Abstract:The mechanical cutting of the tunnel segmental lining to form a cross passage is typically performed in soft soil. This method can shorten the construction period and reduce environmental pollution compared with the freezing method and has broad application prospects in urban tunnel construction. However, this remains a challenge for engineers for the following reasons: (1) The cross-passage opening may significantly reduce the bearing capacity of the overall segmental lining. (2) Surrounded by soft ground, the constraints of the tunnel lining are weak. Hence, for the first time, in this study, full-scale tests of a cross passage (diameter, 3.5 m) on segmental tunnel rings (diameter, 6.6 m) were conducted to study the mechanical response of the main tunnel lining and its bearing capacity during the entire cutting process of the cross passage. In contrast to previous tests performed in the past where the segmental ring setup was in the horizontal plane, the segmental rings were in the vertical plane in this study, simulating the site conditions more realistically. Analysis of the results clarified the feasibility of the mechanical cutting method; however, localized reinforcement is necessary before the support is removed. The potential structural failure processes of deep-buried tunnels with lateral openings were proposed as modes of single-segment ring failure. Furthermore, after the cross passage was opened, two load paths were noted: within the ring load path and ring-to-ring load path. Based on the weak points of the structure under the ultimate limit state observed in the experiment, special design strategies were suggested for the cross passages construction of Suzhou, which were safely constructed using mechanical open methods. It is also beneficial for professionals worldwide such that they can optimize the structural design and structural reinforcement strategies when dealing with similar projects in the future.
