, especially the most promising representative, diarylethene, owing to the excellent thermal stability and outstanding fatigue resistance. Till now, (perfluoro/hydro) cyclopentene bridge has been proved to be the best choice for diarylethenes. However, cyclopentene bridge also limits the molecular modification within the side aryl groups. In fact, other novel ethene bridges would enlarge the versatility of diarylethene architectures, enhance the photochromic performance, and finally endow other photo-modulated properties. This chapter summarizes the recent development in the diarylethenes with novel ethene bridge and their applications on self-assembly, photoswitcher, and molecular logic gates.

Abstract:Photochromic materials exhibit light-induced color change essentially due to the reversible structure change such as ring-open to ring-closed states upon photoirradiation, resulting in the distinct difference in photo induced chemical reactions/physical properties. These photochromic properties have attracted much attention on the applications of ophthalmic lenses, photo-switches, molecular actuators, logic gates, and information storages. Among various photochromic systems, organic diarylethenes have become increasing interest because of their high thermal stability. Particularly, the ethene bridge with perfluorocyclopentene can bring excellent fatigue resistance and bistability to the diarylethene family, thereby nowadays it is adopted for developing diarylethene derivatives. The ethene bridges have very great effects on photochromic properties since they are located exactly in the photoreaction center. Given the difficulty in structurally modifying the classic ethene bridge of perfluorocyclopentene owing to its chemical inertness, several other ethene bridges have emerged to achieve higher performance and more applications. This review covers the latest research progresses on the important ethene bridges and their corresponding diarylethene derivatives, and their application prospects.
Construction and Properties of Multi-Addressable Switching System Based on A Photochromic Diarylethene

Abstract:A multi-addressable switching system has been constructed by employing photochromic diarylethene 1a, which is obtained by coupling photochromic 3,4-bis(5-formyl-2-methylthien-3-yl)-2,5-dihydrothiophene with 8-hydroxy-2-methylquinoline, as model compound. It is found that 1a exhibits ring-opening and ring-closing photoisomerization with UV/Vis light irradiation. Addition of trifluoroacetic acid to solution of 1a produces protonated diarylethene 2a, and 2a also performs photochromic behavior with distinguished color change. Both protonated ring-open isomer 2a and ring-closed isomer 2b reverse back to 1a and 1b by neutralization with base solution. Besides, a complex diarylethene 3a is formed when boron trifluoride diethyl etherate is added to a solution of 1a, and it is found that 3a also undergoes excellent photoisomerization.

Abstract:Photochromic compounds have attracted much attention for their potential applications in photo-actuators, optoelectronic devices and optical recording techniques. This interest is driven by their key photochemical and photophysical properties, which can be reversibly modulated by light irradiation. Among them, diarylethene compounds have garnered extensive investigation due to their excellent thermal stability of both open- and closed-form isomers, robust fatigue resistance, high photocyclization quantum yield and good photochromic performance in both solution and solid phases. However, a notable limitation in expanding the utility of diarylethene compounds is the necessity for ultraviolet light to induce their photochromism. This requirement poses challenges, as ultraviolet light can be detrimental to biological tissues, and its penetration is often restricted in various media. This review provides an overview of design strategies employed in the development of visible-light-responsive diarylethene compounds. These design strategies serve as a guideline for molecular design, with the potential to significantly broaden the applications of all-visible-light-activated diarylethene compounds in the realms of materials science and biomedical science.

Abstract:Due to the potential applications to many fields, photochromic compounds as functional materials have been widely focused. In particular, diarylethenes have become the promising candidates of photochromic compounds because of the excellent thermal stability of both isomers and resistance to high fatigue. Numerous studies on the synthesis and characters of photochromic diarylethene derivatives have been carried out in various research fields, such as memory media, optical switching, logic circuit, liquid crystal display and magnetic materials. In this paper, the methods of preparations of photochromic diarylethenes are reviewed. Based on current research and existing products, some new and future approaches in this fascinating area are thoroughly discussed.

Abstract:Photochromic materials are those which can undergo reversible photo-switches between two different states or isomers upon alternative irradiation with different wavelengths of light accompanied by distinct photophysical and photochemical properties. Inspired by their special photo-switchable characteristics, a variety of light-driven functional materials have been exploited, such as ultrahigh-density optical data storage, molecular switches, logic gates, molecular wires, optic/electronic devices, multi-photon devices, surface/nanoparticle devices, liquid crystals, bio-imaging and so on. Apart from these, further creation of optoelectronic and photo-optical devices based on photochromic molecular switches which operate at both molecular and supramolecular levels have recently attracted many attentions. Thus photo-switchable compounds also have played an important role in sensing, self-assembly, aggregation-induced enhanced emission and photo-controlled biological systems. In particular, dithienylethene derivatives are one of the most promising families of photochromic compounds due to their excellent thermal-stability, remarkable fatigue-resistance, rapid response and fairly high photocyclization quantum yields as well as reactivity in the solid state. According to our recent research achievements, this article provides an overview of recent exciting progress mainly in the field of photochromic dithienylethene derivatives, from systems in solution to modified functional surfaces. Furthermore, based on current development of these photo-switchable systems, further development as well as existing challenges are also discussed and put in prospect.
Synthesis and photochromism of a novel diarylethene bearing xylosyltriazolyl groups

Abstract:A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene, 1-{2-methyl-5-[5-(2,3,5-trihydroxyl-beta-D-xylosyl)-3-(1,2,3-triazolyl)]methylene-3-thienyl}-2- [2-methyl-5-(4-methoxylphenyl)methyl-3-thienyl] perfluorocyclopentene (1a), was synthesized, and its photochromic properties were investigated in detail. The compound exhibited good photochromism both in acetonitrile solution and in PMMA film with alternating irradiation by UV/vis light, and the maxima absorption of its closed-ring isomer 1b are 556 and 560 nm, respectively. There almost no fluorescence switches of la in acetonitrile solution and PMMA amorphous film. The diarylethene la has promising application for photo-switching, which can use for data storage.

Abstract:Four photochromic diarylethenes with different spectra in. open and closed form were synthesized simultaneously. Irradiation of the open, form with UV light results in essentially quantitative photocyclization to the closed form. The compounds show attractive optical properties and are expected to be used in optical storage and photoswitch.

Abstract:Photochromic fluorescent switches, whose emission can be reversibly switched upon light irradiation, have emerged as extremely promising materials in the last decade owing to their potential applications in biological and materials sciences. Diarylethylenes are a promising class of photochromic molecules with excellent phototriggering properties. Although some diarylethenes themselves can be used as fluorescent switches, a more efficient way to prepare photochromic fluorescent switches is to combine diarylethene with an energy-level matched fluorophore via non-covalent assembly, which not only fully utilizes the diversity of fluorophores and diarylethenes, but also easily enables the integration of multiple functions. Moreover, non-covalent assembly methods often bring many unintended results, favorable for the design and fabrication of the new generation of smart materials. Here, the construction of diarylethene-based photochromic fluorescent switches by non-covalent assembly is reviewed. The structure design principle of diarylethenes and fluorophores, the cross-talk between different components and the integration of stimuli-response features in the photochromic fluorescence switching systems are discussed. Non-covalent assembly modes and photochromic fluorescence switching mechanisms that have great guiding significance for the design of photochromic fluorescent switches are also summarized.

Abstract:<p>Fluorescent photochromic molecules that exhibit distinct light‐triggered changes in their emission colors are highly desirable for the fabrication of smart soft materials and advanced photonic devices. α‐Cyanodiarylethenes, that is, α‐cyano‐functionalized diarylethenes, as alternative "non‐azo" Z/E photochromic molecular switches, are popular choices due to their unique characteristics such as their aggregation‐induced emission or aggregation‐induced‐enhanced emission behavior in their self‐assembled states, and visible changes in fluorescence colors during Z/E photoisomerization. In recent years, the development of fluorescent photochromic α‐cyanodiarylethene‐based compounds including α‐cyanostilbenes, dicyanodistyrylbenzenes, and diaryldicyanoethenes, has mainly focused on molecular design, photochemical and photophysical behavior in solution, and smart soft matter technologies. In this review, recent significant achievements in light‐responsive systems based on the Z/E photoisomerization of fluorescent photochromic α‐cyanodiarylethene switches that span the range from liquid crystals to gels and finally to self‐assembled nanostructures, are highlighted. The smart soft materials constructed from α‐cyanodiarylethene molecular switches find use in a plethora of areas, including display, sensing, encrypting, actuating, and biomedical imaging applications, among others. The review concludes with a brief perspective on some major challenges and opportunities for the future development of light‐responsive smart soft photonic materials.</p>
