Abstract:Due to the different scenarios for the practical applications of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars, FRP bars with different types of surface characteristics have emerged in recent years. Since the bond performance of FRP bars to concrete significantly depends on the geometric properties of bars, the bond strength of the FRP bars with different surface characteristics may differ considerably from each other. To explore the influence of bar surface types on the bond properties, a database including 407 pull-out test results of FRP bars with different surface types covering sand-coated (SC), helically wrapped (HW), ribbed (RB), and indented (IN) was assembled based on existing studies. The examination of the results reported in the database reveals that the effects of concrete compressive strength, concrete cover, embedment length and bar diameter on the bond properties of the deformed bars (i.e., HW, RB, IN bars) are more pronounced compared with SC bars in general, and these parameters exhibit moderate impact for HWSC and INSC bars as a result of the composite surface treatments. Finally, the performance of several existing models in predicting the bond strength between FRP bars and concrete are assessed and a new model is proposed by introducing several geometrical factors to quantify the effects of bar surface characteristics on the bond strength, which can give more accurate predictions of the existing test results.
