Abstract:The history of plastic surgery in China dates back to about 17 centuries ago when Chinese ancestors documented a case of cleft lip repair, whereas the concepts of modern plastic surgery were imported from the West. In the last 50 years, the Chinese plastic surgeons have thrived and, through their hard work and even harder-gained experiences, witnessed the emergence of microsurgery in the 1960s, the development of craniofacial surgery during the 1970s, and cosmetic surgery becoming a trend since 1980s.With the fast renovation of treatment methods and the broadened spectrum of indications, more specialists with solid basic science knowledge and adequate clinical experience are needed for providing plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic treatment. Attempts and efforts have been made to establish a suitable training system in China for plastic surgeons and plastic subspecialists recently, which led to the transformation of pathway for one to become a plastic surgeon and provoked thoughts upon the upcoming challenges.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the role of American plastic surgeon Jerome P. Webster in the history of plastic surgery in China.METHODS:The archives stored in J. P. Webster' s library and documents are analyzed and information is also collected by interviewing some senior plastic surgeon (oral history).RESULTS:The experience of Webster in China for two times and the documents about the Shanghai plastic surgery course in 1948 were acquired. The doctors who participated the Shanghai plastic surgery course were studied for their career, especially Hongyin Zhu, Liangneng Wang, and Disheng Zhang. The role of Webster in the development of plastic surgery in China was evaluated objectively.CONCLUSIONS:Webster started his career in Peking Union Medical College at early 1920s, who went back to China in 1948 to enlighten the first group of Chinese plastic surgeon in Shanghai plastic surgery course.

Abstract:Background More patients receive organ transplantation surgeries due to the advancement in immunosuppressive agents and surgical techniques. Some of those patients may need to undergo plastic or reconstructive surgery. Long-term use of immunosuppressive agents raises some serious problems. Therefore, this study aimed to introduce our experience about the safety and effectiveness of plastic surgeries after solid organ allograft transplantation.Methods A retrospective review of 17 transplant recipients who underwent different reconstructive or cosmetic operations was carried out. The subjects included 1 heart transplant, 1 liver transplant and 15 kidney transplant recipients.Results All patients tolerated the plastic surgery procedures well. Flaps and skin grafts were the main constructive methods. There were no postoperative infections and wound dehiscence. Transferred flaps survived completely. Skin grafts took well. Three of the cosmetic surgery patients were satisfied with the results.Conclusions Immunosuppressed organ transplant recipients can successfully undergo major reconstructive and cosmetic surgery when given special attention. Abstract:Plastic surgery is a broad field, including maxillofacial surgery, skin flaps and grafts, liposuction and body contouring, breast surgery, and facial cosmetic procedures. Due to the requirements of plastic surgery for the biological safety of materials, biomaterials are widely used because of its superior biocompatibility and biodegradability. Currently, there are many kinds of biomaterials clinically used in plastic surgery and their applications are diverse. Moreover, with the rise of three-dimensional printing technology in recent years, the macroscopically more precise and personalized bio-scaffolding materials with microporous structure have made good progress, which is thought to bring new development to biomaterials. Therefore, in this paper, we reviewed the plastic surgery biomaterials and current progress in their 3D manufacturing technology.

Long-term Complications after Liquid Silicone Injection: A Case Report and Literature Review

Abstract:Liquid silicone injection for cosmetic purposes has a long and notorious history. However, reports of delayed and extensive lesions are rare. Here, we report a case of long-term complications after the use of liquid silicone materials for the correction of facial deformities. In this case, the complications of foreign body granulomas and unique silicone nodules lasting for more than 10 years were reported. Liquid silicone injection can induce delayed adverse reactions, which are difficult to treat. This case presents the successful surgical treatment of a mass injection of liquid silicone. The focus of treatment should be to remove the injected material and degenerated tissue as much as possible while protecting normal tissue and its function. Through open reconstructive surgery with an appropriate incision, postoperative scars can be hidden. Consequently, both functional and aesthetic outcomes can be achieved.

Abstract:Objective The purpose of the research was to find out the prevalence of the body dysmorphic disorder seeking plastic and aesthetic surgery, to observe the characteristic of the body image of the plastic and aesthetic populations,and to identify the influence of plastic and aesthetic surgery on the body image. Methods 340 patients were tested with the self- rating scale of body image before and after the plastic and aesthetic surgeries. Results The prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder in 340 plastic and aesthetic patients was 10.3%. Before plastic and aesthetic surgery, the common populations paid much more attention to the sense of the body defect and the others' appreciation, and body dysmorphic disorder patients paid much more attention to every aspect. In plastic and aesthetic populations, the score of the preoperative scales was 19.906±11.183,and that of the postoperative scales was 16.812±10.824(P<0.05). In the body Dysmorphic disorder patients, the score of the preoperative scales was 41.800±5.540, and that of the postoperative scales was 19.543±11.786(P<0.05). Conclusion Body dysmorphic disorder is the frequent psychological complication in the plastic and aesthetic populations. Before the operation, the plastic and aesthetic populations have the strong self- defective consciousness, and pay much attention to others' appreciation of their body image. Plastic and aesthetic surgery can improve their body image. Plastic and aesthetic surgery can improve the pathological body image of body dysmorphic disorder patients, and body dysmorphic disorder is not the contraindication of the plastic and aesthetic surgery.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The field of plastic surgery has developed rapidly in the last couple of decades in Hong Kong and Shanghai, China. Both cities have their own educational system for training plastic surgeons. Their training programs differ in many ways, including the surgical exposure of undergraduate studies, the structure, curriculum, and operative requirements of residency training. In general, Hong Kong has a single pathway of residency training with more early clinical exposure in an undergraduate study. On the contrary, Shanghai has multiple pathways of residency training that are heavily emphasized in academic research. Both Hong Kong and Shanghai should complement each other to modify their plastic surgery training programs that will eventually benefit the field of plastic surgery education.

Abstract:Oculoplastic and orbital surgery is concerned with the occurrence, manifestation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the eyelid, orbit and lacrimal diseases, as well as the repair and reconstruction of the related deformities and defects. Since the beginning of the new century, the number of patients with eyelid and orbital diseases has increased continuously, and the team of specialists has expanded rapidly. The development of oculoplastic and orbital surgery in China has entered an all-round new stage, especially with the establishment of Chinese Society of Oculoplastic Surgery and Orbital Disease in 2013. Oculoplastic and orbital surgery in China has made outstanding achievements in strengthening the training of professional talents, promoting interdisciplinary and international exchanges, improving the academic level of basic research, and emphasizing on the research of translational medicine. The technique of ocular plastic surgery has been progressing continuously. Cosmetic surgery of the eye has gained widespread popularity and standardization. Orbital surgery has recorded an innovative, interdisciplinary and rapid growth. International exchanges have helped to expand the international influence and competitiveness. The relationship between self-acceptance and mental health of plastic surgery patients

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the evidence of associations between self-acceptance and mental health of plastic surgery patients. Methods: Totally 510 plastic surgery patients in a 3A hospital in Beijing were recruited by convenience sampling method. They were investigated using The Self Acceptance Questionnaire (SAQ) and The Mental Health Scale of plastic surgery patients. Results: The average score of self-acceptance was (2.71±0.35). The total score of mental health was (1.41±0.54), in which the subscale of appearance concern got the highest score (1.92±0.60). Hierarchical regression analysis showed that emotional disturbance and body image inferiority were signiifcantly associated with self-acceptance, which explained 33.4% of the total variance. Signiifcance was also seen for self-evaluation and self-acceptance with mental health, which explained 27.0% of the total variance. Conclusion: The level of self-acceptance and mental health of plastic surgery clients was in moderate level. Over-concern to the appearance is the main mental problem. Self-acceptance was associated with plastic surgery clients' mental health status.

Abstract:I want to thank Dr. Jessie Yu and Dr. Jesse Selber for serving as co-guest editors for this issue of Seminars in Plastic Surgery on "New and updated applications for robotic surgery in plastic surgery." We also appreciate the efforts made by each outstanding author for contributing to this issue. Dr. Yu is an Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. She is a board-certified reconstructive microsurgeon and provides a comprehensive spectrum of plastic and reconstructive surgical care. Dr. Yu has specialized interests in complex free flap reconstruction after breast, head and neck, and orthopaedic surgeries, as well as the surgical treatment of lymphedema. Dr. Yu is dedicated to providing compassionate and personalized patient care while optimizing safe and long-lasting aesthetic and functional outcomes. Dr. Yu completed her MD at the NYU School of Medicine and completed her Plastic Surgery Residency at the Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone Health in New York City. After residency, she pursued an advanced fellowship in Microsurgery and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she focused on patient-tailored, state-of-the-art reconstruction techniques, including deep inferior epigastric perforator and profunda artery perforator free flaps, virtual surgical planning-planned osteocutaneous free flaps, and super microsurgery for lymphedema. Dr. Yu is passionate and dedicated toward applying cutting-edge plastic surgical techniques to restore quality of life for oncologic patients. Her numerous publications and presentations at national meetings reflect her commitment to research and education. Dr. Jesse Selber is the Physician Executive, Surgery Service Line Chief, and Professor of Plastic Surgery in Corewell Health. He is a graduate of Brown University, the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Selber trained in Surgery and Plastic Surgery at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and completed a clinical fellowship in Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX. Dr. Selber's clinical practice consists of breast, head and neck, trunk, and extremity reconstruction. He has developed the world's first robotic plastic surgery program and has led groundbreaking transplants. He continues to pioneer and innovate in multiple areas of reconstruction. Dr. Selber has had over 200 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, serves as a reviewer or editor for multiple journals, and has led the research effort for the Department of Plastic Surgery at MD Anderson for the past 10 years. Abstract:Objective To research the procedure of male face-lift. Methods According to the distribution features of skin and hair in the male face, the flap assigment at the incision point was improved. Results From 1995 to 2000,25 cases of male facelift were performed, aged from 37 to 68. Postoperative follow-up of 1 to 24 months showed the results were satisfactory. Conclusion Male face-lift has satisfactory rejuvenation results by improving the incision design and skin-lifting technique.

Craniomaxillofacial Surgery in China: What Lies Ahead?

Abstract:Sir:FigureTracing back history, in 1962, Paul Tessier established a milestone by performing the world's first surgical correction of orbital hypertelorism, thereby marking the birth of a new operation in craniomaxillofacial surgery. In 1977, Professor Ti-Sheng Chang of the Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital performed the very first operations for hypertelorism, thereby proclaiming the establishment of craniofacial surgery in China. This field continued to consolidate and expand rapidly. In contrast to the congenital nature of craniofacial deformities in Western countries, the focus of attention in Asian countries has been directed at facial contouring. Prominent mandibular angles have become synonymous with Asian craniofacial surgery. Despite the fact that the field of craniomaxillofacial surgery originated from the need to correct congenital craniofacial deformities, in China, the incidence of such anomalies as scaphocephaly is much less than in Western countries. To illustrate this difference, in Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, China's largest and most authoritative center for craniofacial surgery, there is an average of 40 anomaly cases annually (<10 percent of total hospital admissions). Is the development of craniofacial surgery in China limited to the treatment of prominent mandibular angle? There is little potential for further improvement in the field of surgery for the mandibular angle, despite its being one of the pillar techniques. It is my belief that the area for potential improvement lies in the advancement of the existing surgical devices. Some surgeons shift toward orthognathic surgery. This brings us to the question of a well-established class I academic discipline such as stomatology. What is the competitive edge that can be offered by the new field of craniomaxillofacial surgery? Some experts have also proposed embracing soft-tissue reconstructive surgery into craniomaxillofacial surgery. However, this change to advocating for the use of soft tissue as a reconstructive material is inherently contradictory to the traditional characteristic feature of craniofacial surgery—use of bone for reconstruction. Eliminating this unique feature poses a direct question to the existence of craniomaxillofacial surgery. Craniomaxillofacial surgery seems to have made little progress since being founded by Tessier. It is my belief that the field of craniofacial surgery is still at a primitive stage and lacks a clear direction for future development. Whenever I witness disappointing results and poor patient satisfaction, I cannot help but to suspect that unperfected surgical technique is the underlying culprit. Perhaps most doubtful of all is craniofacial bone grafting, as clinically we have observed poor graft absorption rates, in comparison with other parts of the body. Returning to the question of where craniomaxillofacial science is heading: Tessier formulated the core principles and theories by relying mostly on his clinical explorations as opposed to formal scientific research. It is the authors' opinion that through finding the answers to the questions raised by his theories and conducting extensive scientific research, one will pave the way for the next breakthrough in this field.
