Is there convergence in carbon inequality? Evidence from China

Abstract:This study investigates the convergence of carbon inequality across 30 province-level administrative regions in China from 2012 to 2018. We conduct the σ and β convergence tests to show that carbon inequality across provinces converge through time. Our results also show that economic development and industrialization level are the promoting factors of the inter-provincial convergence in carbon inequality. Conversely, technological progress, the development of the secondary industry, and the consumption of rural residents are the inhibitive factors of the inter-provincial convergence in carbon inequality. Further evidence is provided for the regional heterogeneity of these factors in affecting the convergence pattern. Specifically, we find that the convergence in the eastern region is mainly affected by economic development and technological progress, while the central and western regions are mainly affected by the industrialization level, the development of the secondary industry, and the consumption of rural residents.
