Abstract:Through gasification and methanol synthesis, biomass can produce methanol and then produce light olefins through the methanol-to-hydrocarbon (MTH) process. To make this new biomass based production route profitable, the efficiency of the MTH process is important. Catalyst deactivation is the main reason for the decline of conversion and selectivity. NMR was applied to detect the relaxation and diffusion of liquid molecules in a series of coked ZSM-5, investigating the effect of coke on molecular transport properties. n-Heptane was chosen as a probe molecule in describing pore network connectivity, whereas methanol was used for relaxation measurements. Though there were only minor differences of pore connectivity among the samples, the longitudinal relaxation time showed an almost linear relationship with coke contents, suggesting that the interaction between reactants and catalyst surface influences the catalyst performance within low coke contents. PFG-NMR and NMR relaxation, as fast and straightforward measurements, could simulate catalyst behaviors during the reaction process.

Abstract:The deactivation mechanism of HZSM-5 zeolite in the co-cracking of n-hexane and alcohols was studied. The fresh and spent catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, NH3-TPD, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), 13C MAS NMR, and H2-TPR. The results showed that the internal coke is preferentially formed in the zeolite micropores in the initial reaction stage, leading to the partial deactivation of catalyst. The addition of alcohols to n-hexane significantly promoted the formation of external coke, which hardly had effect on the cracking activity. H2 treatment to the spent catalyst at 800 °C could effectively remove the internal coke of the catalyst, while the external coke with a graphite-like structure still kept stable. Methylated aromatics were considered coke precursors. It was reasonably proposed that methylated aromatics condense to polyaromatic structures as internal coke in the presence of acid sites, but their growth is limited by the catalyst channel structure. This work demonstrated that zeolite deactivation behavior was affected by the location, amount, and type of coke. The formation mechanism of internal and external coke as well as the H2 decoking to generate deactivated catalyst were discussed.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:The presence of ethanol as an impurity in industrial methanol significantly degrades the quality of the downstream products. Addressing the challenge of suppressing ethanol formation remains crucial in the synthesis of industrial methanol. In this context, we systematically characterized a series of commercial catalysts and evaluated their catalytic performance for methanol synthesis to elucidate the relationship between the catalyst structure and ethanol selectivity. Our performance tests indicate that the Cu-Zn-Al commercial catalyst (NG), enhanced with a ZrO2 promoter, can effectively inhibit ethanol formation, reducing it to approximately 580 ppm after 1000 h. The ZrO2 promoter stabilizes Cu-0, ensuring it is highly dispersed and maintains a homogeneous structure, which is pivotal for the catalyst's exceptional performance. Analysis through temperature-programmed desorption and density functional theory (DFT) demonstrates that the high dispersity of Cu-0 enhances the adsorption of CO and H-2. Additionally, a uniform Cu-0 active site structure contributes to the increased methanol selectivity while simultaneously suppressing ethanol formation. This study underscores the significant potential of incorporating a ZrO2 promoter in catalysts to effectively suppress ethanol production under industrial operating conditions.
Coking Behavior of Submicron ZSM-5 Zeolite Catalyst in Dehydration of Ethanol to Ethylene

Abstract:Reactions and coking behaviors of ethanol, diethyl ether or ethylene on a submicron ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst, which was used in dehydration of ethanol to ethylene, were studied in a fix-bed reactor. The coking behavior and the dehydration mechanism were analyzed by means of TG, N2 adsorption-desorption techniques, pyridine adsorption FTIR and 13C NMR. Experimental results showed that diethyl ether was an intermediate of the ethanol dehydration to ethylene and that ethylene oligomerization was responsible for the coke formation. The coke might consist mainly of alkyl aromatics and the coke deposition rate was correlated to the olefin content and the water content in the reaction mixture. The coke deposition rate on the ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst lowered in the following order: ethylene > ethylene and water > diethyl ether > ethanol, which were used as feeds separately. After 100 h on stream, the coke deposits blocked more than 70% of the catalyst pores, and consumed more than 80% of acid sites on the catalyst, which caused a loss of catalyst activity.
Synergetic Regulation of the Microstructure and Acidity of HZSM-5/MCM-41 for Efficient Catalytic Cracking of n-Decane

Abstract:Alkane catalytic cracking is regarded as one of the most significant processes for light olefin production; however, it suffers from serve catalyst deactivation due to coke formation. Herein, HZSM-5/MCM-41 composites with different Si/Al2 ratios were first prepared by the hydrothermal method. The physicochemical properties of the prepared catalysts were analyzed by a series of bulk and surface characterization methods, and the catalytic performance was tested in n-decane catalytic cracking. It was found that HZSM-5/MCM-41 showed a higher selectivity to light olefins and a lower deactivation rate compared with the parent HZSM-5 due to an enhanced diffusion rate and decreased acid density. Moreover, the structure-reactivity relationship revealed that conversion, light olefin selectivity, and the deactivation rate strongly depended on the total acid density. Furthermore, HZSM-5/MCM-41 was further extruded with γ-Al2O3 to obtain the catalyst pellet, which showed an even higher selectivity to light olefins (∼48%) resulting from the synergy effect of the fast diffusion rate and passivation of external acid density.

Abstract:Desulfurization of FCC gasoline by alkylation over a solid acid catalyst is considered to be a viable and less costly path to meet environmental regulations of sulfur emissions. However, side reactions in this process lead to significant levels of coke which greatly reduce the catalyst lifetime. In this paper, experiments were designed in both real and simulated gasoline to investigate the effect of different concentrations of methanol on the catalytic behavior of HY zeolite in the alkylation process for desulfurization. The result showed that the presence of an appropriate amount of methanol in FCC gasoline (about 5 wt % of the feed) appeared to improve the catalyst selectivity for the alkylation of thiophenic compounds by decreasing the conversion of olefins to oligomers, which was favorable for prolonging the catalyst lifetime. Moreover, a deep investigation was also carried out by a theoretical calculation method of DFT to explain the reason for the advantageous effect of methanol on the catalyst performance in the desulfurization process.
Insight into Reaction Path and Mechanism of Catalytic Cracking of N-Hexane in HZSM-5 Zeolites

Abstract:The n-hexane was used as a model compound to study the catalytic cracking behavior of light hydrocarbon in HZSM-5 zeolites, and the law of product selectivity of real acid-catalyzed reaction was investigated by analyzing the product distributions. The results showed that no pyrolysis reaction was found at 300°C. Only the acid catalytic reaction took place by the mechanism of carbocation, whose activity was positively correlated to the amount of Brønsted (B) acid sites. The selectivity of ethane, ethylene and propane was negatively correlated, while that of propylene was positively correlated with the Si/Al ratios and catalyst to oil ratios, suggesting that low acid density might be more favorable for monomolecular cracking reactions. It was worth nothing that the total selectivity of C4 products was much higher than that of C2 products. Combined with the quantum chemistry calculation results, it could be confirmed that the super-stability of C2H+ 5 carbenium ion from the monomolecular cracking of n-hexane made it difficult to produce ethylene and ethane through hydrogen transfer reaction. It’s easier to form a C8 carbenium ion (C8H+ 19) with another n-hexane molecule, and then to generate more C4 products. These results revealed the nature of the low selectivity of ethylene in light hydrocarbon catalytic cracking products. It could be concluded that the product selectivity of catalytic cracking of light hydrocarbons could be modulated by controlling reaction paths depending on the catalyst acid properties and the catalyst to oil ratios. This work will provide important theoretical support for the catalyst design and process development of naphtha catalytic cracking.

Abstract:The process of ethanol conversion on H-ZSM-5 zeolite with different Si/Al ratios was well-studied with the assistance of in situ solid-state 13C NMR experiments under continuous flow (CF) and batch-like conditions, respectively. Except for the adsorbed ethanol and diethyl ether, the surface ethoxy species, triethyloxonium ion, and even cyclopentadienyl cations were captured on the working catalyst and identified as active intermediates in ethanol conversion. The evolution process of these captured intermediates was exhaustively illustrated subsequently. Especially, two kinds of configuration of the adsorbed ethanol, referred to as side-on and end-on orientations, and diethyl ether (DEE) with an activated state were also revealed in this work. In addition, involved as one of the important active intermediates in MTO reaction, the cyclopentadienyl cations were also speculated to play important roles in the ethanol conversion and have close relation to propene formation.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Analysis of n-hexane, 1-hexene, cyclohexane and cyclohexene catalytic cracking over HZSM-5 zeolites: Effects of molecular structure

Abstract:In order to reveal the effects of the molecular structure, the catalytic cracking of n-hexane, 1-hexene, cyclohexane and cyclohexene over HZSM-5 zeolites was carried out at 260-550 °C under atmosphere. A particular attention was paid to the variation trends of the conversion and product distribution with the reaction temperature and time on stream (TOS). The fresh and spent HZSM-5 zeolites were studied by XRD, SEM, Py-IR, TPO, NH3-TPD and N2 physisorption. It was found that the catalytic activity was in a descending order of 1-hexene > cyclohexene > n-hexane > cyclohexane, and the catalytic stability was in a descending order of 1-hexene > n-hexane > cyclohexene > cyclohexane. n-Hexane benefited alkane formation, 1-hexene benefited alkene formation, while cyclohexane and cyclohexene benefited aromatic formation. Coke formation blocked the porous channel and reduced the acid sites of HZSM-5 zeolites, and C6 catalytic cracking exhibited the distinct response to the increase of coke and TOS. Compared with n-hexane, the increase of coke formation significantly inhibited cyclohexane catalytic cracking. Although 1-hexene catalytic cracking achieved the similar amount of coke to cyclohexane, the conversion of 1-hexene remained unchanged with the increase of TOS, which was attributed to the high activity of the C=C bond. Analogously, cyclohexene with the high activity exhibited the stable conversion with the increase of TOS. Interestingly, the coke was almost generated at the beginning in cyclohexene catalytic cracking at 550 °C and all the selectivity except benzene got close to none after 3 h on stream. Considering the stable conversion and fluctuant product distribution with the increase of TOS, it was deduced that alkene was crucial to coke formation in cyclohexene catalytic cracking. According to the literatures, the typical reaction pathways were summarized and the mechanism indexes were defined to reveal the role of the molecular structure in C6 catalytic cracking. It was found that the C=C bond and cyclic structure inhibited the protolytic cracking, hydride transfer and isomerization, while enhanced the oligomerization and aromatization compared to the C-C bond and linear structure, respectively.

Abstract:Ethanol-to-hydrocarbons (ETH) process, is investigated in this work due to the requirement of sustainable production route for light olefins such as ethene and propene. Majority of the mechanism insights of ETH process are principally proposed based on the methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH) process, which involves a homologous reaction system. The reaction intermediate species including cyclopentenyl cations and aromatics species, which are denoted as “hydrocarbon pool (HCP)” species in MTH process, were discovered and identified in the ETH process by in situ solid-state 13C NMR (ssNMR) experiments, advanced 2D 13C–13C INADEQUATE (Incredible Natural Abundance DoublE QUAntum Transfer Experiment) ssNMR experiment, 12C/13C-C2H5OH isotope switching experiments complemented by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC–MS). Especially, in the ETH reaction, ethylcyclopentenyl cations and their deprotonated form were first captured and exhibited relatively higher activity in the formation of ethene and propene. Multi-routes with the participation of these active intermediates were proposed and evaluated by density functional theory calculation (DFT), demonstrating that they can play important roles in the formation of olefins. Ethene formation are mainly formed from ethanol dehydration, whereas propene can be produced via multi-routes with the participation of the captured HCP species. Moreover, the detailed reaction routes may be modulated by the temperature. This work provides direct evidences of the critical function of HCP species in the ETH process and reveals the mechanism of olefin formation.

Abstract:The understanding of catalyst deactivation represents one of the major challenges for the methanol-to-hydrocarbon (MTH) reaction over acidic zeolites. Here we report the critical role of intermolecular π-interactions in catalyst deactivation in the MTH reaction on zeolites H-SSZ-13 and H-ZSM-5. π-interaction-induced spatial proximities between cyclopentenyl cations and aromatics in the confined channels and/or cages of zeolites are revealed by two-dimensional solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The formation of naphtalene as a precursor to coke species is favored due to the reaction of aromatics with the nearby cyclopentenyl cations and correlates with both acid density and zeolite topology.

Abstract:Understanding coke formation routes over Ni-based catalysts is essential in determining the catalytic performance in ethanol steam reforming. In this study, we focused on optimizing the active sites distribution via the metal-support interactions and understanding the coke precursor gasification in Ni/CexZr1-xO2–Al2O3 (CZA) catalysts for ethanol steam reforming. We found that the optimized active sites distribution could minimize coke formation by enabling efficient gasification of a coke precursor on Ni. In the 20Ni/40CZA catalyst, the crystalline CZ exhibited a strong interaction with Ni, maintaining a uniform distribution of highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles and creating abundant oxygen vacancies on CZ, even at 20 wt% of Ni loading. Consequently, the resistance to coking over 20Ni/40CZA was significantly enhanced due to the efficient delivery of active oxygen atoms from steam on the abundant oxygen vacancies to the coke precursor on the Ni surface, resulting in fast gasification of the coke precursor.

Abstract:The textural properties of zeolite catalysts have great influence on the aromatics production during co-cracking of phenolic bio-oil and hydrogen donors, such as ethanol. Through a generalized hydrothermal treatment mediated by ammonia, a series of micron or nano-ZSM-5 with different mesostructure distributions could be easily obtained. The major products of co-cracking with ethanol were analyzed in detail along with structural parameters and acidity properties of the corresponding catalysts. Nanoparticle sizes can effectively increase the cracking performance, especially promoting methoxyl removal. By introducing mesopores into ZSM-5, the co-cracking performance was altered significantly and no longer had good correlation with the concentration of acid sites. The topological shape and position of mesopores had a bigger effect, and the ordered mesopores on the outer surface along with internal mesopores with wide openings were more favorable than hollow mesopores inside with narrow openings. This tendency towards mesopore morphology can be quantified by several structural parameters. Between three kinds of mesostructure distribution, the core-shell ZSM-5 showed optimal performance with the highest BTEX yield and deoxygenation efficiency, due to its improved diffusion of reactants and intermediates. This result can provide reference for the forthcoming design of microporous-mesoporous composite zeolites with more highly ordered mesoporosity for the severe coke deposition reaction.

Abstract:Background With the improvements in the bio‐ethanol production, the process of converting ethanol to 1, 3‐butadiene (ETB) has received substantial scholarly attention, whose industrialization has been constrained by the stability of the catalysts. Results In this work, the deactivation behavior of Zr‐β zeolite in the process of ethanol (EtOH)/acetaldehyde (AcH) to 1,3‐butadiene (BD) was investigated. In addition, the deactivation kinetics of ETB was studied under an isothermal differential microreactor. The kinetic model was developed and parametrized with the Langmuir‐Hinshelwood (L‐H) mechanism, and the intrinsic kinetic equation was derived. The deactivation kinetic model of the ETB reaction was established from the active site content of the catalyst as a function of time on stream. The validity of the kinetic model was tested, and the results were found to be accurate. Conclusions The deactivation was mainly caused by coke, which are mainly long‐chain unsaturated oxygenated organic compounds and aromatic compounds, covering Lewis acid sites in the microporous channel of catalyst, nevertheless the zeotype topology and morphology were not destroyed. The kinetic data suggested that the reaction was of the first order and the activation energy of the deactivation process was 75.59 kJ/mol. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:This work studies the reaction mechanism and the role of CO 2 in ethane dehydrogenation to ethene over two types of Pt-Zn/ZSM-5 catalysts. The calculation results demonstrate that the Pt-Zn sites have different roles, and Zn 6 Pt 1 /ZSM-5 is more active than Pt 3 Zn 1 /ZSM-5 due to more efficient Pt-Zn sites for dehydrogenation with the assistance of framework O of ZSM-5. CO 2 reacts with H- species generated from ethane dehydrogenation and creates new and facile H-consuming routes, thus promoting the reaction. The positive effect of CO 2 is more significant over Zn 6 Pt 1 /ZSM-5 than Pt 3 Zn 1 /ZSM-5 owing to the largely reduced barrier of rate-limiting step. Zn 6 Pt 1 /ZSM-5 greatly suppresses the competitive side reaction of CO 2 with ethyl species, thus becoming a promising catalyst for ethene generation. This work deepens the mechanistic understanding of CO 2 -assisted dehydrogenation of light alkanes over Pt-Zn/ZSM-5 catalysts and unravels the important role of CO 2 , providing a useful reference for future catalyst design.

Abstract:Ethane conversion to ethylene and aromatics over Zn/zeolite catalysts is a promising technology for efficient exploitation of light alkanes. However, the reaction faces two major hurdles including the limited ethane conversion due to thermodynamics and the drastic catalyst deactivation by kinetical coke accumulation. Here we present a route to improve ethane conversion using a composite catalyst, involving Zn/HZSM-5 for ethane dehydroaromatization and CaMnO3-δ perovskite for in situ selective hydrogen oxidation. The in situ H2 consumption shifts ethane dehydrogenation equilibrium to the desired side and can obviously increase the yield of target product. Furthermore, it is found that the in situ generated H2O through H2 combustion can significantly suppress the coke formation and consequently enhance the stability of the composite catalyst. After 400 min reaction, a product yield of 23% was retained over the composite catalyst, almost a threefold increase with respect to the Zn/HZSM-5 reference (8%). It is anticipated that this novel composite catalyst combined with an efficient reactor technology may improve the viability of ethane aromatization in utilization.

Abstract:Bio-oil is a mixture of organics and its steam reforming for production of hydrogen has attracted extensive attention. During steam reforming, the reaction intermediates derived from the varied organics in bio-oil might interact with each other, impacting composition/properties of the products. In this study, steam reforming of single or mixture of acetic acid and ethanol, the representatives of carboxylic acid and alcohol, were conducted with Ni/KIT-6 as the catalyst, aiming to probe the potential interaction of the reaction intermediates on the reforming reaction. The results showed that the interactions of the derivatives from acetic acid and ethanol did exist, enhancing conversion of reactants, formation of gaseous by-products and affecting coke properties. The co-reforming of ethanol and acetic acid generates more reaction intermediates bearing hydroxyl group that are difficult to be gasified and also forms more coke, leading to more significant catalyst deactivation. The coke formed from the co-reforming is not only prone to oxidation, but also showed distinct morphologies. Carbon nanotubes with coarse surface and hillocks was the main form of coke from steam reforming of ethanol or acetic acid, while coke from the co-reforming was mainly in the form of carbon nanofiber decorated with the hangnail-like substance or rope-like structures with no cavity and micrometers of length.

Abstract:Ethylene, a key chemical in the synthesis of plastics, fibres, rubbers, solvents and many other necessary chemicals , is produced from petroleum- and coal-based industrial chemical processes. Commercial bioethanol is a renewable low-cost feedstock that can be readily converted into ethylene by dehydration process using solid acids, such as Brønsted acidic H-ZSM-5 zeolites, and thus it is an ideal candidate to replace petroleum and coal for the sustainable production of ethylene. In this work, strong Lewis acidic extra-framework tri-coordinated Al 3+ species were introduced into H-ZSM-5 zeolites to improve their catalytic activity. Remarkably, Al 3+ species working with Brønsted acid sites can accelerate ethanol dehydration at the much lower reaction temperature and short unsteady-state period within 1~2 h, compared to > 9 h for those without Al 3+ species, which can significantly enhance the ethanol dehydration efficiency and reduce the cost. Reaction mechanism studied by solid-state NMR shows that strong Lewis acidic EFAl-Al 3+ species can collaborate with Brønsted acid sites and promote ethanol dehydration either directly or indirectly via an aromatics-based cycle to produce ethylene dehydration.

Alkylation of Coking Benzene with Ethanol to Ethylbenzene over Modified HZSM-5

Abstract:Alkylation of coking benzene with ethanol and desulfurization was investigated over HZSM-5 catalyst modified by boron via ion exchange. Characterization of the modified catalyst by XRD and BET indicated that pore diameter,BET surface area and micropore volume of the catalyst declined after modification. Selectivity to ethylbenzene declined slightly while benzene conversion increased. The optimum condition was as Mows: (350-400)? ,n( benzene) :n(ethanol) =(3:1) ~(5:l), WHSV (4-6) h-1.

Abstract:Technological enablers that use CO 2 as a feedstock to create value-added chemicals, including ethanol, have gained widespread appeal. They offer a potential solution to climate change and promote the development of a circular economy. However, the conversion of CO 2 to ethanol poses significant challenges, not only because CO 2 is a thermodynamically stable and chemically inert molecule but also because of the complexity of the reaction routes and uncontrollability of C–C coupling. In this study, we developed an efficient catalyst, K–Fe–Cu–Zn/ZrO 2 (KFeCuZn/ZrO 2 ), which enhances the EtOH space time yield (STY EtOH ) to 5.4 mmol·g cat –1 ·h –1 , under optimized conditions (360 °C, 4 MPa, and 12 L·g cat –1 ·h –1 ). Furthermore, we investigated the roles of each constituent element using in situ/operando spectroscopy such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). These results demonstrate that all components are necessary for efficient ethanol synthesis.
