Abstract:'Zheyong 2'is a new mid-maturity muskmelon cultivar. The fruit is nearly spherical. The average fruit weight is about 1.3 kg. The ground color of its pericarp is light green. The fruit net on pericarp is well-distributed,moderate in density and width. The variety belongs to soft-flesh type and its flesh is light yellow green with thickness of 3 cm. The soluble solids content in the center of fruit is usually more than 15%. The fruit yield is about 27 t·hm-2. And this cultivar is resistant to powdery mildew.

Abstract:In order to adjust to the peach structure,extend the supply period and choose suitable varieties for production area in Zhejiang Province,six middle and late maturity honey cultivars,including 'Qingshuibaitao','Qiubaitao','Huangjintao' and 'Xinchuanzhongdaobaitao' introduced from Japan,and other two Chinese cultivars 'Qiuyulu' and 'Xumi' were evaluated,based on their size,mass,firmness,total soluble solids,titratable acid,soluble sugar,organic acid and key aroma components.Two main varieties of yellow-fleshed 'Jinxiuhuangtao' and white-fleshed 'Fenghuayulu' were used as control.Meanwhile,the biological characteristics of each cultivar also were commented during the flowering and fruit development periods.The results showed that 'Huangjintao' was better than 'Jinxiuhuangtao' in flavor qualities,which had the higher soluble solids,total aroma content and lower titration acids,however,the former maybe experience late-frost at the flowering stage.Three white-fleshed cultivars from Japan were better in the fruit mass,total soluble solids / acid ratio and storage character.Especially,the fragrance of 'Qingshuibaitao' was the strongest.Two domestic cultivars 'Xumi' and 'Qiuyulu' had obvious advantages in the fruit mass and storage characteristic compared with the cultivar 'Fenghuayulu',and other flavor qualities had no significant differences.However,'Xumi' was more coarse in texture.

Abstract:‘Magu 1’ is a new jujube cultivar as table fruit which was selected from the mutant among seedling populations of local variety ‘Half red’ at Nancheng county.The fruit is nearly circular with uniform size.The average mass of single fruit is 11.7 g,the largest fruit weight is 17.8 g.The flesh is crisp and sweet flavor,the soluble solids content is 25.0%,vitamin C content is 4.703 mg·g-1,and the edible rate of the fresh fruit reaches to 95.6%,with the superior quality.‘MaGu 1’ is an early maturing variety,the mature fruit growth period is 80 to 85 d,harvesting in the late July in the middle of Jiangxi province.It is a high-and stable-yield cultivar with strong adaptability,resistance,no dehiscent fruit,and high setting percentage.

Abstract:Huamei is a new early-season apple cultivar,which was derived from the cross of Gala×Huashuai,made in 1992. Fruit are short conic in shape,having a thin yellow ground skin covered with bright red blush,weighing 235 g on average. The flesh is medium-fine,crisp and medium juicy,containing a soluble solids content of 12.6%,titratable acidity of 0.26%. The flavor is sweet and a bit tart,of a very good eating quality. Fruit mature in early August in Zhengzhou area. It could be stored under the ambient temperature for 15 days. The trees are vigorous,precocious and very productive,suitable to be grown in the area where the Gala has been planted.

Abstract:'Xiaxiu' is a Rhododendron cultivar derived from the cross of female parent 'Qiuxia' and male parent Rhododendron pulchyrum Sweet. Its flower color is purple red (Red Purple GRoup-N65 A). Its flower is single and its petal has five circular lobes, its upper lobes have some striking dark purple spots.The diameter of flower head is 4.5–5.0 cm. It is characterized by compact plant type, vigour growth, high temperature and high humidity tolerance. It is suitable for greenhouse pot and landscape for the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Its natural florescence is from early-March to mid-March. Its flowering can last 20–25 days.

Abstract:Summary “Zuili”plum(Prunus salicina Lindl)is an ancient Chinese cultivar which has been cultivated in Jiaxing City,Zhejiang Province for over 2 500 years.The plants'high juices and aroma are very popular with consumers. Due to thousands of years of evolution there are numerous cultivars of“Zuili”,which accounts for the heterogeneity in the plants,leading to uneven fruiting performance and fruit quality. This study selected two cultivars,“Zuili 1”and“Zuili 2”.The selected test materials were at different states of maturity with five maturities(H1 H5) being sampled from the“fruit color turning stage”to the“tree ripening stage”.In order to provide references for the industrial application of Zuli production,the study investigated fruit quality traits,ethylene release,the main content of bioactive substances and storage during the plant maturation. The results showed the typical climacteric ripening pattern in both plums,however,maximum production of ethylene at the climacteric peak was harvested at 80 and 100 days after full blossom in“Zuili 1”and“Zuili 2”plums, respectively.Fruit mass,total soluble solids,phenolics,and carotenoids statistically increased,and fruit firmness and acidity decreased in two plums.The highest quality scores being found in harvest 5 which was 4 7 days after the peak of climacteric stage.“Zuili 2”plum could be classified as having the highest quality in terms of sensory attributes,though it had smaller size than“Zuili 1”plum. We conclude that in order to achieve the optimal organoleptic,nutritive and health-beneficial properties of“Zuili”plum,it would be advisable to harvest the fruit at the fully ripe stage.

Abstract:Sugar-accumulating patterns and compositions were compared between two oriental melon varieties, “Huangjingua” (Cucumis melo var. makuwa Makino) and “Yuegua” (Cucumis melo var. conomon Makino). Sucrose and reducing sugars were measured in different mesocarp tissues of developing fruits. They were all characterized by enhanced accumulation of glucose and fructose during early fruit development with almost no sucrose detectable. However, a transition of sucrose enhancement was accompanied by fruit maturing in the variety “Huangjingua”, while no such transition was observed in the variety “Yuegua” that merely had a sucrose content throughout development. In “Huangjingua”, both sucrose and total sugar gradients were observed, ascending from mesocarp adjacent to pedicle, middle part of mesocarp, and up to mesocarp adjacent to umbilicus. However, no obvious gradient in sucrose accumulation was seen among three mesocarp tissues examined. In terms of sweetness index, fructose is the chief contributor to sugar accumulation in both varieties. Also, the melon variety “Huangjingua” could be comparatively considered as a high-sucrose accumulator and “Yuegua” a minor-sucrose accumulator.

Abstract:'Zhizhang Guhong Chongcui' is a new cultivar of Prunus mume with cross-cultivar group characteristics. It has typical characteristics of cinnabar purple cultivar group and green calyx cultivar group. It has green calyx, white flower, and light purple xylem, but the mechanism remains unclear. In order to clarify the causes of its cross-cultivar group traits, the color phenotype, anthocyanin content and the expression levels of genes related to anthocyanin synthesis pathway of 'Zhizhang Guhong Chongcui', 'Yuxi Zhusha' and 'Yuxi Bian Lü'e' were determined. It was found that the red degree of petals, sepals and fresh xylem in branches was positively correlated with the total anthocyanin content. MYBɑ1, MYB1, and bHLH3 were the key transcription factor genes that affected the redness of the three cultivars of flowers and xylem. The transcription factors further promoted the high expression of structural genes F3'H, DFR, ANS and UFGT, thereby promoting the production of red traits. Combined with phenotype, anthocyanin content and qRT-PCR results, it was speculated that the white color of petals of 'Zhizhang Guhong Chongcui' were derived from the high expression of FLS, F3'5'H, LAR and ANR genes in other branches of cyanidin synthesis pathway, and the low expression of GST gene. The green color of sepals might be originated from the relatively low expression of F3'H, DFR and ANS genes. The red color of xylem might be derived from the high expression of ANS and UFGT genes. This study made a preliminary explanation for the characteristics of the cross-cultivar group of 'Zhizhang Guhong Chongcui', and provided a reference for molecular breeding of flower color and xylem color of Prunus mume.

Abstract:‘Zhongli 4' is a new early ripening, big-fruit and high-quality pear cultivar, which is bred by crossing ‘Zaomeisu' and ‘Qiyuesu'. The fruit is globe with green skin and small dense dots. Its average and maximum fruit weight is 300g and 520 g respectively. Its sepals are remnant, fruit core is very small, flesh color is creamy white, flesh texture is fine and crisp, and stone cells are light. Its flesh is juicy with sour-sweet flavor and tastes delicious, soluble solid content is 12.8%,total sugar is 8.37%, titratable acid is 0.12%. Ripening date is at 10 in July in Zhengzhou area. It has a 20-day shelf life,and can be stored under the condition of refrigeration for 1 to 2 months. It is a new ideal cultivar with high fruit quality for the early ripening pear market.

Abstract:Zhonghuayuli was bred by Zhengzhou Fruit Research Institute, CAAS. It was derived from the cross Daxiangshui×Yali, made in 1980. Fruit mature in early October; are ovate in shape; large, weighting 280g on average, but reaching 600g, having a yellow skin. Flesh is fine, tender and crisp, with a soluble solid content of 12%-13.5%, an acid sweet flavor, of very good eating quality. The fruit keeping quality is very good, it could be stored well under natural conditions for 4-6 Months. The trees are precocious, productive and highly resistant to pear scab.

Abstract:Hutian No.1 was a new mid-maturing,high-quality and high-yield muskmelon cultivar by taking L6 as female parent and L26 as male parent.It was bred by Huzhou Agricultural Technology Extension Station,Agriculture and Biotechnology College of Zhejiang University and Huzhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 2011.It was a new muskmelon cultivar with soft flesh and thick peel.The results showed that,under the facility cultivation conditions in spring,its whole growth period was about 132 days,and the fruit growing period was about 45 days,with the average fruit weight of 1.6 kg and the yield of about 1 900-2 000 kg/667 m2.And its fruit was oval,and the fruit shape index of about 1.2.Its peel was green and white with irregular thin fine lines on the fruit surface accidently.The fruit flesh was pale green with the thickness of about 3.8-4.0 cm,and the central soluble solids content was about 15%.The flesh was soft with light fragrance and great taste.Its flowering period was concentrated,and it was easy to bear fruits and was moderately resistant to gummy stem blight and blight.

Abstract:Changes in ethylene production rate, respiration rate, and aroma volatile composition was determined from the immature to mature stage in "Hujingmilu" peach (Prunus presica) fruit. Flesh firmness, fruit size, ground color of skin, and total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA) in juice were analyzed, and ACC, ACC synthase and ACC oxidase activities were measured. With the increase of fruit maturity, fruit size, L* value, and TSS and major reducing sugar contents increased, whereas fruit firmness, skin hue angle (h degrees ), and juice TA and organic acid contents decreased. In immature fruits, a C(6)-aldehydes (trans-2-hexenal) and C(6)-alcohols (cis-3-hexenol) were the major components, corresponding to the low ethylene production and high respiration rates. With increasing of fruit maturity, the C(6)-C(12) lactonic compounds, particularly gamma- and delta-lactones became the dominant volatile constituents, which increased significantly at the climacteric stage. These facts suggest that ethylene production may be involved in the regulation of lactones production in maturing peach fruit. The activity of ACC synthase in the mesocarp declined during the climacteric rise of ethylene. ACC level and ACC oxidase activity in mesocarp were consistent with the onset of ethylene production in fruit. Major aroma volatiles are thought to form in conjunction with the initiation of climacteric rises in respiration and ethylene production. Detection of changes in aroma volatile compound synthesis rate in peach may be useful as index of maturity reflecting the current physiological stage of peach fruit development.

Abstract:Zhongli 1 is also called Lubaoshi. It was derived from the cross Shinseiki(P. pyvifolia Nakai.)×Zaosu(P. bretschneideri Rehd.),made in 1982,bred by Zhengzhou Fruits Research Insititute,CAAS. Fruit mature in mid July in Zhengzhou area,Henan province,are large,weighting 250 g on average,but reaching 510 g,having a green skin and an oblate shape,quite pretty; flesh is fine,tender and crisp,very sweet flavor with slightly tart,of good eating quality. It contains a soluble solids content of 12.2%～14.3%. The fruit shelf life is over 20 days. The trees are precocious,productive and resistant to pear scab disease.
RAPD analysis and comparison of main agronomic characters of Zuili (Prunus salicina Lindl. ) from different provenances

Abstract:The PCR amplification of total genomic DNA from eighteen provenances of Zuili (Prunus salicina Lindl. ) and three outgroups were researched by RAPD marker method, and on this basis, the genetic relationship of eighteen provenances was analyzed by cluster analysis. In addition, the comparative analysis of main agronomic characters of eighteen provenances was also conducted. RAPD analysis result shows that seventy-one bands are amplified with fourteen random primers selected from seventy random primers, in which there are twenty-nine polymorphic bands with a percentage of 40.8%. The cluster analysis result shows that eighteen provenances and three outgroups are divided into seven groups when Euclidean square distance is 0.060, in which each of three outgroups is an independent group, eighteen provenances of Zuili are divided into four groups. Each of two provenances including YXM and HW3 is an independent group, five provenances including HW2, WS, HP1, FB1 and FB2 are clustered in one group, other eleven provenances are clustered in one group. The peel colour of eighteen provenances of Zuili all is red, and the percentages of deep red and dark red each is 50%. According to maturing period of fruit, eighteen provenances of Zuili are approximately divided into early and late maturing type, maturing period is in mid and late June or early and mid July, respectively. By comparison, the early maturing type has some features including higher single fruit weight, lower soluble solid content and earlier flowering stage by 3-4 d. According to comprehensive analysis of RAPD marker and agronomic characters, it is suggested that these provenances of Zuili in Jiaxing area exert mutation and differentiation during cultivation process. YXM provenance has a close relationship with most of eighteen provenances, and also has some excellent features, so YXM is probably an excellent provenance and worth doing further research.

Abstract:Pyrus spp. originated in China, including cultivars that belong to Pyrus pyrifolia, R bretschneideri, R ussuriensis, P sinkiangensis, as a whole are called Asian pear or Chinese pear. Growing of pear has quite a long history in China and has produced many excellent local cultivars. In the early 20th century, a number of Japanese pear cultivars were introduced into some regions of China. Both Chinese pear and Japanese pear have their own strong and weak points. To combine the valuable qualities of both ecotypes, from about the 1950's, cross breeding between them was undertaken in a planned way in China. As a result, the famous 'Huanghua' pear and 'Cuifu' pear came into being in 1974. Beginning in the 1970's, researches carried out in the Zhejiang Agricultural University and some fruit research institutes, through proper combinations of cultivars of different species and ecotypes in their crossing projects and succeeding meticulous selection gave rise to quite a number of prospective new cultivars and strains. They are essentially progenies of hybrids from crossing between Chinese and Japanese pears including 'Xizilu', 'Xinhang', 'Zhaomeisu' and 'Huangguan' which are the most prominent ones among them. Studies indicated that the Japanese pear cultivar 'Twentieth Century' and its progenies as well, has excellent genetic background and is, thus, qualified to be chosen as a valuable partner for crossing with Chinese pear in breeding. Hybridization involving the utilization of the beneficial characteristics of the 'Twentieth Century' and its progenies are considered as a very prospective approach toward improving Chinese pear.
Effect of maturity stage at harvest on quality of ripe Shimizu Hakuto peach (Prunus persica)

Abstract:Fruit of Shimizu Hakuto peach (Prunus persica Batsch.), a melting white flesh cultivar, were harvested at immature(IM), hard-mature(HM), firm-mature(FM), and tree-ripe(TR) stages, corresponding to 6, 4, 2 and 0 days before the TR stage. All fruit except the TR ones were stored at 25 ℃ until full ripeness before comparison of fruit quality. The rate of ethylene production from the intact fruit increased during storage, the highest being from the FM fruit. Skin L* and C* values and juice sucrose and aromatic lactone contents were significantly higher in HM and FM fruit than in IM and TR fruit after storage. Titratable acidity, citric acid, asparagine, and off-flavor volatile contents were the highest in the IM fruit after storage. The analytical data corresponded well with the sensory evaluation scores, suggesting that the FM fruit was most acceptable. The IM fruit was rated as unsavory because of its finn and less fine texture, low sweetness and aromas and high sourness. From these results, we concluded that Shimizu Hakuto peach should be harvested at the FM stage to supply consumers with fruit of the highest quality. The effective parameters for judging the optimum maturity stage for harvest were discussed.
