Abstract:Children's literature, as the name suggests, is a literary work created for children and teenagers, and it plays an important role in their growth process, accompanied by the functions of education, entertainment and cognitive formation. In recent years, China's translation research has been greatly improved, but the research on children's literature translation is still lacking. The translators of children's literature are mostly adults, but the audience is children. Under the guidance of aesthetic theory, the author, from the perspective of children's readers, puts children at the center, aiming to meet their reading needs. so, this paper explores the translation of children's literature on the basis of acceptance aesthetics from the original text-centered to reader-centered, and take the Su Nong's translation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and the original version as an example to explore the vocabulary, rhetoric and translation of magic spells. In terms of rhetoric, the author skillfully uses metaphors, rhymes, and parallelism techniques to make the translation reflect the stylistic style of the original text as much as possible, simultaneously increasing literary talent and bringing pleasant artistic enjoyment to children. This paper aims to popularize different perspectives and interpretations of children's literature translation for the general public, and better enable children to appreciate the aesthetics and charm of Chinese and English texts so that they can grow up healthily and develop comprehensively.

Abstract:It has been 12 years since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the last in the initial series of Harry Potter books was published, and yet the franchise remains very popular, with various films, plays, computer games, theme park rides and websites still being created, and enjoyed, by people all over the globe. All of this has helped feed a large and diverse fanbase whose engagement with the series remains just as strong as it was when the initial book series was first published. It is this fan community that is the focus of Frankel’s edited collection, which covers a wide variety of subjects from the more official expanded sources, such as Erin Pyne’s consideration of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios to the more unofficial fan-created stories, films and online activities, that have allowed the fan community to maintain its loyal base over the years. Similarly, this edited collection also includes interviews with various practitioners in the Harry Potter fan community, with their insights providing useful contextual information which could be useful for future scholars working in this field. Therefore, this edited collection makes a valuable contribution within the growing field of fan studies but it can also be enjoyed by those same fan communities who feature in the text.

Abstract:This paper attempts to unravel how a reader embraces the idea of moral education while enjoying the aesthetic pleasure of the Harry Potter series. It develops a view on moral education through literary experience, which is intrinsically intertwined with aesthetic experience. The amalgamation of reality and fantasy in the Harry Potter novels creates an authenticity that can easily capture the moral attention of a reader by which his/her self-realized valuable emotional intelligence takes place. The well-knit plot encourages reader's self-efficacy ("I" reactive attitude) that triggers the sui-generis, first-personal sense of morality and gradually develops the third-personal "we" attitude. Finally, based on an empirical study, the article explains how the Harry Potter series is productive in building the reader's positive moral psychology through different applications like moral agency, moral point of view, and moral judgment.

Abstract:Film and television works are multimodal discourse composed of a variety of symbol systems such as text, sound and image, so the audience's various senses can be mobilized at the same time when watching movies. Starting from the perspective of multimodal discourse analysis, this paper applies Delu Zhang’s theoretical framework of multimodal discourse analysis to analyze the subtitle translation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone from four aspects: culture, context, content and expression, so as to understand the influence of multimodal on subtitle translation.

Abstract:This article explores sound designs for the five distinct collaborations across the eight Harry Potter films, each of which carved new ways of achieving story cohesion and continuity, and for seeing, hearing, and caring about Harry’s journey. Particularly when we examine the role of animals, we find sound that intermediates between the known and unknown, distilling themes and subtexts, and revealing inner conflicts. I give special attention to the fifth and sixth films (Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince) in which audio elements are sensually integrated, allowing us to understand narratives through feeling and physical sensation rather than prescriptive cueing. Musicalised sound effects introduce underscore; underscore takes over for effects in this powerfully nuanced approach that makes space for viewers to experience—rather than merely witness—how Harry navigates varied spheres and circumstances. Further, this approach makes a critical impact on the emotional arc of the story, significantly deepening viewer experience of Harry’s most transformative personal and emotional moments.
Analysing spells in the Harry Potter series: Sound-symbolic effects of syllable lengths, voiced obstruents and low vowels

Abstract:Abstract The current study is the first to attempt to perform a sound-symbolic analysis of the spells featured in the Harry Potter series. The present research analysed 171 spells in terms of syllable lengths and the number of voiced obstruents and stressed low vowels. The results showed that the Killing Curse, Avada Kedavra , which is known as one of the most powerful and sinister spells, has the most voiced obstruents and stressed low vowels. The study then experimentally examined whether three factors – syllable lengths, voiced obstruents and low vowels – evoked the imagery of powerful spells using nonce words. The results suggested that voiced obstruents and stressed low vowels are sound-symbolically associated with powerful imagery, which aligns with the studies in Pokémonastics concerning strong character names (Kawahara et al. 2018; Shih et al. 2019). Moreover, names containing more syllables were favoured as powerful spells by those who are unfamiliar with the Harry Potter series, which is evidence of the iconicity of quantity in general English speakers.

Abstract:Up to date myths are regarded as universal and enduring for their depicting human’s understanding and knowledge. It presents clues and intimations to Man’s origins of belief and life. Harry Potter, a series of storytelling written by J.K. Rolling, is a metaphoric presentation of myths and cultural background behind each one of them. This study investigates and explores how J.K. Rolling involves in origins of cultural textually while sharing mythological ideas in modern literature as a creative way to give new senses to each of them. With its unique demonstration, Harry Potter places an outstanding position in giving myth a new dimension and ties ancient with present via a new style of mythmaking in modern literature. The study conducts an analytic explanation of the importance of mythmaking to literature in general and specifically in Harry Potter. The findings that the study arrives at are that myths are true replications of cultures and societies, and Rolling's stories make new connection with the depth of human superficiality as well as it renders the possibility to revive mythological mentality in modern era.

Abstract:My recent reading of Su Shi reveals that Su is a master in creating and using magic and alienation stories. Magic and alienation constitute a significant element of Su Shi's literary works and methods of literary creation. Recognizing it will help understand the overall trend of literature of the Song Dynasty, such as popularization of literary themes and substitution of prose for poetry. Magic and alienation exist in Sus literary works of different stages and different genres, endowing the works with a unique sense of beauty and flavor.

Abstract:Visual Communication, Ahead of Print. Existing literature on adaptation studies focuses primarily on analysing film adaptations from an intralingual and monomodal rather than an interlingual and multimodal perspective. To fill this gap, this study addresses the relatively under-researched issue of applying existing literary translation to the subtitles of film adaptations by the film subtitle producers. Concentrating on the Chinese subtitling of neologisms in the Harry Potter films (2001–2011) and by drawing on the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL)-informed multimodal framework, the aim is to investigate how subtitles and other multimodal resources interact to make meanings and their potential effects on the subtitled films when the film subtitle producers apply literary translation to subtitles of film adaptations. The results show that the application of literary translation to subtitled films by the film subtitlers may run the risk of downplaying some crucial elements of the original, such as the relationship between the fictional world and the audience. This study highlights the importance of considering more than just the literary elements when analysing film adaptations and points out broader possible areas, such as multimodality and audiovisual translation, which have only been partly recognized in adaptation studies.

Abstract:This article examines the visitor experience of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (WWOHP) theme park at Universal Studios Orlando. The park is hugely popular and has been embraced by the series’ devoted but critical fanbase. Prior research on theme parks has generally focused on critiques of their form, leading to a limited understanding of their appeal. This article asks how fan-visitors interpret this simulated environment, and what leads them to embrace it. It does this with an ethnographic approach, utilizing in-depth interviews with 15 visitors combined with participant observation. We show how WWOHP is understood by its visitors as an adaptation of the series into physical space, via the medium of the theme park, and how the visitor’s experience is shaped through use of ironic imagination. In doing so, we present a new understanding of the immersive media experience of theme parks.

Abstract:Magic Realism brings fantastic events into the frame of the narration. Yet it cannot quite be defined. At the very start of the process of definition, there is a question: Magic Realism is a mode of narration, or rather a post-colonial movement rising sociological issues alternative to the logic of power? The paper parallels and juxtaposes Latin American Magic Realism and the literary experience of Chinese literary Avant-garde in the 80s, similar apocalyptic thematic, but different narrative structures. Relating to the fictional universe of Can Xue and Yu Hua, the aim is to illuminate an exclusive mode to narrate history: far from being a negotiation of identities in a post-Weberian age, Chinese Avant-garde represents the implosion of Maoist discourse, thus the magic of realism is substituted with the horrifying abyss of a haunted fiction.

Abstract:Based on worldwide popular novels about Harry Potter written by J. K. Rowling, this study provides an original insight into sentiment distribution in the series based on text analysis. It shows what sentiment appears in the book series and how it changes throughout the chapters. Our analysis confirmed that the Harry Potter book series are more negative than positive. It means that 111 chapters out of 200 have a negative sentiment. Another contribution is finding out what the story is about using text analysis. Our findings confirm that an automated approach to book analysis mostly is in accordance with the reader’s impression. Consequently, natural language processing techniques can help infer what each chapter of the book is about. Abstract:In this fMRI study we contrasted emotional responses to literary reading in late bilinguals' first or second language. German participants with adequate English proficiency in their second language (L2) English read short text passages from Harry Potter books characterized by a "negative" or "positive" versus "neutral" emotional valence manipulation. Previous studies have suggested that given sufficient L2 proficiency, neural substrates involved in L1 versus L2 do not differ (Fabbro, 2001). On the other hand, the question of attenuated emotionality of L2 language processing is still an open debate (see Conrad, Recio, & Jacobs, 2011). Our results revealed a set of neural structures involved in the processing of emotion-laden literature, including emotion-related amygdala and a set of lateral prefrontal, anterior temporal, and temporo-parietal regions associated with discourse comprehension, high-level semantic integration, and Theory-of-Mind processing. Yet, consistent with post-scan emotion ratings of text passages, factorial fMRI analyses revealed stronger hemodynamic responses to "happy" than to "neutral" in bilateral amygdala and the left precentral cortex that were restricted to L1 reading. Furthermore, multivariate pattern analyses (MVPA) demonstrated better classifiability of differential patterns of brain activity elicited by passages of different emotional content in L1 than in L2 for the whole brain level. Overall, our results suggest that reading emotion-laden texts in our native language provides a stronger and more differentiated emotional experience than reading in a second language.

Abstract:This is an opportunity to think hard about the rhetorics of multiliteracy and media literacy. What exactly do these mean when we look at the detail, at the 'micro-level' of literacy (Buckingham 2003)? How does a particular image or narrative moment 'translate' across different media? If we expect children to learn about the notion of 'character' in literature or film, what does this mean in the context of a game? If they learn the category of 'verb' in language, how do we talk about this category in film? How is the 'verb' different in the interactive media of computer games? And how do these processes relate to macro-literacy, to the broader cultural experience of books, films and games within which such meanings are situated? And what are these different formal structures representing? At the heart of this question, I want to place the question about the social purpose of Harry Potter for children, and the forms of agency the character represents.

Abstract:The paper is focused on stylistic features of English fantasy texts. The research materials include four fantasy novels written by British and American authors of the late 20th century: Jordan’s The Eye of the World, Martin’s A Game of Thrones, Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The research question of the study lies in need to systematize expressive means and stylistic devices used in the texts and distinguish the common stylistic features of English fantasy texts. To do this, the researchers implement the notion of a stylistic portrait of English fantasy text, and the main aim of the paper is to provide its definition and description. The study employed the complex of linguistic research methods, including analysis and generalization of theoretical sources, contextual analysis and the elements of quantitative analysis of linguistic units used in the texts. Based on three essential aspects of a stylistic portrait, the paper shows that the English fantasy texts are characterized by the dominance of expressive means and stylistic devices at the syntactic level of language. In addition, the researchers identified the most productive stylistically marked linguistic units at each level of language correlated with the semantic field within which they functioned, and studied connotative dominants in these texts.

Abstract:Abstract. This research analyzes the characteristics of magical realism in the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling. This study uses the magical realism theory of Wendy B. Faris. This research aimed to determine the characteristics of magical realism contained in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film. This research method uses the documentation technique. The data source of this research is the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling, which was released in 2016 and with duration 2 hours 3 minutes. The main theory in this study uses the magical realism theory of Wendy B. Faris, which is contained in the book Ordinary Enchantments Magical Realism and the Remystification of Narrative (2004). The results of this research indicate that there are five characteristics of magical realism in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, namely the irreducible element, unsettling doubt, merging realism, disruption of space, and disruption of identity. Abstract:In the age of economic,political and cultural globalization,world literature today does not refer to a set of fixed canons that is usually male-authored and West-centered.More and more excellent literary works by extraordinary female writers and non-Western writers have been included in the anthologies of world literature,thus reforming the framework of world literature.This essay discusses the definition of world literature given by David Damrosch and how the development of a female writing tradition has challenged the traditional canon formation,and then takes J.K.Rowling’s Harry Potter series as an example to relocate the female writing in the atlas of world literature and illustrate female writers’ outstanding contribution to world literature.
