Abstract:Objective: To assess the impact of psychotherapy on obesity treatment in outpatient settings. Methods: The study targets adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, comparing psychotherapeutic interventions to usual care or no treatment. Key outcomes include weight loss, adverse events, depression, quality of life, and long-term BMI changes. Extensive database searches were conducted. Results: Out of 1,334 articles reviewed, only 3 studies met the inclusion criteria, emphasizing the scarcity of relevant research. These studies primarily focused on behavioral and cognitive-behavioral strategies. Results showed that combining behavior therapy with diet/exercise led to greater weight loss than diet/exercise alone. Studies on cognitive therapy and general psychotherapy were less frequent and yielded weaker evidence. Despite varied methodologies, the findings suggest that behavioral therapy combined with dietary and exercise interventions offers improved outcomes, though more research is needed to strengthen these conclusions. Conclusions: The study found that combining behavioral therapy with diet and exercise resulted in greater weight loss than diet and exercise alone. However, research on the impact of psychotherapy on obesity is limited, as only 3 studies met the inclusion criteria. Cognitive therapies and general psychotherapy provided weaker evidence. Therefore, further research is necessary to validate these findings and investigate alternative psychotherapeutic methods for treating obesity.

Acupuncture is gaining popularity as an alternative treatment to manage weight. This research aims to update and synthesize the evidence of acupuncture therapies from systematic reviews for treating overweight and obesity. Methods: Nine databases were searched from their inception to March 2022. Overweight or obesity was classified using standard diagnostic criteria. Published systematic reviews that included randomized controlled trials and quasi-randomized studies were eligible. Quality was assessed via the AMSTAR-2 scale and risk of bias using the ROBIS tool. Results: Thirty-eight systematic reviews were identified. Acupuncture therapies and auricular acupoint stimulation showed benefits in terms of reducing body weight and body mass index. Catgut embedding therapy and abdominal acupuncture are currently not in widespread use with insufficient evidence. Acupuncture therapies appear to be safe. Most of the reviews were assessed as having high risk of bias and low confidence in the findings. Conclusion: There is a need for larger and more methodologically sound randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture therapies for individuals who are affected by overweight or obesity. Abstract:In the last decades, obesity has become a major concern for clinical and public health. Despite the variety of available treatments, the outcomes remain-by and large-still unsatisfactory, owing to high rates of nonresponse and relapse. Interestingly, obesity is being associated with a growing surge of neuropsychiatric problems, certainly related to the pathogenesis of this condition, and likely to be of great consequence as for its treatment and prognosis. In a neurobiologic direction, a sturdy body of evidence has recently shown that the immune-metabolic-endocrine dyscrasias, notoriously attached to excess body weight/adiposity, affect and impair the morpho-functional integrity of the brain, thus possibly contributing to neuroprogressive/degenerative processes and behavioral deviances. Likewise, in a neuropsychiatric perspective, obesity displays complex associations with mood disorders and affective temperamental dimensions (namely cyclothymia), eating disorders characterized by overeating/binge-eating behaviors, ADHD-related executive dysfunctions, emotional dysregulation and motivational-addictive disturbances. With this review, we attempt to provide the clinician a synoptic, yet exhaustive, tool for a more conscious approach to that subset of this condition, which could be reasonably termed "psychiatric" obesity.
Supportive Interventions in Managing Eating Disorders: A Review of the Evolving Medical Professional Landscape

Abstract:Background: The landscape of healthcare for medical professionals is undergoing significant changes during a global rise in obesity and mental health issues, particularly in the context of eating disorders. The COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with sedentary lifestyles and job loss, has exacerbated food obsession and mental health challenges, highlighting the need for effective treatments. Objective: This review aims to explore the impact of supportive interventions in managing eating disorders within the evolving landscape of medical professionals' approaches, focusing on the adoption of new tools and approaches. Methods: A comprehensive analysis of current literature and data sources was conducted to examine the healthcare landscape's transformation and its implications for treating eating disorders. Various treatment modalities, including therapy, education, medication, and support groups, were evaluated in light of recent changes in medical practice. Results: The review identified a growing body of research highlighting the effectiveness of supportive interventions, such as cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness, and participation in peer support groups in improving emotional eating patterns and facilitating long-term weight management. The findings underscore the growing prevalence of obesity and mental health issues, with a significant portion of individuals experiencing food obsession and overeating. Despite this, recognition and treatment of obesity-related psychological issues remain inadequate, partly due to a shortage of mental health professionals. Treatment options for eating disorders may include bariatric surgery, therapy, education, medication, and supportive interventions. Support groups such as Overeaters Anonymous (OA) have shown promise in helping individuals manage eating disorders and achieve healthier lifestyles. Conclusions: The shifting healthcare landscape necessitates a proactive approach from medical professionals to address the complex relationship between obesity, mental health, and eating disorders. Integrating peer support groups and holistic treatment approaches alongside traditional medical interventions can enhance outcomes and promote long-term weight management.

Abstract:The article studied the personal psychological traits of overweight people. Modern society perceives body corpulence as something negative and something to be ashamed of. However, obesity and related eating disorders have continued to grow steadily over the past few decades. The purpose of the article is to compare the personality traits of people with normal weight and overweight people in order to identify the psychological characteristics of people with excess weight. The conducted empirical research and analysis showed: 1) overweight respondents mostly haв a negative image of their own body; 2) overweight respondents had a worse control over their activities, were not always able to use the current situation to their own advantage, to achieve goals that might be blurred and not clear for such respondents. Also, overweight respondents had low self-acceptance. Therefore, in general, the psychological well-being of overweight people was reduced. We did not find differences on the scale of autonomy, and we cannot claim that overweight people excessively relied on other people's opinions, wishes or views; 3) overweight people tended to have depressive states. We believe that this happens, first of all, due to the pressure of society, due to the ideal of a slender, even sometimes too thin person existing in society; 4) overweight respondents were prone to pessimism, tended to distance themselves from their partner in romantic relationships. Overweight respondents were more likely to have a cold relationship with their parents. They also saw the relationship between their parents as strained, close to conflict. Based on the obtained data, we see a promising study aimed at improving the identified characteristics, which can help such people reduce excess weight.

Abstract:To simply reduce obesity to the medical set of problems falls short due to the complexity of the disorder. The focus of the affected children and adolescents is less on acute and future somatic health impairments but on the psychosocial aspects of obesity. The high degree of stigmatization especially accounts for the psychosocial burdens of the persons concerned. Constraints in the quality of life and a higher prevalence of mental disorders are reported by overweight and obese children and adolescents. In the sense of a vicious psychosocial circle, these variables in turn influence our eating and exercise behavior and hence central influences of weight control actions. Therefore, complex multimodal programs, which take into account these relationships, have long since been established in therapy. Numerous studies have underscored the efficacy of such lifestyle interventions resulting in moderate weight loss effects. Parent involvement and including behavioral strategies is associated with better results. Future studies should focus more on various psychosocial outcomes and addressing the question of psychosocial predictors of short- and long-term treatment success.

Abstract:In the face of the increasingly serious background of overweight and obesity rates among adolescents in China, mindfulness, as an emerging therapeutic approach, has shown its unique effectiveness. This article reviewed the research progress of mindfulness in the intervention of adolescent obesity, summarized its effects on improving physiological and psychological indicators, and listed the different options for implementing mindfulness therapy. These studies supported the preliminary effectiveness of mindfulness in the intervention of adolescent obesity, providing a basis for mindfulness to become a new approach for obesity intervention in the future.

Abstract:Introduction: Due to similarities in their pathophysiology and common psychological background, depressive disorders and obesity often occur simultaneously. The treatment of obesity can reduce the symptoms of comorbid depression and, conversely, treating depression can improve weight reduction outcomes. Purpose of this study: This review aimed to analyze the available literature on the subject of various methods of treating obesity and comorbid depression and to demonstrate the mutual correlation between the therapy of depressive disorders and the therapy of obesity. Method: The Pubmed and Cochrane databases were searched for original articles on the subject of simultaneous depression and obesity that had been published between 2014 and 2024, using the key words "depression", "depressive symptoms", "obesity", and "behavioral therapy". Results and conclusions: The successful treatment of depression can help in treating obesity, especially in motivating patients to adjust their lifestyle by changing dietary habits and increasing their physical activity, which contribute to both changes in body mass index scores and reductions in depressive symptoms. Changes in self-perception, reduced daily stress, and dietary changes, as well as increased physical activity, contribute to both weight loss and the reduction of depressive symptoms. Depression and obesity should be treated as one two-dimensional disorder to achieve better long-term treatment results.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, obesity has been one of the major public health concerns in most countries. In the search for new molecules that could be used for the treatment of obesity, good perspectives have been opened up for polyphenols, a class of natural bioactive phytochemicals. Experimental and limited clinical trial evidence supports that some polyphenols such as quercetin, curcumin, and resveratrol have potential benefit functions on obesity treatment. This brief review focuses on the main functions of the above-named polyphenols on adipose tissue. These polyphenols may play beneficial effects on adipose tissue under obese condition by alleviating intracellular oxidative stress, reducing chronic low-grade inflammation, inhibiting adipogenesis and lipogenesis, and suppressing the differentiation of preadipocytes to mature adipocytes.

Abstract:The world health organization defines obesity as a body mass index BMI of no less than 30.Because of the small size of the oriental human body obesity is defined as BMI≥28 in China.There is a large amount of obesity patient in our country which is nearly 90 million in 2014.Many researches showed that obesity is associated closely with the incidence of tumors. Currently there are about 13 types of obesity-related tumors.Therefore ensuring that BMI is within the normal range is still a correct choice for avoiding the risk of cancer.At the same time obesity also affects the therapy response and long-term survival of cancer patients.Many studies have shown that obesity may have an effect during the whole process of tumor treatment.With the increasing incidence of obesity and tumor the treatment for obese cancer patients in clinical practice has become an issue which clinicians need to consider.For a long time obesity has been regarded as a stumbling block in cancer treatment.However in recent years some studies have identified the dual role of obesity in the efficacy of surgery chemotherapy targeting therapy and immunotherapy in other words obesity paradox overweight and mildly obese cancer patients have the better survival benefit and response to therapy while moderate to severe obesity and underweight are related to poor prognosis.Researchers now recognize that obesity may affect the cancer treatment in another way.Therefore the weight management treatment strategy and long-term survival prediction of obese tumor patients need to be explored and established through further pre-clinical research and clinical practice and a more detailed and in-depth understanding of the relationship between obesity and tumor will be warrant for prevention and treatment of cancer.This article reviews the effects and advanced progress of obesity on cancer treatment.
Psychophysiological Adaptations to Yoga Practice in Overweight and Obese Individuals: A Topical Review

Abstract:Physical activity has been documented as a foundational approach for weight management and obesity, improving several cardiometabolic and mental health indices. However, it is not clear whether yoga practice can induce beneficial improvements in anthropometric and body composition parameters, performance, metabolic health, and well-being among overweight/obese people. The aim of this topical review was to catalog training studies examining the psychophysiological responses to yoga interventions in order to detect which outcomes have been investigated, the research methods applied, and the conclusions. The inclusion/exclusion criteria were met by 22 published articles involving 1178 (56% female) overweight/obese participants. This brief review on yoga-induced adaptations demonstrates that this widely used meditative movement activity can meaningfully improve the vast majority of the selected markers. These beneficial alterations are focused mostly on various anthropometric and body composition variables, cardiovascular disease risk factors, physical fitness parameters, quality of life, and stress in previously inactive overweight/obese individuals. Instead, yoga-based physical exercise interventions investigating anxiety, depression, mood state, exercise enjoyment, affect valence, and adherence were limited. Further research should focus on the yoga intervention configuration and potential mechanisms behind favorable changes in various psychophysiological indices through large-scale, rigorously designed randomized controlled trials implementing long-term interventions in overweight/obese individuals.
Effectiveness and safety of different academic schools of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of obesity: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Obesity is a global epidemic. Since 1975, the global obesity rate has almost tripled. Although many systematic reviews and clinical trials have shown that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) can effectively treat obesity, the effectiveness and safety of different academic schools of TCM in treating obesity have not been systematically evaluated. Methods: The retrieval language of this study was Chinese and English. From the date of creation of the following data to June 2023, the data of Medline, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Science Network, China Biomedical Literature Database, Central Controlled Trial Registration Center, and China Science Journal Database were retrieved, respectively. This study included clinical randomized controlled trials related to the treatment of obesity by different academic schools of TCM. The main outcome measures were body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, waist hip ratio, body fat content, fasting blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, and blood lipid level. In addition, we manually searched other resources, including reference lists of identified publications, conference articles, and gray literature. Results: This study will provide a more diverse choice of treatment options. Conclusion: The purpose of this study is to summarize and evaluate the effectiveness and safety of different academic schools of TCM in improving and treating obese patients from clinical trials, so as to provide more options for obesity treatment.

Abstract:The prevalence of obesity and morbid obesity in Taiwan has risen sharply in recent decades, as in other parts of the world, necessitating urgent action to prevent and curb its detrimental effects. Asian populations are susceptible to the repercussions of obesity at a lower body weight. A higher BMI is associated with more frequent outpatient visits, in-hospital admissions, higher medical costs, and a lower quality of life. However, effective weight management approaches are unlikely to be maintained in the long term without assimilation into daily lifestyle practices. This qualitative study, based on semi-structured interviews with 14 doctors, dieticians, and nurses who work to control the weight of people with obesity, explored and identified multilevel barriers in the context of daily life to improve the efficacy and execution of weight management strategies. They considered diets, physical activity, and sleep as key weight management activities. The cultural and psychosocial aspects of daily life were observed to have an impact upon weight management, particularly family conflicts due to cultural dynamics and socially and culturally reinforced food practices. To improve population weight, less-recognised aspects need to be addressed alongside the inclusion of mental health specialists in weight management protocols and policy interventions to minimise obesogenic practices and create environments conducive to weight management.

Influence of Daily Self-weighing Supported by Online Supervision on Body Composition and Emotions in Overweight/ Obese Women with Anxiety and Depression

Abstract:Background Overweight/obese women are a growing population with high incidence of depression, anxiety and psychological abnormalities. Due to lack of effective responsive measures to emotions and behaviors, weight loss outcomes are often unsatisfactory in overweight/obese women with anxiety and depression. And less attention has been paid to weight loss outcomes and emotions in this group.Objective To explore the effect of daily self-weighing supported by online supervision on body composition and emotions in overweight/obese women with anxiety and depression.Methods A prospective, randomized, controlled study was conducted with 92 overweight/obese women with mild to moderate anxiety and depression voluntarily recruited from Beijing's Haidian District from October to December 2019. The subjects were randomized into an experimental group (n=46) and a control group (n=46) at a ratio of 1∶1, and treated with weight control interventions for three months: besides eating the appropriate food combinations with scientific and individualized guidance and excising rationally, the experimental group measured their body weight daily with online supervision from the special member of our research group and reported the data to the group, while the control group measured their body weight per month, which was collected by our research group through monthly telephone follow-up. Body composition measurement result, anxiety assessed using Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and depression assessed using Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) were compared at baseline and three months after the intervention.Results All the participants completed the questionnaire assessment and follow-up. After the intervention, the control group had higher average body weight, BMI, body fat percentage and body fat as well as larger average visceral fat area than the experimental group （P<0.05） . Reduced body weight, BMI, body fat percentage, body fat and visceral fat area were seen in the experimental group after intervention （P<0.05） . The SAS score and SDS score in the experimental group were also lowered after intervention （P<0.05） . The average post-intervention scores of SAS and SDS in the experimental group were lower than those in the control group （P<0.05） .Conclusion In overweight/obese women with anxiety and depression, daily self-weighing with online supervision contributes to weight and fat loss and the improvement of anxiety and depression symptoms, which is a simple, effective and safe intervention measure.

Abstract:Obesity, a growing global health crisis, is driven by a complex interplay of genetic, biological, environmental, behavioral, socio-cultural, and economic factors. This comprehensive review encapsulates the epidemiology, pathophysiological mechanism, and the myriad of health complications it triggers, such as cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), cancer, neurological disorders, respiratory ailments, digestive diseases, mobility impairments, and psychological stress. The etiology of obesity is multifaceted, involving genetic predispositions, environmental influences, behavioral tendencies, and socio-economic elements. The pathophysiological underpinnings of obesity encompass multifaceted aspects of energy metabolism, including the regulation of appetite, glucose, lipid, and amino acid metabolism. This review also addresses the seemingly contradictory roles of obesity in various diseases, offering insights into these phenomena. The management of obesity is multi-pronged, including lifestyle modifications, pharmacological interventions, and metabolic surgeries. Lifestyle changes are foundational, but advancements in molecular techniques, digital technology, wearable devices, and artificial intelligence are opening new avenues for personalized treatment and early intervention. Pharmacological treatment and metabolic surgery are effective but should be judiciously tailored to individual patient needs. This review underscores the importance of a multifaceted approach to obesity management, aiming to curb the escalating trend and enhance future interventions and treatments. The ultimate goal is to synthesize current evidence and innovative strategies to combat obesity effectively.

Abstract:Obesity has profound medical, psychological, and emotional consequences and is associated with sexual difficulties. Little is known regarding the interrelationship between obesity and sexual functioning from a psychological perspective, and less is known regarding treatment options. This review examines these issues and considers various treatments. Literature searches were conducted to locate original research, reviews, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses of obesity, overweight, sexual function, sexual dysfunction, psychological health, mental health, and weight loss. Research demonstrates an association between obesity, mental health, and sexual functioning, but has failed to identify casual pathways between these conditions. Clarifying such pathways is necessary to inform treatment guidelines for clinical practice.
Psychological interventions for weight reduction and sustained weight reduction in adults with overweight and obesity: a scoping review

Abstract:Introduction Overweight and obesity are growing public health problems worldwide. Both diet and physical activity have been the primary interventions for weight reduction over the past decade. With increasing rates of overweight and obesity, it is evident that a primary focus on diet and exercise has not resulted in sustained obesity reduction within the global population. There is now a case to explore other weight management strategies such as psychological therapies. However, there is a dearth of literature that has mapped the types of psychological interventions and the characteristics of these interventions as a means of achieving weight reduction. Objectives The key objectives focused on mapping the types and characteristics of psychological interventions versus usual care for weight reduction and sustained weight reduction in adults with overweight or obesity. The study followed the scoping review methodology by Arksey and O'Malley and was reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines. Eligibility criteria Intervention studies were included if participants were 18 years and over, classified as overweight or obese (body mass index ≥25 kg/m 2 ) and had received a psychological therapy intervention. Studies were excluded if they included a comparison with other active lifestyle interventions (unless classified as usual care), were not available in English, were not full-text articles or were non-peer-reviewed articles. Sources of evidence Six electronic databases were searched from inception to April 2023 to identify relevant articles. Charting methods The study employed a systematic charting method and narrative synthesis to organise and synthesise the data. Results A total of 31 studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. 13 unique psychological interventions for weight reduction in adults with overweight or obesity were identified, with cognitive–behavioural therapy and motivational interviewing being the most common. Eight types of usual care were identified, which largely included education and training on nutrition and physical activity. Gaps in the current research were also identified. Conclusion The findings highlighted several gaps within the existing literature, largely due to a lack of evidence relating to adults with low socioeconomic status, non-white participants, individuals under 40 years of age and the integration of digital health technologies.

Abstract:The American Journal of Chinese Medicine, Ahead of Print. Obesity is a common metabolic syndrome that causes a significant burden on individuals and society. Conventional therapies include lifestyle interventions, bariatric surgery, and pharmacological therapies, which are not effective and have a high risk of adverse events. Acupuncture is an effective alternative for obesity, it modulates the hypothalamus, sympathetic activity and parasympathetic activity, obesity-related hormones (leptin, ghrelin, insulin, and CCK), the brain-gut axis, inflammatory status, adipose tissue browning, muscle blood flow, hypoxia, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) to influence metabolism, eating behavior, motivation, cognition, and the reward system. However, hypothalamic regulation by acupuncture should be further demonstrated in human studies using novel techniques, such as functional MRI (fMRI), positron emission tomography (PET), electroencephalogram (EEG), and magnetoencephalography (MEG). Moreover, a longer follow-up phase of clinical trials is required to detect the long-term effects of acupuncture. Also, future studies should investigate the optimal acupuncture therapeutic option for obesity. This review aims to consolidate the recent improvements in the mechanism of acupuncture for obesity as well as discuss the future research prospects and potential of acupuncture for obesity.

Abstract:Background There was a high prevalence of overweight/obesity among patients with severe mental disorders (SMD). However, studies on the lifestyle-based interventions in patients with SMD are limited. Objective To examine the effects of an educational lifestyle intervention on body weight and psychological health among Chinese community-dwelling overweight/obese patients with SMD. Methods Community-dwelling overweight/obese patients with SMD was recruited from Shenzhen, China in October 2020. They were randomly allocated into intervention group (IG) and control group (CG). Participants in IG received a 12-month educational lifestyle intervention, while the CG was exposed to routine care. A generalized estimating equation model was used to assess the effect of the intervention over time. Results A total of 176 subjects (88 in IG and 88 in CG) aged 42.2 ± 10.9 years were included in this study. After adjusting for potential confounders, body weight ( p = 0.001), body mass index (BMI, p = 0.001), and waist circumference ( p = 0.027) in IG significantly decreased compared with CG after 12 months. Besides, IG had significantly higher life satisfaction than CG after intervention ( p = 0.026), whereas significant reductions in depressive symptoms were observed in IG from 26.1 % at baseline to 13.6 % after the intervention ( p = 0.027), and the between-group differences were marginally significant ( p = 0.086). Conclusion An educational lifestyle intervention can effectively reduce body weight parameters and improve psychological health in overweight/obese patients with SMD.

Abstract:With the development of society, people’s living standards continue to improve, and various unhealthy living habits often contribute to the growing obesity rates. An increasing number of individuals are focusing on their weight and seeking healthier methods of weight loss. Acupuncture, as a unique treatment within traditional Chinese medicine, has gradually gained attention due to its minimal side effects, safety, effectiveness, and overall regulation. However, clinical acupuncture treatments for weight loss often rely on empirical acupoint selection and lack a comprehensive and systematic diagnosis and treatment plan. Although many individuals seeking weight loss are aware of acupuncture, they often lack an understanding of its mechanisms. This article is based on the fundamental principles of traditional Chinese medicine, beginning with the etiology and pathogenesis, and delving into treatment methods, acupoint selection principles, and guidelines.
