Abstract:Magnetically responsive soft smart materials have garnered significant academic attention due to their flexibility, remote controllability, and reconfigurability. However, traditional soft materials used in the construction of these magnetically responsive systems typically exhibit low density and poor thermal and electrical conductivities. These limitations result in suboptimal performance in applications such as medical radiography, high-performance electronic devices, and thermal management. To address these challenges, magnetically responsive gallium-based liquid metals have emerged as promising alternatives. In this review, we summarize the methodologies for achieving magnetically responsive liquid metals, including the integration of magnetic agents into the liquid metal matrix and the utilization of induced Lorentz forces. We then provide a comprehensive discussion of the key physicochemical properties of these materials and the factors influencing them. Additionally, we explore the advanced and potential applications of magnetically responsive liquid metals. Finally, we discuss the current challenges in this field and present an outlook on future developments and research directions.

Abstract:To date, liquid metals have been widely applied in many fields such as electronics, mechanical engineering and energy. In the last decade, with a better understanding of the physicochemical properties such as low viscosity, good fluidity, high thermal/electrical conductivity and good biocompatibility, gallium and gallium-based low-melting-point (near or below physiological temperature) alloys have attracted considerable attention in bio-related applications. This tutorial review introduces the common performances of liquid metals, highlights their featured properties, as well as summarizes various state-of-the-art bio-applications involving carriers for drug delivery, molecular imaging, cancer therapy and biomedical devices. Challenges for the clinical translation of liquid metals are also discussed.

Abstract:Bismuth (Bi) has been prompted many investigations into the development of next-generation energy storage systems on account of its unique physicochemical properties. Although there are still some challenges, the application of metallic Bi-based materials in the field of energy storage still has good prospects. Herein, we systematically review the application and development of metallic Bi-based anode in lithium ion batteries and beyond-lithium ion batteries. The reaction mechanism, modification methodologies and their relationship with electrochemical performance are discussed in detail. Additionally, owing to the unique physicochemical properties of Bi and Bi-based alloys, some innovative investigations of metallic Bi-based materials in alkali metal anode modification and sulfur cathodes are systematically summarized for the first time. Following the obtained insights, the main unsolved challenges and research directions are pointed out on the research trend and potential applications of the Bi-based materials in various energy storage fields in the future.

Abstract:Recently, room‐temperature liquid metals have attracted increasing attention from researchers owing to their excellent material properties. Systematic interpretation of the potential toxicity issues involved is essential for a wide range of applications, especially in the biomedical and healthcare fields. However, even with the exponential growth of related studies, investigation of the toxicological impact and possible hazards of liquid metals to organisms is still in its infancy. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the current frontier of knowledge on liquid metal toxicology and biocompatibility in different environments. Based on recent studies, this review focuses on Ga and Bi‐based alloys in different states. It is necessary to evaluate their toxicity considering the rapid increase in research and utilization of such liquid metal composites. Finally, we discuss existing challenges and provide suggestions for further investigation of liquid metal toxicology to clarify the toxicological mechanisms and provide strategies to avoid adverse effects. In addition to resolving the doubts of public concern about the toxicity of liquid metals, this review is expected to promote the healthy and sustainable development of liquid metal‐based materials and their use in diverse areas, especially those related to health care. In this review, a comprehensive overview of the properties of individual Bi material systems and their use in a range of applications is provided. Bismuth(Bi)‐based materials have gained considerable attention in recent decades for use in a diverse range of sustainable energy and environmental applications due to their low toxicity and eco‐friendliness. Bi materials are widely employed in electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices, exhibiting excellent catalytic and non‐catalytic performance, as well as CO2/N2 reduction and water treatment systems. A variety of Bi materials, including its oxides, chalcogenides, oxyhalides, bismuthates, and other composites, have been developed for understanding their physicochemical properties. In this review, a comprehensive overview of the properties of individual Bi material systems and their use in a range of applications is provided. This review highlights the implementation of novel strategies to modify Bi materials based on morphological and facet control, doping/defect inclusion, and composite/heterojunction formation. The factors affecting the development of different classes of Bi materials and how their control differs between individual Bi compounds are also described. In particular, the development process for these material systems, their mass production, and related challenges are considered. Thus, the key components in Bi compounds are compared in terms of their properties, design, and applications. Finally, the future potential and challenges associated with Bi complexes are presented as a pathway for new innovations.

Abstract:Bismuth-containing compounds comprise a relatively unexplored materials system that is expected to offer many unique and desirable optoelectronic, thermoelectric, and electronic properties for innovative device applications. This book serves as a platform for knowledge sharing and dissemination of the latest advances in novel areas of bismuth-containing compounds for materials and devices, and provides a comprehensive introduction to those new to this growing field. Coverage of bismides includes theoretical considerations, epitaxial growth, characterization, and materials properties (optical, electrical, and structural). In addition to the well-studied area of highly mismatched Bi-alloys, the book covers emerging topics such as topological insulators and ferroelectric materials. Built upon fundamental science, the book is intended to stimulate interest in developing new classes of semiconductor and thermoelectric materials that exploit the properties of Bismuth. Abstract:Low‐melting‐point metals, including liquid metals, possess exceptional physical and chemical properties like conductivity, surface tension, and biocompatibility. The melting point significantly influences their properties and applications. This review summarizes recent studies on gallium‐ and bismuth‐based alloys, discussing properties, applications in flexible electronics and biomedicine, and addressing opportunities and challenges. It aims to advance low‐melting‐point materials, particularly in biomedicine. In recent years, low‐melting‐point metals including liquid metals, exhibiting outstanding physical and chemical properties such as excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, high surface tension, and biocompatibility, have garnered increasing attention from researchers. The melting point of such metals profoundly influences their properties and determines their range of applications, and comprehending the characteristics and properties of low‐melting‐point metals is crucial for their future applications. Although studies related to liquid metals are growing exponentially in particular, reports exploring the properties and applications of low‐melting‐point metals from the perspective of the melting point are still in their early stages. This review aims to comprehensively summarize the key properties and relevant applications of current low‐melting‐point metals described in recent studies, focusing on gallium‐ and bismuth‐based metal alloys. In addition, this review discusses the opportunities and challenges associated with low‐melting‐point metals, and it is anticipated that this review will contribute to the advancement of low‐melting‐point materials in the fields of flexible electronics and biomedicine, particularly for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Conventional biomaterials, such as metals, polymers, composites and ceramics, may not work well when facing certain tough medical challenges. As an alternative, body-temperature liquid metals, such as gallium, or its alloys are recently emerging as new generation functional materials which display many unconventional properties superior to traditional biomaterials, i.e. high fluidity, excellent electrical and thermal conductivities, good biocompatibility, sufficient radiopacity, controllable behaviour, easy manufacture and low cost. This article aims to outline a new biomedical category: liquid metal biomaterials. Representative applications enabled by liquid metal biomaterials from both therapeutic and diagnostic aspects were reviewed. Furthermore, related efforts and perspective for future development of employing liquid metals to resolve modern biomedical tough issues were discussed. With continuous technical progresses and fundamental discoveries, liquid metals are expected to offer more and more outstanding merits as a new class of biomaterials which are promising a generalised way towards resolving biomedical challenges.

Abstract:Liquid metals (LMs) have emerged as a new class of functional materials with attractive characteristics of low melting points and metal properties. Remarkable features, such as biocompatibility, injectability, plasticity, conductivity, and shape transformability, have rendered them as excellent candidates to tackle challenging biomedical issues, such as tumor clinics, tissue engineering, and even nerve connection. Scaling down the droplet size offers more opportunities in surface engineering and functionalization, thus providing broad biomedical scenarios expanding from drug delivery, enhanced bioheat transfer, tumor therapeutics, and bioelectronics to nanorobots. Despite in its infancy stage, a summary about the advancement of LM biomedical nanomaterials is urgently needed. This review aims to highlight the advantages of gallium‐based LM nanoparticles enabled nano‐biomedicine, to summarize the recent synthesis methods with diverse LM compositions, structures and surface modifications, and to introduce their typical state‐of‐the‐art biomedical applications. Challenges and opportunities are also discussed in the end.

Abstract:In recent years, bismuth-based semiconductors have become a research hotspot in the new semiconductor field due to their unique optical and electronic properties. In addition, due to the simple fabrication process and controllable shape and size of these materials, they are widely used in the fields of optoelectronic devices, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, biomedicine, etc. However, the current review papers on bismuth-based semiconductors mainly focus on the field of photocatalysis, while the applications of other fields are rarely reported, and the comprehensive summary of optical and electronic properties and applications of bismuth-based semiconductors are also lacking. Therefore, in this review, a variety of typical bismuth-based semiconductor materials are introduced in detail, including their lattice structures, optical and electronic properties and modification studies. In addition, the relationship between the bulk composition and photoelectric properties is analyzed, which will promote the future research on how to systematically control the photoelectric properties of bismuth-based materials. Secondly, the preparation methods of different bismuth-based semiconductor materials and applications in the field of optoelectronics are evaluated. Finally, the challenges faced by bismuth-based semiconductor materials in academic studies and industrial applications are pointed out, and the future work is prospected. In recent years, bismuth-based semiconductors have become a research hotspot in the new semiconductor field due to their unique optical and electronic properties.

Abstract:This review is focused on the basic properties, production, functionalization, cytotoxicity, and biomedical applications of liquid metal nanoparticles (LMNPs), with a focus on particles of the size ranging from tens to hundreds of nanometers. Applications, including cancer therapy, medical imaging, and pathogen treatment are discussed. LMNPs share similar properties to other metals, such as photothermal conversion ability and a propensity to form surface oxides. Compared to many other metals, especially mercury, the cytotoxicity of gallium is low and is considered by many reports to be safe when applied in vivo. Recent advances in exploring different grafting molecules are reported herein, as surface functionalization is essential to enhance photothermal therapeutic effects of LMNPs or to facilitate drug delivery. This review also outlines properties of LMNPs that can be exploited in making medical imaging contrast agents, ion channel regulators, and anti-pathogenic agents. Finally, a foresight is offered, exemplifying underexplored knowledge and highlighting the research challenges faced by LMNP science and technology in expanding into applications potentially yielding clinical advances.

Abstract:<p>Bismuth (Bi), as a nontoxic and inexpensive diamagnetic heavy metal, has recently been utilized for the preparation of a variety of nanomaterials, such as nanoparticles, nanowires, nanotubes, nanosheets, etc., with a tunable bandgap, unique structure, excellent physicochemical properties, and compositional features for versatile properties, such as near‐infrared absorbance, high X‐ray attenuation coefficient, excellent photothermal conversion efficiency, and a long circulation half‐life. These features have endowed mono‐elemental Bi nanomaterials with desirable performances for electronics/optoelectronics, energy storage and conversion, catalysis, nonlinear photonics, sensors, biomedical applications, etc. This review summarizes the controlled synthesis of mono‐elemental Bi nanomaterials with different shapes and sizes, highlights the state‐of‐the‐art progress of the desired applications of mono‐elemental Bi nanomaterials, and presents some personal insights on the challenges and future opportunities in this research area. It is hoped that the controllable manipulation techniques of Bi nanomaterials, along with their unique properties, can shed light on the next‐generation devices based on Bi nanostructures and Bi‐related nanomaterials.</p>

Abstract:Liquid metals (LMs) such as gallium or bismuth based alloys are emerging as new functional materials with rather unique physical or chemical behaviors. They are generally safe and non‐toxic, have high boiling points, reflectivities, good thermal and electrical conductivities, intrinsic flexibility, fluidity, self‐healing capability and remain in liquid state at room temperature. However, the further applications of LMs are limited by their single‐color physical appearance, such as working in the situations with imposed stringent requirements for color and aesthetics. Recently, the color and fluorescence functionalization of liquid metals have overcome many conventional technical bottlenecks and opened significant potential for emerging applications in numerous fields owing to their rich colors and unique liquid structure. In this review, the recent developments in the optical properties, color and fluorescence effects of liquid metals are comprehensively investigated. The synthesis, structures, properties, chromogenic mechanisms, and potential photoelectric applications of colorful liquid metals are systematically analyzed and compared. The effectiveness and characteristics of colorful liquid metals induced by coating, mixing, compounding, surface modification, external stimuli are provided, aiming to establish a potential system for the synthesis and practices of colorful liquid metals. Finally, the challenges and prospects in the field have also been identified and explained to preferably guide further scientific and technical researches in the coming time . Abstract:Liquid metals (LMs) as emerging biomaterials possess unique advantages including their favorable biosafety, high fluidity and excellent electrical and thermal conductivities, thus providing a unique platform for a wide range of biomedical applications ranging from drug delivery, tumor therapy, and bioimaging to biosensors. The structural design and functionalization of LMs endow them with enhanced functions such as enhanced targeting ability and stimuli responsiveness, enabling them to achieve better and even multifunctional synergistic therapeutic effects. Herein, the advantages of LMs in biomedicine are presented. The design of LM‐based biomaterials with different scales ranging from micro/nano‐scale to macro‐scale and various components is explored in‐depth to promote the understanding of structure‐property relationships, guiding their performance optimization and applications. Furthermore, the related advanced progress in the development of LM‐based biomaterials in biomedicine is summarized. In this paper, the basic concepts, properties, and behaviors of liquid metals under different conditions are introduced, and the latest advances in their synthesis methods and application fields are discussed. The development status of liquid metal in science and industry is also introduced. The latest research progress of liquid metals is systematically reviewed, and the potential and application prospect of liquid metals in materials science, engineering, and electronic technology are revealed. The research scope covers the wide application of liquid metals in nanotechnology, materials engineering, electronic technology, energy, and other fields, as well as the latest application cases of liquid metals in flexible electronic devices, sensors, catalysts, energy storage, and other fields. At the same time, the core disputes and problems to be solved in the field of liquid metals are discussed. Through the comments on liquid metals, we hope to provide reference and guidance for researchers and promote the further development in the field of liquid metals. Abstract:Bismuth-based metal-organic frameworks (Bi-MOFs) and their derivatives are a class of emerging promising coordination polymers with intriguing properties and functions. However, this specific type of MOFs is still in its infancy stage, which is limited by the flexible coordination environment and low solubility of Bi(III) cation. Herein, this review aims at providing a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in Bi-MOFs and their derivatives, focusing on the three aspects: synthesis, structure, applications. The solution chemistry for Bi(III) cation is discussed firstly. The diverse structure types of Bi-MOFs with different organic ligands are fully discussed and the formation of Bi-MOFs derivatives is highlighted in the following section. Then, the applications of Bi-MOFs and their derivatives are elaborated, including catalysis, energy storage, biomedical imaging, drug delivery, fluorescence sensing, adsorption and separation. Finally, referencing these studies, the insights and perspectives are suggested in terms of future research directions. Abstract:Bi-based materials have been receiving considerable attention as promising electrode materials in the fields of electrochemical energy storage, due to their excellent physical and chemical properties. However, they suffer from large volume expansion and sluggish reaction kinetics, leading to rapid capacity degradation and inferior rate performance. Accordingly, effective strategies including morphology design, microstructure optimization, and carbon/metals modification are used to achieve enhanced performance. Herein, we summarize the recent advances in design and fabrication of favorable structural features of Bi-based materials and their composites to realize enhanced performance in electrochemical energy storage applications, including lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, other advanced batteries, and supercapacitors. Their structures and theoretical studies are first discussed. Subsequently, the relationships between nano/micro structures, synthetic methods, and electrochemical performance of Bi-based materials are systematically summarized. Moreover, the advanced in situ characterization techniques for understanding the reaction mechanisms of Bi-based materials are emphasized. Ultimately, the challenges and opportunities for future development of Bi-based nano/micromaterials toward high-performance electrochemical energy storage devices are proposed.

Perspectives in emerging bismuth electrochemistry

Abstract:Bi-based electrode materials with a low redox potential of Bi3+/Bi and high theoretical specific capacity have attracted great attention in alkali metal ion batteries, aqueous batteries, hybrid capacitors, and others. In this review, we overview the structures and detailed synthesis strategies of the Bi-based active materials, and also summarize the theoretical analysis of reaction mechanism and the way to improve electrochemical performance in detail. In addition, the major challenges and perspectives of Bi-based electrode materials are also pointed out, and offer a guideline for other Bi-based electrodes in the future.

Abstract:As new generation functional materials, the recently emerging low‐melting liquid metals have displayed many unconventional properties superior to traditional materials. Various methods, such as alloying, oxidizing, adding metals, or non‐metallic materials and so on, have been developed to prepare desirable functional materials based on the gallium or more other metals. These methods could not only change the form of the materials, but also endow the original liquid metals with rather diversified performances, which have further expanded the application range of the low‐melting liquid metals to meet various needs. This article aims to review and summarize on the fabrication methods, characteristics, and applications of the functional liquid metal materials. Furthermore, the future outlook in this field, including challenges, routes, and related efforts, has also been illustrated and interpreted.
