Abstract:The matrix isolation infrared spectroscopic and quantum chemical calculation results indicate that late transition metal monoxides CrO through NiO coordinate one noble gas atom in forming the NgMO complexes (Ng = Ar, Kr, Xe; M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) in solid noble gas matrixes. Hence, the late transition metal monoxides previously characterized in solid noble gas matrixes should be regarded as the NgMO complexes, which were predicted to be linear. The M-Ng bond distances decrease, while the M-Ng binding energies increase from NgCrO to NgNiO. In contrast, the early transition metal monoxides, ScO, TiO, and VO, are not able to form similar noble gas atom complexes.

Abstract:Copper and silver chloride–nitrous oxide complexes: ClCuNNO and ClAgNNO have been produced and trapped in solid argon by co-deposition of laser-evaporated metal chlorides with nitrous oxide in excess argon. On the basis of isotopic substituted experiments as well as theoretical calculations, infrared absorptions at 2305.8 and 1318.4cm−1, and 2291.2 and 1325.4cm−1 are assigned to the N–N and N–O stretching modes of the linear ClCuNNO and ClAgNNO complexes, respectively. The binding energies for the complexes with respect to MCl (M=Cu, Ag) and N2O were computationally estimated to be 27.9 and 13.1kcal/mol.

Abstract:The ClCuNN, BrCuNN, and ClNiNN molecules have been prepared and isolated in solid argon by co-condensation of the species generated from 1064 nm laser ablation of copper or nickel halides with N-2/Ar gas mixtures. On the basis of isotopic substituted experiments and density functional theory calculations, infrared absorptions at 2296.3, 2297.8, and 2246.3 cm(-1) are assigned to the N-N stretching vibrations of the linear molecules, ClCuNN, BrCuNN, and ClNiNN in solid argon, respectively. The binding energies for ClCuNN, BrCuNN, and ClNiNN with respect to MX (M=Cu, Ni, X=Cl, Br) and N-2 were computationally estimated to be 20.4, 18.7, and 18.9 kcal/mol, respectively.

Abstract:Binary nickel, palladium, and platinum nitrous oxide complexes Ni(NNO)x, Pd(NNO)x (x = 1, 2), and PtNNO have been produced by the reactions of laser-evaporated metal atoms with nitrous oxide in solid argon. The complexes were identified on the basis of isotopically substituted infrared absorptions as well as theoretical frequency calculations. These complexes were characterized to have structures with the terminal N atom of N(2)O bound to the metal atoms. The MNNO complexes are photosensitive and rearrange to OMNN or MO + N(2) upon ultraviolet-visible irradiation.

Abstract:Dichromium oxide clusters, Cr2O2, Cr2O4, and Cr2O6, have been prepared and characterized by matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. Laser-evaporated chromium atoms reacted with O-2 in solid argon to form the previously characterized CrO2 molecules, which further reacted with chromium atoms to form Cr2O2 spontaneously on annealing. The Cr2O2 cluster is determined to have a chainlike CrOCrO structure. The rhombic ring isomer, which was predicted to be more stable than the CrOCrO structure, was not formed at the present experimental conditions. The Cr2O4 cluster was formed from the barrierless dimerization of the chromium dioxide molecules, which is characterized to have a planar D-2h symmetry. The Cr2O6 cluster was produced under UV light irradiation. It is determined to have a singlet ground state with a nonplanar D-2h symmetry.

Abstract:The reactions of manganese and iron monoxides (MnO and FeO) with methane molecules have been investigated using matrix isolation infrared absorption spectroscopy. The metal monoxide molecules were prepared by laser ablation of MnO2 or Fe2O3 targets. The reaction products were identified on the basis of isotopic substitution experiments with (CH4)-C-13 and CD4, as well as density functional theoretical calculations. In solid argon, manganese and iron monoxides reacted with methane spontaneously on annealing to form the OMn(CH4) and OFe(CH4) complexes, which were predicted to have C-2v symmetry with the metal atom coordinated to two hydrogen atoms of the methane molecule. The OMn(CH4) and OFe(CH4) complexes underwent photochemical rearrangement to the CH3MnOH and CH3FeOH molecules upon ultraviolet irradiation.

Abstract:The reactions of transition metal dioxides (MnO2 and FeO2) with acetylene molecules have been studied using matrix isolation infrared absorption spectroscopy. The metal dioxide molecules were prepared by the reactions of laser-ablated metal atoms with dioxygen. In solid argon, the MnO2 and FeO2 molecules reacted with C2H2 to form the (eta(2)-C2H2)MnO2 and (eta(2)-C2H2)FeO2 complexes spontaneously on annealing. Both complexes were predicted to have low-spin ground states ((1)A(1) for (eta(2) -C2H2)FeO2, (2)A, for (eta(2)-C2H2)MnO2) with C-2nu symmetry. In addition, evidence is also presented for the formation of Mn(H)CCO and Fe(H)CCO molecules upon UV-visible irradiation. The product absorptions were identified by isotopic substitution as well as density functional calculations of isotopic frequencies.

Abstract:Reactions of rhodium atoms with dioxygen molecules in solid argon have been investigated using matrix isolation infrared absorption spectroscopy. The rhodium-dioxygen complexes, Rh(eta2-O2), Rh(eta2-O2)2, and Rh(eta2-O2)2(eta1-OO), are produced spontaneously on annealing. The Rh(eta2-O2) complex rearranges to the inserted RhO2 molecule under visible light irradiation. Experiments doped with xenon in argon show that the rhodium-dioxygen complexes are coordinated by one or two noble gas atoms in solid noble gas matrixes. Hence, the Rh(eta2-O2), Rh(eta2-O2)2, and Rh(eta2-O2)2(eta1-OO) molecules trapped in solid noble gas matrixes should be regarded as the Rh(eta2-O2)(Ng)2, Rh(eta2-O2)2(Ng)2, and Rh(eta2-O2)2(eta1-OO)(Ng) (Ng = Ar or Xe) complexes. The product absorptions are identified on the basis of isotopic substitution and density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:The nickel, copper, and silver metal carbonyl chloride molecules have been prepared and isolated in solid argon by cocondensation of the species generated from 1064 nm laser ablation of metal chlorides with carbon monoxide in excess argon at II K. On the basis of isotopic substitution experiments and density functional theory frequency calculations, infrared absorptions at 2118.7 2156.8, and 2184.0 cm(-1) are assigned to the C-O stretching vibrations of the Ni(CO)Cl, Cu(CO)Cl, and Ag(CO)Cl molecules. Density functional calculations predicted that the M(CO)Cl (M = Ni, Cu, Ag) molecules are linear; the binding energies with respect to MCl + CO were estimated to be 37.1, 34.2, and 17.8 kcal/mol, respectively. In addition, evidence is also presented for the M(CO)Cl-2, M(CO)(2)Cl, and M(CO)(2)Cl-2 (M = Ni, Cu) molecules.

Abstract:In this review, we summarize our recent results on matrix isolation infrared spectroscopic studies and theoretical investigations of noble gas-transition metal oxide complexes. The results show that some transition metal oxide species trapped in solid noble gas matrices are chemically coordinated by one or multiple noble gas atoms forming noble gas complexes and, hence, cannot be regarded as isolated species. Noble gas coordination alters the vibrational frequencies as well as the geometric and electronic structures of transition metal oxide species trapped in solid noble gas matrixes. The interactions between noble gas atoms and transition metal oxides involve ion-induced dipole interactions as well as chemical bonding interactions. Periodic trends in the bonding in these noble gas-transition metal complexes are discussed.

Abstract:The aluminum, gallium and indium borates have been produced by co-deposition of metal and boron atoms with oxygen molecules in excess argon at low temperature. The metal borate molecules were identified on the basis of the experimentally observed vibrations with isotopic effects (16O/18O substitutions, and 10B/11B and 69Ga/71Ga in natural abundance) as well as density functional calculations. The aluminum, gallium and indium borates were predicted to have linear geometries with a highly ionic electronic structure.

Abstract:The reactions of niobium and tantalum monoxides and dioxides with methane have been investigated using matrix isolation infrared spectroscopic and theoretical calculations. The niobium and tantalum oxide molecules were prepared by laser evaporation of Nb(2)O(5) and Ta(2)O(5) bulk targets. The niobium monoxide molecule interacted with methane to form the ONb(CH(4)) complex, which was predicted to have C(3)(v)() symmetry with the metal atom coordinated to three hydrogen atoms of the methane molecule. The ONb(CH(4)) complex rearranged to the CH(3)Nb(O)H isomer upon 300 nm < lambda < 580 nm irradiation. The analogous OTa(CH(4)) complex was not observed, but the CH(3)Ta(O)H molecule was produced upon UV irradiation. The niobium and tantalum dioxide molecules reacted with methane to form the O(2)Nb(CH(4)) and O(2)Ta(CH(4)) complexes with C(s)() symmetry, which underwent photochemical rearrangement to the CH(3)Nb(O)OH and CH(3)Ta(O)OH isomers upon ultraviolet irradiation.

Abstract:The transition metal dioxide–ethylene complexes (η2-C2H4)MnO2 and (η2-C2H4)FeO2 have been prepared by the reactions of transition metal dioxide molecules (MnO2 and FeO2) with ethylene in solid argon The metal dioxide molecules were prepared by the reactions of laser-ablated metal atoms with dioxygen. The (η2-C2H4)MnO2 and (η2-C2H4)FeO2 complexes were characterized by matrix isolation infrared absorption spectroscopy as well as density functional calculations. Both complexes were predicted to have low spin ground states, having C2v symmetry with the MC2 plane perpendicular to the MO2 plane.

Abstract:The reactions of silver and gold atoms with carbon disulfide in solid argon have been investigated with infrared absorption spectroscopy. The ground state silver and gold atoms reacted with carbon disulfide to form the sulfur-bonded Ag-η1–SCS and Au-η1–SCS complexes spontaneously on annealing. The Ag-η1–SCS and Au-η1–SCS complexes underwent photochemical rearrangement to the inserted SAgCS and SAuCS molecules upon ultraviolet–visible irradiation. The product molecules were identified based on isotopic IR spectra and density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:Two CF2O⋯IF complexes have been found during laser photolysis of CF3I/O2 in Ar and Xe matrices. The geometries and fundamental vibrational frequencies of two complexes CF2O⋯IF (A) and CF2⋯IF(B) have been determined by ab initio calculations at MP2 level with the LANL2DZ basis set. The calculated potential energies indicate that the complex(B) is more stable than the complex(A) by 23kJ/mol. The frequencies and stability are in agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:The ClCu (η 2-O 2) and ClCuNN complexes have been isolated by codeposition of laser ablated CuCl 2 or CuCl targets with O 2/Ar or N 2/Ar mixtures at 11K. Based on isotopic substituted experiments and DFT calculations, infrared absorptions at 1175.0cm -1 and 2296.3cm -1 are assigned to O-O stretching mode of ClCu (η 2-O 2) and N-N stretching mode of ClCuNN, respectively . Theoretical calculations predicted ClCu(η 2-O 2) to be of C 2v, symmetry with a 3B 1 ground state, and its dissociation energy with respect to CuCl + O 2 is estimated to be 52.3kJ/mol. For ClCuNN, it was found to be a linear molecule with a 1∑ + ground state, and its dissociation energy is 85.3kJ/mol with respect to CuCl and N 2.
