Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a key process in water electrolysis to produce hydrogen, but the development of highly active, stable and cost-effective monolith HER electrocatalysts by simple methods remains a great challenge. Here we report a compelling and powerful strategy to prepare a Ni enriched three-dimensional nanoporous NiAl catalyst which can be directly used as a highly active and long-lived HER electrode in acids. The electrode exhibits low onset overpotential of only -33 mV. Overpotentials of merely -157 mV and -226 mV are needed to reach current densites of -100 and -200 mA cm(-2), respectively, superior to recently reported state-of-art Ni-based monolith HER catalysts. The high activity is likely due to in situ obtained nanoporous structure with high surface area and nanosized Ni. Under a medium overpotential of - 335 mV, the electrode can sustain - 350 mA cm(-2) up to 60 h, showing good long-term stability at high current density. The favorable combination of the high activity, stability, facile preparation and low-cost makes the Ni enriched nanoporous NiAl a promising electrocatalyst for high-speed hydrogen production.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and durable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts composed of earth-abundant materials is crucial for large-scale electrochemical hydrogen production. Herein, interfacial chemistry engineering is employed to decouple the restriction of both water discharge and hydrogen adsorption free energy. And low valence state Niδ+ (δ < 1) is proposed as an efficient water-dissociation promoter based on our dual-descriptor method. Moreover, metallic and intrinsic HER-active Ni is introduced and a highly conductive edge-enriched Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni hybrid electrocatalyst is constructed. DFT calculations and microkinetics analysis demonstrate that the Ni site and Ni0.2Mo0.8N site have favorable hydroxyl and hydrogen species adsorption energetics, respectively, which can cooperate synergistically towards alkaline hydrogen evolution. The resulting electrocatalyst shows excellent HER electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of about 70 mV at 300 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 33 mV dec−1. It also offers outstanding operational stability at large current densities up to 200 mA cm−2. Further theoretical calculations suggest a tip-enhanced-like local electric field around the topmost Ni nanoparticles, leading to increased K-ion concentration in the inner Helmholtz plane. The HER kinetics and surface reactant density can be simultaneously improved by this hierarchical Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni electrocatalyst. This study might open up new avenues of reasonable design of hierarchical structures for superior electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Ni-based materials are cost-efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER). Specifically, high-valence nickel oxides have been recently identified as highly active for both reactions; however, the origin of their activity during operation, particularly towards the HER, is still undefined. Herein, electrodeposition was used to produce Ni-based electrocatalysts supported on carbon fiber paper, followed by UV/O3 treatment to oxidize and modify their surface chemistry. The resulting electrodes were composed of nanoclusters formed by a metallic nickel core and ultrathin sheets of a high-valence nickel oxide whose crystalline structure was similar to NiO2, with Ni2+/Ni3+ oxidation states. Upon investigating the effect of the electrochemical conditioning of these high-valence nickel oxide/nickel electrodes, confirming the formation of surface β-Ni(OH)2. This surface layer improved the performance of the electrode by providing active sites for H2O adsorption and dissociation, as indicated by detailed density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The origin of the higher HER activity of β-Ni(OH)2 (001) surface compared to NiO2 (2D), and Ni (111) surfaces is attributed to its unique electronic structure. The high valence nickel oxide/nickel electrodes possessed robust long-term OER and HER stability over 24h. Finally, the potential for modifying the structural composition of these electrodes and their use as bifunctional electrocatalysts for the water-splitting reaction was demonstrated by using the resulting electrodes in an electrolyzer coupled with/without a photovoltaic cell.

Abstract:Designing efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of great importance to advance water splitting technology towards practical applications. Herein, we report the preparation of IrCo nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon (IrCo/NC) as a HER electrocatalyst in acidic and alkaline electrolytes. The IrCo/NC composite is obtained by pyrolyzing an Ir-doped Co(OH)2 precursor on g-C3N4, and is endowed with N-doped carbon and uniform IrCo alloy nanoparticles via a crystal confinement resulting from the Ir-doping into the Co(OH)2 layer. Electrocatalytic analysis shows that the IrCo/NC electrode requires low overpotentials of 32 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 33 mV in 1 M KOH, which are superior to those of the Co/NC and IrCo alloys that are free of Ir-doping or N-doped carbon. The results provide a strategy for designing and preparing active noble-transition bimetallic alloy electrocatalysts as efficient HER catalysts.

Abstract:The exploitation of cost-efficient electrocatalysts is critical to develop the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for hydrogen production. Herein, Ni3S2/NF-x h (x = 12, 16 and 20, reaction time) nanocrystals in-situ grown on Ni foam (NF) were prepared via a facile hydrothermal method. The results demonstrate that the reaction time plays key roles in the morphology, the hydrogen evolution performance of the samples, and the hydrogen brittleness of NF substrate. Interestingly, the Ni3S2/NF-16 h displays outstanding catalytic activity for HER in alkaline solution and avoids the hydrogen brittleness of the NF skeletons simultaneously. To afford a catalytic current of 20 mA·cm−2, Ni3S2/NF-16 h presents ultra-low overpotential of 48 mV for hydrogen evolution and sufficient stability for 40 h. Moreover, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the excellent electrocatalytic HER activity of Ni3S2 could be attributed to its exposed (015) plane, which exhibited good capability for water adsorption and dissociation in an alkaline electrolyte, leading to the optimal free energy for H* adsorption. The present work offers a novel strategy to design, synthesize and develop highly efficient electrocatalysts for HER.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Typically, the direct electrolysis of alkaline seawater for hydrogen production is very attractive, but it poses challenges due to the high energy barrier and slow reaction kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline environments. The key to promising solutions lies in the design and development of non-precious metal catalysts with abundant reaction sites, robust stability, and resistance to Cl − corrosion. Hence, we demonstrated the fabrication of core–shell heterogeneous nanorods supported on nickel foam (/NF). These hydrophilic self-supporting nanorod arrays, functioning as binder-free HER electrocatalysts, provide numerous reactive sites and facilitate electron/mass transfer. The conductive core of NiTe promotes rapid electron transfer from NF substrate to NiS. The coupling interface with the heteroatom Mo synergistically modulates the electronic structure of the NiS shell, optimizing the adsorption/dissociation of H 2 O and improving the reaction kinetics. As a result, /NF exhibits excellent HER performance and outstanding long-term stability, requiring only 34 and 57 mV of overpotential to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH and alkaline seawater, respectively. Additionally, it exhibits a Faraday efficiency of nearly 100% for hydrogen production and excellent long-cycle stability. Notably, the (−)||RuO 2 (+) couples outperform Pt/C(−)||RuO 2 (+) couples and exhibit excellent stability.

Abstract:Exploring cheap, efficient and stable electro-catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a vital technology for seawater splitting development. Herein, we demonstrate that constructing underlying Cu2S nanorod arrays is crucial for improving the HER activity of surface Ni catalyst. Electrochemical results reveal that nickel coated Cu2S nanoarrays (Cu2) on copper foam exhibits a preferable HER activity (~500 mA cm−2 at <200 mV overpotential), outperforming Cu2 and pure Ni counterparts. Detailed analyses indicate that the enhanced HER activity of Cu2 can be attributed to Ni–S interaction between surface nickel and underlying Cu2S nanorods, which optimizes the adsorption energy of hydrogen on the surface. Moreover, the Cu2 nanoarray electrode shows a remarkable HER stability, highlighting its promising potential in alkaline seawater electrolysis.

Abstract:The electrocatalyst NiFeRuO x /NF, comprised of NiFeRuO x nanosheets grown on Ni foam, was synthesized using a hydrothermal process followed by thermal annealing. NiFeRuO x /NF displays high electrocatalytic activity and stability for overall alkaline seawater splitting: 98 mV@ 10 mA·cm −2 in hydrogen evolution reaction, 318 mV@ 50 mA·cm −2 in oxygen evolution reaction, and a cell voltage of 1.53 V@ 10 mA·cm −2 , as well as 20 h of durability. A solar-driven system containing such a bifunctional NiFeRuO x /NF has an almost 100% Faradaic efficiency. The NiFeRuO x coating around Ni foam is an anti-corrosion layer and also a critical factor for enhancement of bifunctional performances.

Abstract:The development of an efficient and cost-effective electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) that can be widely applied in industrial settings poses a multifaceted challenge. This research involved fabricating a NiCo-LDH/Cu electrode as a self-supported catalyst for hydrogen evolution on nickel foam using a solvothermal method and constant potential electrodeposition. In comparison to the NiCu electrocatalyst produced through a single-step electrodeposition, the NiCo-LDH/Cu hydrogen evolution electrode prepared via this combined approach exhibited significant electrocatalytic performance for HER in an alkaline electrolyte. The NiCo-LDH/Cu catalytic electrode requires only an overpotential of 78.0 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 in 1 M KOH. The current density required to catalyze the hydrogenation reaction is reduced by 64 % compared to pure nickel foam. This reduction accelerates the hydrogenation catalytic reaction and enhances electrochemical stability. The remarkable HER efficiency of the NiCo-LDH/Cu catalytic electrode primarily stems from the increased active surface area facilitated by the LDH structure and the synergistic impact generated during the NiCu co-deposition process. This work shows an economical and practical method for developing efficient non-precious metal catalytic electrodes.

Abstract:Low cost and highly efficient non-noble metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are crucially important for the commercial production of hydrogen. In the present work, we prepared a nanoporous NiO/Al3Ni2 catalyst using a facile electrochemical dealloying method. Due to the large surface area, fast gas releasing, and the synergistic effects of NiO and Al3Ni2, the nanoporous NiO/Al3Ni2 catalyst exhibits remarkable HER activity with the overpotential of 66 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and good long-time stability in alkaline conditions. The nanoporous NiO/Al3Ni2 catalyst has higher current density than the commercial Pt/C under high overpotential over 105 mV. Ni sites on the exposed active (100) surface of Al3Ni2 exhibit a moderate hydrogen adsorption energy. NiO effectively promotes water splitting and prevents intermediate poisoning on the Al3Ni2 active sites. Al3Ni2 improves the conductivity of the catalyst. This work provides a guidance for the design and development of non-noble HER electrocatalysts.
Regulation of the electronic structure of a RuNi/MoC electrocatalyst for high-efficiency hydrogen evolution in alkaline seawater

Abstract:Alkaline seawater electrolysis offers a way to generate hydrogen without carbon emissions. However, developing highly efficient catalysts that can sustain high performance and stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline seawater is a formidable challenge. Here, a nanowire (NW) of a RuNi/MoC heterojunction embedded in N-doped carbon (RuNi/MoC@NC) was developed as a potent HER catalyst. The catalyst required only 21 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for HER in alkaline seawater, which surpasses 20% Pt/C. Moreover, using nickel foam (NF) as a catalyst carrier, an electrolyzer composed of RuNi/MoC@NC and nickel–iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) needed only 1.81 V at 500 mA cm −2 for full water splitting and showed long-term stability (over 500 h). Theoretical calculation revealed that the Ru and Ni sites in the catalyst had the optimal adsorption energy for hydrogen and water, respectively, which synergistically lowered the energy barrier for HER. This work offered an efficient method to design a highly effective HER catalyst for alkaline seawater splitting.

Abstract:Developing efficient non-precious electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a challenge for green and sustainable generation of energy. Herein, we report a self-standing nanoporous (np-) NiAlTi/Al3Ti hybrid catalyst prepared by a simple dealloying method. By constructing the nanoscale heterostructure, np-NiAlTi/Al3Ti exhibits outstanding HER performance. In the np-NiAlTi/Al3Ti hybrid, amorphous NiAlTi serves as the active phase, while the conductive Al3Ti support affords an effective electron pathway. Meanwhile, the nanoporous electrode possesses abundant active sites and large contact areas for an efficient HER. As a result, the np-NiAlTi/Al3Ti hybrid delivers a small overpotential of 73 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm(-2), along with good stability in alkaline media. Our work would provide a feasible strategy to explore efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for energy conversion applications.

Abstract:Acidic proton exchange membrane water electrolysis is a prospective energy conversion technology for future hydrogen production. However, its wide application is limited by the excessive dependence of oxygen evolution reaction on precious metals at anode. To address this issue, herein, we report a class of IrM (M = Ni, Co, Fe) catalysts with diluted Ir content fabricated via a eutectic-directed self-templating strategy. Manipulated by the eutectic reaction and dealloying inheritance effect, the IrM catalysts show a unique network structure composed of intertwining nanoporous nanowires. The catalytic activities of IrM nanowires show a transition-metal-dependent feature, among which IrNi delivers the best activity with an exceptionally low overpotential to drive 10 mA cm-2 (283 mV) and a high mass activity at 1.53 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (0.732 A mg-1). Such performance represents a major leap forward compared to that of commercial IrO2 and most of state-of-the-art Ir-based acidic catalysts toward oxygen evolution reaction. First-principles calculations indicate that the 3d transition-metal-dependent catalytic activity of IrM electrocatalysts is related to ligand effect, wherein the negative shift of Ir d-band center after alloying can effectively weaken the adsorption of reaction intermediates.

Abstract:Considerable efforts have been devoted on the design and fabrication of non-platinum electrocatalysts with high performance and low cost for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the catalytic activity of existing electrocatalysts usually subjects to the limited amount of exposed active sites. Herein, we propose that self-assembled ultrathin NiCo2S4 nanoflakes grown on nickel foam (NiCo2S4/Ni foam) can serve as excellent electrocatalyst for HER in alkaline solution with high activity and stability. The NiCo2S4/Ni foam electrodes were prepared by the complete sulfidation of networked ultrathin NiCo-layered double hydroxide nanoflakes grown on Ni foam (NiCo-LDH/Ni foam). The advantages of this unique architecture are that the ultrathin and porous NiCo2S4 nanoflakes can provide a huge number of exposed active sites, the highly-conductive Ni foam can promote the transfer of electrons, and the three-dimensional-networked structure can facilitate the diffusion and penetration of electrolyte. Electrochemical measurements reveal that NiCo2S4/Ni foam electrodes exhibit greatly improved performance than NiCo-LDH/Ni foam for HER in alkaline solution with low onset overpotential (17mV), small Tafel slope (84.5mV/dec) and excellent long-duration cycling stability (maintaining an onset overpotential of ~20mV and an overpotential of 155mV at 50mA/cm2 after testing for 100,000s). In addition, the highly-flexible NiCo2S4/Ni foam electrodes show no obvious catalytic degradation after bending for 200 times, confirming the high flexibility and robustness under severe conditions.
Ir nanoparticles decorated NiFe metal-organic framework as highly efficient and stable heterostructural electrocatalysts for overall seawater splitting

Abstract:Developing a bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall seawater splitting is crucial for advancing sustainable hydrogen (H2) production. However, at industrial current densities, anodic chlorine chemical corrosion and cathodic sluggish hydrogen evolution kinetics will seriously hinder the system of seawater-to-H2. Herein, we present a heterojunction electrocatalyst synthesized via hydrothermal methods to create ultrathin NiFe-MOF nanosheets on nickel foam, followed by the deposition of Ir nanoparticles through a redox strategy (Ir@NiFe-MOF/NF). Ir@NiFe-MOF/NF demonstrates exceptional alkaline seawater oxidation and reduction properties, achieving a current density of 1000 mA cm−2 with overpotentials of 445 and 233 mV. Additionally, it requires only a voltage of 2.11 V to drive 250 mA cm−2 in a membrane electrode device and operates stably for 400 hours in alkaline seawater, surpassing other recently reported bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Seawater, a plentiful natural resource, is promising for hydrogen production compared to traditional electrocatalytic methods based on high-purity freshwater. This strategy shift addresses the challenge of limited freshwater resources and holds significant potential for desalination applications. Hence, identifying effective electrocatalysts for seawater electrolysis is imperative to alleviate freshwater resource scarcity and achieve large-scale hydrogen production. Herein, we report a catalyst comprising zero-dimensional (0D) nitrogen-doped carbon-coated FeNi3 nano-particles (FeNi3-NC) grown on NiFeOx nano-sheets for hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline seawater. The combination of FeNi3-NC and NiFeOx significantly enhances interfacial interactions, resulting in an elevated rate of electron transfer. The FeNi3-NC/NiFeOx catalyst requires a low overpotential of 65 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline seawater. In addition, the electrolytic cell constructed by it and its precursor also exhibits excellent water-splitting characteristics and it exhibits remarkable long-term stability and corrosion resistance. This discovery presents an innovative approach for designing zero-dimensional/two-dimensional catalysts to facilitate large-scale hydrogen production through seawater electrolysis.

Abstract:The development of cheap and highly active electrocatalysts for efficient water splitting is crucial for the production of green hydrogen at a low cost. In this work, we proposed a two-step method including hydrothermal and nitridation reactions to in situ synthesize NiMoN nanorod arrays with abundant active sites and a fast electron transfer rate on nickel foam substrate. The optimal tailoring of the Ni/Mo ratio leads to a high concentration of active Mo3+ species and suitable Ni doping content in the NiMoN catalyst, which shows superior hydrogen evolution reaction performance. The overpotentials at the current densities of 10 and 100 mA/cm2 are only 20 and 46 mV, which are better than those of the most reported NiMoN-based catalysts and even the commercial benchmark material of Pt/C. Additionally, the electrocatalyst also shows excellent long-term stability after 24 h tests at densities of 10 and 100 mA/cm2, possessing great potential for industrial applications for water splitting to produce hydrogen.

Abstract:Hetero‐interface engineering has been widely employed to develop supported multi‐component catalysts for water electrolysis, but it still remains a substantial challenge for supported single atom alloys. Herein we report a conductive oxide MoO2 supported Ir1Ni single atom alloys (Ir1Ni@MoO2 SAAs) bifunctional electrocatalysts through surface segregation coupled with galvanic replacement reaction, where the Ir atoms are atomically anchored onto the surface of Ni nanoclusters via the Ir‐Ni coordination accompanied with electron transfer from Ni to Ir. Benefiting from the unique structure, the Ir1Ni@MoO2 SAAs not only exhibit low overpotential of 48.6 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and Tafel slope of 19 mV/dec for hydrogen evolution reaction, but also show highly efficient alkaline water oxidation with overpotential of 280 mV at 10 mA/cm2. Their overall water electrolysis exhibits a low cell voltage of 1.52 V at 10 mA/cm2 and excellent durability. Experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the Ir‐Ni interface effectively weakens hydrogen binding energy, and decoration of the Ir single atoms boost surface reconstruction of Ni species to enhance the coverage of intermediates (OH*) and switch the potential‐determining step. We suggest that this approach opens up a promising avenue to design efficient and durable precious metal bifunctional electrocatalysts. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved
