Abstract:The demand for electromagnetic wave attenuation has dramatically increased in consideration of electromagnetic pollution and the development of communication devices. Polymer based electromagnetic wave (EMW) attenuation composites have more diverse structures and properties than metal shielding materials, which meet the requirements of preparing lightweight and efficient electromagnetic loss materials. Polymers has advantage in structure designed and mechanical strength adjusted, it can be applied to electromagnetic wave loss matrix. However, most of these polymer-based electromagnetic wave attenuation composites are high filled, resulting in limitation of mechanical properties, electrical conductivities, and stabilities. For the current electromagnetic wave attenuation composites, we focus on the designed and synthesis approaches of conductive polymer-based composites to improve EMW loss, the EMW attenuation mechanism and performance were evaluated. Finally, the corresponding challenges and some perspectives are in the field of research. It is hoped to provide an outlook on the design and development of the composites in a wider range of applications.

Abstract:Abstract With the widespread application of electronic communication technology, the resulting electromagnetic radiation pollution has been significantly increased. Metal matrix electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials have disadvantages such as high density, easy corrosion, difficult processing and high price, etc. Polymer matrix EMI shielding composites possess light weight, corrosion resistance and easy processing. However, the current polymer matrix composites present relatively low electrical conductivity and poor EMI shielding performance. This review firstly discusses the key concept, loss mechanism and test method of EMI shielding. Then the current development status of EMI shielding materials is summarized, and the research progress of polymer matrix EMI shielding composites with different structures is illustrated, especially for their preparation methods and evaluation. Finally, the corresponding key scientific and technical problems are proposed, and their development trend is also prospected. "Image missing"

Design on the Microwave Absorber with Lattice of 3D Composite Element for X-band Application

Abstract:Composites with excellent microwave absorption performance provide with an effective solution to satisfy the urgent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for the electronic products. As a typical composite, carbon black filled polymer has been a potential candidate for practical applications due to its low costs and light weight. In this work, the microwave absorbing properties of carbon black/epoxy resin composites were investigated in the frequency range of 8.2 ~ 12.4GHz. In particular, a new manufacturing process was used to fabricate the waveguide sample with various filler concentration, such as 1.5%, 4.5%, 7.5%, 12% by weight. Then the permittivity of those samples was measured by transmission and reflection method with X-band waveguide. Based on the measured results, a microwave absorber with lattice of cylinder element was designed to improve the microwave absorption performance compared to Dallenbach layer composed of these composites. The effects of various geometric parameters were clarified and full-wave numerical simulation results show that the proposed lattice structure exhibits an absorptivity higher than 96% in the frequency regions of 8.2 ~ 12.4GHz. The feature of low costs, lightweight and excellent absorbing performance make the absorber have great potential in the area of EMC.

Abstract:Since the development of advanced electromagnetic absorption materials is highly critical in telecommunication and stealth technology, both fabrication technology and structure design are significant in achieving broadband and strong absorption performance. For understanding the effects of fabrication technology and structure design on performance, in this work two fabrication methods, including the traditional mixing and novel framework method, are demonstrated to investigate the dispersion capability of reduced graphene oxide in polymeric matrices. Moreover, artificial structure designs, including the layers of unit cells, top-layer shape and top-layer materials, are used for further optimizing the microwave absorption performance. A performance comparison suggests that fabrication via framework technology is more favorable to obtain an ideal impedance match in the composites. Additionally, the meta-structural design coupled with the related mechanism for substantially broadening the absorption bandwidth has been systematically discussed. The results imply that the combination of fabrication technology and periodic pattern design provides a promising platform for achieving high-performance absorption materials.

Abstract:The scientificity and necessity of the microwave absorbing composites prepared by combining conductive polymers with other materials are expounded.The research progresses of conductive polymers applied in the field of electromagnetic protection materials in recent years are reviewed.The conductive polymer composites for microwave absorption with binary system,multiple system and multi-layer structures are summarized emphatically,and the preparation processes,morphology structures and microwave absorption properties of the three kinds of the materials are introduced.It is emphasized that the introduction of conductive polymer components can enhance the dielectric loss and resistance loss of materials,adjust the electromagnetic parameters and improve the matching degree of the material impedance to some extent,which plays an important role in improving the microwave absorption properties of materials.In the future,the researches on the conductive polymers based microwave absorption composites will focus on improving the environmental adaptability,reducing the complexity of the preparation process and developing towards the infrared microwave compatible absorption.

Abstract:Conductive polymer composites (CPCs) for electromagnetic interference shielding have received significant attention and shown rapid development. According to the electromagnetic wave interface conduction theory of Schelkunoff, excellent conductive performance and perfect conductive network structure are prerequisites for high shielding efficiency of electromagnetic interference shielding composites. Effective multiple interface reflection absorption, dielectric loss, and hysteresis loss characteristics of the materials are crucial for realizing the regulation of the electromagnetic interference shielding performance of CPCs. Therefore, the structural design of conductive and magnetic network for CPCs is crucial for achieving high shielding performance. In this study, it is established that an electromagnetic shielding composite with a uniform structure is widely used because of its simple preparation process, but its inefficient conductive network causes a high percolation threshold. The inefficiency can be solved by designing a composite structure and improving the efficiency of the conductive network. Currently, common structural designs include segregated structural, layered structural, and foam structural designs. These structural designs effectively solve the problem of high percolation threshold of CPCs and coordinate the contradiction between the performance of electromagnetic interference shielding and other advantages.

Abstract:The main objective of this paper is to explore structural design of conductive core-spun yarn woven composites to improve their electromagnetic shielding effectiveness. Conductive core-spun yarns were woven into single-layer and double-layer fabrics with different structural parameters, and their electromagnetic shielding effectiveness was compared. Between different structures, in general, woven composites with high compact ratio have high shielding effectiveness. However, for honeycomb structures, due to their honeycomb appearance, they exhibit a higher electromagnetic shielding effectiveness when its compact ratio is slightly lower than other structures. The electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of double-layer woven composites is higher than that of single-layer woven composites. In double-layer woven composites, especially double-layer honeycomb woven composites with opposite sides, their electromagnetic shielding effectiveness is the best. The electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of woven composites can be improved through structural design. For example, the compact rate of the composite is increased, the surface of the composite is formed into a concave and convex shape, the number of conductive core-spun yarns per unit area is increased, and a double-layer or multi-layer structure with intermediate air layer and multiple reflections is formed.

Abstract:Abstract The rapid development of aerospace weapons and equipment, wireless base stations and 5G communication technologies has put forward newer and higher requirements for the comprehensive performances of polymer-based electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composites. However, most of currently prepared polymer-based EMI shielding composites are still difficult to combine high performance and multi-functionality. In response to this, based on the research works of relevant researchers as well as our research group, three possible directions to break through the above bottlenecks are proposed, including construction of efficient conductive networks, optimization of multi-interfaces for lightweight and multifunction compatibility design. The future development trends in three directions are prospected, and it is hoped to provide certain theoretical basis and technical guidance for the preparation, research and development of polymer-based EMI shielding composites.

Abstract:Electromagnetic shielding materials are special materials that can effectively absorb and shield electromagnetic waves and protect electronic devices and electronic circuits from interference and damage by electromagnetic radiation. This paper presents the research progress of intrinsically conductive polymer materials and conductive polymer-based composites for electromagnetic shielding as well as an introduction to lightweight polymer composites with multicomponent systems. These materials have excellent electromagnetic interference shielding properties and have the advantages of electromagnetic wave absorption and higher electromagnetic shielding effectiveness compared with conventional electromagnetic shielding materials, but these materials still have their own shortcomings. Finally, the paper also discusses the future opportunities and challenges of intrinsically conductive polymers and composites containing a conductive polymer matrix for electromagnetic shielding applications.

Abstract:Energy storage and energy harvesting are the effective strategies to solve the energy and environmental crises. Dielectric polymer composites with high permittivity and energy density are extremely desired for the energy devices. However, there is a great deviation of effective permittivity between the real polymer composite and the ideal model, limiting their applications. In the present work, we adopt the coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to study the construction of particle network and the structure–property relationship, aiming to design polymer composite with high effective permittivity at low particle loading. Based on the analysis of topological structure of particle network, we propose three strategies, including grafting polymer chains to particles, selective locating into diblock copolymer and tuning moderate particle–matrix interaction. In particular, if the matrix chains are directly grafted to the particles, the network forms at very low particle loading, i.e., very low percolation threshold is achieved. Constructing the particle network opens a new way to design high permittivity of dielectric polymer composite, which is essential for their practical applications such as dielectric capacitors and triboelectric nanogenerators.

Abstract:The rapid development of mobile devices has greatly improved the lives of people, but they have also caused problems with electromagnetic interference (EMI) and information security. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop high performance EMI shielding materials to suppress electromagnetic radiation and prevent information leakage. Some reports point out that the self-orientation behavior of fillers under external forces contributes to the improvement of EMI shielding performance. So how to construct an effective filler orientation structure in the polymer matrix is becoming a hot topic in the research of EMI shielding materials. In view of the fact that there are few reports on the preparation of polymer matrix EMI shielding composites by external field induction, from this perspective, we first highly focus on strategies for the construction of conductive networks within composites based on external field induction. Subsequently, the research progress on the preparation of polymer matrix EMI shielding composites by inducing the orientation of inorganic fillers through external fields, including temperature, electrostatic, gravity, mechanical force and magnetic fields, is organized and sorted out in detail. Notably, the particular response relationship between the unique composite structures prepared by external field induction and the incident electromagnetic waves is further dissected. Finally, the key scientific problems that need to be solved in the preparation of polymer matrix EMI shielding composites assisted by external fields are proposed. The approach discussed and the strategies proposed are expected to provide some guidance for the innovative design of high-performance polymer matrix EMI shielding composites.

Highly electrically conductive MOF/conducting polymer nanocomposites toward tunable electromagnetic wave absorption

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted significant interest as self-templates and precursors for the synthesis of carbon-based composites aimed at electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. However, the utilization of high-temperature treatments has introduced uncertainties regarding the compositions and microstructures of resulting derivatives. Additionally, complete carbonization has led to diminished yields of the produced carbon composites, significantly limiting their practical applications. Consequently, the exploration of pristine MOF-based EMW absorbers presents an intriguing yet challenging endeavor, primarily due to inherently low electrical conductivity. In this study, we showcase the utilization of structurally robust Zr-MOFs as scaffolds to build highly conductive Zr-MOF/PPy composites via an inner-outer dual-modification approach, which involves the production of conducting polypyrrole (PPy) both within the confined nanoporous channels and the external surface of Zr-MOFs via post-synthetic modification. The interconnection of confined PPy and surface-lined PPy together leads to a consecutive and extensive conducting network to the maximum extent. This therefore entails outstanding conductivity up to ∼14.3 S cm−1 in Zr-MOF/PPy composites, which is approximately 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than that for conductive MOF nanocomposites constructed from either inner or outer modification. Benefiting from the strong and tunable conduction loss, as well as the induced dielectric polarization originated from the porous structures and MOF-polymer interfaces, Zr-MOF/PPy exhibits excellent microwave attenuation capabilities and a tunable absorption frequency range. Specifically, with only 15 wt.% loading, the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) can reach up to -67.4 dB, accompanied by an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) extending to 6.74 GHz. Furthermore, the microwave absorption characteristics can be tailored from the C-band to the Ku-band by adjusting the loading of PPy. This work provides valuable insights into the fabrication of conductive MOF composites by presenting a straightforward pathway to enhance and regulate electrical conduction in MOF-based nanocomposites, thus paving a way to facilely fabricate pristine MOF-based microwave absorbers.
Asymmetric conductive structure design for stabilized composites with absorption dominated ultra-efficient electromagnetic interference shielding performance

Abstract:Structurally asymmetric melamine foam (MF)/Polyaniline (Pani)/Fe3O4@reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/Ag-plated aramid paper (AgP)/Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stabilized composites were successfully designed with controlled distribution of the conductive network to accomplish harmonization of electromagnetic absorption and shielding. Wherein, the upper MF/Pani/Fe3O4@rGO/PDMS foam combines in-situ polymerization and dip coating methods utilizing the synergistic effect of conductive Pani and Fe3O4@rGO to achieve superior impedance matching and absorption performance, while the dense conductive network formed in the bottom AgP by electroless plating technique ensures superior electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EMI SE). With the rational arrangement of the absorptive and conductive shielding layers, MF/Pani/Fe3O4@rGO/AgP/PDMS composites demonstrate of 70 dB and extremely high absorption coefficient (A) of 0.86 at X-band. Notably, benefiting from the asymmetric structural design and PDMS wrapping, the composites possess superior thermal stability, mechanical strength and stable EMI SE. This valid work delivers a useful concept for the rational regulation of conductive networks in shielding composites, improving the applicability in practical environments.

Abstract:A composite material with a high potential for absorbing electromagnetic waves (EMW) was obtained by selecting poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) as the matrix, MXene as the conductive filler, and cobalt ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 ) as the magnetic filler. A layer-by-layer assembly strategy involved hot pressing and sequential blade coating, followed by vapor-induced phase separation, was used to implement the preparation of PVDF/MXene/CoFe 2 O 4 (PMC) composites. The process facilitates the formation of a well-organized multilayer porous framework, providing a gradient of positive conductivity, negative magnetism, and porosity within the composites. Incorporating distinct multilayer, porous, and gradient structures into a single composite led to exceptional impedance matching ( Z ), with an area percentage of up to 8.4 % in the optimal range of 0.8 to 1.2. Furthermore, the multiple interfaces formed by the various components, multilayer structure, and porous configuration significantly enhanced the EMW attenuation capability, with the attenuation constant reaching as high as 274. Consequently, the PMC composite demonstrated outstanding performance with a minimal reflection loss (RL min ) of −56.5 dB, a specific RL min of 23.5 dB/mm, and the broadest effective absorption bandwidth of 3.2 GHz. The combination of the competitive EMW absorption capability, low density, flexibility, adequate tensile strength, and amphiphilic Janus surface may significantly broaden the application scenarios of PMC composites.

Abstract:Structural and functional integrated lightweight polymer-based composites with excellent mechanical and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties are urgently demanded in the field of advanced aerospace field. Effective design to construct the interfacial porous microstructures is crucial yet remains highly challenging for maximum EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) while improving the strength of composites. Herein, novel interfacial continuous network structures are constructed based on the in-suit synthesis of porous carbon network on the carbon fibers and chemical functionalized with polydopamine (PDA) to achieve simultaneous improvement of mechanical properties and EMI SE. Results indicate that the construction of active porous carbon networks significantly improves the surface activity and wettability of carbon fibers, which is conducive to enhancing the interfacial strength of the composites. Owing to the synergistic effect of physical enhancement for porous carbon and chemical reinforcement for PDA, the bending strength of the modified composite reaches 138.9 MPa, and the wear rate decreases by 82.9 %, demonstrating excellent mechanical properties. It is worth noting that the EMI SE reaches more than 62 dB in the X-band when the thickness of the modified composite is only 0.4 mm, showing excellent EMI shielding performance. Most importantly, this study provides solid basic knowledge of the interfacial structure design of composites, which is favorable for obtaining expected mechanical and EMI shielding performances and offers strong potential for applications in structural components of the aerospace and electronic equipment field.

Abstract:This article provides an in-depth exploration of the current state of research in microwave-absorbing composite materials, juxtaposing the status quo of coating type and structurally reinforced resin-based composites, with a particular emphasis on the latter's structural and performance superiority. It succinctly elucidates the mechanisms of electromagnetic shielding, as well as the conditions and underlying principles that govern the absorption of microwaves by composite materials. The review continues by dissecting the strategies for enhancing the microwave-absorption capabilities of resin-based composites, including the classification of absorbents, absorbent selection, and an overview of structural design innovations in microwave-absorbing materials. Structural wave-absorbing composites are manufactured by combining different types of resin matrices, absorbers, reinforcing fibers and construction methods. The interactions between these components are scrutinized to reveal how each contributes to the overall performance of the composite. We spotlight the unique construction methods and the intricate relationship between structure and performance in structurally reinforced composites, offering insights into the optimization strategies for composite-material absorption characteristics. Concluding with a forward-looking perspective, the article contemplates the burgeoning potential and future applications of fiber-reinforced resin-based microwave-absorbing composites, setting the stage for a new era in material science and technology.

Abstract:The present work reviews the recent study about multicomponent conductive polymer composites (CPCs) applied in the field of electromagnetic wave interference (EMI) shielding. The rheological properties of the multicomponent systems, the numerical modeling of EMI shielding, and the special structure design of CPCs are highlighted and discussed. The colossal development of modern electronic devices has inevitably led to an increase in electromagnetic interference (EMI), which has gradually become the fourth most prevalent type of pollution in the world. It is therefore necessary to seek more effective EMI‐shielding materials to overcome the shortcomings of conventional metal‐based materials, which include high density, a lack of mechanical flexibility, low corrosion resistance and costly processing. Conductive polymer composites (CPCs) have attracted more and more attention due to their superiority in many aspects. However, their performances should be further enhanced for future applications. One polymer with only one type of filler often cannot meet this kind of requirement. In this paper, filled polymer materials for EMI shielding are reviewed in terms of their processing, rheological properties, conductivity, and shielding effectiveness. Moreover, the combination of different ingredients and fillers when fabricating multicomponent composites for EMI shielding is also highlighted. The coordination of various components in composites with different structures, including solid, segregated, layered/sandwiched, and foamed/porous structures, is then discussed.

Anisotropic PDMS/Alumina/Carbon Fiber Composites with a High Thermal Conductivity and an Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Performance

Abstract:The development of polymer-based composites with a high thermal conductivity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance is crucial to the application of polymer-based composites in electronic equipment. Herein, a novel strategy combining ice-templated assembly and stress-induced orientation was proposed to prepare polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/alumina/carbon fiber (CF) composites. CF in the composites exhibited a highly oriented structure in the horizontal direction. Alumina was connected to the CF, promoting the formation of thermal conductive pathways in both the horizontal and vertical directions. As the CF content was 27.5 vol% and the alumina content was 14.0 vol%, the PDMS/alumina/CF composite had high thermal conductivities in the horizontal and vertical directions, which were 8.44 and 2.34 W/(m·K), respectively. The thermal conductivity in the horizontal direction was 40.2 times higher than that of PDMS and 5.0 times higher than that of the composite with a randomly distributed filler. The significant enhancement of the thermal conductivity was attributed to the oriented structure of the CF and the bridging effect of alumina. The PDMS/alumina/CF composite exhibited an excellent EMI shielding effectiveness of 40.8 dB which was 2.4 times higher than that of the composite with a randomly distributed filler. The PDMS/alumina/CF composite also exhibited a low reflectivity of the electromagnetic waves. This work could provide a guide for the research of polymer-based composites with a high thermal conductivity and an EMI shielding performance.

Abstract:The structural design of CPCs for EMI shielding mainly includes homogenous structure, porous structure, laminated structure, and segregated structure. The proliferation of electronic devices and wireless communication in our daily lives has led to a significant increase in electromagnetic pollution. This issue poses a serious threat to the proper functioning of electronic equipment as well as human health. Therefore, the investigation of materials with superior electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding capabilities has garnered growing interest. In this paper, the mechanisms of EMI shielding were first introduced briefly. It was noted that the development of advanced EMI shielding materials involved adhering to principles such as minimizing reflection loss, enhancing absorption loss, and incorporating multiple internal reflections. The construction and shielding properties of traditional EMI shielding materials were introduced. Unlike metal materials with high densities and reflection loss, lightweight conductive polymer composites (CPCs) have been the most promising EMI shielding materials. Meanwhile, carbon‐based nanofillers such as carbon nanotubes and graphene nanosheets, along with two‐dimensional transition metal carbonitrides MXenes Ti3C2Tx, have emerged as the most promising and versatile conductive nanofillers for CPCs. The EMI shielding performance and loss mechanism of CPCs with homogeneous structure, segregated structure, laminated structure, and porous structure were introduced in detail. It was noted that the EMI shielding performance could be significantly improved by incorporating multiple structures into the same CPCs, such as a rational combination of segregated and porous structures. Finally, the challenges and development trends of CPCs for EMI shielding applications were discussed. Highlights Mechanisms of EMI shielding were introduced from aspect of energy dissipation. Structure–property of traditional EMI shielding materials was described. EMI shielding performance of CPCs with different structures was summarized. Future challenges and growing trends of CPCs for EMI shielding were discussed. Absorption‐dominated loss and multiple structure design were emphasized.
