Abstract:Poly(l-pentyne)s containing biphenyl and phthalimido pendant groups with different spacer lengths {P1(m); -[HC=C(CH2)(3)O-Biph-OCO(CH2)(m)N(CO)(2)C6H4](n)-, Biph=4,4'-biphenylyl; m = 7, 10} are synthesized in satisfactory yields by WCl6-Ph4Sn catalyst in toluene at elevated temperatures. The structures and properties of the polymers are characterized and evaluated by IR, NMR, TGA, DSC, POM, and XRD analyses. Both of the polymers are thermally stable (T-d greater than or less than 300 degrees C) and exhibit nematicity at high temperatures. Their phthalimido groups are converted into amino groups by hydrolysis, which can, after acidification, complex with lead(II) bromide to furnish polyacetylene-perovskite hybrids in high yields. The organic components contribute good solubility to the hybrids, while the perovskite framework induces the polyacetylene chains to align within the inorganic sheets. The hybrids emit a strong UV light of 374 nm upon photoexcitation, whose quantum yield increases with an increase in the spacer length. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:A novel hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene/oligothiophene hybrid is shown to self-assemble into a hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline phase, and respond to applied electric fields resulting in uniform homeotropic or parallel alignment depending upon the electrode structure. Furthermore, the columnar orientation can be maintained even after removal of the electric field unless the material is heated above the clearing temperature.

Abstract:Using atomistic molecular dynamics simulation we study the discotic columnar liquid crystalline (LC) phases formed by a new organic compound having Hexa-peri-Hexabenzocoronene (HBC) core with six pendant oligothiophene units recently synthesized by Nan Hu et al. (N. Hu, R. Shao, Y. Shen, D. Chen, N. A. Clark and D. M. Walba, Adv. Mater. 26, 2066, 2014). This HBC core based LC phase was shown to have electric field responsive behavior and has important application in organic electronics. Our simulation results confirm the hexagonal arrangement of columnar LC phase with a lattice spacing consistent with that obtained from small angle X-ray diffraction data. We have also calculated various positional and orientational correlation functions to characterize the ordering of the molecules in the columnar arrangement. The molecules in a column are arranged with an average twist of 25 degrees having an average inter-molecular separation of ~5 Å. Interestingly, we find an overall tilt angle of 43 degrees between the columnar axis and HBC core. We also simulate the charge transport through this columnar phase and report the numerical value of charge carrier mobility for this liquid crystal phase. The charge carrier mobility is strongly influenced by the twist angle and average spacing of the molecules in the column.

Abstract:Hexakis (4-iodophenyl)-peri-hexabenzocoronene (5), a novel functionalizable mesogenic building block, was prepared by rational multistep synthesis. Although sparingly soluble in common solvents, it can be obtained in pure form and then functionalized via Hagihara-Sonogashira coupling to give a series of highly ordered columnar liquid crystalline molecules 14a-c. The total synthesis involves five 6-fold transformations, all in excellent to near quantitative isolated yields. Their thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXID). Compared to the normal alkyl-subsituted hexabenzocoronenes (HBCs), 14a-c exhibit more highly ordered columnar mesophases, including three-dimensionally ordered superstructures (helical columnar mesophase). These could arise from additional intracolumnar,7-,7 interactions between, and space-filling requirements introduced by, the rigid-rod side groups. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed self-assembled bundles of columnar aggregates in spin-coated films and isolated several micron-long nanoribbons composed of a defined number of columns in drop cast films.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are of technological interest as they allow for optical effects which can be electrically controlled. In this paper we present an electro-optical device consisting of nematic liquid crystals addressed by an electrode structure consisting of thin films of polymer wrapped single walled carbon nanotubes (nanohybrids). Thin films of nanohybrids display excellent optical transmission and electrical conduction properties. Due to the randomly organised nanohybrids these composite films produce interesting director profile arrangements within the liquid crystal layers. As a result, enhanced scattering of laser and white light was observed from these liquid crystal cells which bend themselves as electrically controllable optical diffusers and beam shapers.

Abstract:The incorporation of large pi-conjugated ligands into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can introduce intriguing photophysical and electrochemical properties into the framework. However, these effects are often hindered by the strong pi-pi interaction and the low solubility of the arylated ligands. Herein, we report the synthesis of a porous zirconium-based MOF, Zr-6(mu(3)-O)(4)(mu(3)-OH)(4)(OH)(6)(H2O)(6)(HCHC) (PCN-136, HCHC = hexakis(4-carboxyphenyl)hexabenzocoronene), which is composed of a hexacarboxylate linker with a pi-conjugated hexabenzocoronene moiety. Direct assembly of the Zr4+ metal centers and the HCHC ligands was unsuccessful due to the low solubility and the unfavorable conformation of the arylated HCHC ligand. Therefore, PCN-136 was obtained from aromatization-driven postsynthetic annulation of the hexaphenylbenzene fragment in a preformed framework (pbz-MOF-1) to avoid pi-pi stacking. This postsynthetic modification was done through a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation and was clearly observable utilizing single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The formation of large pi-conjugated systems on the organic linker dramatically enhanced the photoresponsive properties of PCN-136. With isolated hexabenzocoronene moieties as photosensitizers and Zr-oxo clusters as catalytic sites, PCN-136 was employed as an inherent photocatalytic system for CO2 reduction under visible-light irradiation, which showed increased activity compared with pbz-MOF-1.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of a longitudinally helical molecular nanocarbon, hexabenzoheptacene (HBH), along with its dimethylated derivative (HBH-Me), which are composed of six benzene rings periodically benzannulated to both zigzag edges of a heptacene core. This benzannulation pattern endows the resulting nanocarbons with a helical heptacene core and local aromaticity, imparting enhanced solubility and stability to the system. The chiral HBH-Me adopts a more highly twisted conformation with an end-to-end twist angle of 95°, enabling the separation of the enantiomers. Both HBH and HBH-Me can be facilely oxidized into their corresponding dications, which exhibit enhanced planarity and aromaticity upon loss of electrons. Notably, both longitudinally helical nanocarbons readily promote solid state packing into two-dimensional (2D) arrangement. Single-crystal microbelts of HBH-Me show hole mobility up to 0.62 cm2 V-1 s-1, illustrating the promising potential of these longitudinally helical molecules for organic electronic devices.

Abstract:A series of novel perylene tetra sec-alkyl ester compounds were successfully designed and synthesised. The photophysical properties were investigated and the UV absorption and fluorescence emission spectra displayed a mirror-image relationship. The compound PS8 showed the highest fluorescent quantum yield, while the fluorescence of PS8 was quenched in the aggregated state in mixed solvents. Moreover, the electrochemical properties of the perylene derivatives were studied to determine the molecules' highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels by cyclic voltammetry. The most important result was that PS8 exhibited a columnar phase at room temperature and was responsive to an electric field. PS8 could perpendicularly orient to an applied electric field. In addition, highly oriented face-on alignment was achieved on indium tin oxide-covered glass by thermal annealing.

Abstract:Five different kinds of monofunctionalized hexa‐peri‐hexabenzocoronenes (HBCs) are synthesized by loading dialkyl‐diphenylacetylenes and asymmetric diphenylacetylene derivatives at the same time. This method shortens the synthetic route by half, with four fewer steps compared with the commonly used approach. In addition, this method is more economic and environmentally friendly. The self‐assembling properties of the molecules are greatly influenced by the substituted alkyl side chains. From the short linear hexyl chain (C6) to the longer n‐dodecyl (C12) chain and then to the branched alkyl chain (C10,6), the transition temperature from the crystalline phase to the liquid crystalline (LC) phase and that from the LC phase to the isotropic (Iso) state both decrease. Furthermore, the ester group far away from the aromatic core and its length are also important variables to control the phase behaviors of the molecules. The typical long‐range ordered hexagonal lattice (Colh phase) is found for all the monofunctionalized molecules in their LC states.

Abstract:<p>First examples of multichain (polycatenar) compounds, based on the π‐conjugated [1]benzothieno[3,2‐<i>b</i>]benzothiophene unit are designed, synthesized, and their soft self‐assembly and charge carrier mobility are investigated. These compounds, terminated by the new fan‐shaped 2‐brominated 3,4,5‐trialkoxybenzoate moiety, form bicontinuous cubic liquid crystalline (LC) phases with helical network structure over extremely wide temperature ranges (>200 K), including ambient temperature. Compounds with short chains show an achiral cubic phase with the double network, which upon increasing the chain length, is at first replaced by a tetragonal 3D phase and then by a mirror symmetry is broken triple network cubic phase. In the networks, the capability of bypassing defects provides enhanced charge carrier mobility compared to imperfectly aligned columnar phases, and the charge transportation is non‐dispersive, as only rarely observed for LC materials. At the transition to a semicrystalline helical network phase, the conductivity is further enhanced by almost one order of magnitude. In addition, a mirror symmetry broken isotropic liquid phase is formed beside the 3D phases, which upon chain elongation is removed and replaced by a hexagonal columnar LC phase.</p>
