Abstract:The heat conduction in an open transverse-field Ising chain is studied by using quantization in the Fock space of operators in the weak-coupling regimes, i.e. the coupling is much smaller than the transverse field. The non-equilibrium steady state is obtained for large-size systems coupled to Markovian baths at its ends. The ballistic transport is observed in the uniform chain and normal diffusion in the random exchange chain. In addition, the ballistic-diffusive transition is found at the intermediate disorder regime. The thermal conductivity. is also calculated in the low-and high-temperature regimes. Abstract:We prove the hydrodynamic limit for a one-dimensional harmonic chain of interacting atoms with a random flip of the momentum sign. The system is open: at the left boundary it is attached to a heat bath at temperature $T_-$, while at the right endpoint it is subject to an action of a force which reads as $\bar F + \frac 1{\sqrt n} \widetilde{\mathcal F} (n^2 t)$, where $\bar F \ge0$ and $\widetilde{\mathcal F}(t)$ is a periodic function. Here $n$ is the size of the microscopic system. Under a diffusive scaling of space-time, we prove that the empirical profiles of the two locally conserved quantities - the volume stretch and the energy - converge, as $n\to+\infty$, to the solution of a non-linear diffusive system of conservative partial differential equations with a Dirichlet type and Neumann boundary conditions on the left and the right endpoints, respectively.

Abstract:We consider heat transfer in an infinite two-dimensional square harmonic scalar lattice lying in a viscous environment and subjected to a heat source. The basic equations for the particles of the lattice are stated in the form of a system of stochastic ordinary differential equations. We perform a continualization procedure and derive an infinite system of linear partial differential equations for covariance variables. The most important results of the paper are the deterministic differential–difference equation describing non-stationary heat propagation in the lattice and the analytical formula in the integral form for its steady-state solution describing kinetic temperature distribution caused by a point heat source of a constant intensity. The comparison between numerical solution of stochastic equations and obtained analytical solution demonstrates a very good agreement everywhere except for the main diagonals of the lattice (with respect to the point source position), where the analytical solution is singular.

Abstract:We consider unsteady heat transfer in a one-dimensional harmonic crystal surrounded by a viscous environment and subjected to an external heat supply. The basic equations for the crystal particles are stated in the form of a system of stochastic differential equations. We perform a continualization procedure and derive an infinite set of linear partial differential equations for covariance variables. An exact analytic solution describing unsteady ballistic heat transfer in the crystal is obtained. It is shown that the stationary spatial profile of the kinetic temperature caused by a point source of heat supply of constant intensity is described by the Macdonald function of zero order. A comparison with the results obtained in the framework of the classical heat equation is presented. We expect that the results obtained in the paper can be verified by experiments with laser excitation of low-dimensional nanostructures.

Non-Clausius heat transfer: the example of harmonic chain with an impurity

Abstract:Motivated by recent discussion about the possibility of non-Clausius (from cold to hot) heat flow, we revisit the familiar model of an impurity atom of mass $M$ embedded in an otherwise uniform one-dimensional harmonic lattice of host atoms of mass $m$. Assuming that the initial distributions for the impurity and the rest of the lattice have canonical forms with given temperatures, we show that the average kinetic energy of the impurity may increase with time even if its initial temperature is higher than or equal to that of the lattice. Such an increase is only temporary in uniform lattices and in lattices with a heavy impurity ($M\ge m$), but may be permanent in lattices with a localized vibrational mode generated by a light impurity ($M<m$). Thus the model shows a non-Clausius spontaneous heat flow directed from a colder lattice to a hotter impurity.

Large-deviations approach to thermalization: the case of harmonic chains with conservative noise

Abstract:We investigate the possibility of characterizing the different thermalization pathways through a large-deviation approach. Specifically, we consider clean, disordered and quasi-periodic harmonic chains under energy and momentum-conserving noise. For their associated master equations, describing the dynamics of normal modes energies, we compute the fluctuations of activity and dynamical entropy in the corresponding biased ensembles. First-order dynamical phase transition are found that originates from different activity regions in action space. At the transitions, the steady-state in the biased ensembles changes from extended to localized, yielding a kind of condensation in normal-modes space. For the disordered and quasi-periodic models, we argue that the phase-diagram has a critical point at a finite value of the disorder or potential strength.

Abstract:The Letter addresses the relationship between hyperbolic equations of heat conduction and microscopic models of dielectrics. Effects of the non-stationary heat conduction are investigated in two one-dimensional models with conserved momentum: Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) chain and chain of rotators (CR). These models belong to different universality classes with respect to stationary heat conduction. Direct numeric simulations reveal in both models a crossover from oscillatory decay of short-wave perturbations of the temperature field to smooth diffusive decay of the long-wave perturbations. Such behavior is inconsistent with parabolic Fourier equation of the heat conduction. The crossover wavelength decreases with increase of average temperature in both models. For the FPU model the lowest order hyperbolic Cattaneo-Vernotte equation for the non-stationary heat conduction is not applicable, since no unique relaxation time can be determined.

Abstract:We consider one-dimensional systems of all-to-all harmonically coupled particles with arbitrary masses, subject to two Langevin thermal baths. The couplings correspond to the mean-field limit of long-range interactions. Additionally, the particles can be subject to a harmonic on-site potential to break momentum conservation. Using the non-equilibrium Green operator formalism, we calculate the transmittance, the heat flow and local temperatures, for arbitrary configurations of masses. For identical masses, we show analytically that, the heat flux decays with the system size $N$, as $1/N$, regardless of the conservation or not of the momentum, and of the introduction or not of a Kac factor. These results describe in good agreement the thermal behavior of systems with small heterogeneity in the masses.

Abstract:This preprint contains the English translation of the paper "Relaxation dynamics of a quantum chain of harmonic oscillators", which was published by the author in 1980 in the Ukrainian Physical Journal. Comments describing its motivations, background ideas and results are presented as well. This paper addressed to the problem of approach to the thermal equilibrium in an isolated macroscopic quantum system, which was studied on the example of the quantum chain of weakly interacting harmonic oscillators. In the initial state, macroscopic energy was supplied to one oscillator (atom) in the chain. Subsequent evolution of the quantum state of the whole chain was determined due to the model integrability. The main subject of interest was the time evolution of the reduced density operators characterizing the quantum state of a particular atom. On the short time-scale, the energy perturbation expands along the chain with the velocity of the fastest phonon mode. On the long-time scale, the single-atom density operators display strong fluctuations around the canonical Gibbs distribution. These fluctuations are caused by the degeneracy of the energy level differences (presence of resonances) in the model of coupled harmonic oscillators. After lifting this degeneracy, fluctuations are suppressed providing, that the reduced density operator of each atom in the chain becomes very close to the Gibbs distribution at almost any time moment.

Ballistic transport in the classical Toda chain with harmonic pinning

Abstract:We investigate, via numerical simulation, heat transport in the nonequilibrium stationary state (NESS) of the 1D classical Toda chain with an additional pinning potential, which destroys momentum conservation. The NESS is produced by coupling the system, via Langevin dynamics, to two reservoirs at different temperatures. To our surprise, we find that when the pinning is harmonic, the transport is ballistic. We also find that on a periodic ring with nonequilibrium initial conditions and no reservoirs, the energy current oscillates without decay. Lastly, Poincaré sections of the 3-body case indicate that for all tested initial conditions, the dynamics occur on a 3-dimensional manifold. These observations suggest that the $N$-body Toda chain with harmonic pinning may be integrable. Alternatively, and more likely, this would be an example of a nonintegrable system without momentum conservation for which the heat flux is ballistic - contrary to all current expectations.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that a nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) exists at late times in open quantum systems with weak nonlinearity by following its nonequilibrium dynamics with a perturbative analysis. Here we consider an oscillator chain containing three-types of anharmonicity in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) model: cubic $\alpha$- and quartic $\beta$-type nearest-oscillator interactions and the on-site (pinned) Klein-Gordon (KG) quartic self-interaction. Assuming weak nonlinearity, we introduce a stochastic influence action approach to the problem and obtain the energy flow in different junctures of the chain. The formal results obtained here can be used for quantum transport problems in weakly nonlinear quantum systems. For $\alpha$-type anharmonicity, we observe that the first-order corrections do not play any role in the thermal transport in the NESS of the configuration we considered. For KG and $\beta$-types anharmonicity, we work out explicitly the case of two weakly nonlinearly coupled oscillators, with results scalable to any number of oscillators. We examine the late-time energy flows from one thermal bath to the other via the coupled oscillators, and show that both the zeroth- and the first-order contributions of the energy flow become constant in time at late times, signaling the existence of a late-time NESS to first order in nonlinearity. Our perturbative calculations provide a measure of the strength of nonlinearity for nonlinear open quantum systems, which may help control the mesoscopic heat transport distinct from or close to linear transport. Furthermore, our results also give a benchmark for the numerical challenge of simulating heat transport. Our setup and predictions can be implemented and verified by investigating heat flow in an array of Josephson junctions in the limit of large Josephson energy with the platform of circuit QED.

Nonanomalous heat transport in a one-dimensional composite chain

Abstract:Translation-invariant low-dimensional systems are known to exhibit anomalous heat transport. However, there are systems, such as the coupled-rotor chain, where translation invariance is satisfied, yet transport remains diffusive. It has been argued that the restoration of normal diffusion occurs due to the impossibility of defining a global stretch variable with a meaningful dynamics. In this Letter, an alternative mechanism is proposed, namely, that the transition to anomalous heat transport can occur at a scale that, under certain circumstances, may diverge to infinity. To illustrate the mechanism, I consider the case of a composite chain that conserves local energy and momentum as well as global stretch, and at the same time obeys, in the continuum limit, Fourier's law of heat transport. It is shown analytically that for vanishing elasticity the stationary temperature profile of the chain is linear; for finite elasticity, the same property holds in the continuum limit.

Thermal transport in long-range interacting harmonic chains perturbed by long-range conservative noise

Abstract:We study non-equilibrium properties of a chain of $N$ oscillators with both long-ranged harmonic interactions and long-range conservative noise that exchange momenta of particle pairs. We derive exact expressions for the (deterministic) energy-current auto-correlation at equilibrium, based on the kinetic approximation of the normal mode dynamics. In all cases the decay is algebraic in the thermodynamic limit. We distinguish four distinct regimes of correlation decay depending on the exponents controlling the range of deterministic and stochastic interactions. Surprisingly, we find that long-range noise breaks down the long-range correlations characteristic of low dimensional models, suggesting a normal regime in which heat transport becomes diffusive. For finite systems, we do also derive exact expressions for the finite-size corrections to the algebraic decay of the correlation. In certain regimes, these corrections are considerably large, rendering hard the estimation of transport properties from numerical data for the finite chains. Our results are tested against numerical simulations, performed with an efficient algorithm.

Abstract:We perform a numerical study of transport properties of a one-dimensional chain with couplings decaying as an inverse power $r^{-(1+\sigma)}$ of the intersite distance $r$ and open boundary conditions, interacting with two heat reservoirs. Despite its simplicity, the model displays highly nontrivial features in the strong long-range regime, $-1<\sigma<0$. At weak coupling with the reservoirs, the energy flux departs from the predictions of perturbative theory and displays anomalous superdiffusive scaling of the heat current with the chain size. We trace back this behavior to the transmission spectrum of the chain, which displays a self-similar structure with a characteristic sigma-dependent fractal dimension.

Abstract:Using the classical action-angle variables for the continuous model, we study the thermodynamics of the classical Heisenberg chain in an applied field by a generalized Bethe ansatz approach. The crucial point consists in the derivation of a phase-shifted density of states for the excitations of the model, obtained by imposing periodic boundary conditions. In the thermodynamic limit, the free energy can be expressed in terms of the solution of a non-linear integral equation, showing the universal dependece of the variable x=(JH)12/T.

Abstract:We continue the investigation, started in [J. Stat. Phys. 166, 926-1015 (2017)], of a network of harmonic oscillators driven out of thermal equilibrium by heat reservoirs. We study the statistics of the fluctuations of the heat fluxes flowing between the network and the reservoirs in the nonequilibrium steady state and in the large time limit. We prove a large deviation principle for these fluctuations and derive the fluctuation relation satisfied by the associated rate function.

Abstract:The statistics of the heat exchanged between two quantum XX spin chains prepared at different temperatures is studied within the assumption of weak coupling. This provides simple formulas for the average heat and its corresponding characteristic function, from which the probability distribu- tion may be computed numerically. These formulas are valid for arbitrary sizes and therefore allow us to analyze the role of the thermodynamic limit in this non-equilibrium setting. It is found that all thermodynamic quantities are extremely sensitive to the quantum phase transition of the XX chain.
