Abstract:The seeds of different varieties of mat rush were treated by 60 Co γ-rays irradiation of 500,1000,1500 and 2000Gy.The seedlings cultured from treated seeds were used to detect the root activity,seedling growth,chlorophyll content,activities of polyphenol oxidase and catalase,and to investigate the effect of irradiation treatment on the physiological and biochemical properties of mat rush.The results showed that root activity,chlorophyll content and polyphenol oxidase activity of the control group was higher than those of all treatment groups,indicating that irradiation treatment could affect the above physiological and biochemical traits.Meanwhile,it was found that hydrogen peroxide activity of 500Gy treatment was higher than that of CK and other treatment.In addition,with dose increasing,the stem length of seedlings was increased,suggesting that irradiation treatment could promote the seedling growth within some range of dosage.500 Gy was recommended as suitable dosage for irradiation mutagenesis of mat rush.
Oxidative Metabolism Involved in Non-Targeted Effects Induced by Proton Radiation in Intact Arabidopsis Seeds.

Abstract:Non-targeted effects induced by ionizing radiation have been demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo. Previously, we have also demonstrated the existence of non-targeted effects in intact Arabidopsis seeds following low-energy heavy-ion radiation. In the present study, 6.5 MeV protons with 8 × 10(11) ions/cm(2) and 2 × 10(11) ions/cm(2) fluence respectively were used to irradiate non-shielded or partial-shielded Arabidopsis seeds to further explore the mechanisms which regulate in vivo non-targeted effects and to investigate the difference between damage caused by non-targeted effects and direct irradiation. Results showed that excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) are present in the non-irradiated part of the partially irradiated samples, indicating that in vivo non-targeted effects can promote the generation of excess metabolic ROS in the non-irradiated shoot apical meristem/root apical meristem cells. Furthermore, pretreatment with 0.5% ROS scavenger dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or 0.02 mM reactive nitrogen species (RNS) scavenger 2-4-carboxyphenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (cPTIO) significantly suppresses the non-targeted effects in the partially irradiated samples, while in the whole-body irradiated samples, the cPTIO pretreatment has no effect. On the other hand using antioxidant enzyme assays, superoxide dismutase activity was found to increase for partial irradiated samples and decrease for the whole-body exposed seeds. Taken together, these results implicate that damage caused by non-targeted effects is different from that induced by direct irradiation in vivo. Metabolic products such as ROS and RNS are involved in the in vivo non-targeted effects.

Abstract:Introduction: Heavy ion beam is a novel approach for crop mutagenesis with the advantage of high energy transfer line density and low repair effect after injury, however, little investigation on the biological effect on plant was performed. 50 Gy irradiation significantly stimulated the growth of Arabidopsis seedlings, as indicated by an increase in root and biomass, while 200 Gy irradiation significantly inhibited the growth of seedlings, causing a visible decrease in plant growth. Methods: The Arabidopsis seeds were irradiated by 12C6+. Monte Carlo simulations were used to calculate the damage to seeds and particle trajectories by ion implantation. The seed epidermis received SEM detection and changes in its organic composition were detected using FTIR. Evidence of ROS and antioxidant systems were analyzed. RNA-seq and qPCR were used to detect changes in seedling transcript levels. Results and discussion: Monte Carlo simulations revealed that high-dose irradiation causes various damage. Evidence of ROS and antioxidant systems implies that the emergence of phenotypes in plant cells may be associated with oxidative stress. Transcriptomic analysis of the seedlings demonstrated that 170 DEGs were present in the 50 Gy and 200 Gy groups and GO enrichment indicated that they were mainly associated with stress resistance and cell wall homeostasis. Further GO enrichment of DEGs unique to 50 Gy and 200 Gy revealed 58 50Gy-exclusive DEGs were enriched in response to oxidative stress and jasmonic acid entries, while 435 200 Gy-exclusive DEGs were enriched in relation to oxidative stress, organic cyclic compounds, and salicylic acid. This investigation advances our insight into the biological effects of heavy ion irradiation and the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:In order to investigate the biological effects of heavy ion radiation at low doses and the different radiosensitivities of growing and non-growing plants, rice at different lift stages (dry seed, wet seed and seedling) were exposed to carbon ions at doses of 0.02, 0.2, 2 and 20 Gy. Radiobiological effects on survival, root growth and mitotic activity, as well as the induction of chromosome aberrations in root meristem, were observed. The results show that radiation exposure induces a stimulatory response at lower dose and an inhibitory response at higher dose on the mitotic activity of wet seeds and seedlings. Cytogenetic damages are induced in both seeds and seedlings by carbon ion radiation at doses as low as 0.02 Gy. Compared with seedlings, seeds are more resistant to the lethal damage and the growth rate damage by high doses of carbon ions, but are more sensitive to cytogenetic damage by low doses of irradiation. Different types of radiation induced chromosome aberrations are observed between seeds and seedlings. Based on these results, the relationships between low dose heavy ion-induced biological effects and the biological materials are discussed.

Abstract:MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a family of small non-coding RNAs, which play significant roles in regulating development and stress responses in plant. As an excellent model organism for studying the effects of environmental stress, rice has been used to assess the damage of the space radiation environment for decades. Heavy-ions radiation show higher relative biological effectiveness compared to other cosmic-rays radiation. To identify the specific miRNAs that underlie biological effects of heavy-ion radiation, the germinated seeds of rice were exposed to 1 Gy, 10 Gy and 20 Gy dose of C-12 heavy-ion radiation, respectively. Analysis of phenotype indicated that 20 Gy dose of heavy-ion radiation was the semi-lethal dose of rice seedling. The microarray of mu paraflo (TM) chip was employed to monitor the expression profiles of miRNAs in rice (Oryza saliva) under 20 Gy dose of radiation stress. miR164a, miR164c, miR164d and miR156a-j were identified as heavy-ion radiation-induced miRNAs. miR164 and miR156 family were increased in all three exposed samples by using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-RCP). As targets of miR156 and miR164, SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING-LIKE (SPL) transcription factors and NAM/ATAF/CUC (NAC) transcription factors expression were down-regulated correlating with an up-regulated level of the regulated miRNAs. Since SPL transcription factors and NAC transcription factors regulated growth and development of plant, we used 2-dimension electrophoresis (2-DE) gel to analyze changes of functional proteins in 20 Gy exposed samples. It was evident that both the height and survival rates of seedlings were markedly decreased. The abundance of some developmentally regulated proteins was also changed. To our knowledge, this study is the first to report heavy-ion radiation stress responsive miRNAs in plant. Moreover, our findings are important to understand the molecular mechanism of space biology. Bystander/Abscopal Effects Induced in Intact Arabidopsis Seeds by Low-Energy Heavy-Ion Radiation

Abstract:To date, radiation-induced bystander effects have been observed largely in in vitro single-cell systems; verification of both the effects and the mechanisms in multicellular systems in vivo is important. Previously we showed that bystander/abscopal effects can be induced by irradiating the shoot apical meristem cells in Arabidopsis embryos. In this study, we investigated the in vivo effects induced by 30 keV Ar-40 ions in intact Arabidopsis seeds and traced the postembryonic development of both irradiated and nonirradiated shoot apical meristem and root apical meristem cells. Since the range of 30 keV 40Ar ions in water is about 0.07 mu m, which is less than the distance from the testa to shoot apical meristem and root apical meristem in Arabidopsis seeds (about 100 mu m), the incident low-energy heavy ions generally stop in the proximal surface. Our results showed that, after the 30 keV Ar-40-ion irradiation of shielded and nonshielded Arabidopsis seeds at a fluence of 1.5 X 10(17) ions/cm(2), short- and long-term postembryonic development, including germination, root hair differentiation, primary root elongation, lateral root initiation and survival, was significantly inhibited. Since shoot apical meristem and root apical meristem cells were not damaged directly by radiation, the results suggested that a damage signal(s) is transferred from the irradiated cells to shoot apical meristem and root apical meristem cells and causes the ultimate developmental alterations, indicating that long-distance bystander/abscopal effects exist in the intact seed. A further study of mechanisms showed that the effects are associated with either enhanced generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or decreased auxin-dependent transcription in postembryonic development. Treatment with the ROS scavenger dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or synthetic auxin 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) can significantly reverse both the alterations in postembryonic development and auxin-dependent transcription, suggesting that ROS and auxin-dependent transcription processes play essential roles in the low-energy heavy-ion radiation-induced long-distance bystander/abscopal effects in the intact organism. Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the biological effects of radiation damage induced at different depths of a plant seed and to investigate the difference in radiation response between dry seeds and water-imbibed seeds to the same type of radiation.Materials and methods: Arabidopsis seeds of the wild-type Columbia ecotype were used in our experiments. Dry or water-imbibed Arabidopsis seeds were irradiated with 1.1 MeV, 2.6 MeV or 6.5 MeV protons (H+). For comparison, 30 keV nitrogen ions (N+) were also used to irradiate dry Arabidopsis seeds. The germination and survival rates of the seeds were measured after each irradiation.Results: After irradiation with 2.6 MeV H+ and 6.5 MeV H+, the fluence-response curves for germination and survival had distinct shoulders and then survival was reduced rapidly with increasing fluence. 2.6 MeV H+ was more effective than 6.5 MeV H+ in inhibiting germination and survival and water-imbibed seeds were more sensitive to the 6.5 MeV H+ irradiation than dry seeds. For 1.1 MeV H+ the germination and survival rates were reduced gradually and an intermediate plateau emerged for germination, which was similar to that observed for survival following 30 keV N+ irradiation. One of the key morphologic malformations, the multi-SAM ( shoot apical meristem), was observed both for dry and water-imbibed seeds after all proton irradiations and for the dry seeds after 30 keV N+ irradiation.Conclusions: Radiation-induced damage produced at different ranges in Arabidopsis seeds results in different fluence-response curves with water-imbibed seeds being more sensitive to proton irradiation than dry seeds. As well as the shoot apical meristem (SAM) being the primary target for irradiation, there exists a secondary target around the SAM that also contributes to the radiation response.
Effects of Ketoprofen on Rice Seedlings: Insights from Photosynthesis, Antioxidative Stress, Gene Expression Patterns, and Integrated Biomarker Response Analysis

Abstract:Pharmacologically active compounds found in reclaimed wastewater irrigation or animal manure fertilizers pose potential risks for agriculture. The mechanism underlying the effects of ketoprofen on rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings was investigated. The results showed that low concentrations (0.5 mg L-1) of ketoprofen slightly stimulate growth of rice seedlings, while high concentrations can significantly inhibit growth by reducing biomass and causing damage to roots. Ketoprofen affects photosynthetic pigment content (Chla, Chlb, and carotenoids) and chlorophyll synthesis gene (HEMA, HEMG, CHLD, CHLG, CHLM, and CAO) expression. Fluorescence parameters such as minimum fluorescence (F-0), maximum fluorescence (F-m), variable fluorescence (F-v), potential photosynthetic capacity (F-v/F-0), maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (F-v/F-m), electron transfer rate (ETR), and Y(II), Y(NPQ), Y(NO) values were affected, showing photosynthetic electron transfer was blocked. Active oxygen radical (O-2(center dot)- and H2O2), malondialdehyde and proline content increased. Superoxide dismutase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase activities, glutathione content and antioxidant-related gene (FSD1, MSD1, CSD1, CSD2, CAT1, CAT2, CAT3, APX1, APX2) expression were induced. Higher integrated biomarker response values of eight oxidative stress response indexes were obtained at higher ketoprofen concentrations. Ultrastructure observation showed that ketoprofen causes cell structure damage, chloroplast swelling, increase in starch granules, and reduction in organelles. This study provides some suggested toxicological mechanisms and biological response indicators in rice due to stress from pharmacologically active compounds. (c) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Mutagenic Effects of Heavy-Ion Radiation in Plants

Abstract:Genetic and developmental effects of heavy ions in maize and rice were investigated. Heavy particles with various charges and energies were accelerated at the BEVALAC. The frequency of occurence of white-yellow stripes on leaves of plants developed from irradiated maize seeds increased linearly with dose, and high-LET heavy charged particles, e.g., neon, argon, and iron, were 2–12 times as effective as gamma rays in inducing this type of mutation. The effectiveness of high-LET heavy ion in (1) inhibiting rice seedling growth, (2) reducing plant fertility, (3) inducing chromosome aberration and micronuclei in root tip cells and pollen mother cells of the first generation plants developed from exposed seeds, and (4) inducing mutation in the second generation, were greater than that of low-LET gamma rays. All effects observed were dose-dependent; however, there appeared to be an optimal range of doses for inducing certain types of mutation, for example, for argon ions (400 MeV/u) at 90–100 Gy, several valuable mutant lines with favorable characters, such as semidwarf, early maturity and high yield ability, were obtained. Experimental results suggest that the potential application of heavy ions in crop improvement is promising. RFLP analysis of two semidwarf mutants induced by argon particles revealed that large DNA alterations might be involved in these mutants.

Abstract:Atmospheric pressure cold plasma (APCP) holds great potential as an efficient, economical and eco-friendly approach for improving crop production. Although APCP-induced plant growth promotion is undisputedly attributed to the reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS), how these RONS regulate the intracellular redox state and plant growth is still largely unknown. This study systematically investigates the regulation mechanism of APCP-generated RONS on intracellular redox homeostasis in Arabidopsis thaliana seedling by measuring the RONS compositions in APCP-treated solutions and intracellular RONS and antioxidants in Arabidopsis seedlings. The results show that APCP exhibited a dual effect (stimulation or inhibition) on Arabidopsis seedling growth dependent on the treatment time. APCP-generated RONS in liquids increased in a time-dependent manner, leading to an increase of conductivity and oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and decrease of pH. APCP caused an enrichment of intracellular RONS and most of them increased with APCP treatment time. Meanwhile, APCP treatment accelerated malondialdehyde (MDA) generation, and the level of intracellular antioxidants were enhanced by low-dose APCP treatment while decreased at high doses. The results of correlation analysis showed that the extracellular RONS produced by APCP were positively correlated with the intracellular RONS and negatively correlated with the antioxidants. These results demonstrate that the improved antioxidant capacity induced by moderate APCP-generated RONS plays an important role in the growth promotion of Arabidopsis seedlings, which may be a promising alternative for fertilizers in agricultural production.

Biological Response of Arabidopsis Seed to MeV Proton Irradiation at Different Region of Its Embryo

Abstract:The water saturated Arabidopsis seeds were irradiated with protons in air. The ion energy is from 1.1MeV to 6.5MeV. According to TRIM simulation, the damaged region of the seed induced by the incident ions is near the surface region of the embryo, half of the embryo and the whole embryo, respectively. The protons with high energy can damage the shoot apical meristem(SAM) in the embryo while the protons with low energy cannot. The ion fluence used in this experiment was in the range of 4×10 9 to 1×10 14 ions/cm 2 . The experimental results showed that both the germination and survival rates decrease while increasing ion fluence, and the fluence-response curve for different damaged region of the embryo has different characters. Besides SAM, which is generally considered as the main radiobiological target, the existence of a secondary target besides SAM is proposed in this paper.
Regulation of Photosynthetic Performance and Antioxidant Capacity by 60co Γ-Irradiation in Zizania Latifolia Plants

Abstract:The aim of the present work was to investigate the photosynthetic performance and antioxidant enzyme activities in response to γ-irradiation of an aquatic plant Zizania latifolia. The Z. latifolia seedlings at 6-leaf stage were exposed to 25, 50 and 100 Gy of γ rays from a (60)Co source. The growth parameters, chlorophyll contents, photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, antioxidant enzyme activities and antioxidant contents were examined at 1-5 weeks post-irradiation (WPI). The results showed that plant height, leaf number and tiller (branch close to ground) number were significantly suppressed by 50 and 100 Gy irradiation at 5, 3-5 and 4-5 WPI, respectively, but they were not significantly different from control by 25 Gy irradiation. Chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll contents were also found to be significantly decreased by irradiation. The net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) and transpiration rate (Tr) generally declined in a dose-dependent manner. As for the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm), actual photochemical efficiency of PSII (Φ(PSII)) and photochemical quenching (qP) were observed to be significantly decreased compared to the control at 3 WPI, while non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) significantly increased by 100 Gy. γ-irradiation induced substantial increase in MDA content, ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity, reduced ascorbate (AsA) content and reduced glutathione (GSH) content, suggesting a protective mechanism of Z. latifolia plant against oxidative stress when exposed to γ-irradiation.

Abstract:Energetic particles exist ubiquitously and cause varied biological effects such as DNA strand breaks, lipid peroxidation, protein modification, cell apoptosis or death. An emerging biotechnology based on ion-beam technique has been developed to serve as an effective tool for mutation breeding of crops and microbes. In order to improve the effectiveness of ion-beam biotechnology for mutation breeding, it is indispensible to gain a better understanding of the mechanism of the interactions between the energetic ions and biological systems which is still elusive. A new trend is to conduct more comprehensive research which is based on micro-scaled observation of the changes of the cellular structures and compositions under the interactions. For this purpose, advanced synchrotron FTIR (s-FTIR) microscopy was employed to monitor the cellular changes of single fungal hyphae under irradiation of α-particles from 241Am. Intracellular contents of ROS, MDA, GSSG/GSH and activities of CAT and SOD were measured via biochemical assay. Ion-irradiation on Rhizopus oryzae causes localized vacuolation, autolysis of cell wall and membrane, lipid peroxidation, DNA damage and conformational changes of proteins, which have been clearly revealed by the s-FTIR microspectroscopy. The different changes of cell viability, SOD and CAT activities can be explained by the ROS-involved chemical reactions. Evidently, the elevated level of ROS in hyphal cells upon irradiation plays the key role in the caused biological effect. This study demonstrates that s-FTIR microspectroscopy is an effective tool to study the damage of fungal hyphae caused by ionizing radiation and it facilitates the exploit of the mechanism for the interactions between the energetic ions and biological systems.
Energy related germination and survival rates of water-imbibed Arabidopsis seeds irradiated with protons

Abstract:In order to investigate the influence of ion energy on the germination and survival rates, water-imbibed Arabidopsis seeds were irradiated with protons in atmosphere. The ion fluence used in this experiment was in the range of 4×109–1×1014ions/cm2. The ion energy is from 1.1MeV to 6.5MeV. According to the structure of the seed and TRIM simulation, the ions with the energy of 6.5MeV can irradiate the shoot apical meristem directly whereas the ions with the energy of 1.1MeV cannot. The results showed that both the germination and survival rates decrease while increasing the ion fluence, and the fluence–respond curve for each energy has different character. Besides the shoot apical meristem (SAM), which is generally considered as the main radiobiological target, the existence of a secondary target around SAM is proposed in this paper.
Phytotoxicity and the molecular response in yttrium oxide nanoparticle–treated Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings

Abstract:Due to the widespread application of rare earth oxide nanoparticles in various fields, their release into the environment is inevitable, and their potential toxicity and ecological impact have become a concern. Yttrium oxide nanoparticles are important rare earth oxide nanoparticles; however, their impact on plants and the molecular mechanism underlying their influence on plant growth and development are unclear. In this study, we found that yttrium oxide nanoparticles at concentrations exceeding 2 mM significantly inhibited the growth of Arabidopsis seedlings. Using Arabidopsis marker lines for auxin signaling, we found that the application of yttrium oxide nanoparticles resulted in disordered auxin signaling in root cells. Auxin signaling in the cells of the quiescent center and columella stem cells decreased, while auxin signaling in the cells of the stele was enhanced. In addition, trypan blue staining showed that yttrium oxide nanoparticles induced root cell death. Transcriptome analysis showed that the nanoparticles specifically inhibited the expression of lignin synthesis–related genes, activated the MAPK signaling pathway, and enhanced the ethylene and abscisic acid signaling pathways in plants. This study demonstrates the phytotoxicity of yttrium oxide nanoparticles at the molecular level in Arabidopsis , and it provides a new perspective on how plants respond to rare earth oxide stress.

Abstract:Effect of low-energy ion irradiation on plasma membrane permeability has been investigated by using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy of spin probe technique. The investigated system is plumule cells of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seeds implanted by 30 keV N+ ions. ESR spectra indicated that plasmalemma perme-lead to gradual increase in plasmalemma permeability of the plumule cells. The possible factors relevant to the change sin membrane permeability are discussed in relation to the changes in the physical state and chemical nature of membranes.
Targeted Irradiation Of Shoot Apical Meristern Of Arabidopsis Embryos Induces Long-Distance Bystander/Abscopal Effects

Abstract:Bystander effects induced by low-dose ionizing radiation have been shown to occur widely in many cell types and may have a significant impact on radiation risk assessment. Although the region of radiation damage is known to be much greater than the initial target volume irradiated, it remains to be seen whether this response is limited to the specific organ irradiated, spans a limited region of the body, or even covers the whole body of the target. To determine whether long-distance bystander/abscopal effects exist in whole organisms and to clarify the problem of intercellular communication, in the present study a specific cell group, the shoot apical meristem in Arabidopsis embryo, was irradiated with a defined number of protons and examined for root development postirradiation. The results showed that after direct damage to the shoot apical meristern from ion traversals, root hair differentiation, primary root elongation and lateral root initiation were all inhibited significantly in postembryonic development, suggesting that radiation-induced long-distance bystander/abscopal responses might exist in the whole organism. To further scrutinize the mechanism(s) underlying these inhibitory effects, a DR5-GUS transgenic Arabidopsis was used. The results showed that accumulation of the reporter GUS gene transcript in irradiated shoot apical meristem embryos decreased in the postembryonic development. Treatment with either 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, a synthetic plant auxin, or DMSO, a effective reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger, could rescue the reporter GUS enzyme accumulation and the length of primary root in irradiated shoot apical meristern embryos, indicating that ROS or probably the ROS related auxin and auxin-dependent transcription process may be involved in radiation-induced long-distance bystander/abscopal effects. Abstract:Plants are a major source of bio based materials, and their productivity is significantly impacted by environmental adversities with the continuous deterioration of the environment. The disruption of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and scavenging balance is a common consequence of various abiotic stresses in plants, resulting in the excessive accumulation of ROS. However, it is crucial to acknowledging the dual role of ROS, acting both as harmful substances and signaling molecules. ROS can interact with membrane proteins, initiating a chain reaction of membrane lipid peroxidation. This process leads to a decrease in membrane lipid unsaturation and fluidity, as well as an increase in membrane permeability. Inhibited enzyme activity even lead to loss of protein function, caused DNA damage and mutations, blocked DNA replication and transcription, eventually leading to cell death. This can result in significant reductions in crop yield and biomass in bio based agricultural production. ROS also played vital role in signal molecule transduction in the process of plant resistance to stress, and worked in concert with other signal molecules to induce the stress resistance genes’ expression and enhance plant resistance. Hereto, scavenging mechanism for ROS in plants is of the essence to regulate the concentration of ROS, thus determining which role ROS play. The thermal dissipation of excess light energy effectively avoids ROS production, and the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant defense systems in plants work cooperatively to clear excessive ROS. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the production pathway, detrimental effects, scavenging mechanism and signal transduction of ROS in plants under abiotic stress.

Abstract:Heat stress has become a major threat to plant growth and development. The objective of the present study was to investigate any changes in physio-biochemical and transcriptional seedling responses to heat stress caused by pre-stress irradiation of Arabidopsis seeds with a carbon ion beam. The seeds were exposed to a series of doses (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 Gray [Gy]) before being exposed to heat stress (40 °C). The results showed that 50-Gy carbon ion beam irradiation exhibited stimulatory effects, compared with seedlings grown from non-irradiated seeds, on germination index, root length, and fresh weight in heat-stressed Arabidopsis seedlings. Moreover, the accumulation rates of superoxide anion radicals, hydroxyl radicals, hydrogen peroxide, and malondialdehyde concentrations were significantly lower in stressed seedlings grown from irradiated seeds. Furthermore, antioxidant enzyme activities and non-enzymatic antioxidant concentrations in heat-stressed seedlings grown from irradiated seed were significantly higher than in the control seedlings grown from non-irradiated seedlings. Notably, the transcription levels of several genes related to heat stress response were differentially regulated in response to heat stress in seedlings grown from seed irradiated with low-dose carbon ion beams. Collectively, this study suggests that low-dose carbon ion beam irradiation can modulate the physiological responses and regulate heat-signaling genes involved in mitigating heat stress during Arabidopsis seedling growth.
