Abstract:With the progress of high-capacity radio access networks, ultra-dense small cells are rapidly being deployed in urban areas. As a result, the deployment of a large number of optical fibers in urban areas becomes a severe issue. In this Letter, we propose a hybrid fiber–terahertz (THz) mobile fronthaul system supporting flexible and high-order wireless signal transmission with the delta-sigma modulation. The photonic THz transmission is used as the seamless extension of fiber-based fronthaul in small cells. A 20-Gbit/s digital fiber–THz fronthaul system is experimentally demonstrated to validate the proposed scheme, with 10-km optical fiber transmission and 300-GHz wireless relay. Carrier aggregation of up to 10 40-MHz and 60-MHz 5G-new radio (5G-NR) channels at the radio carrier frequency of 3.9 GHz is reported. The design of quantization noise suppressed delta-sigma modulation enables the system to transmit orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation up to 16384 order quadrate amplitude modulation (QAM) mapping with the error vector magnitude (EVM) below 0.5%.

Abstract:This article highlights the potential of photonic-assisted analog fronthaul solutions, particularly analog radio-over-fiber (ARoF) and analog radio-over-free-space-optics (ARoFSO), as prospective alternatives for the development of 6G applications. First, we present (New-Radio) NR/5G conformance testing of ARoF and ARoFSO fronthaul links, including the assessment of the error vector magnitude (EVM) and adjacent channel leakage power ratio (ACLR) to demonstrate compliance with the minimum transmitter requirements outlined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards. Then, with focus on future 6G Distributed-MIMO (D-MIMO) networks, we conduct experimental validations of coherent joint transmissions (CJT) using ARoF and ARoFSO fronthaul links in a 2-transmitter D-MIMO network, demonstrating MIMO gains of up to 5.35 dB and that these links meet the stringent synchronization demands for CJT. These tests represent the first realizations of CJT utilizing ARoF and ARoFSO links. Finally, for consistency, we validate CJT in a 4-transmitter D-MIMO network with ARoF fronthaul links, with MIMO gains up to 9.4 dB and confirming our previous results. This evidence indicates that these technologies hold significant potential for applications in future 6G systems.

Abstract:With the exponential growth in data density and user ends of wireless networks, fronthaul is tasked with supporting aggregate bandwidths exceeding thousands of gigahertz while accommodating high-order modulation formats. However, it must address the bandwidth and noise limitations imposed by optical links and devices in a cost-efficient manner. Here we demonstrate a high-fidelity fronthaul system enabled by self-homodyne digital-analog radio-over-fiber superchannels, using a broadband electro-optic comb and uncoupled multicore fiber. This self-homodyne superchannel architecture not only offers capacity boosting but also supports carrier-recovery-free reception. Our approach achieves a record-breaking 15,000 GHz aggregated wireless bandwidth, corresponding to a 0.879 Pb/s common public radio interface (CPRI) equivalent data rate. Higher-order formats up to 1,048,576 quadrature-amplitude-modulated (QAM) are showcased at a 100 Tb/s class data rate. Furthermore, we employ a packaged on-chip electro-optic comb as the sole optical source to reduce the cost, supporting a data rate of 100.5 Tb/s with the 1024-QAM format. These demonstrations propel fronthaul into the era of Pb/s-level capacity and exhibit the promising potential of integrated-photonics implementation, pushing the boundaries to new heights in terms of capacity, fidelity, and cost.

Abstract:Empowered by spectral aggregation and cell densification, future 5G mobile data networks pose a huge challenge to building next-generation mobile fronthaul systems with higher capacity, scalability, and energy efficiency. Under this circumstance, traditional solutions based on the Common Public Radio Interface or channel aggregation with digital signal processing (DSP) are not sufficient to support heterogeneous ubiquitous wireless access. In this paper, we demonstrate a point-to-multipoint bidirectional mobile fronthaul system. Wavelength division multiplexing plus frequency division multiplexing is applied to support independent asynchronous small cells. Intensity-modulation and direct-detection downlink (DL) as well as field-modulation and heterodyne-detection uplink (UL) are proposed. Combined with efficient virtual tone-based DSP for phase recovery and carrier-frequency-offset estimation, signal degradations from beating among incoherent asynchronous UL signals are mitigated. Proof-of-concept experiments are demonstrated where 20 and 16 80-MHz component carriers are transmitted over 25-km standard single-mode fiber for DL and UL, respectively. Less than 6% error vector magnitudes with 64-, 16-, and 4-ary quadrature amplitude modulation are obtained.

Abstract:A novel digital mobile fronthaul (MFH) architecture combining delta-sigma modulation (DSM) and the chirp-managed technique is proposed to enhance spectral efficiency and dispersion tolerance. In the proposed MFH, one-bit DSM based on an optimized 4th-order cascaded resonator feedback (CRFB) circuit is utilized as the digitization interface to quantize the high- order 1024/4096 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals. The digitized on-off keying (OOK) signals are transmitted over an optical intensity modulation-direct detection (IM-DD) link, which is chirp-managed by a directly modulated laser (DML) and an optical spectral re-shaper. Simulations of chirp-managed lasers (CML) are conducted employing VPI software to confirm that the optical spectral re-shaper exerts similar effects when placed before and after 50 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) when the transmitted (Tx) power is below ∼10 dBm. For self-phase modulation (SPM)-dominated high Tx power (>10 dBm), the post filter outperforms the front one and improves the transmitted power dynamic range. Furthermore, the proof-of-concept experimental demonstration of the proposed MFH based on the DSM and chirp-managed technology is performed over 50-km 20- Gbaud OOK DML-based IM/DD transmission with an information data rate of 10.55 Gbps, which reinforces that the cost-effective and high-spectral-efficiency DSM-CML approach is anticipated to be a promising candidate for digital MFH in B5G/6G, especially for cost-sensitive and high-fidelity applications.

Abstract:The continuous advancement of wireless mobile communication necessitates an increase in the allocated frequency bands for each generation. Consequently, higher frequency photodiodes are required in analog radio-over-fiber (ARoF) fronthaul solutions. However, the limited available bandwidth in the wireless domain poses challenges to efficiently utilize the capacity of these photodiodes. To overcome this obstacle, this paper explores the utilization of a single-photodiode base station configuration to enable hybrid digital radio-over-fiber (DRoF) and ARoF transmission. Furthermore, it proposes a straightforward signal processing approach to effectively separate the distinct analog and digital radio-over-fiber signals. To evaluate the feasibility of the proposed signal processing method, software simulations were conducted. The initial findings indicate that the combination of a single-photodiode base station configuration and the suggested signal processing approach holds promise for hybrid digital and analog radio-over-fiber systems. It demonstrates the potential to minimize the number of required photodiodes, thus improving efficiency in the context of limited available bandwidth.

Abstract:This paper presents the architectures, algorithms, and implementation considerations of an efficient all digital DS-CDMA transceiver used for upstream burst-mode packet transmission in an Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) Network, which aims to support integrated services. The transmitter is frequency agile and it supports fine adjustment of signal power and chip delay, which are reserved for MAC ranging in the initialization process. The receiver has corresponding Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) unit as well as frequency offset and chip delay estimation module. To achieve fast acquisition, the receiver employs a parallel correlation FIR filter architecture, and the resultant hardware complexity of the correlator can be reduced by optimizing the structure. Field trials show it can work under a CNR as low as -12 db, and the acquisition can be achieved within 2 data bytes. The architecture is very suited for ASIC design

Abstract:In this paper, we propose high-capacity spectrally-efficient optical mobile fronthaul (MFH) architectures featuring wavelength resource sharing, where multiple cell sites share one dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) channel instead of occupying a number of separated DWDM channels. In the downlink (DL), subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) is integrated with DWDM passive optical network (PON). The key technical innovation lies in the reception of uplink (UL) signals being optical aggregated with ultra-small spacing. We introduce two novel schemes for spectrally-efficient and low-complexity upstream transmissions. The first method is based on SCM in remote radio heads (RRHs) and coherent detection in baseband units (BBUs), achieving channel spacing of as small as 100 MHz. For the first time, successful coherent reception of LTE signal, whose symbol rate (15 ksps) is much smaller than the laser linewidth, is achieved by pairing a radio frequency (RF) pilot tone from each RRH. Bidirectional transmission of four 20-MHz 16-QAM-OFDM LTE-like signals with 100-MHz spacing aggregated on one wavelength is demonstrated. For the second proposed UL scheme, we report a low-complexity ultra-dense WDM (UDWDM) over DWDM allocation with 1-GHz wavelength spacing and novel phase-noise-insensitive heterodyne detection using MHz-linewidth lasers and an off-the-shelf envelope detector. We experimentally demonstrate the transmission and simple detection of multi-channel 100/200Mb/s OOK or 200Mb/s 16-QAM-OFDM signals with 1-GHz spacing over 30-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) using 5MHz-linewidth lasers. By enabling ultra-high spectral efficiency, high receiver sensitivity, and low-complexity, the proposed approach achieves a significant breakthrough for future high-capacity mobile fronthaul systems.

Abstract:In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate digital mobile fronthaul (MFH) for 65536 quadrature amplitude modulation (65536-QAM) signals based on a diff-delta-sigma modulation (D-DSM) scheme with orthogonal circulant matrix transform (OCT) precoding. By combining the DDSM scheme with OCT precoding, we successfully solved the problem of uneven distribution of in-band quantization noise (IBN) while bringing about a quantization SNR gain of about 1.5 dB. In addition, we compare two signal combination schemes, Gray coding and power superposition, in the D-DSM scheme. The results show that the power superposition scheme can achieve similar performance to Gray coding with lower computational complexity. At the same time, the power superposition scheme is less affected by the saturation effect. Therefore, the D-DSM solution combined with OCT precoding and power superposition provides an effective solution for future 6 G digital mobile fronthaul. (c) 2024 Optica Publishing Group. Abstract:The coherent digital radio-over-fiber (DRoF) system is a promising candidate for future mobile fronthaul networks (MFNs) due to its high receiver sensitivity and excellent robustness against nonlinearities. However, conventional coherent receivers with complicated structure and heavy algorithms are too expensive and power-hungry for cost-sensitive MFN applications. In addition, currently deployed digital MFNs based on common public radio interface (CPRI) suffer from low spectral efficiency and high data rate. Towards these issues we propose a novel DRoF downlink scheme employing a simple self-coherent receiver. In baseband unit (BBU), the radio signal is converted to a digital bit stream by a band-pass delta-sigma modulator (BP-DSM), which can be simply recovered with the utilization of a band-pass filter at the receiver. In remote radio unit (RRU), an electro-absorption modulated laser (EML) acts as a low-cost coherent homodyne receiver in virtue of injection locking technique. In the experiment, the injection-locked operation of the DSM signal is successfully achieved, and two modified schemes are proposed for the DSM signal to increase the locking range with a tolerable sensitivity penalty. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our approach in two aspects: 1) the EML-based coherent receiver outperforms a PIN photodiode in terms of receiver sensitivity; 2) compared to the analog RoF system, a 5-dB improvement in loss budget is obtained when DSM is employed with the aid of a simple equalizer.

Abstract:Broadband amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) light sources are recognized for their cost-effective generation. However, their inherent high-intensity noise and the stringent requirement for time delay matching limits their widespread application in coherent optical telecommunication. Here we propose a broadband ASE source-enabled digital-analog radio-over-fiber (DA-RoF) mobile fronthaul architecture, leveraging semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) and multicore fiber in tandem. Our proposed system uses SOAs to suppress the intensity noise of the ASE carrier and transmits the DA-RoF signal alongside an unmodulated carrier through distinct cores of an 8-core, 1-km fiber. This setup significantly enhances the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by 19.4 dB, boosts capacity, and enables self-homodyne detection at the receiver end. We achieve an aggregated bandwidth of 35 GHz (7 cores × 5 GHz), supporting a 2.05-Tb/s CPRI-equivalent data rate with 1024-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulated (1024-QAM) signals. Additionally, we analyze the impact of chromatic dispersion on signal-to-noise ratio for broadband source coherent detection systems. This innovative scheme offers a pragmatic solution for integrating low-cost broadband sources into cost-sensitive fronthaul systems, providing both high capacity and fidelity in massive deployment scenarios.

Abstract:We propose a truncated digital delta-sigma modulated radio-over-fiber (TDDSM-RoF) scheme and verify it experimentally in a 10-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) coherent system. The 40-Gbaud TDDSM-RoF signal with a common public radio interface equivalent data rate (CPRI-EDR) of 0.214 Tb/s is successfully transmitted in the system with excellent performance. The recovered error vector magnitude (EVM) of TDDSM-RoF signal is 1.27%, meeting the EVM requirement for 4096-quadrature amplitude modulation (4096-QAM) transmission in fronthaul. Compared with the analog RoF (A-RoF) and digital-analog RoF (DA-RoF) schemes, the TDDSM-RoF scheme with a 6-times oversampling rate (6-OSR) DSM achieves signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gains of 15.7 and 10.2 dB, respectively, at the cost of extra bandwidth. We also demonstrate a truncated-DA-RoF (TDA-RoF) scheme with analog quantization error. Although the TDA-RoF consumes less bandwidth than TDDSM-RoF, it has limited improvement in SNR. Compared with the commercial digital RoF (D-RoF) solution, the proposed TDA-RoF has an advantage in the required bandwidth and the TDDSM-RoF achieves a higher SNR gain and higher-QAM transmission. Both of them can serve as promising solutions for future 6G fronthaul.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high reliability mobile fronthaul transmission system using a novel Maximal Ratio Combined receiver (MRC-RX) which combines direct and lite-coherent detections. The maximal ratio combined algorithm employed in the MRC-RX takes the advantage of both direct detection and lite-coherent detection, it ensures the best performance in the case of either low or high optical received power. By using MRC-RX, the error vector magnitude (EVM) performance can be reduced to be smaller than 10% in the proof-of-concept experiment.

Abstract:We propose an access network that integrates fiber and wireless for mobile fronthaul（MFH） with simple protection capabilities, using dual-mode orbital angular momentum（OAM） multiplexing. We experimentally demonstrate a 3.35 Gbit/s DMT-32 QAM preequalized system with 10 km and 15 km fiber links in the 5.9 GHz band; then there is a link of two channels with a 0.5 m wireless link.
