Abstract:In China, the rapid development greatly greatly promotes the national economic power and living standard but also inevitably brings a series of environmental problems. In order to resolve these problems fundamentally, Chinese scientists have been undertaking research in the area of green chemical engineering (GCE) for many years and achieved great progresses. In this paper, we reviewed the research progresses related to GCE in China and screened four typical topics related to the Chinese and screened four typical topics related to the Chinese resources characteristics and environmental requirements, i.e. ionic liquids and their applications, biomass utilization and bio-based materials/products, green solvent-mediated extraction technologies, and cold plas-mas for coal conversion. Afterwards, the perspectives and development tendencies of GCE were proposed, and the challenges which will be faced while developing available industrial technologies in China were mentioned.

Abstract:The green chemistry revolution is providing an enormous number of challenges to those who practice chemistry in industry, education and research. With these challenges however, there are an equal number of opportunities to discover and apply new chemistry, to improve the economics of chemical manufacturing and to enhance the much-tarnished image of chemistry. In this article which is based on his Inaugural Lecture at the University of York in 1998, Professor Clark reviews some of the challenges, considers some of the new and successful “greener” chemistry in practice and uses two areas of chemistry to examine the scale and diversity of current problems and the exciting opportunities for innovative chemistry research and application.

1 Introduction to Clean Technology and Catalysis

Abstract:Traditional chemical manufacturing is resource demanding and wasteful, and often involves the use of hazardous substances. Resources are used throughout the production and including the treatment of waste streams and emissions (Figure 1.1). Green chemistry focuses on resource efficiency and on the design of chemical products and processes that are more environmentally benign. If green chemistry is used in a process, it should be made simpler, the inputs and outputs should be safer and more sustainable, the energy consumption should be reduced and costs should be reduced as yields increase, and so separations become simpler and less waste is generated [1]. Green chemistry moves the trend toward new, clean technologies such as flow reactors and microwave reactors, as well as clean synthesis. For instance, lower temperature, shorter reaction time, choice of an alternative route, increased yield, or using fewer washings at workup improve the ‘‘cleanness’’ of a reaction by saving energy and process time and reducing waste [2]. At present, there is more emphasis on the use of renewable feedstocks [3] and on the design of safer products including an increasing trend for recovering resources or ‘‘closed-loop manufacturing.’’ Green chemistry research and application now encompass the use of biomass as a source of organic carbon and the design of new greener products, for example, to replace the existing products that are unacceptable in the light of new legislation (e.g., REACH) or consumer perception. Green chemistry can be seen as a tool by which sustainable development can be achieved: the application of green chemistry is relevant to social, environmental, and economic aspects. To achieve sustainable development will require action by the international community, national governments, commercial and noncommercial organizations, and individual action by citizens from a wide variety of disciplines. Acknowledgment of sustainable development has been taken forward into policy by many governments including most world powers notably in Europe [4], China [5], and the United States [6].

Abstract:In this review we will highlight some of the science that exemplifies the principles of Green Chemistry, in particular the efficient use of materials and energy, development of renewable resources, and design for reduced hazard. Examples are drawn from a diverse range of research fields including catalysis, alternative solvents, analytical chemistry, polymer science, and toxicology. While it is impossible for us to be comprehensive, as the worldwide proliferation of Green Chemistry research, industrial application, conferences, networks, and journals has led to a wealth of innovation, the review will attempt to illustrate how progress has been made toward solving the sustainability goals of the 21st century by engaging at the molecular level.

Development of teaching material for green and sustainable chemistry in Japan

Abstract:Abstract This study first developed content for a series of textbooks on green and sustainable chemistry (hereinafter referred to as GSC) targeted for university use. The textbooks focus on technology and products that have been awarded prizes in recognition of their contribution and performance toward GSC promotion. We also supplemented the textbooks with a video teaching material on dyeing systems that do not use water. We then surveyed aspiring secondary school teachers about the developed teaching materials using the questionnaire method. The results from university students’ questionnaires showed that 82% understood the importance of GSC and were interested in the subject. Second, we developed a series of leaflets on GSC targeted for use in upper secondary schools. Specifically, the content emphasizes the relationship between high school chemistry textbooks and daily life, other subjects, society, and the global environment. The results showed that approximately 60% of the senior high school students’ first impression of the leaflet was “interesting.” Twenty years after GSC has been defined, it has still not become completely pervasive in Japan. In the future, it will be necessary to foster instructors capable of teaching GSC in secondary education.

Abstract:Mankind has just begun to recognize that the most crucial factor to achieve the sustainable society in the future is green technology. Most countries support the development of green technology to prevent catastrophes from global warming, mainly in the areas of reducing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. However, most products we consume in everyday life are produced through chemical processes, and we often oversee the fact that the huge amount of waste and energy during these chemical processes will seriously influence our goal to achieve our future society sustainable. Thus the technologies to minimize the amount of disposed waste and energy consumption during chemical processes may be more important than to reduce the greenhouse gases. In this regard this review introduces the recent status of green chemistry and future prospects in order to help our chemists and engineers establish research projects based on the green chemistry principles.

Abstract:Chemists use atoms as the building blocks in reactions to design new molecules for materials, medicines, and much more. However, the chemical elements on our planet are a finite resource, so we need to prevent them from running out or being wasted. How do chemists do this? The principles of Green Chemistry guide chemists, helping them to design new products both efficiently and safely, while limiting or preventing pollution along the way. Scientists consider them through every step of creating a new product—from early experiments in the laboratory, all the way up to large-scale industrial production. Chemists can compare the materials and processes used to create their products using a Life Cycle Assessment, which can calculate factors such as water, energy, and resource inputs as well as production of pollutants like carbon dioxide. All of this means we can do exciting and important science while protecting our planet, too!

Abstract:Increasing demand for consumer goods from an increasing world population is placing enormous strain on the resources needed by the worlds manufacturing industries. Traditional resources have often been from non-renewable sources located in relatively accessible regions but these are finite, their exploitation nonsustainable and they are becoming scarce. At the same time, the wastes generated in manufacturing and in the use of the articles of today’s society have been allowed to accumulate in landfill sites which are now filling up sometimes leading to the questionable export of large quantities of hazardous substances across the planet. This “out-of-sight, out-of-mind” reaction to the problem can create serious health and safety problems as well as representing a non-sustainable loss of increasingly precious resources. Industrial symbiosis seeks a closed loop approach to the twin problems of resource and waste by making the latter the solution to the former – waste is the future resource. It can be quite effective at a quite simple level whereby one company makes use of the waste from a neighboring company but to really extend the concept and make it widely useful to both inter- and intra-sector industry transfer while maintaining environmental advantage, we need to use Green Chemistry to extend the value of waste streams. Food wastes are especially useful as sources of organic chemicals for a variety of processes and products; examples include the physical modification of polysaccharide wastes for use as adhesives, catalysts and separation media. Valuable chemicals for applications in sectors including cosmetics and coatings can be directly extracted from food supply chain waste using benign solvents, while other valuable chemicals including platform molecules, bio-solvents and fuel intermediates can be obtained by the low-temperature microwave processing of bio-wastes.

Current Opinion in Green and Sustainable Chemistry

Abstract:The fashion industry is strongly connected to consumer affluence and with more and more people worldwide, the demand for new and ever more sophisticated clothes seems inexhaustible. This translates into the production and consumption of very large quantities of natural and synthetic materials, and treatment chemicals. The lack of an established recycling industry to deal with the resulting waste streams coupled with the increasing complexity of the products means that we are losing most of the consumed resources as wastes. The presence of so many chemicals in these wastes can exaggerate the problem. Here, we look at the scale of the problem but also of the opportunity for waste valorisation. Particular attention is given to the different types of recycling that are possible and including the conversion of these wastes into valuable chemicals. Some methods to improve apparel lifecycles upstream are also considered.
