Abstract:The phase stability, site preference and mechanical properties of ThMn12 type rare-earth intermetallic compound R(Co, T)12 (R=Er or Dy, T=V, Ti, Cr, Mo, Mn, Nb, Ni, Cu) are studied via interatomic pair potentials based on Chen’s lattice inversion technique. The results show that the ternary elements can decrease the internal energy and stabilize the ThMn12 structure. The calculations also show that the internal energy is the lowest when the ternary elements occupy the symmetrical 8i site. All of those are in good agreement with the experimental lattice parameters and X-ray diffraction data. The results indicate that the converted pair potentials are valid for studying the structural properties of certain kinds of complex-structured materials.

Abstract:The phase stability and site preference of T (T=Cr, Mn) in Fe7-xTxC3 have been studied based on the pair potentials obtained by the lattice inversion method. The results show that T (T=Cr, Mn) atoms substitute for Fe with a strong preference for the 6c(1) sites and the order of site preference is 6c(1), 6c(2), and 2b. The calculated lattice parameters and magnetic properties are in good agreement with the experimental data. Moreover, the total and partial phonon densities of states and the phonon dispersion curves are evaluated for the first time for the Fe6TC3 (T=Cr, Mn) compounds with the hexagonal structure. The properties related to lattice vibration, such as the phonon density of states, phonon dispersion curves, specific heat, vibrational entropy, and Debye temperatures are also evaluated.

Abstract:The transition process from ordered SmCo5 (CaCu5-type) to disordered SmCo7 (TbCu7-type) is successfully simulated by using inverted ab initio pair potentials. The structure properties of this disordered TbCu7-type compound, including lattice constants, X-ray diffraction, phase stability, site preference have been calculated and the calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental data. Also, a new structure deformation of 3g sublattice in SmCo7−xTix is reported.

Abstract:The phase stability and site preference of some ternary elements of ThMn 12 type rare-earth intermetallic compounds R(Co,T) 12 and R(Co,T) 12 N x are evaluated based on ab initio converted interatomic potentials. The calculated results show that adding either Mo or Mn makes the crystal cohesive energy decrease markedly. It proved that these elements can stabilize R(Co,T) 12 with ThMn 12 structure. The systemic energy is the lowest when T atoms occupy symmetrically 8i sites. For T=Mo or Mn, the doped nitrogen atom does not affect the order of site preference of these stabilizing elements. Moreover, the nitrogen atom occupies 2b sites. According to the calculated results, it can be seen that lattice parameters and X-rays are in good agreement with experiment. All the above results indicate that the ab initio converted pair potentials are effective for the calculation of these kinds of anisotropy materials and some related nitrides.

Abstract:An atomistic simulation of the phase stability and site preference of the Th2Co6+xAl19-x and U2Co6+xAl19-x compounds has been carried out using a series of interatomic pair potentials based on the lattice inversion method. Calculated results show that the lattice parameters are found in good agreement with the experimental values. The Co atoms substitute for Al without changing the crystal symmetry and preferentially occupy the 4gAl(1) site. Moreover, some simple mechanical properties, such as the elastic constants and bulk modulus, are investigated for the actinide compounds with complex structures. This may be regarded as an attempt to predict the structural and mechanical properties for the actinide materials with complex structure.

Abstract:The structure of intermetallics Sm(Fe,T)12 is analyzed via a quasi-ab initio pair potentials ΦFe–Fe(r), ΦSm–Fe(r), ΦSm–Sm(r), ΦSm–T(r), ΦFe–T(r) and ΦT–T(r). The calculation results show that each of Cr, V, Mo and Ti significantly decreases the cohesive energy of Sm(Fe,T)12, and thus stabilizes its structure of ThMn12. The calculated lattice constants coincide quite well with experimental values. The sequence of site preference occupation is 8i, 8j and 8f, with the 8i occupation corresponding to the greatest energy decrease. The calculated results also show that each of Co, Cu, Ni and Sc does not stabilize the system with the structure of ThMn12. The calculated crystal structure can recover after either an overall wide-range macro-deformation or atomic random motion, demonstrating that an Sm–Fe–T system has the stable structure of ThMn12. The crystal space group remaining consistent at different temperatures is also shown in this paper. All of the results verify that the first principle potentials based on the lattice inversion technique are effective.

Abstract:The phase stability of Nd2Fe17−xTx (TV, Ti, Nb, x=0–1.2) is tested by many means including random atom shift, global deformation and high temperature disturbance under the control of the ab initio potentials. The T atoms substitute for Fe without changing the crystal symmetry and preferentially occupy the 6c site, which is in good agreement with experimental results. The Zr atoms prefer to substitute for Nd atoms in Nd2Fe17. Moreover, the introduction of ternary elements slightly enlarge the calculated Nd2Fe17−xTx (TV, Ti, Nb) volume, which is also close to experiment. All the results indicate that the potentials are valid for studying some structural properties of the intermetallics.
Superconductivity in the Quasi-One-dimensional Ternary Compound Ca3Pt4Bi8

Abstract:We report that a quasi-one-dimensional ternary compound Ca3Pt4Bi8 exhibits bulk superconductivity at 0.6 K probed by dc magnetic susceptibility and specific-heat experiments, coexisting with a surface superconductivity at 1.17 K probed by electrical resistivity measurements. The two superconducting phases exhibit significantly different upper critical fields. In electrical resistivity measurements, the resistivity exhibits strong anisotropy and the obtained upper critical field is strongly anisotropic as well, implying two-dimensional (2D) superconductivity. Meanwhile, the bulk upper critical field measured by the dc magnetic susceptibility and specific heat is much smaller than that obtained by electrical resistivity measurements. Moreover, the angular dependence of the upper critical field mu 0Hc2 based on the resistivity measurements is consistent with the 2D Tinkham model. Combined with the study of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), 2D superconductivity should occur on the surface of the sample where a thin shell surrounding the bulk phase forms possibly due to a kind of spontaneous chemical change. The first-principles calculations unveil a complicated Fermi surface with ten bands crossing the Fermi level. Some steep bands among these reflect the quasi-one-dimensional nature. This quasi-one-dimensional ternary compound exhibits interesting surface superconductivity in addition to the bulk superconductivity which is worthy of further study.

Abstract:The intermetallics M7B3 (M = Rh, Ru) have been studied to ascertain the effect of partial replacement of M by T (T = Fe, Co) on their phase stability and site preference. The calculated results show that Fe or Co atoms preferentially substitute M at the 2b sites. The calculated lattice parameters are in good agreement with the experimental data. We have calculated the electronic density of states and magnetic properties of M7-xTxB3 compounds. Besides, the phonon density of states of M7-xTxB3, the according specific heat, vibrational entropy and Debye temperature are calculated, and a qualitative analysis with pair potentials is also carried out. Abstract:Based on the inverted quasi-ab initio pair potentials, the phase stability and site preference of R2Co17-xMnx (R = Nd, Sm, Gd) intermetallics with a rhombohedral Th2Zn17-type structure are studied. In the calculations, the crystal binding energy of R2Co17-xMnx decreases with increasing Mn concentration, proving that Mn atoms are beneficial to the phase stability of R2Co17-xMnx. The calculated preferential occupation site of the stabilizing element Mn is found to be the 6c site, which accords with the experiments. Qualitative analyses are carried out on the behaviour of the Curie temperature and magnetocrystalline anisotropy. All the results indicate that the pair potentials based on the lattice inversion method can effectively give a deeper insight into the structure and property of complex materials.

Abstract:The stability of the intermetallics Gd3(Fe,T)29 and the site preferences of the ternary 3d or 4d transition element T were investigated using a series of inter-atomic pair potentials. The calculated results show that either V, Ti, Cr, or Mo atoms can stabilize Gd3(Fe,T)29 with monoclinic symmetry. The order of site preference of these stabilizing elements T is 4i2, 4i1 and 4g, where 4i2 corresponds to the greatest energy decrease. The calculated lattice parameters were found to be in good agreement with experiment. It is surprising that simple pair potentials can describe these extremely anisotropic materials. The calculated results also show that the addition of Cu and Ag does not stabilize the Gd3(Fe,T)29 phase.

Abstract:Abstract The ternary Al–Pd–Co V-phase and U-phase (reported previously) were studied by powder X-ray and electron diffraction. The V-phase was found to have a primitive monoclinic structure [ a =1.0068(2) nm, b =0.3755(1) nm, c =0.6512(4) nm and β =102.38(6)° for Al 70.0 Pd 9.2 Co 20.8 ]. The U-phase was found to have a C -centered monoclinic structure [ a =1.9024(4) nm, b =2.9000(4) nm, c =1.3140(4) nm; β =117.26(3)° for Al 69.1 Pd 16.5 Co 14.4 ].

Abstract:The effect of the ternary element on the structural properties of YFe12−xTx (T=Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Zr, Nb, Mo, W) has been studied by using interatomic pair potentials based on ab initio method and lattice inversion equations. Calculated results show that adding ternary element T makes the crystal cohesive energy of YFe12−xTx decrease markedly, which indicates that T helps stabilize the 1:12 phases. The ternary elements T prefer to occupy the 8i sites in these compounds. The calculated results are found in good agreement with the values deduced from experiments. Furthermore, we have calculated the thermal expansion of YFe11V compounds with the ThMn12 structure. The method utilized in the present investigation offers a rather easy and direct way to study the structural properties of YFe12−xTx.
