Abstract:We first study BPS geometries dual to half-BPS states of field theories with 32 supercharges. These field theories are N = 4 SYM on R×S3, M2 brane theory and M5 brane theory. The dynamics of the half-BPS states in N = 4 SYM is reduced to a matrix quantum mechanics, and they are characterized by droplets on the two dimensional phase space. The geometries dual to these states are specified by boundary conditions on a two-plane, which are identified as the phase space. The phase space gives unified description of half-BPS perturbative and non-perturbative excitations aboveAdS5×S. The half-BPS geometries in the M theory case are described by a Toda equation with similar but more complicated boundary conditions on a two-plane. We then study BPS geometries dual to the vacua of field theories with 16 supercharges. The first class of theory has a bosonic U(1) × SO(4) × SO(4) symmetry, they include the mass deformed M2 brane theory, D4 or M5 brane theory on S3, and intersecting NS5 brane theory. Their vacua are characterized by droplets on a cylinder or torus. The second class of theory has a SU(2|4) symmetry, they include the 0+1d plane-wave matrix model, 2+1d super Yang-Mills theory on R×S2, N = 4 Super Yang-Mills on R×S/Zk, and NS5 brane theory on R× S5. The vacua of these theories are described by electrostatic configurations with many disks under external potential. The region between disks describe NS5 brane geometries. Finally we study instanton solutions and superpotentials for the vacua of the plane-wave matrix model and 2+1d super Yang-Mills theory and discuss the emergence of the vacuum geometries.
BPS Solutions of Noncommutative Gauge Theories in Four and Eight Dimensions

Abstract:We study the 1/4 BPS equations in the eight dimensional noncommutative Yang-Mills theory found by Bak, Lee and Park. We explicitly construct some solutions of the 1/4 BPS equations using the noncommutative version of the ADHM-like construction in eight dimensions. From the calculation of topological charges, we show that our solutions can be interpreted as the bound states of the $D0$-$D4$-$D8$ with a $B$-field. We also discuss the structure of the moduli space of the 1/4 BPS solutions and determine the metric of the moduli space of the U(2) one-instanton in four and eight dimensions.

Abstract:We study classical solutions of N=4 super Yang–Mills theories that are invariant under 1/4 of the supersymmetry generators. Expressions for the mass and electric charge of the configurations are derived as functions on the monopole moduli space. These functions also provide a method of determining the number of normalisable bosonic zero modes.

Abstract:This paper focuses on supergravity duals of BPS states in N = 4 super YangMills. In order to describe these duals, we begin with a sequence of breathing mode reductions of IIB supergravity: first on S-3, then S-3 x S-1, and finally on S-3 X S-1 X CP1. We then follow with a complete supersymmetry analysis, yielding 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 BPS configurations, respectively (where in the last step we take the Hopf fibration of S-3). The 1/8 BPS geometries, which have an S-3 isometry and are time-fibered over a six-dimensional base, are determined by solving a non-linear equation for the Kdhler metric on the base. Similarly, the 1/4 BPS configurations have an S-3 X S-1 isometry and a four-dimensional base, whose Kdhler metric obeys another non-linear, Monge-Ampere type equation. Despite the non-linearity of the problem, we develop a universal bubbling AdS description of these geometries by focusing on the boundary conditions which ensure their regularity. In the 1/8 BPS case, we find that the S-3 cycle shrinks to zero size on a five-dimensional locus inside the six-dimensional base. Enforcing regularity of the full solution requires that the interior of a smooth, generally disconnected five-dimensional surface be removed from the base. The AdS(5) X S-5 ground state corresponds to excising the interior of an S-5, while the 1/8 BPS excitations correspond to deformations (including topology change) of the S-5 and/or the excision of additional droplets from the base. In the case of 1/4 BPS configurations, by enforcing regularity conditions, we identify three-dimensional surfaces inside the four-dimensional base which separate the regions where the S-3 shrinks to zero size from those where the S' shrinks. We discuss a large class of examples to show the emergence of a universal bubbling AdS picture for all 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 BPS geometries.
On $\frac18$-BPS black holes and the chiral algebra of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

Abstract:We investigate the existence of $\frac18$-BPS black hole microstates in the $\mathfrak{su}(1,1|2)$ sector of Type IIB string theory on $\mathrm{AdS}_5 \times \mathrm{S}^5$. As will be explained, these states are in one-to-one correspondence with the Schur operators comprising the chiral algebra of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills, and a conjecture of Beem et al. implies that the Schur sector only contains graviton operators and hence $\frac18$-BPS black holes do not exist. We scrutinize this conjecture from multiple angles. Concerning the macroscopic counting, we rigorously prove that the flavored Schur index cannot exhibit black hole entropy growth, and provide numerical evidence that the flavored MacDonald index also does not exhibit such growth. Next, we go beyond counting to examine the algebraic structure, beginning by presenting evidence for the well-definedness of the super-$\mathcal{W}$ algebra of Beem et al., then using modular differential equations to argue for an upper bound on the lightest non-graviton operator if existent, and finally performing a systematic construction of cohomologies to recover only gravitons. Along the way, we clarify key aspects of the 4d/2d correspondence using the formalism of the holomorphic topological twist.

Abstract:We study the 1/4 BPS geometries corresponding to the 1/4 BPS operators of the dual gauge theory side, in $ \mathcal{N} = {4} $ SYM. By analyzing asymptotic structure and flux integration of the geometries, we present a mapping between droplet configurations arising from the geometries and Young diagrams of the Brauer algebra. In particular, the integer k classifying the operators in the Brauer basis is mapped to the mixing between the two angular directions.

Abstract:BPS states in N=4 supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theories in four dimensions can be represented as planar string networks with ends lying on D3-branes. We introduce several protected indices which capture information on the spectrum and various quantum numbers of these states, give their wall crossing formula and describe how using the wall crossing formula we can compute all the indices at all points in the moduli space.

On the BPS sector in AdS_3/CFT_2 Holography

Abstract:The BPS sector in AdS_3/CFT_2 duality has been fertile ground for the exploration of gauge/gravity duality, from the match between black hole entropy and the CFT elliptic genus to the construction of large families of geometrical microstates and the identification of the corresponding states in the CFT. Worldsheet methods provide a tool to further explore the relation between string theory in the bulk and corresponding CFT quantities. We show how to match individual BPS strings to their counterparts in the symmetric product orbifold CFT. In the process, we find an exact match between known constructions of microstate geometries and condensates of BPS supergraviton strings, and discuss their role in the broader collection of BPS states. In particular, we explore how microstate geometries develop singularities; and how string theory resolves these singularities through the appearance of ``tensionless'' string dynamics, which is the continuation of structures found in the weak-coupling CFT into the strongly coupled regime described by string theory in the bulk. We argue that such ``tensionless'' strings are responsible for black hole microstructure in the bulk description.

Abstract:We consider all 1/2 BPS excitations of $AdS \times S$ configurations in both type IIB string theory and M-theory. In the dual field theories these excitations are described by free fermions. Configurations which are dual to arbitrary droplets of free fermions in phase space correspond to smooth geometries with no horizons. In fact, the ten dimensional geometry contains a special two dimensional plane which can be identified with the phase space of the free fermion system. The topology of the resulting geometries depends only on the topology of the collection of droplets on this plane. These solutions also give a very explicit realization of the geometric transitions between branes and fluxes. We also describe all 1/2 BPS excitations of plane wave geometries. The problem of finding the explicit geometries is reduced to solving a Laplace (or Toda) equation with simple boundary conditions. We present a large class of explicit solutions. In addition, we are led to a rather general class of $AdS_5$ compactifications of M-theory preserving ${\cal N} =2$ superconformal symmetry. We also find smooth geometries that correspond to various vacua of the maximally supersymmetric mass-deformed M2 brane theory. Finally, we present a smooth 1/2 BPS solution of seven dimensional gauged supergravity corresponding to a condensate of one of the charged scalars.

Abstract:We consider the maximal supersymmetric pure Yang-Mills theories on six and eight dimensional space. We determine, in a systematic way, all the possible fractions of supersymmetry preserved by the BPS states and present the corresponding `self-dual' BPS equations. In six dimensions the intrinsic one has 1/4 supersymmetry, while in eight dimensions, 1/16, 2/16, ..., 6/16. We apply our results to some explicit BPS configurations of finite or infinite energy on commutative or noncommutative spaces.

Abstract:We study N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories coupled with higher derivative chiral models in four dimensions in the off-shell superfield formalism. We solve the equation of motion for the auxiliary fields and find two distinct on-shell structures of the Lagrangian that we call the canonical and noncanonical branches characterized by zero and nonzero auxiliary fields, respectively. We classify Bogomol’nyi-Prasado-Sommerfield (BPS) states of the models in Minkowski and Euclidean spaces. In Minkowski space, we find Abelian and non-Abelian vortices, vortex lumps (or gauged lumps with fractional lump charges) as 1/2 BPS states in the canonical branch, and higher derivative generalization of vortices and vortex-(BPS)baby Skyrmions (or gauged BPS baby Skyrmions with fractional baby Skyrme charges) as 1/4 BPS states in the noncanonical branch. In four-dimensional Euclidean space, we find Yang-Mills instantons trapped inside a non-Abelian vortex, intersecting vortices, and intersecting vortex-(BPS)baby Skyrmions as 1/4 BPS states in the canonical branch but no BPS states in the noncanonical branch other than those in the Minkowski space.

The 1/4-BPS building blocks of brane interactions

Abstract:We study, from the perspective of supersymmetry and space-time Killing spinors, the local brane densities involved in 1/4-BPS intersecting brane systems. In particular, we classify the possible local brane structures that have maximal (16) supersymmetries in 1/4-BPS intersecting brane backgrounds. Applied to BPS black holes, this classification reveals the allowed local microstructure for pure microstates. We further use these structures with local 16 supersymmetries as building blocks to generalise to 1/8-BPS systems. Moreover, we give examples of 1/8-BPS black holes for which the local supersymmetries are compatible with the combination of different entropy-generating effects from brane interaction. Finally, applying our classification to BPS domain walls, we illustrate how our formalism may possibly describe the local picture of the Hanany-Witten effect.

Abstract:We describe a universal element in the group algebra of symmetric groups, whose characters provides the counting of quarter and eighth BPS states at weak coupling in N=4 SYM, refined according to representations of the global symmetry group. A related projector acting on the Hilbert space of the free theory is used to construct the matrix of two-point functions of the states annihilated by the one-loop dilatation operator, at finite N or in the large N limit. The matrix is given simply in terms of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of symmetric groups and dimensions of U(N) representations. It is expected, by non-renormalization theorems, to contain observables at strong coupling. Using the stringy exclusion principle, we interpret a class of its eigenvalues and eigenvectors in terms of giant gravitons. We also give a formula for the action of the one-loop dilatation operator on the orthogonal basis of the free theory, which is manifestly covariant under the global symmetry.

Abstract:We investigate the problem of counting 1/16 BPS operators in N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory at weak coupling. We present the complete set of 1/16 BPS operators in the infinite N limit, which agrees with the counting of free BPS multi-graviton states in the gravity dual AdS5xS5. Further, we conjecture that all 1/16 BPS operators in N=4 SYM are of the multi-graviton form, and give numerical evidences for this conjecture. We discuss the implication of our conjecture and the seeming failure in reproducing the entropy of large 1/16 BPS black holes in AdS5.

Abstract:We develop a systematic and efficient method of counting single-trace and multi-trace BPS operators with two supercharges, for world-volume gauge theories of N D-brane probes for both N ->infinity and finite N. The techniques are applicable to generic singularities, orbifold, toric, non-toric, complete intersections, et cetera, even to geometries whose precise field theory duals are not yet known. The so-called " plethystic exponential " provides a simple bridge between (1) the defining equation of the Calabi-Yau, (2) the generating function of single-trace BPS operators and (3) the generating function of multitrace operators. Mathematically, fascinating and intricate inter-relations between gauge theory, algebraic geometry, combinatorics and number theory exhibit themselves in the form of plethystics and syzygies.

Abstract:A connection between the gauge fixed dynamics of protected operators in superconformal Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions and Calogero systems is established. This connection generalizes the free Fermion description of the chiral primary operators of the gauge theory formed out of a single complex scalar to more general operators. In particular, a detailed analysis of protected operators charged under an su(1|1)contained in psu(2,2|4) is carried out and a class of operators is identified, whose dynamics is described by the rational super-Calogero model. These results are generalized to arbitrary BPS operators charged under an su(2|3) of the superconformal algebra. Analysis of the non-local symmetries of the super-Calogero model is also carried out, and it is shown that symmetry for a large class of protected operators is a contraction of the corresponding Yangian algebra to a loop algebra.

Abstract:We study the BPS spectra of N=2 complete quantum field theories in four dimensions. For examples that can be described by a pair of M5 branes on a punctured Riemann surface we explain how triangulations of the surface fix a BPS quiver and superpotential for the theory. The BPS spectrum can then be determined by solving the quantum mechanics problem encoded by the quiver. By analyzing the structure of this quantum mechanics we show that all asymptotically free examples, Argyres-Douglas models, and theories defined by punctured spheres and tori have a chamber with finitely many BPS states. In all such cases we determine the spectrum.

Abstract:We study N=(2,2) supersymmetric abelian gauge theories in two dimensions. The exact BPS spectrum of these models is shown to coincide with the spectrum of massive hypermultiplets of certain N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions. A special case of these results involves a surprising connection between four-dimensional N=2 SQCD with N colours and N_{f}>N flavours at the root of the baryonic Higgs branch and the supersymmetric CP^{2N-N_{f}-1} sigma-model in two dimensions. This correspondence implies a new prediction for the strong-coupling spectrum of the four-dimensional theory.

Abstract:We explore the relationship between four-dimensional N=2 quantum field theories and their associated BPS quivers. For a wide class of theories including super-Yang-Mills theories, Argyres-Douglas models, and theories defined by M5-branes on punctured Riemann surfaces, there exists a quiver which implicitly characterizes the field theory. We study various aspects of this correspondence including the quiver interpretation of flavor symmetries, gauging, decoupling limits, and field theory dualities. In general a given quiver describes only a patch of the moduli space of the field theory, and a key role is played by quantum mechanical dualities, encoded by quiver mutations, which relate distinct quivers valid in different patches. Analyzing the consistency conditions imposed on the spectrum by these dualities results in a powerful and novel mutation method for determining the BPS states. We apply our method to determine the BPS spectrum in a wide class of examples, including the strong coupling spectrum of super-Yang-Mills with an ADE gauge group and fundamental matter, and trinion theories defined by M5-branes on spheres with three punctures.
