Abstract:Microsized SiO<i>x</i> has been vigorously investigated as an advanced anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. However, its practical application is seriously hampered by its huge volume variation during the repeated (de)lithiation process, which destroys the microparticle structure and results in rapid capacity fading. Herein, we propose the usage of <i>trans</i>-difluoroethylene carbonate (DFEC) as an electrolyte additive to maintain the structural integrity of microsized SiO<i>x</i> with a uniform carbon layer (SiO<i>x</i>@C). Compared with ethylene carbonate and fluoroethylene carbonate, DFEC has lower lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy and higher reduction potential, which is easily reduced and promotes the <i>in situ</i> formation of a more stable LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the surface of anode materials. The LiF-rich SEI exhibits enhanced mechanical rigidity and ionic conductivity, thus enabling the microsized SiO<i>x</i>@C anodes' excellent lithium storage stability and high average Coulombic efficiency. The Supporting Information is available free of charge at <a class="ext-link" href="/doi/10.1021/acsami.1c05379?goto=supporting-info">https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsami.1c05379</a>.The values of ionic conductivities of EC, FEC, and DFEC-based electrolytes, SEM and TEM images of SiO<i>x</i>@C microparticles, PSD curve and TG analysis profiles of SiO<i>x</i>@C microparticles, XRD patterns of SiO<i>x</i>@C microparticles, the long-term cycling performance of graphite and SiO<i>x</i>@C composite anodes, SEM image of surface morphology for the SiO<i>x</i>@C electrode, cross-sectional SEM images of the SiO<i>x</i>@C anodes before and after 200 cycles, SEM images of the SiO<i>x</i>@C anode after 200 cycles in the three electrolytes, charge and discharge profiles of Li||SiO<i>x</i>@C at different current densities, initial discharge profiles of Li||SiO<i>x</i>@C with a current density of 0.01 C and corresponding differential capacity (d<i>Q</i>/d<i>V</i>) profiles, TEM images of SiO<i>x</i>@C anodes after the first cycle, and TEM image and the corresponding EDS elemental mapping images of C, O, Si, and F of the SiO<i>x</i>@C anode in the three electrolytes after 200 cycles (<a class="ext-link" href="/doi/suppl/10.1021/acsami.1c05379/suppl_file/am1c05379_si_001.pdf">PDF</a>)This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
