Abstract:Taking advantage of the printed electronic interconnection technology and development of radio frequency identification (RFID) chip, a novel design and integration approaches for fabricated sensing RFID tags on flexible substrates is presented in this paper. The design is a semi-passive tag which includes a RFID chip, an additional microcontroller unit (MCU), a LED, and external sensors. The antennas and all electronic components interconnects were screen-printed on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate using silver ink. Their behaviors are in a good agreement with those simulations in electromagnetic simulation software. The acquisition of sensor data through answering to the RFID reader directly. Practical measurements have validated the reliability of the technique in low energy consumption and shown important advantages to monitor environment and display operating information.

Abstract:This article demonstrates in-depth electromagnetic analysis of a radio frequency identification tag antenna manufactured by inkjet printing technology on different paper substrates to achieve ultra-low cost flexible radio frequency identification tags using a novel hole-matching technique for reducing the consumption of substrate material, and conductive ink. Nevertheless, the electromagnetic properties of the paper substrate are vulnerable to various environmental effects. Thus, the proposed antenna design is optimized for consistent wideband performance throughout the complete UHF radio frequency identification band (860960 MHz) while presenting a greater degree of material insensitivity. An advanced antenna design methodological analysis is performed to accomplish an extended read range, while exhibiting benchmarking results when across cardboard cartons filled with metal or water containing objects.

Abstract:Fully integrated printed RFID antennas show potential solution for item level labeling applications. In order to accommodate the antenna during the package printing process, it is vastly preferred that antenna structures are printed on paper substrates. However, the electromagnetic properties and thickness of paper substrates are susceptible to change due to various environmental effects. Thus, adequately consistent in performance and material insensitive printed Quadrate Bowtie RFID antennas are proposed. This paper presents an in-depth efficient optimization for high performance tag antenna designs for operability in frequencies 866-868 MHz & 902-928 MHz. It is demonstrated that the proposed antennas can tolerate a considerable variation in the permittivity on thin paper substrates, and present benchmarking results when n across metal and water containing objects.

Abstract:In this paper, novel Bowtie antennas which cover complete UHF RFID band (860-960 MHz), fabricated on various ultra-low-cost substrates using state-of-the-art printing technologies are investigated as an approach that aims to accommodate the antenna during the package printing process whilst faster production on commercially available paper. The proposed antenna structures are evaluated in reference to circuit and field concepts, to exhibit extreme degree of functional versatility. These antennas are developed to cater the variations which appear in electromagnetic properties and thickness of paper substrate due to various environmental effects. Computed (simulated) and well-agreed measurement results confirm a superior performance of the tag modules while stepping towards next generation of "green" tags.

Abstract:Paper substrate is one of the paramount nominees for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags but at the same time it is extremely prone towards environmental changes. In this paper, antennas for UHF RFID tags on paper based substrate are investigated and analyzed for the first time to evaluate the effect of change in dielectric constant on the antenna parameters and performance. On the basis of analysis a concrete meander line antenna is proposed, designed and evaluated which has tremendous immunity towards variation in dielectric constant.

Abstract:For the minimization of RFID tag antenna, we designed a printed folded dipole antenna working at 2.4 GHz. And a mirror compensation technology was introduced to improve the radiation feature of antenna with better return loss characteristic and directivity. The simulated results show that when VSWR (vertical standing wave ratio) is less than 2, the antenna bandwidth is up to 0.39 GHz absolutely and to 15.48% relatively. Considering engineering processes, the influences of dielectric constant, board thickness, folding degree and other parameters on the properties of this antenna are particularly studied. On the basis, a dual-frequency folded dipole antenna is proposed, which can work in two main frequency for RFID system, i.e. 915 MHz and 2.4 GHz. Moreover, an antenna sample made on this novel structure has been tested and the results show that the bandwidth of antenna is improved in further, along with hemisphere directional radiation characteristics.

Abstract:The development of low cost directly printable RFID tag antennas is essential for item level tracking. We present evolutionary design approach to achieve robust extremely versatile RFID antennas on paper/flexible substrates which allow a simple integration directly on, e.g., paperboard in a roll-to-roll production line. Fully integrated printed tags for "green" electronics are designed for operability in frequencies 866-868 MHz & 902-928 MHz. We present benchmarking results for various challenges of antennas in terms of ruggedness, reliability and flexing performance.

Abstract:Utilizing the advantages of planar equiangular spiral antennas and Archimedean spiral antennas, a composite spiral antenna structure were designed and simulated. Due to the in-phase reflection and photon localization characteristic of PBG structure, the antenna radiation performance could be improved and the bandwidth be broaden. Considering engineering processes, the influences of the substrate's thickness and dielectric constant, and also different materials on whichRFID tags to be sticked, on the performances of the designed antenna are particularly studied. We also made an antenna sample and measured it. The results show that this antenna has large performance redundancy, good resonant frequency stability and adaptability in high dielectric constant environmental.

Abstract:The novel idea of integrating Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) with sensors along with other wireless applications by using single tag antenna is implemented, by fabricating proposed antenna using state-of-the-art inkjet printing technology on commercially available paper substrates. For the first time, a parametric analysis is performed for realization of the planar log-spiral antenna on paper for operational range from 0.8 to 3.0 GHz, which also exhibits excellent coverage throughout numerous RFID Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) bands, and for other wireless applications. The ANSYS HFSSTM tool is used to design and predict the performance of the proposed antenna in terms of radiation pattern and input impedance.

Abstract:This paper presents an inverted-F antenna (IFA), characterized by its high compactness, cost-effectiveness, and suitability for easy integration into printing processes. The passband is 902.97-927.03 MHz with a maximum gain of 1.77 dBi. It is specifically designed for radio frequency identification (RFID) or internet of things (IoT) applications within the 915 MHz industrial scientific medical (ISM) band. Optimized for short circuits and feed lines, it demonstrates favorable impedance matching characteristics $(\mathbf{47.3}-\mathbf{j}\mathbf{0.27}\ \mathbf{\Omega})$ and can be seamlessly integrated into printed circuit board (PCB) designs with an overall size of $\mathbf{12}\times \mathbf{5}\times \mathbf{0.87}(\mathbf{L}\times \mathbf{W}\times \mathbf{H})$ .

Abstract:This paper focuses on the process dependence of an inkjet printed folded dipole antenna based on practical parameters in a typical inkjet printing process. We present the effect of width variations and number of overprinting times on the antenna properties such as gain, radiation efficiency and input impedance. Furthermore we investigate the read range degradation of the tag on which the antenna is attached, due to width or thickness variations. In addition, an comparison between an inkjet printed antenna on a regular paper substrate and a copper antenna on Printed Circuit Board (PCB) was made, manifesting the strong competitiveness of the printed silver antenna as a low cost solution.

Abstract:The number of applications that use radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology has grown continually in the last few years. In this presentation we will present the results of research on the electromagnetic environment on RFID systems. We analyze the effects of UHF MHz China RFID system near a GSM frequency bands. Kurokawa's method of calculating the power reflection coefficient from the Smith chart in the situation is applied to passive RFID tag design. The performance analysis of a specific RFID tag is presented to be compared with the theory. One of our objectives has been to examine tag designs that are less sensitive to their environment, in that their radiation patters and tag response characteristics change little when placed on different distance and orientation. We introduce a technique for deploying RFID systems and engineering solutions based on fundamental electromagnetic understanding. The paper will also explore tag designs that use electromagnetic models to simulate and engineer RFID systems.

Abstract:A parametric analysis is performed for a wideband Archimedean spiral antenna in recognition of an emerging concept to integrate RFID along with several applications by using a single antenna. The antenna is fabricated using state-of-the-art inkjet printing technology on various commercially available paper substrates to provide the low-cost, flexible RF modules for the next generation of "green" electronics. The effects on electromagnetic characteristics of the planar Archimedean spiral antenna, due to the use of paper are investigated besides other parameters. Abstract:This paper describes a novel Flexo, Screen and Inkjet printed rounded edges bowtie antenna with T-matching stubs on paper, Kapton (HN) and Teonex Q51 substrate. Paper is one of the paramount nominees for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, for the reason that it is one of the widely and the cheapest available substrates. Kapton (HN) and Teonex Q51 are distinguished for their flexibility and reliability. The antenna exhibits compact size with outstanding read range of 4 meters and complete coverage of UHF RFID band (860-960 MHz). The results show extreme immunity of versatile antenna against harsh environments. These antennas are flexible which give autonomy for their applications.

Abstract:<p>A reliable and low‐cost solution‐processing procedure to synthesize a highly adhesive flexible metal antenna with low resistivity for radio‐frequency identification device (RFID) tags on paper substrates via inkjet printing combined with surface modification and electroless deposition (ELD) is demonstrated in this paper. Through the surface modification of colloidal solution of hydrolyzed stannous chloride and chitosan solution, the paper‐based substrate is able to reduce the penetration rate of ink and further increase the adsorption amount of silver ions, which could create a catalytic activating layer to catalyze the subsequent ELD of a conductive deposited metal antenna. The resulting metal antenna for RFID tags presents good adhesive strength and low resistivity of 2.58 × 10<sup>−8</sup> Ω·m after 40 min of ELD, and maintains a reliable reading range of RFID tags even after over 1000 times of bending and mechanical stress. Consequently, the developed technology proposed allows for cheap, efficient, and massive production of metal antenna for paper‐based RFID tags with excellent mechanical and electrical properties. Furthermore, this process is especially advantageous for the fabrication of next‐generation flexible electronic devices based on paper substrates.</p>

Abstract:The letter presents the design, fabrication, and measurement of a configurable radio frequency identification (RFID) tag based on time‐domain reflections. The tag circuit contains a microstrip line (ML) that propagates radio frequency (RF) signals, and a group of capacitors that introduce impedance discontinuities to encode binary codes. The configurability of the tag circuit is allowed by connecting the nearby‐placed capacitors with the ML. Ink‐jet printing technology is employed to implement the layout of the proposed tag on paper substrate. To overcome the limitations of printed metallic tracks, a linearly tapering technique is proposed. With this technique, a four‐bit configurable passive chipless RFID tag is realized. Both time‐domain reflectometry (TDR) measurements and ultrawideband (UWB) characterizations were conducted for the proposed tag, and the results are in good consistence with the simulation ones from the circuit simulator advanced design system (ADS). Owing to its low cost fabrication and environmentally friendly nature, the proposed tag has great potential to be widely employed in low‐end RFID applications. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:In this paper meander line antennas with end tip loading, designed for UHF RFID tags are presented. These novel antennas are screen printed on Kapton HN for European frequency band (866-868 MHz) and for North American frequency band (902-928 MHz). Asahi ink is used for screen printing of 25 mu m thick antenna traces which remains conductive even after several times sharp bending of these tag antennas. The results show that the antennas exhibit high performance regarding smaller area, high realized gain and better return loss in the frequency band of interest. These antennas are extremely flexible which give autonomy for their applications.

Abstract:In this paper, inkjet-printed UHF and microwave circuits fabricated on paper substrates are investigated for the first time as an approach that aims for a system-level solution for fast and ultra-low-cost mass production. First, the RF characteristics of the paper substrate are studied by using the microstrip ring resonator in order to characterize the relative permittivity $(\varepsilon_{r})$ and loss tangent $(\tan\delta)$ of the substrate at the UHF band for the first time reported. A UHF RFID tag module is then developed with the inkjet-printing technology, proving this approach could function as an enabling technology for much simpler and faster fabrication on/in paper. Simulation and well-agreed measurement results, which show very good agreement, verify a good performance of the tag module. In addition, the possibility of multilayer RF structures on a paper substrate is explored, and a multilayer patch resonator bandpass filter demonstrates the feasibility of ultra-low-cost 3-D paper-on-paper RF/wireless structures.
