Abstract:In this paper, a novel timing offset estimation algorithm of low complexity is presented, which needs a few pilots. The results of simulation prove that the system performance with timing offset correction is approximate to that over AWGN channel.

Abstract:A novel carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation algorithm based on the maximum-likelihood (ML) criterion for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is proposed. In the proposed method, a well-known preamble with excellent timing synchronization is modified, and based on the improved preamble three fractional frequency offset estimators are investigated. The estimation range and the mean-square-error (MSE) performance under various signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) of the estimators are discussed. Finally, our proposed estimators are compared with the traditional Schmidl (SC) algorithm in terms of MSE. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed methods have better performance than the SC frequency offset estimation algorithm in AWGN and multipath fading channels without increasing complexity. Moreover, the special characteristics of the improved preamble lead to a superior timing performance.

Abstract:This paper proposes a pilot-assisted sampling frequency offset (SFO) estimation algorithm for MIMO OFDM (multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) systems. The sampling frequency offset is estimated from phase errors in the received pilot subcarrier symbols between two transmitted OFDM blocks. The optimal weight for each SFO estimate is derived. The proposed weighted method is remarkably superior to the unweighted method, and the receive diversity exploited by the proposed method can significantly reduce the MSE (mean square error) of the SFO estimator. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can accurately estimate the SFO in both AWGN channels and multipath fading channels. © 2008 IEEE.

Abstract:For the existing time-domain methods of carrier-frequency offset estimation for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) systems,estimation range is enlarged at a cost of estimation accuracy reduction,or vice versa.A novel multistage frequency offset estimation algorithm based on time-domain training sequence was proposed to avoid the conflict between estimation accuracy and estimation range The algorithom gradually approached through multiple stages and removed the phase ambiguity in every stage,so improved the estimation accuracy continuously.Then the estimates obtained in all the steps were combined by carrying out the best linear unbiased estimation(BLUE) to further improve the estimation accuracy.Theoretical analysis and simulation show that by replacing heavy search by simple modification,the proposed algorithm can reduce significantly the computational complexity for estimation of large frequency offset while maintains good performance.The main operations of this algorithm can be carried out in parallel,thus the algorithm can be applied to high-data-rate communication systems.

Abstract:We present a novel timing offset estimation method for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) systems. The proposed estimator is designed to avoid the ambiguity in timing offset estimation. The performance of proposed scheme is presented in terms of mean and mean-square error (MSE) sense. The simulation results show that the proposed estimator is unbiased and has significantly smaller MSE.

Abstract:In OFDM systems, because of sensitivity to frequency offset, frequency offset must be compensated before DFT is demodulated in the receiver. In this paper we described a new technique to estimate frequency offset using more than two repeated data symbols. We also discussed different strategies for observation to obtain our estimation. Computer simulation shows our algorithm can obtain good performance both in Gaussian environment and multipath environment.

Abstract:The paper proposes a new CFO (carrier frequency-offset) estimation method for OFDM systems. This method uses scattered pilots to estimate both integer and fractional CFO, which are usually estimated by continual pilots. Since scattered pilots are usually used to estimate the CFR (channel frequency response), using them at the same time, to estimate frequency-offset does not bring about additional cost for the system. Thus, subchannels applied to transmit the continual pilots, are saved for useful data, which increases the spectral efficiency. Moreover, performances of estimating CFO by both scattered and continual pilots are compared and analyzed in both AWGN and multipath fading channels. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that for both integer and fractional CFO estimation, the performance of the scattered pilots-based algorithm is as good as that of continual pilots-based algorithms or acceptable for practical application.

Abstract:Robust timing and frequency synchronization in OFDM systems is addressed in this paper.First,an improved synchronization algorithm is presented,which converts the "plateau" in the traditional Schmidl&Cox algorithm into a single peak,and the position of the peak can be used to simultaneously estimate symbol timing and fractional frequency offset.Then,an integer frequency offset estimation algorithm using the differentiated sequence of the preamble is proposed,which is robust to the remaining timing offset.The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated in both AWGN and SUI multipath fading channel.Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves a better estimation performance than existing algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a novel frequency synchronization method which has larger estimation range than conventional method proposed by Tufvesson. A two steps frequency offset estimation method is performed in the new method. In the first step the received signal is correlated with local training sequence to eliminate the influence of training sequence which makes the estimation range of frequency offset is independent of period of the repeated data in the training sequence. The received signal is correlated with its delay in the second step to obtain the fine estimation of frequency offset. Precise estimation can be achieved in the proposed method than Tufvesson's method. The period of the repeated data in the training sequence determines the estimation range of the frequency offset in the conventional method, while in the new method they are irrelevant. Tens of subcarriers spacing can be estimated by the new method. The new method can be used in other cases as long as a known sequence is transmitted, which will introduce valuable flexibility in training sequence design. The validity of the algorithm is verified in AWGN channel and multipath fading channel.

Abstract:This paper considers the time and frequency synchronization based on the interspersed pilots. The shortcoming of an existing algorithm is observed, and a new channel estimation assisted time and frequency algorithm is proposed. Since the channel estimation is always needed by the data transmission, our newly proposed algorithm can improve the synchronization performance without too much increase in the complexity. The simulations prove the effectiveness of the newly proposed algorithm.

Abstract:A novel frequency offset tracking algorithm for Space-Time Block Coded (STBC) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems is proposed in this work. Tracking of a frequency offset between the transmitter and the receiver is often aided by transmitting pilots embedded in the data payload. The proposed algorithm mainly exploits the specific construction of the OFDM symbol in STBC-OFDM systems, which does not need any additional pilots or sequences in the data field, providing high efficiency in spectrum. The estimator is derived on the basis of the maximum likelihood (ML) theory. Simulation results show that in a 2 x 2 multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system, under the assumption that the antennas are uncorrelated to each other, this method can provide a significant performance improvement in terms of the estimation accuracy of the frequency offset.

Abstract:In this paper, two preamble designs and the corresponding timing offset estimation methods for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems are proposed. The performance of the timing offset estimations in both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and multipath channel in term of estimation variance is obtained by computer simulation. Compared to the conventional Minn's method, both proposed methods are robust and present much smaller variance in multipath channels.

Abstract:A novel timing offset estimation method for direct-detection (DD) optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OOFDM) systems are proposed. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated in terms of mean and mean-square error (MSE) in one experimental system with 4 Gbits/s DD-OOFDM signal transmission over 100-km standard single mode fiber (SMF). The experimental results show that the proposed method has smaller MSE than the other methods and achieves higher timing estimation accuracy in DD-OOFDM transmission system. Abstract:To overcome the serious influence of synchronization offset on OFDM systems, a novel timing and frequency synchronization algorithm for OFDM systems based on training sequence is proposed. The new timing metric and the estimation algorithm of fractional frequency offset are deduced based on the new structure of training sequence. The proposed timing algorithm eliminates the defect in conventional methods effectively, and the proposed method of frequency offset estimation has the same variance as Schmidl algorithm. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has good performance in both AWGN and multi-path fading channels.

Abstract:A channel estimation algorithm is proposed for OFDM wireless communication system under time-varying multipath channel.Based on considering the channel to be linear varying in a short period of time,the proposed algorithm estimates the time variety of the channel on account of pilot information in two consecutive OFDM frames.Math simulation is used to analyze the algorithm.The result shows that,compared with the existing channel estimation algorithms for OFDM system under time-vary multipath channel,the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce estimation errors.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a new frequency synchronization method for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system by using PN sequences. It is an improvement of Tufvesson's method. In the new method the frequency offset is estimated in two steps. First a small step (span of the correlation) is used for estimation of frequency offset which will result in a larger estimation range but is less precise. After the frequency offset has been compensated, the second estimation is conducted which is a large step. The new algorithm has large estimation range and the estimation is more precise. Performance of the new estimator is improved drastically compared to that of the old one. In AWGN channels, the Cramer-Rao bound of the new method is achieved and it coincides with the Cramer-Rao bound of Schmidl's method.

Abstract:An improved frequency offset estimation method used in high speed wireless environment is proposed.A training sequence frame is made of Zadoff-Chu sequences with four times repetition.First,the received signal is correlated with local training sequences to eliminate the influence of training sequence.Fine frequency synchronization is achieved by taking two times of frequency offset estimation.The proposed method has good estimation accuracy and large estimation span.All processes of the frequency offset estimation are taken before FFT,leading to a saving of the system synchronization time and reduction of the system complexity.Simulations in AWGN and Rayleigh channels verify validity of the technique.

Abstract:Synchronization is one of the most crucial techniques in OFDM.This paper proposes a novel carrier frequency offset estimation algorithm for interleaved OFDMA uplink.In interleaved OFDMA uplink,each user's signal has a special periodic structure within an OFDMA block.By utilizing the signal structure characteristic and novel subspace-based method,multiusers carrier frequency offsets can be obtained This algorithm is proposed by using total least squares(TLS) method instead of eigenvalue decomposition to obtain the noise subspace.The algorithm has a low computational complexity in comparison with the multiple signal classification(MUSIC) algorithm and the performance of the algorithm compares well with the MUSIC algorithm.Simulation results show that the method is effective.

Abstract:In some OFDM systems, time domain cyclic pseudo-random (PN) sequences are inserted between OFDM symbols. This paper proposes a frequency-offset estimation method utilizing the good correlation property of such PN sequences. By combining three levels of estimations, which have different precisions and ranges, the proposed scheme can achieve accurate frequency estimation under different channel environment. Simulation results show that this approach performs well in both AWGN channels and multipath channels.

Abstract:OFDM(orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) is very sensitive to frequency offset originating from the Doppler frequency offset and the frequency difference between transmitter and receiver,resulting in severe ICI(inter-carrier interference) and performance degradation. In order to solve this problem,an algorithm based on subspace method and utilizing the VC (virtual carrier) is proposed. The adaptive realization of this algorithm is studied. Simulation shows that the estimated values by the algorithm proposed matches the set values very well.
