Abstract:We retrace the first steps towards understanding neutrinos, particles predicted by Pauli in 1930 to avoid a supposed violation of time-translation symmetry. Despite the tendency to reduce the whole story to his intuition and the skill of Reines & Cowan, according to history great strides were made in thirties thanks to precious intellectual tools that combined ideas and mathematics. I refer primarily to the contribution of Fermi, who proposed in 1933 a theory in which matter particles can appear and disappear, prototypical of those at the basis of today's particle physics. This theory, despite its limitations, led physicists towards the observation of neutrinos, paved the way for further developments - e.g., it anticipated the characteristic of crossing symmetry - and had an impressive scientific legacy. We reconstruct the chain of arguments in the most accessible terms for a modern reader, emphasising the role of theoretical physics and reflecting on some alternative assessments of Fermi's contribution. A few technical remarks are collected in the appendix.

Abstract:Dawning neutron physics was more complex than one might expect. The chance that the neutron comprised a proton and an electron was diffusely taken into account after the discovery of the neutron. Moreover, uncertainties persisted about the composition of beryllium radiation until it was realized that the latter comprised both neutrons and gamma-rays. The interaction of neutrons with matter and nuclei was soon investigated. Both a spatial symmetry, a symmetry of charge, and a symmetry in the nuclear reactions soon emerged. The relation of negative beta-decay to the neutron abundance in nuclei was moreover reviewed. Positive beta-radioactivity induced by alpha-particles was eventually announced, having been foreseen some weeks before. Accelerated deutons and protons shortly afterwards revealed to be efficient in inducing radioactivity. The physics institute in Rome got ready to start research on neutrons, but apparently it only planned to go through alpha-induced radioactivity, at first. If so, it is then plausible that some new results achieved by foreign laboratories eventually bent Fermi to neutrons. Fermi's discovery of neutron-induced radioactivity is reviewed with regard to investigations then current, once more showing simplicity as a distinctive trait of Fermi's way of doing physics.

Abstract:The modern picture of the neutrino as a multiple mass highly mixed neutral particle has emerged over 40 years of study. Best known of the issues leading to this picture was the apparent loss of neutrinos coming from the sun. This article describes another piece of evidence that supports the picture; the substantial reduction of high energy muon type neutrinos observed in nature. For much of the 40 year period, before the modern picture emerged this observation was known as the "atmospheric neutrino anomaly", since as will be seen, these neutrinos originate in the Earth's atmosphere. This paper describes the discovery of the atmospheric neutrino anomaly. We explore the scientific context and motivations in the late 1970's from which this work emerged. The gradual awareness that the observations of atmospheric neutrinos were not as expected took place in the 1983-1986 period.

Abstract:The conceptual bases of Fermi's $\beta$-ray theory (at its 90th anniversary) are examined, highlighting the innovative drive and inspirational role for the progress that followed just afterwards. Moreover, the three different ideas of the neutrino born from the proposals of Pauli 1930, again Fermi 1933 and Majorana 1937 papers are discussed, emphasising the interest of the latter for current expectations.

Abstract:Over the last two decades, we have intensified our search for a ghost particle, with the hope that it would provide us with information on the darkest places of our Universe. This quest has been conducted from the deep caves of the Earth, up to the upper layers of our atmosphere, and from one Pole to another. In this review, I will summarize the odyssey of the search for astrophysical neutrinos. I will focus on the recent discoveries and technical developments that led us to the point where we stand now. I will highlight the different types of neutrino detectors, and their performances enabling the discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, and the understanding of their sources behind. Finally, I will present some possible paths to the remaining uncharted territory of the ultra-high-energy neutrino astronomy.

Abstract:The original paper describes neutrino cooling calculations in the presence of asymmetric neutrino opacities due to parity violation in strong magnetic fields. In early April, through the work of P. Arras and D. Lai at Cornell (see <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="astro-ph/9806285" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/9806285">astro-ph/9806285</a>) we became aware that the paper contains a serious flaw: although the neutrino scattering opacities depend asymmetrically on the initial and final neutrino momenta, detailed balance requires that there be no cumulative effect from multiple scatterings in the bulk interior of the proto-neutron star where local thermodynamic equilibrium applies to a good approximation. This paper was therefore withdrawn from ApJ in April. Also in April, we submitted an erratum to ApJ Lett. pointing out this error. (The erratum will appear in the July 1, 1998 issue of ApJ Lett.)

Abstract:Neutrino oscillation is discussed with emphases placed more on its conceptual aspects. After reviewing the two conventional formulations, referred to here as the same-energy prescription and the same-momentum prescription, wave packet treatments are developed for each of these two prescriptions. Both wave packets localized in space and those in time are considered, and, by invoking relativistic kinematics as well, the necessary conditions for oscillation to occur are derived, which appear to have a form more well-defined and quantitative than what have been noted before. Some phenomenological implications suggested by the wave packet treatments are briefly mentioned. Finally, as a possible third prescription, the same-velocity prescription is given.
Discussion on Neutrino Oscillation and CPT/Lorentz Invariance Violation

Abstract:Depending on deformed canonical anticommutation relations, massless neutrino oscillation based on CPT /Lorentz invariance viol ation is discussed. It is found that the deformed canonical anti-commutation relations should satisfy the condition of new Moy al product and new non standard commutation relations. Furthermore, by comparing the neutrino experimental data and the above relations, we find that the orders of magnitude of noncommutative parameters or Lorentz invariant Violation parameters $mathi t{A}$ is not self-consistent. This means that the previous studies about Lorentz invariance violation in noncommutative field theory may not naturally explain massless neutrino oscillation. In other words, it should be impossible to explain neutrino os cillation by lorentz invariance violation. This conclusion is supported by the latest atmospheric neutrinos experimental resul ts from Super-Kamiokande Collaboration, which show that no evidence of Lorentz invariance violation on atmospheric neutrinos w as observed.

Abstract:A brief review of the problem of neutrino masses and oscillations is given. In the beginning we present an early history of neutrino masses, mixing and oscillations. Then we discuss all possibilities of neutrino masses and mixing (neutrino mass terms). The phenomenology of neutrino oscillations in vacuum is considered in some details. We present also the neutrino oscillation data and the seesaw mechanism of the neutrino mass generation.

Significance of classically forbidden regions for short baseline neutrino experiments

Abstract:Classically forbidden regions ($\mathtt{CFRs}$) are common to both non-relativistic quantum mechanics, and to relativistic quantum field theory. It is known since 2001 that $\mathtt{CFR}$ contributes roughly sixteen percent of energy to the ground state of a simple harmonic oscillator (Adunas G. Z. et al., Gen. Relativ. Gravit., 33 (2001) 183). Similarly, quantum field theoretic arguments yield a non-zero amplitude for a massive particle to cross the light cone (that is, into the $\mathtt{CFR}$). The signs of these amplitudes are opposite for fermions and antifermions. This has given rise to an erroneous conclusion that amplitude to cross the lightcone is identically zero. This is true as long as a measurement does not reveal the considered object to be a particle or antiparticle. However, neutrino oscillation experiments do measure a neutrino $\nu$, or an antineutrino $\bar\nu$. Here we show that in the context of neutrino oscillations these observations have the potential to resolve various short baseline anomalies for a sufficiently light lowest mass eigenstate. In addition, we make a concrete prediction for the upcoming results to be announced later this year by JSNS$^2$.

Abstract:Recent experimental results and developments in the theoretical treatment of neutrino-nucleus interactions in the energy range of 1-10 GeV are discussed. Difficulties in extracting neutrino-nucleon cross sections from neutrino-nucleus scattering data are explained and significance of understanding nuclear effects for neutrino oscillation experiments is stressed. Detailed discussions of the status of two-body current contribution in the kinematic region dominated by quasi-elastic scattering and specific features of partonic nuclear effects in weak DIS scattering are presented.
