Abstract:Advertisement, a single word is worth a thousand pieces of gold. Therefore, advertising language should not only greatly reflect the characteristics of products, short and to the point and humorous, eye-catching, advertised. Puns are a common rhetorical device in English advertisements. Puns will apply the previously familiar phrases, idioms, proverbs, etc. It not only increases the readability and cultural interest of advertising language but also brings economic benefits to cultural utility, killing two birds with one stone. However, pun translation itself is very complex, and pun translation in advertising is even more difficult. this paper start with the types of puns, expounds on the application skills of puns, and on the basis of considering the double meaning of puns and the style of advertising style, makes a preliminary discussion on the translation of English advertising puns from the aspects of set translation and compensation translation.

Abstract:The article dwells upon cultural specific of pun in Japanese advertisement. Indirect communication strategy which includes word play is an essential part of advertising communication. Pun (word play) is considered to be amusing, humorous use of homophones, however, despite humorous effect and ambiguity of pun, pun is not necessary a joke in advertisement. The study is considered to be relevant due to a distinct role of pun in advertisement. About 28% of Japanese TV advertisement is humorous and 12% contains pun. Game, and language game in particular, are considered to be culturally influenced and play important social role. This influence is reflected in using of precedent-related phenomena, idioms, cultural-specific realia. The paper shows that phonetic puns are used more frequently due to abundance of homophones; graphic transposition is also one of frequent types, but Japanese puns in ads do not use Latin alphabet – this is linked to specific of Japanese writing system and language competence; in order to solve a pun communicative competence is required as a large number of puns are created on the basis of linguocultiral and precedent-related phenomena; among jokes in Japanese ads harmless, nonaggressive are prevail that shows specific of Japanese humor and advertising communication. However transformation of linguistic and social standards may cause communicative fail. The object of this research is pun in Japanese advertisement. The principle aims are to reveal cultural specific of pun. As illustrative material pieces of Japanese advertisement and TV commercials were selected via Internet – all of them were published in 2014-2020.

Abstract:The language of advertising is unique and very peculiar in comparison with other properties of media discourse. The effectiveness of speech in advertising media discourse focuses on attracting the target audience. Since the language of advertising is characterized by distinguished persuasive function, the creators of ads spare no effort to make them catchy, interesting and witty. This is the reason why various linguistic devices are used to facilitate the comprehension and memorization of advertisements. In this regard, a significant role is performed by wordplay, as the intentional usage of puns ensures the effectiveness of the composed texts.

Abstract:In situation comedies, pun is one of the most effective means of creating comic effect and takes up a considerable part. However, if incorrectly or improperly translated, it can be almost impossible for puns to get across its audience, even when the audience is somewhat capable of English. The reason is that pun, in essence, is a figure of speech, which requires certain knowledge of English literature and culture. The translation of English movies and TV series has become fairly sophisticated, but studies on the translation of pun are relatively rare. This article will introduce and study pun both in Chinese and English literature by the approach of contrast, and discuss the translation methods of puns from the perspective of functional equivalence theory; and then it will take the Chinese subtitle of the famous situation comedy series Yes, Minister as examples to analyze and study the translation methods and strategies of puns used in situation comedies.

Pun processing in advertising posters: evidence from eye tracking

Abstract:This study examines the process of reading polycode advertising posters, focusing in particular on the effect of a pun in the headline. The pun, or a sequence of lexical items that can be perceived as ambiguous, is contained in the headline and different meanings of this sequence are supported by the picture and text. The results of the preliminary experiment showed that advertisements with puns are rated as more attractive, original, effective and positive compared to advertisements without puns. We hypothesized that puns in the headlines increase cognitive effort in processing posters, leading to higher evaluations. The main experiment tested this and examined differences in eye movement when reading posters with and without puns. Fifty-five Russian participants viewed advertisements while their eye movements were recorded. Our results showed no fundamental differences in the general pattern of viewing advertisement posters with and without puns. We found that readers start to perceive polycode advertisements from the text and spend more time reading the text than looking at an image. These findings shed light on how attention is distributed between verbal and non-verbal components of polycode texts, and which type of poster is more effective for information retrieval at different processing levels.

Abstract:Contrastive Studies of Pun in Figures of Speech. Pun as a figure of speech uses a word or phrase to get two meanings: literal meaning and connotation meaning so as to achieve humorous or sarcastic sense. There are many similarities between English and Chinese but in many ways they are different, while people always subconsciously consider them as equal and use them in any occasions. To solve these problems, this thesis solves them through the contrastive study of English and Chinese rhetorical figure-pun. By analyzing and comparing English and Chinese puns in some typical sentences and dialogues through semantic, pragmatic, cultural perspectives, partial tone, forms, meanings and so on. This thesis show that pun between English and Chinese exists lots of similarities and differences from different perspectives. Through all the endeavors done in this thesis, a better understanding of both languages and cultures, and smoother translation would be obtained. Whats more, people can use puns in English and Chinese languages properly so as to eliminate unnecessary misunderstandings when communicating with others.

Abstract:Code-switching is a practice governed by certain syntactic rules and necessitated by pragmatic demands. People have already gained much insight into code-switching and its application in advertising in bilingual communities. This paper examined the characteristics of code-switching in advertisements published in mainland China's media and its impact on advertising effectiveness. Code-switching in mainland China's advertisements mainly falls into two types: phonological code-switching and popular word code-switching. These types of code-switching can result in greater advertising persuasiveness mainly by conveying more information than non-switched equivalent advertisements and by improving individuals' quality expectations of the products or services advertised.

Abstract:Humor plays an important role in human languages and it is essential to model humor when building intelligence systems. Among different forms of humor, puns perform wordplay for humorous effects by employing words with double entendre and high phonetic similarity. However, identifying and modeling puns are challenging as puns usually involved implicit semantic or phonological tricks. In this paper, we propose Pronunciation-attentive Contextualized Pun Recognition (PCPR) to perceive human humor, detect if a sentence contains puns and locate them in the sentence. PCPR derives contextualized representation for each word in a sentence by capturing the association between the surrounding context and its corresponding phonetic symbols. Extensive experiments are conducted on two benchmark datasets. Results demonstrate that the proposed approach significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in pun detection and location tasks. In-depth analyses verify the effectiveness and robustness of PCPR.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the task of generating a pun sentence given a pair of word senses. A major challenge for pun generation is the lack of large-scale pun corpus to guide the supervised learning. To remedy this, we propose an adversarial generative network for pun generation (Pun-GAN), which does not require any pun corpus. It consists of a generator to produce pun sentences, and a discriminator to distinguish between the generated pun sentences and the real sentences with specific word senses. The output of the discriminator is then used as a reward to train the generator via reinforcement learning, encouraging it to produce pun sentences that can support two word senses simultaneously. Experiments show that the proposed Pun-GAN can generate sentences that are more ambiguous and diverse in both automatic and human evaluation.
On the Study of Chinese Puns in English Translation from a Rhetorical Perspective: A Case Study on Xi You Ji and its Two English Translations

Abstract:From a rhetorical perspective, the article takes the puns in Xi You Ji (Journey to the West) and its two English translations as the object of study and divides the puns into three categories: homonymy, homophony, and paronomasia puns respectively. The two translations deal with the three types of puns in very different ways. Yu’s translation deals with the puns in the original by the strategy of direct translation or phonetic translation with annotations, which largely compensates for the lack of puns when they are transformed in a foreign context. While Jenner’s translation mostly adopts the direct translation strategy, and only a few puns have been translated with annotations. The translations of the typical puns in the original text are comparable between the two translations, and both of them try to achieve phonetic, meaning, and morphological equivalence with the original text. However, from an overall perspective, the richness of translation and compensation in Jenner’s translation is much inferior to those in Yu’s translation.

Abstract:The main purpose of this study is to analyse what translation strategies can be used for rendering puns and cultural references, from English into Swedish, found in a text that humorously presents stereotypically British phenomena. The study also aims to determine whether the strategies are mainly source-oriented or target-oriented and to point out some similarities and differences between the translation strategies used for puns and cultural references. In order to solve the different problems that the puns and cultural references caused, various thesauruses, dictionaries, encyclopaedias and parallel texts have been consulted. The analysis of puns has been based on translation strategies presented by Delabastita (1996) and the analysis of cultural references on strategies presented by Pedersen (2007). Even if there proved to be some overlaps between Delabastita ́s and Pedersen ́s sets of strategies, the study confirms that puns and cultural references require quite different approaches and quite different strategies. The chosen approach for rendering puns was relatively free and target-oriented. The source text puns were predominantly rendered by replacing them with target text puns, even if this changed the text significantly. The cultural references, on the other hand, were mainly rendered by using source-oriented strategies. Retention and strategies that include or have been combined with Retention were the most frequently used ones.

Abstract:The research paper explores the concept of pun therapy as a linguistic and educational tool in teaching students specializing in linguistics. The study aims to describe the multifunctional nature of pun therapy in linguistic education and to propose materials for studying pun in translation courses. The researchidentifies various applications of pun in linguistic education including pun as linguistic studies (examining lexico-semantic and syntactic means of pun creation: such as homonymy, paronymy, polysemy, syllable regrouping, etc.), pun and its translation (distinguishing between translatable and untranslatable pun, and exploring compensatory methods for translating untranslatable pun), pun in literature and advertising, pun as relaxation, wordplay as a method for pronunciation correction, pun as a means of self-presentation.Pun therapy is represented as a type of wordplay therapy or verbal humour therapy with significant linguistic and educational potential. It contributes to motivation for studies, creates a positive emotional atmosphere in communication and interaction between a teacher and students. The research draws ontheoretical issues related to humour and laughter as therapy, humour in education, and practical resources, such as books containing puns which can be used in teaching and studying pun for students of linguistic specialities. The methods employed in the study include lexico-semantic analysis of pun creation and functional analysis of pun in teaching. The study emphasizes the beneficial influence of pun in both teaching and learning contexts.

Abstract:We tackle the problem of generating a pun sentence given a pair of homophones (e.g., "died" and "dyed"). Supervised text generation is inappropriate due to the lack of a large corpus of puns, and even if such a corpus existed, mimicry is at odds with generating novel content. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised approach to pun generation using a corpus of unhumorous text and what we call the local-global surprisal principle: we posit that in a pun sentence, there is a strong association between the pun word (e.g., "dyed") and the distant context, as well as a strong association between the alternative word (e.g., "died") and the immediate context. This contrast creates surprise and thus humor. We instantiate this principle for pun generation in two ways: (i) as a measure based on the ratio of probabilities under a language model, and (ii) a retrieve-and-edit approach based on words suggested by a skip-gram model. Human evaluation shows that our retrieve-and-edit approach generates puns successfully 31% of the time, tripling the success rate of a neural generation baseline.
