Abstract:A Cyber-physical System (CPS) architecture in shop floor is proposed for achieving the goals of intelligent manufacturing. The proposed architecture provides a guideline to construct a CPS system from the hardware interconnection, to the data acquisition, processing, and visualization, and the final knowledge acquisition and learning. Furthermore, three key enabling technologies are discussed, i.e., interconnection and interoperability among different devices, industrial big data analysis for production process management and control, and intelligent decision-making based on knowledge acquisition and learning methodology. Finally, a CPS added on a small-scale flexible automated production line in our Micro Manufacturing System Lab is taken as an example to verify the feasibility of proposed CPS architecture.

Abstract:The internal logistics in the shop-floor is extremely sophisticated for the variability and complexity of products in Industry 4.0 environment. Cyber-Physical System (CPS) which combines computer science, information and communication technologies is a critical solution to achieve Industry 4.0. To tackle with personalized production, high flexibility and rapid reconfiguration capabilities of internal logistics are required in shop-floor. Intralogistics-oriented CPS is discussed in this paper and the framework of models in cyber space for the equipment under the environment are presented. Through the utilization of wireless sensors and controllers, a remote management platform is implemented. Equipment interconnection, logistics scheduling and remote operation are realized by portable terminals via Internet. The effectiveness of the proposed solution is verified in an actual production workshop.

Moreover, by utilizing advanced information analytics, networked machines will be able to perform more efficiently, collaboratively and resiliently. Such trend is transforming manufacturing industry to the next generation, namely Industry 4.0. At this early development phase, there is an urgent need for a clear definition of CPS. In this paper, a unified 5-level architecture is proposed as a guideline for implementation of CPS.

Abstract:Oriented by mass customization in recent years, manufacturing enterprises need to transform their traditional workshops to smart workshop. Cyber-physical system (CPS), as a core of industry 4.0, plays an essential role in smart manufacturing. By applying CPS, the traditional workshop will shift into a new paradigm with intelligence and flexibility. However, the implementation of CPS in workshop is a complex task, which is still in its infancy. Thus, this paper presents a comprehensive perspective on CPS-based workshop, which can facilitate the implementation CPS-based workshop in industry. At first, seven features of CPS-based workshop are identified, including self-sensing, self-awareness, self-assessment, self-optimization, self-adjustment, self-configuration, and self-control. Then, the architecture of CPS-based workshop is proposed from technical perspective. Next, a conceptual model of CPS-based workshop is developed, which presents the three fundamental elements and closed-loop mechanism of CPS-based workshop. Finally, a case study of Chinese machinery manufacturing company illustrates the feasibility of implementing CPS-based workshop in industry.

Abstract:Given the multiple varieties and small batches, the production of industrial robots faces the ongoing challenges of flexibility, self-organization, self-configuration, and other “smart” requirements. Recently, cyber physical systems have provided a promising solution for the requirements mentioned above. Despite recent progress, some critical issues have not been fully addressed at the shop floor level, including dynamic reorganization and reconfiguration, ubiquitous networking, and time constrained computing. Toward the next generation production system for industrial robots, this study proposed a hybrid architecture for smart assembly shop floors with closed-loop dynamic cyber physical interactions. Aiming for dynamic reorganization and reconfiguration, the study also proposed modularized smart assembly units for the deployment of physical assembly processes. Enabling technologies, such as multiagent system (MAS), self-organized wireless sensor actuator networks, and edge computing, were discussed and then integrated into the proposed architecture. Furthermore, a multijoint robot assembly process was selected as a target scenario. Thus, an MAS was developed to simulate the coordination and negotiation mechanisms for the proposed architecture on the basis of the Java Agent Development Framework platform.

Abstract:The rapid development new generation of information technologies facilitate the emergence of cyber-physical production system (CPPS) which could pave a way to exploring new smart manufacturing solutions. Digital twin (DT) is the technical core for establishing CPPS in the context of industry 4.0. Developing an easy-to-deploy and simple-to-use DT-based CPPS is a critical research gap. In this paper, a systemic framework is proposed to provide guidelines for rapid system configuration and easy runtime of DT-based CPPS by integrating CPS, DT modeling technologies, event-driven distributed cooperation mechanisms, and web technologies. The concept of CPS node (CPSN) for manufacturing resources is established by integrating semantic information model, 3D geometric model and function modules. Various CPSNs are orchestrated as an autonomous CPPS using dynamic resource registration and binding technologies. To achieve easy runtime of DT-based CPPS, event-driven distributed cooperation among CPSNs and web-based remote control of CPPS are proposed respectively. Finally, to verify the feasibility of the proposed framework, a prototype of DT-based CPPS is implemented, based on which an exemplary case is conducted.

Abstract:Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) tightly integrate software and plant components and transcend software and control domains. It is greatly desired that the close interactions between software and plant components of CPS are clearly explored even before the complete system is put together. Lack of strict definition for interaction between the two domains has been considered as an obstacle to the development of high-assurance CPS. We present an approach to formalizing HW/SW interface. We advocate the use of Cyber/Physical interface as a step towards bridging this gap. Such interface models should have formal semantics, be ecient for co-simulation, and cover all Cyber/Physical behaviors described by Cyber/Physical interface. Case studies on a realistic example have shown that the approach has major potential in verifying system level properties of CPS, therefore improving the high-confidence of CPS.

Abstract:Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are engineered systems that are built from and depend upon the seamless integration of computational algorithms and physical components.Unlike traditional embedded systems that are typically stand-alone, a full-fledged CPS is characterized by a network of interacting elements with physical input and output, resembling the structure of a sensor network.Tremendous progress has been made in advancing CPS technology over the last five years.New smart CPS will drive innovation and competition in sectors as diverse as aerospace, automotive, and chemical process, civil infrastructure, energy, healthcare, manufacturing, transportation, and so forth.One example of CPS is an intelligent manufacturing line, where the machine can perform a variety of processes by communicating with the components.Ongoing advancement in science and engineering will continue to enhance the link between computational and physical elements, dramatically increasing the adaptability, autonomy, efficiency, functionality, reliability, safety, and usability of cyber-physical systems.This special issue is focused on the CPS in manufacturing and service systems.New CPS advancements in mathematical modeling, control, and optimization for complex engineering systems, especially applications in manufacturing, transportation, and energy, are emphasized.Topics covered in this issue include (i) CPS modeling, control and optimization for networked manufacturing processes, systems, and applications, (ii) intelligent sensing technology and instrumentations, and (iii) smart control and energy management in industries and intelligent transportation systems.

Abstract:Smart manufacturing is the core idea of the fourth industrial evolution. For a smart manufacturing shop floor, real-time monitoring, simulation and prediction of manufacturing operations are vital to improve the production efficiency and flexibility. In this paper, the Cyber-Physical System (CPS) and Digital Twin technologies are introduced to build the interconnection and interoperability of a physical shop floor and corresponding cybershop floor. A Digital Twin-based Cyber-Physical Production System (DT-CPPS) is further established, and the configuring mechanism, operating mechanism and real-time data-driven operations control of DT-CPPS are discussed in detail. It is expected that DT-CPPS will provide the basis for shop floors to march towards smart manufacturing.

Abstract:Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are an emerging discipline that involves engineered computing and communicating systems interfacing the physical world. The widespread applications of CPSs still face enormous challenges because of the lack of theoretical foundations. In this technical survey, we review state-of-the-art design techniques from various angles. The aim of this work is to provide a better understanding of this emerging multidisciplinary methodology. The features of CPSs are described, and the research progress is analyzed using the following aspects: energy management, network security, data transmission and management, model-based design, control technique, and system resource allocation. We focus on CPS resource optimization, and propose a system performance optimization model with resource constraints. In addition, some classic applications (e.g., integrating intelligent road with unmanned vehicle) are provided to show that the prospects of CPSs are promising. Furthermore, research challenges and suggestions for future work are outlined in brief.

Abstract:Today''s market demands are with features of multi-product and small batch, to make manufacturing system meet this trend, the system architecture and optimizing technology on the operation of cyber-physical production systems (CPPS) has become research focus.After analyzing the background of CPPS and the research status of task scheduling, dynamic task scheduling method for CPPS is studied.Firstly, the logical model for system operation is built using Petri net.Then, the expression form of tasks and matching method with devices are designed, the method make system accept, analyze and execute tasks automatically.Secondly, to guarantee the overall operation effect of the distributed systems, a two-level decision model that based on dynamic decision center is designed, and the performance indicators and scheduling rules are described.Finally, through the example verification, it proves that the strategy proposed in this paper can not only meet the production requirements of the system, but also can guarantee the optimization of each index.

Abstract:Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) have attracted many researchers in areas as diverse as aerospace, manufacturing, transportation, and so on. However, modeling methodologies and tools for autonomous objects in CPS are still lacking. In this paper, the CPS-Agent is proposed to model objects with consideration of temporal-spatial traits and interaction with physical environment. It is formulated by a fivetuple. Furthermore, considering that no universal methodology of coordination strategy formulation could be used to guide researchers, we present a role-based strategy formulation to make work patterns of CPS-Agents more clear. In terms of network communication among CPS-Agents, a set of communicative primitives is tailored based on the FIPA-ACL specification. Afterward, to guide engineers in designing systems according to their application requirements in the area of CPS, we design templates and a novel visual support tool for generating C++ files automatically corresponding to customized CPS-Agents, coordination strategies, and coordination groups. Finally, the complete development process based on our methodologies and tool is illustrated by an instance of a car team.

Abstract:The key to achieve a certain goal for Cyber Physical Systems is coordination of system tasks. By analyzing the characteristics of CPSs, an approach for task decomposition was proposed. This approach uses design structure matrix (DSM) to describe the relationship of the tasks, decomposes tasks by decoupling and recombination according to the degree of coupling between atomic tasks. Furthermore, the task process model based on Petri net is constructed for the decomposed sub-tasks, and the relationship of sub-tasks is graphically shown, which provides a theoretical basis for the task execution and scheduling and dynamic reorganization of CPSs resources.

Abstract:A new generation of industrial revolution represented by intelligent manufacturing has come. Multi-product and small batch have become trend in market demands nowadays. Cyber-physical production system is a useful tool to meet this trend by performing tasks intelligently. Since cyber-physical production system performs tasks intelligently and autonomously, tasks and resources should be defined in standardized form in order to be identified and analyzed. Thus, how to define and analyze tasks and resources become the prerequisite for the operation of cyber-physical production system. In this article, a tasks and resources matching and analysis method is proposed for cyber-physical production system. First, the form of process knowledge base is designed, and the method for tasks and resources definition and matching is discussed. Next, the model of system operation logical based on colored Petri net and processing route generation algorithm is built. The parameters forecast method for non-standard processes is designed based on backpropagation neural network. Finally, implementation mechanism and effectiveness of the method are verified by a prototype system.

Abstract:Cyber physical system (CPS) enables companies to keep high traceability and controllability in manufacturing for better quality and improved productivity. However, several challenges including excessively long waiting time and a serious waste of energy still exist on the shop-floor where limited buffer exists for each machine (e.g., shop-floor that manufactures large-size products). The production logistics tasks are released after work-inprocesses (WIPs) are processed, and the machines will be occupied before trolleys arrival when using passive material handling strategy. To address this issue, a proactive material handling method for CPS enabled shop-floor (CPS-PMH) is proposed. Firstly, the manufacturing resources (machines and trolleys) are made smart by applying CPS technologies so that they are able to sense, act, interact and behave within a smart environment. Secondly, a shop-floor digital twin model is created, aiming to reflect their status just like real-life objects, and key production performance indicators can be analysed timely. Then, a time-weighted multiple linear regression method (TWMLR) is proposed to forecast the remaining processing time of WIPs. A proactive material handling model is designed to allocate smart trolleys optimally. Finally, a case study from Southern China is used to validate the proposed method and results show that the proposed CPS-PMH can largely reduce the total non-value-added energy consumption of manufacturing resources and optimize the routes of smart trolleys.

Abstract:Cyber-Physical System (CPS) is an emergent approach that focuses on the integration of computational applications with physical devices, being designed as a network of interacting cyber and physical elements. In view of the poor plasticity and non-uniformity of the CPS modeling approach, a comprehensive and integrated design, modeling and representation methodology should continue to be researched. This study presents a conceptual modeling framework (physical, mediator, FBs, agents and holons, PMFAH) and key techniques (CPPS-Mediator, CPPS-Modeler and CPPS-Semantic Processor) aimed at facilitating the design, modeling and representation of Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS), based on employing a hybrid modeling methodology that mainly draws on certain system design paradigms, modeling and representation technologies. Finally, a prototype called CPPS-Tools for supporting CPPS modeling is designed. This paper aims to serve as an important reference for using this framework and key techniques as a basis for developing systematic compositional modeling and analysis schemes for hybrid modeling of CPPS.

Abstract:Cyber-physical system (CPS) is a multi-dimensional complex system in which physical world operations are monitored and controlled using the communication and computing components, and they interact with each other in order to achieve a global optimization of such system operation. Dynamic response to the emergencies in a public environment not only requires the perception capability that obtains such useful information, but also needs the optimum operation methods to handling them. With the tight integration of communication, computing and control, a CPS can be used to address the aforementioned goals. In this paper, a framework of the CPS for public environment perception and emergency handling is developed, and its requirements to each component in the framework are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, a task allocation mechanism and a hybrid path planning approach are also presented for a set of robots in the CPS to handle uncertain emergencies collaboratively. Finally, we demonstrate the system using a case study in which mobile robots are equipped with multiple sensors to handle fires with different cases in a scenario of public environment, and the simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed approaches and the feasibility of such system.
