Abstract:The activation of dinitrogen by titanium hydride complex with two bridging hydrides located between metal Ti and Li was investigated. Exposing cyclic bis-alkylidene titanium complex 1 to H2 in THF solution yielded titanium hydride 2, {[(2-butene)(C5H5)Ti](μ-H)2Li(THF)3}. 2 aggregated into dimer 3 in hexane, accompanied by the release of LiH. Treatment of 2 with N2 (1 atm) in THF resulted in ionic end-on bridged dinitrogen dititanium complex 4, {[((2-butene)(C5H5)Ti)2(μ2-ƞ1,ƞ1-N2)][Li(THF)4]}, without using external reducing agents. Furthermore, 4 could be oxidized to yield the binuclear complex 5, {[(2-butene)(C5H5)Ti]2(μ2-ƞ1,ƞ1-N2)}. The solid-state structures of 4 and 5, as revealed by X-ray crystallographic studies, exhibit relatively short N-N bond distances of 1.198(2) Å and 1.179(2) Å, respectively. These results align with the observed N-N Raman stretching frequencies at 1699 cm−1 and 1704 cm−1. The N2 moiety bridging two titanium atoms could be converted into ammonia and hydrazine upon treatment with a proton source and reductant.

Abstract:Nitrogen fixation and hydrogenation are important issues in chemistry and industry. Herein, we used mass spectrometry and quantum chemical calculations to identify the quaternary AuNbBO- anions that can efficiently activate N2 and H2 to form imido (or amido) units in the products AuNbBON2H2- under thermal collision conditions. In these reactions, Nb and B atoms work in synergy to dissociate N2 and the Au atom acts as a reducing agent, which facilitates the removal of one activated N atom for the following hydrogenation process; generation of three-centered, two-electron bonds facilitates N2 activation and N transformation. This study shows that the noble metal-assisted early transition metal boronyl cluster is highly reactive to facilitate thermal N-N and H-H bond cleavage, and NH (or NH2) and NBO units, which are important intermediates in N2 hydrogenation reactions, are formed. These findings may provide insight into the design of new catalysts for the synthesis of NH3 from N2 and H2.

Abstract:Liquid-phase methane activation by ruthenium complexes has been studied using a combination of experiments and quantum-chemical calculation. Surprisingly, methane can be converted to methyl trifluoroacetate efficiently under mild conditions, and the bis(NHC) ligand outperforms the other two employed. The associated electronic origins of the excellent performance of the ruthenium complex - in particular the ligand effects - have been discussed, and the dative C & RARR; Ru interaction as well as the structural distortion of the bis(NHC) plane are found responsible. This work reveals the promising role ruthenium may play in the construction of organometallic catalysts for efficient methane conversion.

Abstract:The gas-phase reactions of [TiAlO4](+) with methane have been explored by using FTICR mass spectrometry complemented by quantum chemical calculations. Interestingly, the [TiAlO4](+) ions can activate two methane molecules continuously. Moreover, in contrast to the previous reports on gas-phase methane activation by metal oxide clusters, in which hydrogen-atom transfer and/or proton-coupled electron transfer prevail, a hydride transfer process dominates the [TiAlO4](+)/CH4 system. The associated electronic origins have been discussed, and such a terminal metal-oxo active center as addressed in the [TiAlO4](+) cluster has proven to be promising in the construction of efficient catalysts concerning methane conversion.

Abstract:The activation of dinitrogen (N2) and direct incorporation of its N atom into C-H bonds to create aliphatic C-N compounds remains unresolved. Incompatible conditions between dinitrogen reduction and C-H functionalization make this process extremely challenging. Herein, we report the first example of dinitrogen insertion into an aliphatic Csp3-H bond on the ligand scaffold of a 1,3-propane-bridged [N2N]2--type dititanium complex. Mechanistic investigations on the behaviors of dinuclear and mononuclear Ti complexes indicated the intramolecular synergistic effect of two Ti centers at a C-N bond-forming step. Computational studies revealed the critical isomerization between the inactive side-on N2 complex and the active nitridyl complex, which is responsible for the Csp3-H amination. This strategy maps an efficient route toward the future synthesis of aliphatic amines directly from N2.

Chirik and co-workers have studied the reaction of a hafnocene–dinitrogen complex with CO in the course of which the NN bond is completely broken. Abstract:Cleavage of the strong N≡N bond has long been a great challenge for energy-efficient dinitrogen (N2) fixation; thus a reasonable design of reactive species to activate N2 under mild conditions is highly desirable and meaningful. Herein a novel N2 activation strategy of combining 5d early (E) and 3d late (L) transition metals (TMs) is proposed, which is verified by the facile and complete N≡N cleavage via the polarized Fe-Ta bond in gas-phase cluster FeTaC2-. The efficient N≡N cleavage benefits from an electronic-level design of highly strengthened donor-acceptor interactions, in which the 5d-ETM (Ta) mainly pushes electrons from occupied 5d-orbitals to N2 π*-orbitals while the 3d-LTM (Fe) simultaneously pulls electrons from N2 σ/π-orbitals to its unoccupied 3d-orbitals. Through employing 5d-ETM and 3d-LTM to play their respective roles, this work provides a new and versatile idea for activating the inert N≡N bond and inspires relevant design of TM-based catalysts.

Abstract:The synthesis, characterization, and theoretical studies of titanium- μ -N 2 complexes with di-anionic guanidinate ligands were reported as the first example of its kind. Thus, with (Me 3 Si) 2 N-guanidinate ligands, the mono-anionic guanidinate-supported titanium- μ -N 2 complex 1 was obtained. Then, reduction of 1 with potassium afforded the di-anionic guanidinate-supported titanium- μ -N 2 complex 2 via cleavage of one N—Si bond of the (Me 3 Si) 2 N substituents in 1 , changing the guanidinate ligands automatically from mono-anionic to di-anionic and remarkably lengthening the bond length of the µ -N 2 . Characteristic studies and DFT calculations were performed to reveal that the di-anionic guanidinate ligands stabilized the geometry of 2 and increased the charge density on the bridging dinitrogen.

Abstract:Titania (TiO2) is widely used in the chemical industry as an efficacious catalyst support, benefiting from its unique strong metal-support interaction. Many proposals have been made to rationalize this effect at the macroscopic level, yet the underlying molecular mechanism is not understood due to the presence of multiple catalytic species on the TiO2 surface. This challenge can be addressed with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) featuring well-defined metal oxo/hydroxo clusters for supporting single-site catalysts. Herein we report that the Ti8(μ2-O)8(μ2-OH)4 node of the Ti-BDC MOF (MIL-125) provides a single-site model of the classical TiO2 support to enable CoII-hydride-catalyzed arene hydrogenation. The catalytic activity of the supported CoII-hydride is strongly dependent on the reduction of the Ti-oxo cluster, definitively proving the pivotal role of TiIII in the performance of the supported catalyst. This work thus provides a molecularly precise model of Ti-oxo clusters for understating the strong metal-support interaction of TiO2-supported heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:By reacting the semi-rigid PNP ligand with CoBr2, the corresponding complex PNPCoBr (1) was obtained. The reduction of 1 with excess amounts of KC8 in THF under the N2 atmosphere yielded a binuclear cobalt dinitrogen anion complex [Co(μ-Cy2P)PCyN2]2K (2) via the C-P bond cleavage of the PNP ligand. By adding 2,2,2-cryptand into complex 2, the ion pair Co complex, [Co(μ-Cy2P)PCyN2]2K(crypt-222) (3) could be effectively prepared. The structures of 1, 2, and 3 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. And the N2 is moderately activated in complexes 2 and 3. There is a Co-Co bond in 2 and 3 suggested by the DFT calculations. Compounds 1 and 2 display catalytic activity for the transformation of N2 to N(SiMe3)3

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Two electron reduction of [N2NBn]TiIVCl2 (3) gave a highly reactive [N2N]TiII species, which underwent C‐O bond activation of THF (tetrahydrofuran) to generate [N2NBn]TiIV[O(CH2)4] (4) through oxidative addition. The resulted TiIV‐Csp3 bond in oxametallacyclohexane was tantamount to the elaborately‐designed Ti‐alkyl complexes, competent to activate intramolecular Csp2‐H bond, forming ortho‐cyclometalated complex [N2NCH2C6H4]TiIV(OnBu) (5). Key intermediates were isolated and fully characterized by X‐ray crystallography. Mechanistic studies revealed that the oxidative addition of C‐O bond took place at TiII‐center via a radical intermediate, while a Csp2‐H bond activation proceeded by σ‐bond metathesis with a kitelike four‐centered TiIV‐transition state. Abstract:A series of trinuclear and dinuclear Cr(I)-N2 complexes bearing cyclopentadienyl-phosphine ligands were synthesized and characterized. Further reduction of the Cr(I)-N2 complexes generated anionic Cr(0)-N2 complexes, which could react with Me3SiCl to afford the first chromium hydrazido complex from N2 functionalization. These complexes were found to be effective catalysts for the transformation of N2 into N(SiMe3)3.

Abstract:Mechanistic insights into the selective C–H terminal activation of n-pentane with tungsten allyl nitrosyl complex reported by Legzdins were gained by employing density functional theory with B3LYP hybrid functional. Using Bader’s atom in molecules (AIM) analysis on the elementary steps of the hydrogen transfer process, TS1 and TS2, it was observed that the calculated H-transfer models were closely similar to Hall’s metal-assisted σ-bond metathesis through bond critical point (BCP) comparisons. One distinguishable feature was the fact that the formal oxidation state of the W changed in the concerted H-transfer process. To better differentiate, we term these processes as ‘Formal Reductive Hydrogen Transfer’ (FRHT) for TS1 and ‘Formal Oxidative Hydrogen Transfer’ (FOHT) for TS2.

Abstract:A series of titanium m2‐nitrido complexes supported by the triamidoamine ligand Xy‐N3N (Xy‐N3N = {(3,5‐Me2C6H3)NCH2CH2}3N3–) is reported. The titanium azido complex [(Xy‐N3N)TiN3] (1‐N3), prepared by salt metathesis of the chloride complex [(Xy‐N3N)TiCl] (1‐Cl) with NaN3, reacted with lithium metal or with alkali metal naphthalenides (alkali metal M = Na, K, and Rb) in THF to give the corresponding dinuclear m2‐nitrido complexes M[(Xy‐N3N)Ti=N‐Ti(Xy‐N3N)] (2‐M; M = Li, Na, K, Rb). Single crystal X‐ray diffraction studies of 2‐Li, 2‐Na, and 2‐K revealed alkali metal dependent structures in the solid state. While 2‐Li and 2‐K contain a m2‐nitrido ligand with a linear Ti–N–Ti core, 2‐Na includes a m3‐nitrido ligand as part of a T‐shape Ti2NaN fragment with the sodium cation weekly coordinated to the nitrido nitrogen atom. When the synthesis of the nitrido complexes was carried out in the presence of excess alkali metals, selective decomposition of the nitrido complexes was observed affording some intractable titanium species along with the trialkali metal salts [M3(Xy‐N3N)] (3‐M) (M = Li, Na, K, and Rb). These salts were also prepared by deprotonation of (Xy‐N3N)H3 with the corresponding alkali metal hexamethyldisilazide and characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy as well as single crystal X‐ray diffraction.

Abstract:Isolation of key intermediate complexes in dinitrogen functionalization is crucial for elucidating the mechanistic details and further investigation. Herein, the synthesis and characterization of (μ-η1:η1-N2)(η1-N2)-Cr(I) 3 and (η1-N2)2-Cr(0) complexes 4 supported by Cp* (Cp* = C5Me5) and NHC ligands were reported. Further functionalization of Cr(0)-N2 complex 4 with silyl halides delivered the key intermediates in the alternating pathway, the chromium diazenido complex 5 and the chromium side-on η2-hydrazido complex 6. Protonation of 6 led to the quantitative formation of N2H4. Moreover, the [η2-Me3SiNNSiMe3]2- unit in 6 enabled N-C bond formation reactions with CO2 and tBuNCO, giving the corresponding N,O-chelating hydrazidochromium complexes 7 and 8, respectively.
