Abstract:This review focuses on a literature survey of the hydroarylation of alkynes via aryl C-H bond cleavage to prepare aryl-alkenes in the past thirty years. These efficient methods catalyzed by various metal complexes or protic acids are discussed respectively. Several reaction paths involved in these hydroarylations of alkynes are emphasized, which are aryl C-H activation by transition metals, formation of metal vinylidenes and Friedel-Crafts type process. In addition, some applications of these methods in organic synthesis are also introduced.

Abstract:A couple of pyrrolyl-based phosphoramidites featuring a binaphthyl backbone have been used as bidentate ligands in Rh-catalyzed hydroformylation of alkynes, to afford a range of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes in generally good yields (up to 94% ) with excellent chemoand stereoselectivities (E / Z up to > 99 / 1) under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:The hydroarylation reaction of terminal alkynes with arylboronic acids catalyzed by low (400 ppm) loadings of palladium has been developed. The reaction is broad in scope and high-yielding, even on multi-gram scale. It is suitable for the synthesis of alkenes labeled with deuterium, and for the late-stage modification of bioactive molecules.

Abstract:Efficient trans-hydroarylation of alkynes by simple arenes has been realized regio- and stereoselectively at room temperature in the presence of Pd(II) or Pt(II) catalysts and a mixed solvent containing trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). Various arenes undergo trans-hydroarylation selectively across terminal and internal C-C triple bonds-including those conjugated to CHO, COMe, CO2H, and CO2Et groups, affording kinetically controlled cis-arylalkenes predominantly in most cases, especially, in good yields for electron-rich arenes and activated alkynes. The formation of arene/alkyne 1/2 or 2/1 adducts as side products is dependent on the arenes' and alkynes' substituents, which can be suppressed in some cases by changing the catalyst, catalyst concentration, and reaction time. The Pt(II) system, PtCl2/2AgOAc/TFA, shows lower catalytic activity than Pd(OAc)(2)/TFA, but higher selectivity, giving higher yields of adducts at the same conversion. On the basis of several isotope experiments and control reactions, a possible mechanism involving electrophilic metalation of aromatic C-H bonds by in-situ-generated cationic Pd(II) and Pt(II) species leading to intermolecular trans-arylpalladation to alkynes has been discussed.

Abstract:A Transition-metal-catalyzed selective hydroarylation of alkynes represents a state-of-the-art approach in organic chemistry. Herein, we report the reaction of symmetrical 1,3-diynes and arylboronic acids, with Pd(OAc)2 as the catalyst and PCy3 as the ligand, affording functionalized enynes in good to excellent yields. Its efficiency is demonstrated by its good functional groups and broad substrate scope. This method offers a general, convenient, and practical strategy for the modular synthesis of multisubstituted enynes. To comprehensively elucidate the mechanism of the Pd-based catalytic system in the hydroarylation of 1,3-diynes, we performed detailed DFT computations for the Pd-catalyzed hydroarylation reaction.

Abstract:We developed a B(C6F5)3 catalyzed hydroarylation of terminal alkynes with various phenols at room temperature without adding any additives, leading to efficient synthesis of 2-gem-vinylphenols in good selectivity. Those transformations featured a broad substrate scope with moderate to excellent yields. Mechanism studies indicated that those transformations proceeded through the activation of phenol by B(C6F5)3 with subsequent protonation/Friedel-Crafts-type reaction.

Abstract:A palladium(II)-catalyzed regioselective syn-hydroarylation reaction of homopropargyl amines has been developed, wherein-selectivity is controlled by a cleavable bidentate directing group: Under the optimized reaction conditions, both dialkyl and alkylaryl substrates were found to undergo hydroarylation with high selectivity. The products of this reaction contain a 4,4-disubstituted homoallylic amine motif that is commonly seen in drug molecules and other bioactive compounds.

Abstract:The synthesis of (deuterated) 1,1-disubstituted alkenes via Pd-catalyzed decarboxylative hydroarylation of alkynyl carboxylic acids with arylboronic acids has been developed. The reaction features excellent regioselectivity, a broad substrate scope and gram-scale synthetic ability and offers a general synthetic method to synthesize 1,1-dideuterio olefins. Preliminary mechanism investigations indicate that 1,1-disubstituted alkenes are formed by hydroarylation of terminal alkynes generated by in situ decarboxylation of alkynyl carboxylic acids.

Abstract:A readily prepared chiral pyrrolylphosphinite has been found highly efficient for Rh(I) catalyzed asymmetric hydrofonnvlation of 1,1-disubstituted olefins. Chiral linear aldehydes have been synthesized with high productivity (turnover number (TON) up to 8900), excellent regioselectivity, and good to high chemo- and enantio-selectivites (71%similar to 86% ee). The reaction features ready catalyst preparation and wide functional group tolerance, thus will be of practical value in the use of asymmetric hydroformylation (AHF) for the synthesis of chiral alpha-alkyl-beta-formylpropanoate analogues.

Abstract:Herein, we wish to report the main-group metal Lewis acid catalyzed intramolecular hydroarylation of arenes with alkynes. This cyclization proceeds efficiently in the presence of a catalytic amount of AlCl3, affording phenanthrenes in moderate to excellent yields. The catalyst is cheap and nontoxic. The functional-group tolerance is high. A plausible electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction mechanism is proposed for this transformation.

Abstract:A simple, practical and governable palladium-catalyzed hydroformylation of terminal arylacetylenes has been disclosed. Abstract:A new strategy for the synthesis of 1,1-diaryl and triarylsubstituted alkenes has been developed utilizing B(C6F5)(3)-catalyzed hydroarylation of alkynes with phenols. The method provides a direct route to ortho-alkenylated phenols with both terminal and internal alkynes. The reactions show excellent regioselectivity, and good stereoselectivity was observed for the hydroarylation of internal alkynes. Computational and experimental studies suggest that for the reaction of internal alkynes and phenols, an acid-catalyzed isomerization mechanism involving two tertiary carbonium ion intermediates is responsible for the formation of Z-triaryl substituted alkenes.
