Abstract:A method to prepare monodispersed silica nanospheres as templates for fabrication of nickel-silica composite hollow spheres is presented. The structures for both silica nanospheres and nickel-silica composite hollow spheres were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The catalytic activity for acetone hydrogenation on nickel-silica composite hollow spheres was evaluated, and high conversion efficiency of 70% with good selectivity of 82.7% to 2-propanol was observed. The mechanism of high catalytic activity and good selectivity in acetone hydrogenation reaction was discussed.

Abstract:Mesoporous carbon materials with ultra-thin carbon pore walls and highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles have been successfully prepared by using two different SBA-15 silicas as hard templates and 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) as a carbon precursor. The nickel precursor was a concentrated nickel nitrate hexahydrate [Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O] solution in 2-propanol, which was added to the carbon-silica nanocomposite prior to thermal treatment. The samples studied were analyzed by thermogravimetry (TG), nitrogen adsorption at -196 degrees C, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and in situ electron diffraction X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). While TG analysis revealed carbon contents lower than 30 wt.-%, nitrogen adsorption provided information about the homogeneity of the carbon thin film deposited onto the mesopore walls of the ordered silica templates SBA-15. The templates, carbon-silica nanocomposites, and carbon inverse replicas with nickel nanoparticles exhibit uniform pores, high surface areas, and large pore volumes. Partially graphitic carbon was identified by the presence of a characteristic G band in the Raman spectra, whereas the diffraction peak attributed to the stacking of graphene planes was not observed by powder XRD. The presence of ordered domains in the carbon materials studied was confirmed by small angle XRD and STEM imaging. In addition, the STEM images revealed that the nickel nanoparticles are uniform in size, ca. 3 nm, and are homogeneously dispersed on the tubular carbon walls. A few larger clusters of nickel, ca. 60 nm, present on the external surface, were identified by powder XRD as metallic Ni. The in situ EDX revealed that the small nanoparticles are largely composed of Ni with traces of NiO. Similar nanoparticle dispersions have been reported only for Ni-containing multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), whereas previously reported ordered mesoporous carbon materials, CMK-3, possess larger Ni/NiO nanoparticles. Abstract:In this work, we introduce a modified novel silica sol–gel process to synthesize hexagonal close-packed (hcp) and face-centered cubic (fcc) nickel (Ni) nanoparticles supported on amorphous carbon and silica matrix. The supporting of amorphous carbon and silica can prevent the Ni nanoparticles from aggregating and being oxided which would result in the loss of their magnetism and dispersibility. The phase structure of the Ni nanoparticles which were obtained from the gels pyrolyzed from 250 to 350 °C is hcp structure, whereas that of the Ni nanoparticles pyrolyzed at 750 °C is fcc structure. The grain sizes of the hcp Ni nanoparticles calcined at 250 °C range from 5 to 20 nm in diameter, and that of the fcc Ni nanoparticles calcined at 750 °C range in 7–35 nm. The studies of magnetic properties of the hcp and fcc Ni nanoparticles show that both have quite different magnetic behaviors.

Abstract:Hexagonal α-NiS nanocrystals and Ni3S4 nanoplates have been prepared by a colloidal chemical process in oleylamine. X-Ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to characterize the products. The self-assembly hollow spheres by α-NiS nanocrystals are observed. XPS study indicates that the products' surface contains excess sulfur which would enhance the density of active sites on the catalyst surface for hydrogenolysis process. Magnetization measurement indicates that the α-NiS and Ni3S4 are no longer antiferromagnetic; both of them show paramagnetism due to the size effect.

Abstract:Mesoporous materials containing heteroelements have a huge potential for use as catalysts, exchangers, and adsorbents due to their tunable nanometer-sized pores and exceptionally large internal surfaces accessible to bulky organic molecules. In the present work, ordered mesoporous silica containing Ni atoms as active sites was synthesized by a new low-temperature method of condensation of silica precursors on a micellar template from aqueous solutions in the presence of nickel salt. The homogeneity of the resulting product was achieved by introducing ammonia and ammonium salt as a buffer to maintain a constant pH value. The obtained materials were characterized by nitrogen sorption, X-ray and neutron diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. Their morphology consists of polydisperse spherical particles 50–300 nm in size, with a hexagonally ordered channel structure, high specific surface area (ABET = 900–1200 m2/g), large pore volume (Vp = 0.70–0.90 cm3/g), average mesopore diameter of about 3 nm, and narrow pore size distribution. Adsorption tests for methylene blue show sorption capacities reaching 39–42 mg/g at alkaline pH. The advantages of producing nickel silicates by this method, in contrast to precipitation from silicon alkoxides, are the low cost of reagents, fire safety, room-temperature processing, and the absence of specific problems associated with the use of ethanol as a solvent, as well as the absence of the inevitable capture of organic matter in the precipitation process.

Abstract:In recent years, nickel nanoparticles (Ni NPs) have attracted a growing attention from the scientific research community, because they are inexpensive, eco-friendly, facile to prepare, and they could be used in a panoply of applications, ranging from catalysis to sensors and from fuel cells to photoelectrochemical devices. This review article recapitulates different synthesis methods which have been used to prepare unsupported and silica-supported Ni NPs and their utilisation as nanocatalysts in heterogeneous catalysis and photocatalysis. Firstly, various widely used techniques to synthesize unsupported Ni NPs have been briefly discussed. This includes ball milling, mechanochemical synthesis, laser ablation, and ion sputtering as top–down methods, and physical vapour deposition, chemical vapour deposition, sol–gel method, chemical precipitation, chemical reduction, hydrothermal method, solvothermal, spray pyrolysis, and biological techniques as bottom–up methods. Subsequently, the widely applied methods to incorporate Ni NPs in different types of silica (e.g. SBA-15, MCM-41, MCM-48, TUD-1) are briefly reviewed including impregnation, precipitation, and colloid methods. Finally, recent applications of both unsupported and supported Ni NPs in heterogeneous catalysis and photocatalysis have been discussed, with brief investigation of the effect of Ni NP size and aggregation on their catalytic activity and reusability.

Abstract:Cu-Ni alloy nanoparticles (12 +/- 3 nm) encapsulated in a silica shell have been successfully synthesized through amicroemulsion method followed by polymerization of TEOS. The morphologies of the CuNi@ SiO2 nanocomposites can be controlled by tuning the metal ion concentrations. The alloy nanostructure shows a superior performance in catalytic methane dry reforming to the pure Ni nanocomposite catalyst.

Abstract:For improving stability and efficiency of noble metal nanomaterials, a straightforward one-step method was developed to synthesize Au-SiO2 composite nanospheres. Monodisperse hybrid silica nanospheres that had anilino-methyl on the surfaces were prepared first. The as-prepared hybrid silica nanospheres were then used to obtain Au nanocrystal through the redox reaction of HAuCl4 and anilino-methyl. This approach led to a better utilization of Au. By adjusting the surface morphologies and the particle sizes, the functional nanospheres displayed different surface-enhanced Raman scattering effects of Rhodamine 6G. The composite nanospheres showed high catalytic activity and good reusability in catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol because of their active gold surface.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous carbon/nanoparticle nickel composites have been synthesized via multi-component co-assembly strategy associated with a direct carbonization process from resol, tetraethyl orthosilicate, Ni(NO3)2·6H2O and triblock copolymer F127 and subsequent silicates removal with NaOH solution. The incorporation of rigid silicates in the pore walls can reduce framework shrinkage significantly during the pyrolysis process, creating large mesopores. Moreover, plenty of complementary small pores caused by silica removal are observed in the carbon pore walls, which contribute to the large surface area. The mesoporous carbon/nanoparticle nickel composites with a low Ni content (1.7wt%) possess ordered two-dimensional hexagonal structure, large mesopores (6.8nm), high surface area (1580m2g−1) and large pore volume (1.42cm3g−1). Magnetic Ni nanocrystals with particle size of ∼16.0nm are confined in the matrix of carbon frameworks. With increase of Ni content, the surface area and pore volume of the composites decrease. The particle size of metallic Ni nanocrystals increases up to 20.3nm, when its content increases to 10wt%. These carbon/nanoparticle nickel composites with high surface area, large pore size and superparamagnetic property show excellent adsorption properties for bulky dye fuchsin base and an easy separation procedure.
Highly Dispersed Nickel Particles Encapsulated in Multi‐hollow Silicalite‐1 Single Crystal Nanoboxes: Effects of Siliceous Deposits and Phosphorous Species on the Catalytic Performances

Abstract:Multi‐hollow silicalite‐1 single crystals (MH) were prepared for the first time by an original synthesis pathway by using tetrabutylphosphonium hydroxide (TBPOH) as a mild desilicating agent. This new generation of hierarchical zeolite allowed the encapsulation of nanoparticles (NPs) featuring an enhanced confinement of the metallic guest and a thin wall thickness. The MH catalyst exhibited a better stability for methane steam reforming at 700 °C than a single‐hollow counterpart (SH). Ni average particle size could be kept lower than 4 nm after 20 h on stream for the MH sample. However, a detailed analysis of kinetic data of the structure‐insensitive CO methanation used as a model reaction revealed that the sample activity was adversely affected by two main factors deriving from the preparation steps. First, a siliceous over‐layer derived from the decomposition of intermediate Ni phyllosilicates, which partly covered the resulting Ni nanoparticles. Second, phosphorus from the templates remained in the samples, probably forming a Ni–P compound upon reduction. The overall catalytic activities observed here were therefore a complex interplay of improved dispersion and poisonous effects.

Abstract:This study designs a confined self‐reduction route for preparing nanocomposites using diverse metal ions‐introduced Al‐MIL‐96 as precursors. The obtained nanocomposite containing "hardness unit", amorphous Al2O3 framework, can restrain the volumetric expansion and "softness unit", Ni nanocrystals, can improve the catalytic activity for polysulfide conversion. This work provides a new strategy for designing sulfur or other catalyst hosts. Sulfur cathodes in Li–S batteries suffer significant volumetric expansion and lack of catalytic activity for polysulfide conversion. In this study, a confined self‐reduction synthetic route is developed for preparing nanocomposites using diverse metal ions (Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+)‐introduced Al‐MIL‐96 as precursors. The Ni2+‐introduced Al‐MIL‐96‐derived nanocomposite contains a "hardness unit", amorphous aluminum oxide framework, to restrain the volumetric expansion, and a "softness unit", Ni nanocrystals, to improve the catalytic activity. The oxygen‐potential diagram theoretically explains why Ni2+ is preferentially reduced. Postmortem microstructure characterization confirms the suppressive volume expansion. The in situ ultraviolet–visible measurements are performed to probe the catalytic activity of polysulfide conversion. This study provides a new perspective for designing nanocomposites with "hardness units" and "softness units" as sulfur or other catalyst hosts.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous Pd/NiO composites were successfully prepared through a hydrothermal and in-situ reduction protocol. NiO nanoparticles less than 10 nm aggregated together to form irregular NiO nanosheets and finally composed the flower-like NiO sphere. When Pd nanoparticles were evenly dispersed and loaded, the resulting materials showed high catalytic activity for low temperature CO oxidation especially under ambient conditions. For 3 wt% Pd loaded catalyst, T50 for 1 vol% CO conversion was as low as -15 degrees C under a space velocity of 15 000 ml h(-1) gcat(-1). The kinetic study revealed the presence of water molecules can drastically lower the activation energy and finally promote the CO oxidation process. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Intercalation of silica-supported nickel nanoparticles within mesoporous silica has been achieved through chemical reduction of nickel silicate with mesoporous silica ( mSiO2) coated on inner and outer surfaces. Formation of nickel nanoparticles was controlled at nickel silicate-silica interface and was well-confined by mSiO2 coating. Doping of other transition metals has been accomplished at the stage of nickel silicate formation, because of similarity in critical stability constants of respective metal salts. Doped nickel silicates were able to produce nickel-based bimetallic and trimetallic alloy nanoparticles within the final dual-shell configuration. This type of catalyst has been tested for both liquid- and gas-phase reactions, all showing good activity and selectivity. Ni nanoparticles could serve as the active catalyst or activity enhancer to other alloyed metals for different reactions. Especially for selective hydrogenation of trans-cinnamaldehyde, 100% selectivity toward hydrocinnamaldehyde at full conversion has been achieved without using noble metals. Spent catalysts in all cases showed no changes in terms of morphology and crystal structure, indicating this type of catalyst was robust under such reaction conditions, including gas-solid reaction systems.

Abstract:A series of nickel-containing mesoporous silica samples (Ni-SiO2) with different nickel content (3.1%-13.2%) were synthesized by the evaporation-induced self-assembly method. Their catalytic activity was tested in carbon dioxide reforming of methane. The characterization results revealed that the catalysts, e.g., 6.7% Ni-SiO2, with highly dispersed small nickel particles, exhibited excellent catalytic activity and long-term stability. The metallic nickel particle size was significantly affected by the metal anchoring effect between metallic nickel particles and unreduced nickel ions in the silica matrix. A strong anchoring effect was suggested to account for the remaining of small Ni particle size and the improved catalytic performance.
