Abstract:Electron acceleration by transversely echelon phase-modulated (EPM) circularly polarized (CP) intense laser pulse is investigated. Solution of the relativistic electron equations of motion shows that the CP EPM light wave structure can disrupt the harmonic response of a trapped electron not only in the transverse direction but also in the direction of laser propagation. In each laser cycle, there can be a net gain in the electron's transverse momentum, which is promptly converted into the forward direction by the Lorentz force. As a result, the electron can be trapped and accelerated in the favorable phase of the laser for a rather long time. Its momentum gain then accumulates and can eventually reach high levels. It is also found that with the CP EPM laser, the net acceleration of the electron is not sensitive to its initial position and velocity relative to the phase of the laser fields, so that such a laser can also be useful for accelerating thermal electron bunches to high energies.

Abstract:By three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation, we study electron acceleration by tightly focusing a few-cycle radially polarized laser onto near-critical-density plasmas. Laser ponderomotive force first pushes electrons into the target, forming a compressed electron layer and leaving behind a charge-separation field. Together with the strong longitudinal electric field of this radially polarized light, the charge-separation field accelerates the electrons backward and injects them into laser fields. The reflected light continuously accelerates these injected electrons by its longitudinal field. Simulations show that a tight quasi-monoenergetic electron bunch at 15 MeV is generated within a few micrometers.

Abstract:Dipolarization fronts, earthward propagating structures in the Earth's magnetotail characterized by sharp enhancements of the northward magnetic field, are important sites of energy conversion from electromagnetic to particle energy. The large energy conversion rate observed at these fronts suggests significant particle acceleration and heating, which powers the ambient current sheet to generate plasma flows in the magnetotail plasma sheet and its boundary layer. Using a simple model of ion reflection at the dipolarization front, we estimate ion energy enhancement in the ambient plasma sheet and find it to be comparable with typical electromagnetic energy converted at the front. Validated by dipolarization front statistics from THEMIS (Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms) observations, this result suggests the important contribution of ion reflection to the energy budgets of dipolarization fronts during their earthward propagation.

Abstract:Within dipolarization fronts (DFs) in the Earth's magnetotail, significant magnetic energy is converted to plasma energy, and a significant portion of the electrons and ions therein are accelerated to suprathermal energies. The mechanism that produces these suprathermal particles while simultaneously reducing magnetic field energy is poorly understood, however. We use two‐dimensional particle‐in‐cell simulations to explore this process in conventional flux bundle‐type DFs, which are formed by single X line reconnection and connected to the Earth, and in newly proposed flux rope‐type DFs, which are formed and bracketed by two X lines. In flux bundle‐type DFs, electrons are betatron accelerated near the Bz peak, and ions are energized through reflection at the front. In flux rope‐type DFs, most suprathermal electrons and ions are confined to the flux rope's magnetic structure and are accelerated through repeated reflections at the structure's two ends.

Abstract:Taking advantage of multipoint observations from a Cluster-like Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) probe configuration repeated in three events, we study pitch-angle distributions (PAD) of lower energy (0.2-keV) electrons and omnidirectional energy-time spectrograms of higher energy (30-500 keV) electrons observed at and near dipolarization fronts in the plasma sheet. Recent observations have shown that dipolarization fronts in the plasma sheet provide an impulsive electric field suggested to cause electron energization and dispersionless injections. Increase and decrease in energetic electron flux are equally probable at the fronts, however. Our case studies demonstrate increased energetic electron flux in the front's central region but decreased flux on its dusk side, where diverted plasma flow forms a vortex. An electric field associated with this vortex causes the electron flux decrease. We also find that shorter-term energetic flux decreases, often observed before injections, coincide with a dip in the northward magnetic field ahead of the front. We attribute these decreases to particle energy loss via the inverse betatron effect. Our case studies reveal that pancake-type (maximum at 90 degrees pitch angle) and cigar-type (maxima at 0 and 180 degrees) PADs coexist at the same front. Our data analysis suggests that energetic electron PADs are mainly pancake type near the neutral sheet (vertical bar B-x vertical bar < 5 nt) and mainly cigar type at vertical bar B-x vertical bar > 10 nt. These results, to be confirmed in statistical studies, provide important constraints for further modeling of electron energization and transport toward the inner magnetosphere. Abstract:Particle energization and energy dissipation in electromagnetic environments are longstanding topics of intensive research in space, laboratory, and astrophysical plasmas. One challenge is to understand these conversion processes at smaller and smaller spatial/temporal scales. In this Letter, with very high cadence measurements of particle distributions from the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft, we report evidence of evolution of an identified microscale (i.e., electron gyro-scale) magnetic cavity structure and reveal within it a unique energization process that does not adhere to prevailing adiabatic invariance theory. Our finding indicates that this process is largely energy dependent, and can accelerate/decelerate charged particles inside the trapping region during their gyromotion, clearly altering the particle distribution.

Abstract:In this paper, the particle acceleration processes around magnetotail dipolarization fronts (DFs) were reviewed. We summarize the spacecraft observations (including Cluster, THEMIS, MMS) and numerical simulations (including MHD, test-particle, hybrid, LSK, PIC) of these processes. Specifically, we (1) introduce the properties of DFs at MHD scale, ion scale, and electron scale, (2) review the properties of suprathermal electrons with particular focus on the pitch-angle distributions, (3) define the particle-acceleration process and distinguish it from the particle-heating process, (4) identify the particle-acceleration process from spacecraft measurements of energy fluxes, and (5) quantify the acceleration efficiency and compare it with other processes in the magnetosphere (e.g., magnetic reconnection and radiation-belt acceleration processes). We focus on both the acceleration of electrons and ions (including light ions and heavy ions). Regarding electron acceleration, we introduce Fermi, betatron, and non-adiabatic acceleration mechanisms; regarding ion acceleration, we present Fermi, betatron, reflection, resonance, and non-adiabatic acceleration mechanisms. We also discuss the unsolved problems and open questions relevant to this topic, and suggest directions for future studies.

Abstract:In this paper, with the in-situ observations from the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) probes we report a wavy dipolarization front (DF) event, where the DF has different magnetic structures and electron distributions at different \(y\) positions in the Geocentric Solar Magnetospheric (GSM) coordinates. At \(y \sim2.1R_{E}\) (\(R_{E}\) is the radius of Earth), the DF has a relatively simple structure, which is similar to that of a conventional DF. At \(y \sim3.0R_{E}\), the DF is revealed to have a multiple DF structure, where the plasma exhibits a vortex flow. Such a wavy DF could be the results of the interchange instability. The different structure of such a wavy DF at different sites has a great effect on electron acceleration. Fermi acceleration can occur at the site of the DF with a simple or multiple DF structure, while betatron acceleration as a local process has the contribution to energetic electrons only at the site of the DF with a simple structure.

Abstract:[1] We present case studies of THEMIS multipoint observations of ion distributions in the magnetotail plasma sheet at various locations upstream of earthward-propagating dipolarization fronts. Observations made near the neutral sheet show a characteristic signature, enhancements of earthward-moving ion fluxes about 30 s before dipolarization front arrival. In previous studies, this signature has been well explained as front-reflected ions confined to a region characterized by their gyroradii over the background Bz field that coexist with the ambient population. However, at higher latitudes near the plasma sheet boundary layer, observations suggest that earthward-moving ions appear a few minutes earlier than at the central plasma sheet, indicating that the ions reflected at the same dipolarization front could access farther toward the Earth at higher latitudes. These observed phenomena, as also stated in our companion paper, are associated with transient intensifications of proton auroral brightness, which suggests a direct connection between magnetospheric and ionospheric signatures during geomagnetic disturbed conditions. We carry out numerical simulations and theoretical analysis of ion dynamics to interpret and reproduce these observations, to improve our understanding of interactions between earthward-propagating fronts and the ambient plasma in the near-Earth magnetotail, and to establish the proton auroral effects of dipolarization fronts.
Electron Acceleration Behind the Dipolarization Fronts in the Magnetotail

Abstract:Summary form only given. We investigate the electron acceleration behind dipolarization fronts (DFs) in the magnetotail from -25 RE to -10RE through the examination of the energetic electron energy flux (>30 keV) with the observations from THEMIS satellites. Statistical results of 133 DF events are presented based on the dataset from January to April of the years 2008 and 2009. As the DFs propagate earthward, the acceleration of energetic electrons behind the DFs is found to take place over several RE along the tail. The increase in energetic electron energy flux can reach 2~4 orders of magnitude. The dominant acceleration mechanisms are different in the mid-tail (XGSM ≤-15RE) and the near-Earth region (-15<;XGSM ≤-10RE). In the mid-tail, the majority of DF events show that the dominant electron acceleration mechanism is betatron acceleration. In the near-Earth region, betatron acceleration is dominant in ~46% DF events while Fermi acceleration is dominant in ~39% DF events.
On The Current Density Reduction Ahead Of Dipolarization Fronts

Abstract:During their earthward propagation, dipolarization fronts (DFs) interact with the ambient plasma sheet on kinetic scales. The interaction region is important to the front's structure, propagation, and regional closure of the current system. However, the physics in this region, especially of its current system, is poorly understood. We present Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) observations of the interaction region between DFs and the ambient plasma sheet at x-12R(E) downtail; these observations show that the current density ahead of the DFs is significantly reduced near the neutral plane. We use a two-dimensional particle-in-cell model to simulate the current density reduction ahead of DFs and investigate the physical mechanism that causes it: Ion reflection and acceleration at the front cause positive charge density to build up. The resultant electrostatic field, E-z, is directed away from the neutral plane. The positive cross-tail E(z)xB(x) drift of electrons (which remain magnetized) does not affect demagnetized ions. This electron-ion decoupling results in a dawnward cross-field current carried by electrons that reduces the cross-tail current ahead of the approaching front.

Abstract:We report on six dipolarization fronts (DFs) embedded in fast earthward flows detected by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission during a substorm event on 23 July 2017. We analyzed Ohm's law for each event and found that ions are mostly decoupled from the magnetic field by Hall fields. However, the electron pressure gradient term is also contributing to the ion decoupling and likely responsible for an electron decoupling at DF. We also analyzed the energy conversion process and found that the energy in the spacecraft frame is transferred from the electromagnetic field to the plasma ( J · E > 0) ahead or at the DF, whereas it is the opposite ( J · E < 0) behind the front. This reversal is mainly due to a local reversal of the cross-tail current indicating a substructure of the DF. In the fluid frame, we found that the energy is mostly transferred from the plasma to the electromagnetic field ( J · E ′ < 0) and should contribute to the deceleration of the fast flow. However, we show that the energy conversion process is not homogeneous at the electron scales due to electric field fluctuations likely related to lower-hybrid drift waves. Our results suggest that the role of DF in the global energy cycle of the magnetosphere still deserves more investigation. In particular, statistical studies on DF are required to be carried out with caution due to these electron scale substructures.

Abstract:A large-scale two-dimensional (2-D) particle-in-cell simulation is performed in this paper to investigate electron acceleration in the dipolarization front (DF) region during magnetic reconnection. It is found that the DF is mainly driven by an ion outflow which also generates a positive potential region behind the DF. The DF propagates with an almost constant speed and gets growing, while the electrons in the DF region can be highly energized in the perpendicular direction due to betatron acceleration. For the first time, we reveal that there exists a velocity threshold; only the electrons below the threshold can be trapped by the parallel electric potential in the DF region and then energized by betatron acceleration.

Abstract:We discuss results of a superposed epoch analysis of dipolarization fronts, rapid (delta t < 30 s), high-amplitude (delta B-z > 10 nT) increases in the northward magnetic field component, observed during six Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) conjunction events. All six fronts propagated earthward; time delays at multiple probes were used to determine their propagation velocity. We define typical magnetic and electric field and plasma parameter variations during dipolarization front crossings and estimate their characteristic gradient scales. The study reveals (1) a rapid 50% decrease in plasma density and ion pressure, (2) a factor of 2-3 increase in high-energy (30-200 keV) electron flux and electron temperature, and (3) transient enhancements of similar to 5 mV/m in duskward and earthward electric field components. Gradient scales of magnetic field, plasma density, and particle flux were found to be comparable to the ion thermal gyroradius. Current densities associated with the B-z increase are, on average, 20 nA/m(2), 5-7 times larger than the current density in the cross-tail current sheet. Because j . E > 0, the dipolarization fronts are kinetic-scale dissipative regions with Joule heating rates of 10% of the total bursty bulk flow energy.

Abstract:The collision dynamics of the fast ion population in ultra-dense DT plasmas are investigated and analyzed within the framework of the relativistic Fokker-Planck equation. The Green function expansing on the spherical harmonics is used to express the solution of the equation. With the Green function we can calculate the stopping time, the ion range, the straggling range, and the mean transverse dispersion of different kinds of ions in plasmas. Compared to the previous ways of studying the movement of ions in plasmas, we not only calculate the straggling range without the approximation that the energy loss of the ions is much smaller than the energy of the ions, but we also calculate the stopping time and the mean transverse dispersion. This calculation is important for the experimental study of high energy density plasmas and fast ignition of laser fusion.

Abstract:Dipolarizing flux bundles transport magnetic flux to the inner and dayside magnetosphere, heat the plasma sheet, and provide a seed population to the radiation belt. The magnetic perturbation ahead of them, often referred to as a dipolarization front (DF), is asymmetric with a small B-z dip followed by a sharp B-z enhancement. The B-z dip is thought to be generated from dawnward currents carried by DF-reflected ions; after reflection, these earthward moving ions gyrate clockwise and contribute to dawnward diamagnetic currents ahead of the front. Using observations of hundreds of DFs, we investigate this hypothesis. We find that the depth of the B-z dip as a function of the front azimuth depends on DF propagation speed and ambient plasma density. These statistical signatures support the hypothesis that the B-z dip is caused by ion reflection and suggest that secondary currents carried by these reflected ions can reshape the front significantly.

Abstract:We report the temporal evolution of electron pitch angle distributions behind the dipolarization front (DF) in the Earth's magnetotail with observations of the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) spacecraft. Taking advantage of multipoint observations from the THEMIS mission lined up in space, we study pitch angle distributions of energetic electrons behind the DF during two typical events. Pancake, rolling-pin, and cigar distributions are observed sequentially during the acceleration process. Based on Liouville's theorem, it is revealed that pancake distribution is dominantly formed by betatron acceleration in the early stage, and rolling-pin distribution is generated by both dominant Fermi and weak betatron acceleration in the transition stage, while cigar distribution is formed by Fermi acceleration finally. Our results provide comprehensive in situ observational evidence of the temporal evolution of electron acceleration behind the DF during propagation.
