Abstract:In order to describe neuronal dynamics on different time-scales, we propose a stochastic model based on two coupled fractional stochastic differential equations, with different fractional orders. For the specified choice of involved functions and parameters, we provide three specific models, with/without leakage, with fractional/non-fractional correlated inputs. We give explicit expressions of the process representing the voltage variation in the neuronal membrane. Expectation values and covariances are given and compared. Numerical evaluations of the average behaviors of involved processes are presented and discussed.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve
The paper aims to describe the activities of neurons at different time scales by introducing two coupled fractional - order stochastic differential equations. Specifically, the paper proposes a fractional - order stochastic model based on two coupled fractional - order stochastic differential equations with different fractional orders. By choosing specific functions and parameters, the paper provides three specific models, which may or may not include leakage terms and can handle fractional - order or non - fractional - order related inputs.
### Main contributions
1. **Fractional - order stochastic model**: The paper proposes a new fractional - order stochastic model that can describe the activities of neurons at different time scales, especially when there are interactions and inputs of different natures.
2. **Mathematical generalization**: By using fractional - order calculus, this model makes a mathematical generalization of the existing stochastic models, making the model more refined and able to include more phenomenological evidence.
3. **Memory effect**: The non - local nature of the fractional - order operator allows the model to include the "memory" effect, which is very important for describing adaptation dynamics and other firing activities affected by memory.
4. **Specific models**: The paper discusses in detail three specific models, namely:
- Model 1: No leakage term, related input.
- Model 2: With leakage term, related input.
- Model 3: General fractional - order neuron model (FNM).
### Mathematical background
The mathematical tools used in the paper mainly include fractional - order calculus, fractional - order stochastic differential equations (FSDEs), Ornstein - Uhlenbeck (OU) process and Mittag - Leffler function. These tools are used to derive the specific form of the model and analyze its expected value and covariance.
### Biological interpretation
1. **Membrane voltage**: The neuronal membrane voltage \( V(t) \) is modeled as the fractional - order integral of the input process \( \eta(t) \), where \( \eta(t) \) can evolve at different time scales.
2. **Input process**: The input process \( \eta(t) \) can be regarded as synaptic inputs from other neurons and depends on an additional current term \( I \). This current term can be a constant, a periodic function or a random process, and its specific form reflects different physiological situations.
3. **Leakage term**: The leakage term \( g_L \) in the model represents the leakage current on the neuronal membrane, which is necessary in some cases, especially when describing the slow leakage behavior of neurons without external input.
### Conclusion
By introducing the fractional - order stochastic model, the paper provides a new method to describe the activities of neurons at different time scales. This model can not only include the memory effect, but also handle related inputs and dynamics at different time scales, thus providing new tools and perspectives for research in the field of neuroscience.
