Abstract:Recent progress in addressing electrically driven single‐molecule behaviors has opened up a path toward the controllable fabrication of molecular devices. Herein, the selective fabrication of single‐molecule junctions is achieved by employing the external electric field. For molecular junctions with methylthio (–SMe), thioacetate (–SAc), amine (–NH2), and pyridyl (–PY), the evolution of their formation probabilities along with the electric field is extracted from the plateau analysis of individual single‐molecule break junction traces. With the increase of the electric field, the SMe‐anchored molecules show a different trend in the formation probability compared to the other molecular junctions, which is consistent with the density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, switching from an SMe‐anchored junction to an SAc‐anchored junction is realized by altering the electric field in a mixed solution. The results in this work provide a new approach to the controllable fabrication and modulation of single‐molecule junctions and other bottom‐up nanodevices at molecular scales.

Abstract:Electronic transport through molecular-scale devices has been studied extensively for its extraordinary dimension superiority. Assembling such devices into large-scale functional circuits is crucial since the molecular tunnel junctions must be reliable, stable and reproducible during technological applications. In ideal circumstances, the device architecture should be designed such that the metal-molecule-metal (MMM) junctions can be analyzed by the more sensitive four point probe system. In this paper, we expound a delicate method to manufacture molecular junctions, which show excellent stability and reproducibility with high yields (>91 per cent). We form self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on conductive Au thin film by microcontact printing and then generate robust covalently bound metal thin film electrodes on top of the SAMs by selective electroless deposition. Following MMM junction formation, a photoresist is coated and wells are opened on each feature by lithography. Then, Au thin film, as a permanent top electrode, is deposited into the photolithographically defined well. Conductivity analyzations were carried out on the 50 μm square junctions by the four point probe measurement, and the results showed reproducible tunneling I-V characteristics. This method reveals an approach not only offering a unique vehicle to investigate the electrical properties of molecule ensembles in MMMs, but also making a significant step toward MMM applications at the device level.

Abstract:Abstract The developments of advanced manufacturing have promoted the miniaturization of semiconductor electronic devices into a near-atomic scale, which continuously follows the “top-down” construction method. However, huge challenges have be encountered with the exponentially increased cost and inevitably prominent quantum effects. Molecular electronics is a highly-interdisciplinary subject that studies the quantum behavior of electrons tunneling in molecules. It aims to assemble electronic devices in a "bottom-up" manner on this scale through a single molecule, thereby shedding lights on the future design of logic circuits with new operating principles. The core technologies in this field are based on the rapid development of the precise fabrication at molecular scale, regulation at quantum scale and related applications of the basic electronic component of "electrode-molecule-electrode junction". Therefore, the quantum charge transport properties of the molecule can be controlled to pave the way for the bottom-up construction of single-molecule devices. The review firstly focuses on the collection and classification of construction methods of molecular junctions. Thereafter, various characterization and regulation methods for molecular junctions are discussed, then the properties based on tunneling theory at quantum scale from the corresponding molecular electronic devices have been introduced. Finally, a summary and perspective are given to discuss further challenges and opportunities for future design of electronic devices.

Abstract:Molecular electronics is a promising subject to overcome the size limitation of silicon‐based electronic devices. In the past decades, various micro/nanofabrication techniques have been developed for constructing molecular junctions, and a number of breakthroughs are made in the characterizations and applications of the single‐molecule device. The history and progress are reviewed in this article, laying emphasis on the recent works on the combination of micro/nanofabrication techniques with other techniques such as electrochemical deposition and surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Some prototypical single‐molecule devices such as molecular transistors are presented. Finally, the challenges and prospects in the fabrication of single‐molecule devices are discussed.

Abstract:We report a simple and reproducible method for fabricating heterometallic nanogaps, which are made of two different metal nanorods separated by a nanometer-sized gap. The method is based upon on-wire lithography, which is a chemically enabled technique used to synthesize a wide variety of nanowire-based structures (e.g., nanogaps and disk arrays). This method can be used to fabricate pairs of metallic electrodes, which exhibit distinct work functions and are separated by gaps as small as 2 nm. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a symmetric thiol-terminated molecule can be assembled into such heterometallic nanogaps to form molecular transport junctions (MTJs) that exhibit molecular diode behavior. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the coupling strength between gold and sulfur (Au-S) is 2.5 times stronger than that of Pt-S. In addition, the structures form Raman hot spots in the gap, allowing the spectroscopic characterization of the molecules that make up the MTJs.

Abstract:The development of miniaturized electronics has led to the design and construction of powerful experimental platforms capable of measuring electronic properties to the level of single molecules, along with new theoretical concepts to aid in the interpretation of the data. A new area of activity is now emerging concerned with repurposing the tools of molecular electronics for applications in chemical and biological analysis. Single-molecule junction techniques, such as the scanning tunnelling microscope break junction and related single-molecule circuit approaches have a remarkable capacity to transduce chemical information from individual molecules, sampled in real time, to electrical signals. In this Review, we discuss single-molecule junction approaches as emerging analytical tools for the chemical and biological sciences. We demonstrate how these analytical techniques are being extended to systems capable of probing chemical reaction mechanisms. We also examine how molecular junctions enable the detection of RNA, DNA, and traces of proteins in solution with limits of detection at the zeptomole level.

Abstract:By wiring molecules into circuits, "molecular electronics" aims at studying electronic properties of single molecules and their ensembles, on this basis exploiting their intrinsic functionalities, and eventually applying them as building blocks of electronic components for future electronic devices. Herein,fabricating reliable solid-state molecular devices and developing synthetic molecules endowed with desirable electronic properties, have been two major tasks since the dawn of molecular electronics. This review focuses on recent advances and efforts regarding the main challenges in this field, highlighting fabrication of nanogap electrodes for single-molecule junctions, and self-assembled-monolayers（SAMs）for functional devices. The prospect of molecular-scale electronics is also discussed.

Abstract:The design, synthesis, and fabrication of functional nanomaterials with specific properties remain a long-standing goal for many scientific fields. The self-assembly of sequence-defined biomimetic synthetic polymers presents a fundamental strategy to explore the chemical space beyond biological systems to create advanced nanomaterials. Moreover, subsequent chemical modification of existing nanostructures is a unique approach for accessing increasingly complex nanostructures and introducing functionalities. Of these modifications, covalent conjugation chemistries, such as the click reactions, have been the cornerstone for chemists and materials scientists. Herein, we highlight some recent advances that have successfully employed click chemistries for the postmodification of assembled one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures to achieve applications in molecular recognition, mineralization, and optoelectronics. Specifically, biomimetic nanomaterials assembled from sequence-defined macromolecules such as peptides and peptoids are described.

Abstract:The efficiency of charge transport across a molecular bridge, such as a self-assembled monolayer (SAM), in molecular electronics is influenced not only by the molecules' structural configuration but also significantly by the choice of electrode materials. Single-layered graphene (SLG), a novel electrode material, offers unique benefits for forming such junctions, including exceptional flexibility, high transparency, and elevated carrier mobility. Notably, the work function of SLG can be modulated through p-type or n-type doping. In this study, we used our previously reported micro-well devices to fabricate Au/SAM/SLG junctions. Two types of SAMs were employed: one forming a HOMO-dominated junction, while the other formed a LUMO-dominated junction. These SAMs were coupled with three variants of chemical vapor deposited (CVD) SLG: as-transferred, n-type doped, and p-type doped, yielding six distinct combinations. Our results show that doping effectively adjusts the relative energetic position of the Fermi level between the graphene electrode and the molecular frontier orbitals, thereby controlling the quantum transport efficiency through the molecular bridge. These findings open new possibilities for designing high-performance molecular electronic devices such as biosensors, field-effect transistors, and thermoelectric harvesters.

Abstract:In miniaturized electronic and optoelectronic circuits, molecular tunnel junctions have attracted enormous research interest due to their small footprint, low power consumption, and rich molecular functions. However, the most popular building blocks used in contemporary molecular tunnel junctions are thiol molecules, which attach to electrode surfaces via a metal‐thiolate (M‐S) bond, showing low stability and usually quick degradation within several days. To pave the way for more widely applicable and stable molecular tunnel junctions, there is a need to develop new molecular anchoring groups. Here, we demonstrate robust and air‐stable molecular tunnel junctions with a sub‐5 nanometer bis(diarylcarbene)‐based thin film as the tunnelling barrier, which anchors to the electrode surface via a Au‐C bond. The bis(diarylcarbene)‐based molecular tunnel junctions exhibit high thermal stability against heating up to 200°C and long storage lifetime over 5 months in an ambient environment. Both electrical and optical performance of these bis(diarylcarbene)‐based molecular junctions were characterized systematically, showing similar behaviours to thiol‐based junctions as well as largely improved emission stability. This research highlights the excellent performance of bis(diarylcarbene)‐based molecular tunnel junctions, which could be useful for applications in molecular electronics and plasmonics. Abstract:Intramolecular junctions can be formed in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by introducing a pentagon and/or heptagon into the hexagonal carbon lattice. The realization of these carbon-based molecular electronics is still quite challenging. Here, it is reported that nickel or cobalt catalyzed etching can be applied to partially unzip an SWNT into an intermolecular junction of SWNT/graphene nanoribbon, directly confirmed by atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy.
Functional Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube-based Molecular Devices

Abstract:Because of the nature of their one-dimensional structure, good conductivity and excellent ballistic transport property, single-walled carbon nanotubes have been considered as an important nanomaterial in building a new generation of electrical circuits. In this article, we mainly focus on two strategies developed for installing diverse functionalities into single-walled carbon nanotube-based molecular transistors: nanolithographic method and surface chemical modification. To overcome ill-defined contacts between molecules and electrodes, we highlight the current effort and direction in the creation of reliable single-molecule devices using carboxylic acid-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes as nanogapped point contacts. These contacts are made by high-resolution electron beam lithography and oxygen plasma oxidative etching. Electrically functional molecules are then covalently bridged into the nanogaps through robust amide linkages, thus forming stable molecular electronic devices. These results open up new opportunities to develop unique single-molecule biosensors with high selectivity and high speed, which hold great promise in both industrial applications and basic scientific researches.

Abstract:Click chemistry is combinatorial synthesis on the basis of heteroatom linkage C-X-C. As a typical example of sustainable and green organic synthetic strategy for constructing functional organic/polymeric materials, it has aroused extensive interest among materials scientists in recent years. In this review, some basic conceptions of click chemistry and its category are introduced, and various organic/polymeric optoelectrical materials, supramolecular assemblies, molecular machine and recognition systems, as well as stimuli-responsive systems are summarized in detail. Finally, Friedel-Crafts type click chemistry and its future trend are prospected.
Molecular electronic devices based on single-walled carbon nanotube electrodes

Abstract:As the top-down fabrication techniques for silicon-based electronic materials have reached the scale of molecular lengths, researchers have been investigating nanostructured materials to build electronics from individual molecules. Researchers have directed extensive experimental and theoretical efforts toward building functional optoelectronic devices using individual organic molecules and fabricating metal-molecule junctions. Although this method has many advantages, its limitations lead to large disagreement between experimental and theoretical results. This Account describes a new method to create molecular electronic devices, covalently bridging a gap in a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) with an electrically functional molecule. First, we introduce a molecular-scale gap into a nanotube by precise oxidative cutting through a lithographic mask. Now functionalized with carboxylic acids, the ends of the cleaved carbon nanotubes are reconnected with conjugated diamines to give robust diamides. The molecular electronic devices prepared in this fashion can withstand and respond to large environmental changes based on the functional groups in the molecules. For example, with oligoanilines as the molecular bridge, the conductance of the device is sensitive to pH. Similarly, using diarylethylenes as the bridge provides devices that can reversibly switch between conjugated and nonconjugated states. The molecular bridge can perform the dual task of carrying electrical current and sensing/recognition through biological events such as protein/substrate binding and DNA hybridization. The devices based on DNA can measure the difference in electrical properties of complementary and mismatched strands. A well-matched duplex DNA 15-mer in the gap exhibits a 300-fold lower resistance than a duplex with a GT or CA mismatch. This system provides an ultrasensitive way to detect single-nucleotide polymorphisms at the individual molecule level. Restriction enzymes can cleave certain cDNA strands assembled between the SWNT electrodes; therefore, these strands maintain their native conformation when bridging the ends of the SWNTs. This methodology for creating novel molecular circuits forges both literal and figurative connections between chemistry, physics, materials science, and biology and promises a new generation of integrated multifunctional sensors and devices.
Ultra-highly conductive optoelectronic modulated single-molecule nickel bis(dithiolene) junctions with strong molecule-electrode coupling

Abstract:Strong molecule-electrode coupling originating from orbit hybridization between gold and the delocalized molecular wires in single-molecule junctions facilitates facile transport towards smart molecular devices. In this paper, we report ultra-highly conductive single-molecule circuits based on highly delocalized nickel bis(dithiolene) (NiS 4 ) molecular junctions using scanning tunneling microscope break junction technique. Single-molecule charge transport measurement of both NiS 4 reveals they exhibits high conductance of 10 −1.49 G 0 and 10 −1.51 G 0 , respectively. Moreover, under intervention of high bias voltage the molecular conductance could be further improved to approximately 10 −1.00 G 0 , the highest value reported to date with similar molecular lengths. Theoretical calculations suggest that the strong hybridization of the π-channels and the gold electrodes in both junctions exists and it further extends from molecule-electrode interfaces to metal electrodes as visualized by the isosurface plots of the transmitting eigenstate, which lead to not only a distinct energy shift of the dominated LUMO peaks toward Fermi level, but also broad peaks in the LUMO resonance in the transmission functions. In addition, the both molecular junctions show remarkable photoconductance of approximately 10 −1.00 G 0 under resonant light excitation, due to possible exciton binding in these junctions. Interestingly, the conductance switching of both molecular junctions under optoelectronic modulation is highly reversible, forming a multi-stimulus responsive molecular switch. This work not only provides a building block for fabricating highly conducting molecular wires with strong molecule-electrode coupling, but also lays a foundation for designing optoelectronic modulated functional molecule-scale devices.

Abstract:Quantum tunneling plays an important role in coupled plasmonic nanocavities with ultrasmall gap distances. It can lead to intriguing applications such as plasmon mode excitation, hot carrier generation, and construction of ultracompact electro-optic devices. Molecular junctions bridging plasmonic nanocavities can provide a tunneling channel at moderate gap distances and therefore allow for the facile fabrication of quantum plasmonic devices. Herein we report on the large-scale bottom-up fabrication of molecular junction-bridged plasmonic nanocavities formed from Au nanoplate-Au nanosphere heterodimers. When the molecular junction turns from insulating to conductive, a distinct spectral change is observed, together with the emergence of a high-order charge transfer plasmon mode. The evolution of the electron tunneling-induced plasmon mode also greatly affects the Fano resonance feature in the scattering spectrum of the individual heterodimers. The molecular conductance at optical frequencies is estimated. The molecular junction-assisted electron tunneling is further verified by the reduced surface-enhanced Raman intensities of the molecules in the plasmonic nanocavity. We believe that our results provide an interesting system that can boost the investigation on the use of molecular junctions to modulate quantum plasmon resonances and construct molecular plasmonic devices.

Abstract:On-wire lithography (OWL) fabricated nanogaps are used a new testbed to construct molecular transport junctions (MT Js) through the assemble of thiolated molecular wires across a nanogap formed between two Au electrodes. In addition, we show that one can use OWL to rapidly charcaterize a MTJ and optimize gap size for two molecular wires of different dimensions. Finally, we have used this new testbed to identify unsual temperature-dependent transport mechanisms for a,w-dithiol termianted oligo (phenylene ethynylend).

Abstract:Developing new materials is a long-standing goal that extends across the fields of synthesis, catalysis, nanotechnology and materials science. Transforming one compound or material into another involves the gaining, losing and sharing of electrons at a molecular level. Investigating single-molecule reactions — and understanding how they provide information about or differ from reactions in the bulk — will deepen our understanding of chemical reactions and establish new frameworks in materials science. In this Review, we survey state-of-the-art chemical reactions occurring in single-molecule junctions. We explore the advantages of real-time testbeds that deliver detailed information about reaction dynamics, intermediates, transition states and solvent effects. We provide a quantitative perspective of the charge transport phenomena associated with chemical reactions at molecular tunnelling junctions, and we compare the behaviour of single-molecule reactions and those taking place in ensemble states. Finally, we explore the possibility of leveraging single-molecule catalysis for large-scale production of materials.

Abstract:We report here a method to integrate discrete multicomponent assembly into molecular electronic devices. We first functionalize a molecule wired between the ends of a single-walled carbon nanotube so that it can be derivatized with a probe molecule. This probe then binds to a complementary biomolecule to form a noncovalent complex. Each step of chemical functionalization and biological assembly can be detected electrically at the single event level. Through this combination of programmed chemical reactions and molecular recognition, we are able to create complex multimeric nanostructures incorporating isolated metallic nanoparticles.

Abstract:This work reports on a new method to fabricate mechanically controllable break junctions (MCBJ) with finely adjustable nanogaps between two gold electrodes on solid state chips for characterizing electron transport properties of single molecules. The simple, low cost, robust and reproducible fabrication method combines conventional photolithography, chemical etching and electrodeposition to produce suspended electrodes separated with nanogaps. The MCBJ devices fabricated by the method can undergo many cycles in which the nanogap width can be precisely and repeatedly varied from zero to several nanometers. The method improves the success rate of the MCBJ experiments. Using these devices the electron transport properties of a typical molecular system, commercially available benzene-1,4-dithiol (BDT), have been studied. The I-V and G-V characteristic curves of BDT and the conductance value for a single BDT molecule established the excellent device suitability for molecular electronics research.
