Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)
Rational curves on Hermitian manifolds

Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:This paper deals with superminimal surfaces in complex space forms by using theFrenet framing. We formulate explicitly the length squares of the higher fundamental forms andthe higher curvatures for superminimal surfaces in terms of the metric of the surface and the Khlerangle of the immersion. Particularly, some curvature pinching theorems for minimal 2-spheres in acomplex projective space are given and a new characterization of the Veronese sequence is obtained.

Some curvature pinching theorems for pseudo-holomorphic curves with constant Kahler angles in G(m)(C-N) are obtained, so that the corresponding results for pseudo-holomorphic curves in complex projective spaces are generalized.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the first Aeppli-Chern class for complex manifolds and show that the ( 1 , 1 ) (1,1) -component of the curvature 2 2 -form of the Levi-Civita connection on the anti-canonical line bundle represents this class. We systematically investigate the relationship between a variety of Ricci curvatures on Hermitian manifolds and the background Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, we study non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds by using the first Aeppli-Chern class and the Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics. In particular, we construct explicit Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics on Hopf manifolds S 2 n − 1 × S 1 \mathbb {S}^{2n-1}\times \mathbb {S}^1 . We also construct a smooth family of Gauduchon metrics on a compact Hermitian manifold such that the metrics are in the same first Aeppli-Chern class, and their first Chern-Ricci curvatures are the same and non-negative, but their Riemannian scalar curvatures are constant and vary smoothly between negative infinity and a positive number. In particular, it shows that Hermitian manifolds with non-negative first Chern class can admit Hermitian metrics with strictly negative Riemannian scalar curvature.
New Sphere Theorems under Curvature Operator of the Second Kind

Abstract:We investigate Riemannian manifolds $(M^n,g)$ whose curvature operator of the second kind $\mathring{R}$ satisfies the condition \begin{equation*} \alpha^{-1} (\lambda_1 +\cdots +\lambda_{\alpha}) > - \theta \bar{\lambda}, \end{equation*} where $\lambda_1 \leq \cdots \leq \lambda_{(n-1)(n+2)/2}$ are the eigenvalues of $\mathring{R}$, $\bar{\lambda}$ is their average, and $\theta > -1$. Under such conditions with optimal $\theta$ depending on $n$ and $\alpha$, we prove two differentiable sphere theorems in dimensions three and four, a homological sphere theorem in higher dimensions, and a curvature characterization of Kähler space forms. These results generalize recent works corresponding to $\theta =0$ of Cao-Gursky-Tran, Nienhaus-Petersen-Wink, and the author. Moreover, examples are provided to demonstrate the sharpness of all results.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent work of Wu and Yau on the ampleness of a canonical line bundle for projective manifolds with negative holomorphic sectional curvature, we introduce a new curvature notion called real bisectional curvature for Hermitian manifolds. When the metric is Kahler, this is just the holomorphic sectional curvature H, and when the metric is non-Kahler, it is slightly stronger than H. We classify compact Hermitian manifolds with constant nonzero real bisectional curvature, and also slightly extend Wu and Yau's theorem to the Hermitian case. The underlying reason for the extension is that the Schwarz lemma of Wu and Yau works the same when the target metric is only Hermitian but has nonpositive real bisectional curvature.

Abstract:Let M be a complete Riemannian manifold possibly with a boundary ∂M. For any C1-vector field Z, by using gradient/functional inequalities of the (reflecting) diffusion process generated by L:= Δ+Z, pointwise characterizations are presented for the Bakry-Emery curvature of L and the second fundamental form of ∂M if it exists. These characterizations extend and strengthen the recent results derived by Naber for the uniform norm ∥RicZ∥∞ on manifolds without boundaries. A key point of the present study is to apply the asymptotic formulas for these two tensors found by the first author, such that the proofs are significantly simplified.

Abstract:In this note, we study the relation between the existence of a negatively curved complete hermitian metric on a complex manifold M and the product structure of (or contained in) M. We introduce the concept of geometric ranks and give a curvature characterization of the rank one manifolds, which generalizes the previous results of P. Yang and N. Mok (see below). In the proof, we used the old techniques of Yau's Schwartz lemma and Cheng-Yau's result on the existence of Kahler-Einstein metrics.

Abstract:A Riemannian manifold (M n ,g) is associated with a Schouten (0,2)-tensor Cg which is a naturally defined Codazzi tensor in case (M n ,g) is a locally conformally flat Riemannian manifold. In this paper, we study the Riemannian functional F k [g] = f M σ k (C g )dvol g defined on M 1 = {g E M|Vol(g) = 1}, where M is the space of smooth Riemannian metrics on a compact smooth manifold M and {σ k (C g ), 1 5 and a conformally flat metric g is a critical point of F 2 |M 1 with F 2 [g] > 0, then g must have constant sectional curvature. This is a generalization of Gursky and Viaclovsky's very recent theorem that the critical point of F 2 |M 1 with F 2 [g] > 0 characterized the three-dimensional space forms.
The Sphere Theorems for Manifolds with Positive Scalar Curvature

Abstract:Some new differentiable sphere theorems are obtained via the Ricci flow and stable currents. We prove that if $M^n$ is a compact manifold whose normalized scalar curvature and sectional curvature satisfy the pointwise pinching condition $R_0>\sigma_{n}K_{\max}$, where $\sigma_n\in (\frac{1}{4},1)$ is an explicit positive constant, then $M$ is diffeomorphic to a spherical space form. This gives a partial answer to Yau's conjecture on pinching theorem. Moreover, we prove that if $M^n(n\geq3)$ is a compact manifold whose $(n-2)$-th Ricci curvature and normalized scalar curvature satisfy the pointwise condition $Ric^{(n-2)}_{\min}>\tau_n(n-2)R_0,$ where $\tau_n\in (\frac{1}{4},1)$ is an explicit positive constant, then $M$ is diffeomorphic to a spherical space form. We then extend the sphere theorems above to submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold. Finally we give a classification of submanifolds with weakly pinched curvatures, which improves the differentiable pinching theorems due to Andrews, Baker and the authors.
Kähler Manifolds and Cross Quadratic Bisectional Curvature

Abstract:In this article we continue the study of the two curvature notions for Kähler manifolds introduced by the first named author earlier: the so-called cross quadratic bisectional curvature (CQB) and its dual (^dCQB). We first show that compact Kähler manifolds with CQB_1>0 or ^dCQB_1>0 are Fano, while nonnegative CQB_1 or ^dCQB_1 leads to a Fano manifold as well, provided that the universal cover does not contain a flat de Rham factor. For the latter statement we employ the Kähler-Ricci flow to deform the metric. We conjecture that all Kähler C-spaces will have nonnegative CQB and positive ^dCQB. By giving irreducible such examples with arbitrarily large second Betti numbers we show that the positivity of these two curvature put no restriction on the Betti number. A strengthened conjecture is that any Kähler C-space will actually have positive CQB unless it is a ℙ^1 bundle. Finally we give an example of non-symmetric, irreducible Kähler C-space with b_2>1 and positive CQB, as well as compact non-locally symmetric Kähler manifolds with CQB<0 and ^dCQB<0.

Abstract:We give a characterization of Nakano positivity of Riemannian flat vector bundles over bounded domains $D\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ in terms of solvability of the $d$ equation with certain good $L^2$ estimate condition. As an application, we give an alternative proof of the matrix-valued Prekopa's theorem that is originally proved by Raufi. Our methods are inspired by the recent works of Deng-Ning-Wang-Zhou on characterization of Nakano positivity of Hermitian holomorphic vector bundles and positivity of direct image sheaves associated to holomorphic fibrations.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that, a compact complex manifold X admits a smooth Hermitian metric with positive (resp., negative) scalar curvature if and only if K-X (resp., K-X(-1)) is not pseudo-effective. On the contrary, we also show that on an arbitrary compact complex manifold X with complex dimension >= 2, there exist smooth Hermitian metrics with positive total scalar curvature, and one of the key ingredients in the proof relies on a recent solution to the Gauduchon conjecture by G. Szekelyhidi, V. Tosatti, and B. Weinkove.
