Abstract:In the past decades, many countries (e.g., Germany and Denmark) have experienced a significant change in their energy structures – from fossil-based resources to clean renewables. The scenario of highly penetrated renewables is going to be further enhanced in the future mixed energy paradigms. This requires that the production, distribution and use of the energy should be as technological efficient as possible and incentives to save energy at the end-user should also be strengthened. In order to realize the transition smoothly and effectively, energy conversion systems, currently based on power electronics technology, will again play an essential role in advancing the grid integration of renewables. In view of this issue, some of the most emerging renewable energies, e.g., wind energy and photovoltaic, which by means of power electronics are changing character as a major part in the electricity generation, are explored. Issues like demands to renewables, power converter technologies, control of the systems, and advanced grid integration are covered.

Abstract:Future power grids face various challenges due to a rapidly increasing share of renewable energy resources and increasing interplay with other energy sectors. Distributed energy resources (DERs) such as wind, solar, energy storage, combined heat and power plants, electric vehicles, and smart loads become prevalent. As shown in Figure 1, it has become an inevitable choice for the energy revolution to develop an integrated energy system that realizes the deep integration of new technologies with distributed energy and diversifies (cold, heat, electricity, gas, etc.) demand. Besides, we are moving towards an integrated energy system on an unprecedented scale. In the continuous development of integrated energy systems, the elements of participation and interaction are becoming more complex. The integration of variable sources and the efficient and synergistic utilization of these energies will be a key focus in the future development. This issue contains ten research articles focusing on modeling and analysis methods for IES, advanced technologies for DERs and microgrid, active distribution network, impact of DERs interconnection on the distribution network, etc. The paper by Cao et al. proposed the concept of shared ESS (Shared-ESS) for microgrid owner/ operator and applied it to the economic optimal dispatch of a microgrid cluster. The microgrids can achieve the peer-to-peer (P2P) transaction among each other with the use of the Shared-ESS, which significantly improves the energy utilization efficiency. The numerical analysis shows that the Shared-ESS can significantly reduce the energy bills of microgrid owner/operator, shift the usage of energy during peak time, and facilitate the renewable energy consumption. The orderly deregulation of planned electricity generation and consumption is an important measure for electricity market reform in several countries. Under the plan-market double-track mechanism (PMDM) implemented, a modified linear bidding function of generation companies was first proposed by He et al., and the unified clearing price of unilateral generation market is determined accordingly. Simulations based on data from a provincial electricity market in China illustrate that the market power can be reduced through a reasonable proportion of planned electricity designed by the power exchange. The paper by Chen et al. discusses a passive sliding mode control strategy of MMC-UPFC to achieve the advantages of both the passive controller and sliding mode controller. An unbalanced grid treatment strategy is also presented with the series side of MMC-UPFC. Abstract:Energy becoming more and more crucial and critical in the civilized populations and locates itself as one of the major requirements of living standards. Obtaining the energy from fossil fuels still is one of the common sources of energy production; however, there is a common understanding of increasing the potential use of renewables, carbon capture and storage, energy efficiency and intelligence and smart applications for collecting, distributing and transmission of the energy between the supply and demand locations. Those applications and generating the new policies, roadmaps in order to make an energy revolution and increase the usage of low-carbon energy technologies targeting the decrease of energy related emissions. Abstract:Due to the challenge of climate and energy crisis, renewable energy generation including solar generation has experienced significant growth. Increasingly high penetration level of photovoltaic (PV) generation arises in smart grid. Solar power is intermittent and variable, as the solar source at the ground level is highly dependent on cloud cover variability, atmospheric aerosol levels, and other atmosphere parameters. The inherent variability of large-scale solar generation introduces significant challenges to smart grid energy management. Accurate forecasting of solar power/irradiance is critical to secure economic operation of the smart grid. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the theoretical forecasting methodologies for both solar resource and PV power. Applications of solar forecasting in energy management of smart grid are also investigated in detail.

Abstract:Modern power grid is required to become smarter in order to provide an affordable, reliable, and sustainable supply of electricity. Under such circumstances, considerable activities have been carried out in the U.S. and Europe to formulate and promote a vision for the development of the future smart power grids. However, the majority of these activities only placed emphasis on the distribution grid and demand side; while the big picture of the transmission grid in the context of smart grids is still unclear. This paper presents a unique vision for the future smart transmission grids in which the major features that these grids must have are clearly identified. In this vision, each smart transmission grid is regarded as an integrated system that functionally consists of three interactive, smart components, i.e., smart control centers, smart transmission networks, and smart substations. Abstract:Global warming problem caused by greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels has caused wide public concern all over the world. This paper bases on renewable energy smart grid development as the background; the microgrid, power demand response, and vehicle to grid technologies are analyzed, and the basic structures and control strategies are also described. In order to transmit power from large‐scale offshore wind farms and promote the utilization of renewable generation, the multi‐terminal direct current (MTDC) based on voltage source converter (VSC) and solid state transformer are analyzed in detail, and the typical topologies and control methods are introduced. Finally, in order to improve the development of smart grid and VSC‐MTDC in China, the microgrid park of the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yanqing direct current microgrid, and Nanao and Zhoushan VSC‐MTDC are introduced. Abstract:Smart Grid presages an advanced power grid that revolutionizes the century-old traditional power grid and the way mankind uses energy. In China, the pressure on the current grid exerted by growing demand, environmental issues and the unbalanced energy use structure makes the transition to a 'smarter' and 'cleaner' grid inevitable. This paper firstly contrasts the concepts and research priorities of Smart Grid of China and other developed countries; then turns to the situation of Chinese energy and power use. China has the largest generating capacity, 79% of which is coal-fired plants. And China is also the largest carbon emitter in the world. Despite the challenges, China is also the most promising market for Smart Grid. The components of Smart Grid, especially the development of renewable energy, electric vehicles and smart substation are reinforced in the Chinese 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015). The paper examines also efforts by government, power utilities and research institutes. The paper concludes that developing Smart Grid will be beneficial both to China and the world. © 2013 Taylor & Francis.

This paper examines the synergy between smart grid innovations and renewable energy technologies, focusing on how such integrations can enhance grid stability, increase energy security, and promote environmental sustainability. We review various smart grid technologies, including advanced metering infrastructure, demand response, and grid automation, and discuss their role in optimizing the operation of renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. The paper also explores challenges such as intermittent energy supply, the need for energy storage solutions, and regulatory issues. Through detailed case studies and simulation results, we demonstrate effective strategies for seamless integration and discuss future prospects for this rapidly evolving field. This comprehensive overview aims to inform policymakers, engineers, and energy managers about leveraging smart grid capabilities to maximize the benefits of renewable energy systems.

Abstract:Since the energy sector is the dominant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, the decarbonization of energy systems is crucial for climate change mitigation. Two major challenges of energy systems decarbonization are renewable transition planning and sustainable systems operations. To address the challenges, incorporating emerging information and communication technologies can facilitate both the design and operations of future smart energy systems with high penetrations of renewable energy and decentralized structures. The present work provides a comprehensive overview of the applicability of emerging information and communication technologies in renewable transition and smart energy systems, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, blockchain, next-generation communication technologies, and the metaverse. Relevant research directions are introduced through reviewing existing literature. This review concludes with a discussion of the industrial use cases and demonstrations of smart energy technologies.

Abstract:Renewable Energy Systems have been in the spotlight of the academic and industrial research for more than two decades, thanks to the development of several fields related to the Electrical Engineering. More recently, with the increasing complexity of the individual renewable energy systems and the interconnection to the grid, the scientific panorama has been witnessing to a convergence of different topics, which span across several IEEE-IES thematic areas: power electronics, electrical machines, smart grids, energy storage, transportation electrification and aerospace. After a brief overview of the renewable energy technologies, this work deals with how the convergence of multiple technologies developed to provide marginal support to the grid has evolved into the foundation of the future utility grid and expanded to transportation sector. It will be shown how the design of a renewable energy system cannot prescind anymore from the electrical grid and from the ancillary services that are requested. Example of convergence are given for a smart transformer application and for a transportation application.

Abstract:This paper introduces various concepts that relate to information technology and the development of energy transmission and distribution. Key challenges need to be addressed in relation to energy consumption, such as the need to be responsive to current demand, which have been addressed through information technology systems. With the increased connectedness of energy systems, there has also been an increased need to ensure the information security of these systems. The Internet of Things (IoT) concept will be reviewed in relation to the connection of objects in energy systems as well as the concepts of Big Data and Cloud Computing. The former has developed in response to the need to predict energy usage more accurately and the latter offers the advantages of increased failover potential as well as much faster provisioning of enhanced capacity in IT systems to meet consumer demand.

Abstract:With the arrival of smart grid era and the advent of advanced communication and information infrastructures, bidirectional communication, advanced metering infrastructure, energy storage systems and home area networks would revolutionize the patterns of electricity usage and energy conservation at the consumption premises. Coupled with the emergence of vehicle-to-grid technologies and massive distributed renewable energy, there is a profound transition for the energy management pattern from the conventional centralized infrastructure towards the autonomous responsive demand and cyber-physical energy systems with renewable and stored energy sources. Under the sustainable smart grid paradigm, the smart house with its home energy management system (HEMS) plays an important role to improve the efficiency, economics, reliability, and energy conservation for distribution systems. In this paper, a brief overview on the architecture and functional modules of smart HEMS is presented. Then, the advanced HEMS infrastructures and home appliances in smart houses are thoroughly analyzed and reviewed. Furthermore, the utilization of various building renewable energy resources in HEMS, including solar, wind, biomass and geothermal energies, is surveyed. Lastly, various home appliance scheduling strategies to reduce the residential electricity cost and improve the energy efficiency from power generation utilities are also investigated.

Abstract:Renewable energy sources are one key enabler to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and to cope with the anthropogenic climate change. Their intermittent behavior and limited storage capabilities present a new challenge to power system operators to maintain power quality and reliability. Additional technical complexity arises from the large number of small distributed generation units and their allocation within the power system. Market liberalization and changing regulatory framework lead to additional organizational complexity. As a result, the design and operation of the future electric energy system have to be redefined. Sophisticated information and communication architectures, automation concepts, and control approaches are necessary in order to manage the higher complexity of so-called smart grids. This paper provides an overview of the state of the art and recent developments enabling higher intelligence in future smart grids. The integration of renewable sources and storage systems into the power grids is analyzed. Energy management and demand response methods and important automation paradigms and domain standards are also reviewed.

Abstract:Energy crisis and environmental pollution have expedited the transition of the energy system. Global use of low-carbon energy has increased from 1:6.16 to 1:5.37. Smart energy systems have received significant support and development to accelerate the development of smart cities and achieve the carbon neutrality goal. As a result of analyzing recent related publications and weighing their merits and downsides, it is determined that a more comprehensive and objective analysis of the main technologies underlying smart energy systems is necessary for the context of the new era. We report thoroughly on the six important hotspot technologies in smart energy systems, and undertake a comparative analysis of each technology's performance features, application status, and challenges. The ten key obstacles to developing a smart energy system are examined in terms of technology constraints, the social environment, human survival, and extreme climate circumstances. The four opportunities that smart energy systems confront in the digital age are examined in terms of governmental support, technology innovation, and public participation. The purpose of this research is to advance the creation of smart energy systems and the sustainable development of society in two ways: i) Smart energy system research should begin with a combination of technological innovation and practical application; ii) Key technologies in smart energy systems should consider the needs of people's livelihoods to evolve in a more intelligent and diverse path.

Abstract:This study presents a comprehensive analysis of integrating smart grids with renewable energy sources, focusing on technological advancements, economic impacts, and policy frameworks. The primary objective is to explore how smart grid technologies can efficiently incorporate renewable energy sources, thereby enhancing grid reliability, efficiency, and sustainability. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, the study examines successful case studies, pilot projects, and innovative practices that highlight the potential and challenges of this integration. Key findings reveal that advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain are crucial for the real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and optimized management of energy systems. These technologies address the inherent variability and intermittency of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. Case studies, including the Brooklyn Microgrid and Germany’s Energiewende, demonstrate significant improvements in energy resilience, efficiency, and consumer empowerment through decentralized energy systems. Economic analysis underscores the dual impact of cost savings from operational efficiencies and the financial challenges posed by substantial upfront investments in smart grid infrastructure. Policy frameworks play a pivotal role, with recommendations for supportive regulatory policies, increased funding for research and development, and enhanced public-private partnerships to drive innovation and consumer engagement. The study concludes that overcoming the technical, economic, and regulatory barriers requires coordinated efforts among stakeholders. Recommendations include developing consistent regulatory frameworks, fostering public-private partnerships, and implementing educational programs to encourage consumer participation in renewable energy initiatives. By addressing these challenges, the integration of smart grids with renewable energy sources can pave the way for a more sustainable, resilient, and efficient energy future.
