Abstract:We reformulate the soft-collinear effective theory which includes the collinear quark and soft gluons. The quark form factor is used to prove that SCET$_{\rm II}$ reproduces the IR physics of the full theory. We give a factorization proof in deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering by use of the position space formulation.

Abstract:We review soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), and apply it to discuss quark electromagnetic form factor, then present the resumed transverse momentum distribution of Higgs-boson production via gluon fusion under this framework, where we derive a relatively full differential formula in transverse momentum $Q_T$ space like one which have been obtained by Dokshitzer-D'Yanov-Troyan (DDT) in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). Furthermore, our above result can be generalized to even higher order. Comparing our formula with the integral formula of Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) in impact parameter $b$ space, we establish the relationship between the anomalous dimension of operator together with matching coefficients in SCET and the well-known coefficients A, B and C in pQCD, which also provides a relative natural and convenient method to treat the similar questions as ones of CSS, such as the matching in nonperturbative region. Finally, the joint resummation method in SCET is briefly discussed.

Abstract:We study collinear and soft singularities in perturbative quantum gravity by constructing an effective field theory similar to soft-collinear effective theory for QCD (SCET). We find that the soft sector exhibits factorization properties similar to those of SCET. The collinear sector is, however, quite different. While the leading-power collinear effective Lagrangian is trivial, the presence of the metric field $h_{++}$ with negative scaling dimension allows for collinear divergences in loop diagrams with couplings to non-collinear sources. We provide a compact proof of the well-known fact that there are no collinear singularities in perturbative quantum gravity by demonstrating the decoupling of $h_{++}$ from the sources. We briefly discuss the connection of our approach to recent work by Akhoury et al. (Phys. Rev. D84 (2011) 104040) as well as to the Weinberg's original paper (Phys. Rev. 140 (1965) B516), where the cancellation of the collinear singularities was demonstrated for the first time in the eikonal approximation.

Abstract:We present a universal formalism for transverse momentum resummation in the view of soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), and establish the relation between our SCET formula and the well known Collins-Soper-Sterman's pQCD formula at the next-to-leading logarithmic order (NLLO). Abstract:We present how to construct a Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) for gravity at the leading and next-to-leading powers from the ground up. The soft graviton theorem and decoupling of collinear gravitons at the leading power are manifest from the outset in the effective symmetries of the theory. At the next-to-leading power, certain simple structures of amplitudes, which are completely obscure in Feynman diagrams of the full theory, are also revealed, which greatly simplifies calculations. The effective lagrangian is highly constrained by effectively multiple copies of diffeomorphism invariance that are inevitably present in gravity SCET due to mode separation, an essential ingredient of any SCET. Further explorations of effective theories of gravity with mode separation may shed light on lagrangian-level understandings of some of the surprising properties of gravitational scattering amplitudes. A gravity SCET with an appropriate inclusion of Glauber modes may serve as a powerful tool for studying gravitational scattering in the Regge limit.

Abstract:An important unresolved question in strong interaction physics concerns the parameterization of power-suppressed long-distance effects to hard processes that do not admit an operator product expansion (OPE). Recently Bauer et al. have developed an effective field theory framework that allows one to formulate the problem of soft-collinear factorization in terms of fields and operators. We extend the formulation of soft-collinear effective theory, previously worked out to leading order, to second order in a power series in the inverse of the hard scale. We give the effective Lagrangian and the expansion of “currents” that produce collinear particles in heavy quark decay. This is the first step towards a theory of power corrections to hard processes where the OPE cannot be used. We apply this framework to heavy-to-light meson transition form factors at large recoil energy.

Abstract:We derive a factorization theorem for the Higgs boson transverse momentum (p_T) and rapidity (Y) distributions at hadron colliders, using the Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), for m_h>> p_T>> \Lambda_{QCD} where m_h denotes the Higgs mass. In addition to the factorization of the various scales involved, the perturbative physics at the p_T scale is further factorized into two collinear impact-parameter Beam Functions (iBFs) and an inverse Soft Function (iSF). These newly defined functions are of a universal nature for the study of differential distributions at hadron colliders. The additional factorization of the p_T-scale physics simplifies the implementation of higher order radiative corrections in \alpha_s(p_T). We derive formulas for factorization in both momentum and impact parameter space and discuss the relationship between them. Large logarithms of the relevant scales in the problem are summed using the renormalization group equations of the effective theories. Power corrections to the factorization theorem in p_T/m_h and \Lambda_{QCD}/p_T can be systematically derived. We perform multiple consistency checks on our factorization theorem including a comparison with known fixed order QCD results. We compare the SCET factorization theorem with the Collins-Soper-Sterman approach to low-p_T resummation.

B -> K* L(+) L(-) Decay in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory

Abstract:We study the rare B decay B -> K(*)l(+)l(-) using soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). At leading power in 1/m(b), a factorization formula is obtained valid to all orders in alpha(s). For phenomenological application, we calculate the decay amplitude including order alpha(s) corrections, and resum the logarithms by evolving the matching coefficients from the hard scale O(m(b)) down to the scale root m(b)Lambda(h). The branching ratio for B -> K-* l(+)l(-) is uncertain due to the imprecise knowledge of the soft form factors zeta perpendicular to (q(2)) and zeta parallel to (q(2)). Constraining the soft form factor zeta perpendicular to(q(2)=0) from data on B -> K-*gamma yields zeta perpendicular to(q(2)=0)=0.32 +/- 0.02. Using this input, together with the light-cone sum rules to determine the q(2) -dependence of zeta perpendicular to(q(2)) and the other soft form factor zeta parallel to(q(2)), we estimate the partially integrated branching ratio in the range 1 GeV2 <= q(2) <= 7 GeV2 to be (2.92 +0.67 -0.61) x 10(-7). We discuss how to reduce the form factor related uncertainty by combining data on B -> p(->pi pi)lv(l) and B -> K-* (-> K pi)l(+)l(-). The forward-backward asymmetry is less sensitive to the input parameters. In particular, for the zero-point of the forward-backward asymmetry 16)GeV2 2 in the standard model, we get q(0)(2)=(4.07+0.16-0.13)GeV2. The scale dependence of q(0)(2) is discussed in detail.

Abstract:The factorization of amplitudes into hard, soft and collinear parts is known to be violated in situations where incoming particles are collinear to outgoing ones. This result was first derived by studying limits where noncollinear particles become collinear. We show that through an effective field theory framework with Glauber operators, these factorization-violating effects can be reproduced from an amplitude that is factorized before the splitting occurs. We confirm results at one loop, through single Glauber exchange, and at two loops, through double Glauber exchange. To approach the calculation, we begin by reviewing the importance of Glauber scaling for factorization. We show that for any situation where initial-state and final-state particles are not collinear, the Glauber contribution is entirely contained in the soft contribution. The contributions coming from Glauber operators are necessarily nonanalytic functions of external momentum, with the nonanalyticity arising from the rapidity regulator. The nonanalyticity is critical so that Glauber operators can both preserve factorization when it holds and produce factorization-violating effects when they are present.

Abstract:This chapter reviews the construction of ``soft-collinear gravity'', the effective field theory which describes the interaction of collinear and soft gravitons with matter (and themselves), to all orders in the soft-collinear power expansion, focusing on the essential concepts. Among them are an emergent soft background gauge symmetry, which lives on the light-like trajectories of energetic particles and allows for a manifestly gauge-invariant representation of the interactions in terms of a soft covariant derivative and the soft Riemann tensor, and a systematic treatment of collinear interactions, which are absent at leading power in gravity. The gravitational soft theorems are derived from soft-collinear gravity at the Lagrangian level. The symmetries of the effective theory provide a transparent explanation of why soft graviton emission is universal to sub-sub-leading power, but gauge boson emission is not and suggest a physical interpretation of the form of the universal soft factors in terms of the charges corresponding to the soft symmetries. The power counting of soft-collinear gravity further provides an understanding of the structure of loop corrections to the soft theorems.

Abstract:Radiative corrections to high-energy scattering processes were given previously in terms of universal soft and collinear functions. This paper gives the collinear functions for all standard model particles, the general form of the soft function, and explicit expressions for the soft functions for fermion-fermion scattering, longitudinal and transverse gauge boson production, single W/Z production, and associated Higgs production. An interesting subtlety in the use of the Goldstone boson equivalence theorem for longitudinal W+ production is discussed.

New Double Soft Emission Theorems

Abstract:We study the behavior of the tree-level S-matrix of a variety of theories as two particles become soft. By analogy with the recently found subleading soft theorems for gravitons and gluons, we explore subleading terms in double soft emissions. We first consider double soft scalar emissions and find subleading terms that are controlled by the angular momentum operator acting on hard particles. The order of the subleading theorems depends on the presence or not of color structures. Next we obtain a compact formula for the leading term in a double soft photon emission. The theories studied are a special Galileon, Dirac-Born-Infeld, Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar, nonlinear sigma model and Yang-Mills-Scalar. We use the recently found Cachazo-He-Yuan representation of these theories in order to give a simple proof of the leading order part of all these theorems.

Abstract:We construct "soft-collinear gravity", the effective field theory which describes the interaction of collinear and soft gravitons with matter (and themselves), to all orders in the soft-collinear power expansion. Despite the absence of collinear divergences in gravity at leading power, the construction exhibits remarkable similarities with soft-collinear effective theory of QCD (gauge fields). It reveals an emergent soft background gauge symmetry, which allows for a manifestly gauge-invariant representation of the interactions in terms of a soft covariant derivative, the soft Riemann tensor, and a covariant generalisation of the collinear light-cone gauge metric field. The gauge symmetries control both the unsuppressed collinear field components and the inherent inhomogeneity in $\lambda$ of the invariant objects to all orders, resulting in a consistent expansion.

Small-$x$ Factorization from Effective Field Theory

Abstract:We derive a factorization theorem that allows for resummation of small-$x$ logarithms by exploiting Glauber operators in the soft collinear effective field theory. Our analysis is carried out for the hadronic tensor $W^{\mu\nu}$ in deep inelastic scattering, and leads to the definition of a new gauge invariant soft function $S^{\mu\nu}$ that describes quark and gluon emission in the central region. This soft function provides a new framework for extending resummed calculations for coefficient functions to higher logarithmic orders. Our factorization also defines impact factors by universal collinear functions that are process independent, for instance being identical in small-$x$ DIS and Drell-Yan.

Abstract:Soft-collinear effective theory is generalized to include soft massless quarks in addition to collinear fields. This extension is necessary for the treatment of interactions with the soft spectator quark in a heavy meson. The power counting of the relevant fields and the construction of the effective Lagrangian are discussed at leading order in Λ/mb. Several novel effects occur in the matching of full-theory amplitudes onto effective-theory operators containing soft light quarks, such as the appearance of an intermediate mass scale and large non-localities of operators on scales of order 1/Λ. Important examples of effective-theory operators with soft light quarks are studied and their renormalization properties explored. The formalism presented here forms the basis for a systematic analysis of factorization and power corrections for any exclusive B-meson decay into light particles.

Abstract:We consider the most general form of soft and collinear factorization for hard-scattering amplitudes to all orders in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. Specifically, we present the generalization of collinear factorization to configurations with several collinear directions, where the most singular behaviour is encoded by generalized collinear splitting amplitudes that manifestly embed the breaking of strict collinear factorization in space-like collinear configurations. We also extend the analysis to the simultaneous soft-collinear factorization with multiple collinear directions and show how na\"ıve multiplicative factorization do not hold.

Abstract:Soft functions defined in terms of matrix elements of soft fields dressed by Wilson lines are central components of factorization theorems for cross sections and decay rates in collider and heavy-quark physics. While in many cases the relevant soft functions are defined in terms of gluon operators, at subleading order in power counting soft functions containing quark fields appear. We present a detailed discussion of the properties of the soft-quark soft function consisting of a quark propagator dressed by two finite-length Wilson lines connecting at one point. This function enters in the factorization theorem for the Higgs-boson decay amplitude of the h → γγ process mediated by light-quark loops. We perform the renormalization of this soft function at one-loop order, present a conjecture for its two-loop anomalous dimension and discuss solutions to its renormalization-group evolution equation in momentum space, in Laplace space and in the "diagonal space", where the evolution is strictly local in the momentum variable.
