Abstract:Developing an efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) working in both acidic and alkaline solutions is highly desirable, but still remains challenging. Here, Ptx Ni ultrathin nanowires (NWs) with tunable compositions (x = 1.42, 3.21, 5.67) are in situ grown on MXenes (Ti3 C2 nanosheets), serving as electrocatalysts toward HER. Such Ptx Ni@Ti3 C2 electrocatalysts exhibit excellent HER performance in both acidic and alkaline solutions, with the Pt3.21 Ni@Ti3 C2 being the best one. Specifically, Pt3.21 Ni@Ti3 C2 achieves record-breaking performance in terms of lowest overpotential (18.55 mV) and smallest Tafel slope (13.37 mV dec-1 ) for HER in acidic media to date. Theory calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses demonstrate that the coupling of MXenes with the NWs not only approaches the Gibbs free energy for hydrogen adsorption close to zero through the electron transfer between them in acidic media, but also provides additional active sites for water dissociation in alkaline solution, both of them being beneficial to the HER performance.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) shows potential to transition from fossil fuels to green renewable energy. Designed for high efficiency and stability electrocatalyst in pH-universal electrolyte is of great significance but challenging. Herein, a novel electrocatalyst of two-dimensional (2D) Mo2TiC2Tx MXene supported Pt/Ni(OH)2 (denoted as Pt/Ni(OH)2/Mo2TiC2Tx) is reported by hydrogen spillover effect for efficient HER in the full-pH range. The operando electrochemical characterization reveals that the hydrogen spillover phenomenon interactions between multi-functional catalytic sites, e.g. Pt, Ni(OH)2 and Mo2TiC2Tx, are used to enhance HER performance and expedite HER kinetics. Moreover, theoretical calculation via density functional theory demonstrates the Pt/Ni(OH)2/Mo2TiC2Tx possess free energy of absorbed hydrogen close to zero (approximate to- 0.09 eV), which leads to optimal activity. As expected, the electrocatalyst necessitates the overpotential of 25, 33 and 36 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in acidic, alkaline, and neutral conditions, respectively, which are outperforming Pt/C. This work furtherly demonstrates a new way to design a powerful electrocatalyst for pH-universal HER based hydrogen spillover phenomenon.

Abstract:The insufficient availability and activity of interfacial water remain a major challenge for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we propose an "on-site disruption and near-site compensation" strategy to reform the interfacial water hydrogen bonding network via deliberate cation penetration and catalyst support engineering. This concept is validated using tip-like bimetallic RuNi nanoalloys planted on super-hydrophilic and high-curvature carbon nanocages (RuNi/NC). Theoretical simulations suggest that tip-induced localized concentration of hydrated K+ facilitates optimization of interfacial water dynamics and intermediate adsorption. In situ synchrotron X-ray spectroscopy endorses an H* spillover-bridged Volmer‒Tafel mechanism synergistically relayed between Ru and Ni. Consequently, RuNi/NC exhibits low overpotential of 12 mV and high durability of 1600 h at 10 mA cm‒2 for alkaline HER, and demonstrates high performance in both water electrolysis and chlor-alkali electrolysis. This strategy offers a microscopic perspective on catalyst design for manipulation of the local interfacial water structure toward enhanced HER kinetics.

Abstract:Abstract Improving the catalytic efficiency of platinum for the hydrogen evolution reaction is valuable for water splitting technologies. Hydrogen spillover has emerged as a new strategy in designing binary-component Pt/support electrocatalysts. However, such binary catalysts often suffer from a long reaction pathway, undesirable interfacial barrier, and complicated synthetic processes. Here we report a single-phase complex oxide La 2 Sr 2 PtO 7+δ as a high-performance hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst in acidic media utilizing an atomic-scale hydrogen spillover effect between multifunctional catalytic sites. With insights from comprehensive experiments and theoretical calculations, the overall hydrogen evolution pathway proceeds along three steps: fast proton adsorption on O site, facile hydrogen migration from O site to Pt site via thermoneutral La-Pt bridge site serving as the mediator, and favorable H 2 desorption on Pt site. Benefiting from this catalytic process, the resulting La 2 Sr 2 PtO 7+δ exhibits a low overpotential of 13 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 22 mV dec −1 , an enhanced intrinsic activity, and a greater durability than commercial Pt black catalyst.

Abstract:Hydrogen spillover is a well-recognized phenomenon in the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and the spillover rate is highly dependent on metal–support interfaces. However, for the commonly used platinum (Pt) in HER, rational selection of the ideal support for intensifying spillover remains elusive. Herein, three-dimensional single-crystalline molybdenum oxide (s-MoO3) is proposed as an ideal support for active Pt sites. In contrast to these traditional support materials, the resultant s-MoO3 manifests an interconnected branch-like morphology, a zigzag-type stepped edge, a porous surface, and a partially reductive surface. By virtue of these morphological and structural advantages of s-MoO3 interconnected branches, the subsequent loading of Pt particles could induce the intensified spillover rate accompanied by the formation of the H(O) x MoO3 intermediate and thus the enhanced activity for HER. It is expected that this work will enrich the current knowledge on hydrogen spillover mechanisms and offer an effective intensification strategy for support-type catalysts.

Abstract:The construction of highly efficient and stable Pt-free catalysts for electrochemical hydrogen generation is highly desirable. Herein, we demonstrate the first metal-phosphides-metal system consisting of Ru, Ni2P, and Ni, which forms unique multiheterogeneous Ni@Ni2P-Ru nanorods. Interestingly, a Ru modulation effects that promotes the desorption of H-2 to achieve a moderate hydrogen adsorption energy (Delta G(H)), and enables the formation of Ni@Ni2P nanorods via Ru-Ni coordination to enhance the conductivity was discovered. Due to its optimal Delta G(H), improved conductivity and rodlike morphology, this catalyst shows superior electrocatalytic HER performances in both acidic and alkaline conditions, which are superior to those of some recently reported phosphides and close to that of commercial 20% Pt/C. Such a design strategy is not limited to Ni2P and Ru but also may be extended to other similar phosphides and noble metals, providing a new promising approach and an alternative to Pt catalysts for electrocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Catalytically active metals atomically dispersed on supports presents the ultimate atom utilization efficiency and cost‐effective pathway for electrocatalyst design. Optimizing the coordination nature of metal atoms represents the advanced strategy for enhancing the catalytic activity and the selectivity of single‐atom catalysts (SACs). Here, we designed a transition‐metal based sulfide‐Ni3S2 with abundant exposed Ni vacancies created by the interaction between chloride ions and the functional groups on the surface of Ni3S2 for the anchoring of atomically dispersed Pt (PtSA‐Ni3S2). The theoretical calculation reveals that unique Pt‐Ni3S2 support interaction increases the d orbital electron occupation at the Fermi level and leads to a shift‐down of the d ‐band center, which energetically enhances H2O adsorption and provides the optimum H binding sites. Introducing Pt into Ni position in Ni3S2 system can efficiently enhance electronic field distribution and construct a metallic‐state feature on the Pt sites by the orbital hybridization between S‐3p and Pt‐5d for improved reaction kinetics. Finally, the fabricated PtSA‐Ni3S2 SAC is supported by Ag nanowires network to construct a seamless conductive three‐dimensional (3D) nanostructure (PtSA‐Ni3S2@Ag NWs), and the developed catalyst shows an extremely great mass activity of 7.6 A mg−1 with 27‐time higher than the commercial Pt/C HER catalyst.

Abstract:Tuning the chemical and structural environment of Ru-based nanomaterials is a major challenge for achieving active and stable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysis. Here, we anchored ultrafine Ru nanoparticles (with a size of ~4.2 nm) on a hierarchical Ni2P array (Ru/Ni2P) to enable highly efficient HER. The Ni2P promoter weakened the adsorption of proton on Ru sites by accepting electrons from Ru nanoparticles. Moreover, the hierarchical Ni2P endowed Ru catalysts with a large surface area and stable open structure. Consequently, the as-fabricated Ru/Ni2P electrode displayed a low overpotential of 57 and 164 mV at the HER current densities of 10 and 50 mA cm−2, respectively, comparable to the state-of-the-art Pt catalysts. Moreover, the Ru/Ni2P electrode can operate stably for 96 h at 50 mA cm−2 without performance degradation. After pairing with a commercial RuO2 anode, the Ru/Ni2P anode catalyzed overall water splitting at 1.73 V with a current density of 10 mA cm−2, which was 0.16 V lower than its commercial Ni counterpart. In situ Raman studies further revealed the optimized proton adsorption at the Ru-active sites on Ni2P promoter, thus enhancing the electrocatalytic HER performance.

Abstract:The development of efficient and stable nanomaterial electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of great significance for renewable energy conversion via water electrolysis. Herein, we have developed a novel class of bimetallic RuM (M = Ni, Co) hollow nanorods (HNRs) through a facile Fe3+ etching strategy, as electrocatalysts for enhancing the HER. Morphological physical characterization and electrochemical tests demonstrated that RuM (M = Ni, Co) HNRs with hollow structures can effectively enhance electrocatalytic activity due to their high specific surface areas. Impressively, the RuNi HNRs exhibited superior HER performance with an overpotential of merely 25.6 mV in 1 M KOH solution at 10 mA cm−2, which is significantly lower than that of commercial Pt/C (44.7 mV). Moreover, the as prepared RuNi HNRs showed excellent stability and could continuously work at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 for 40 h with a negligible increase in potential. The Ru-based HNRs also showed high HER activity in an acidic solution. This study paves a new way for the universal fabrication of bimetallic hollow structured nanomaterials as efficient electrocatalysts for boosting the HER.

Abstract:Platinum-based catalysts play an important role in electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction, which is a renewable and clean way to produce H2. Herein, we have successfully synthesized the ultrafine PtNiP NWs with diameter less than 5 nm via a simple two-step hydrothermal reaction method. Impressively, the PtNiP NWs exhibit one of the best electrocatalytic activity toward HER under alkaline conditions, which can reach current density of 500 mA cm-2 only at the -0.153 V vs RHE with Tafel slop of only 30 mV dec-1. The DFT calculation results show synergistic effect of Pt, Ni and P atoms, where Ni atoms are conducive to the adsorption of H2O and P atoms are helpful for the dissociation of H2O, significantly improving kinetic processes of hydrogen evolution reaction. This work could be instructive and meaningful to design highly efficient and stable HER catalyst in alkaline condition for practical applications.

Abstract:Efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction are key issues for sustainable energy technologies such as solar fuel synthesis and fuel cells. Here we report that trimetallic PtNiCu nanochains can function as efficient hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. In acidic media, the nanostructure produces a current density of 200mAcm−2 at the overpotential of 0.075V, which is almost 5 times more electrocatalytically active than the state-of-the-art Pt catalysts on the basis of equivalent Pt mass and is the best among the reported Pt-based materials for HER. Electrochemical and structure characterization studies indicate that the composition-dependent high hydrogen evolution activity is resulted from both the synergistic capabilities of the metal atoms and the abundance of clean active facets on the edge sites. Our findings suggest that controlling the catalytic reaction via well-defined pathways on the multi-metallic alloys provides a great opportunity to improve their catalytic properties for hydrogen evolution reactions.

Abstract:Ruthenium phosphides are promising candidates to substitute platinum (Pt) for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) but further boosting their activity is a tremendous challenge. Herein, crystalline/amorphous core-shell nanoparticle supported on carbon nanotube () was synthesized by controllable surface phosphatization procedure. The resulted outperforms its Ru-based rivals and Pt/C catalyst in HER, exhibiting a tiny overpotential of 28 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and marvelous mass activity of 3.24 A mg −1 at 50 mV overpotential in alkaline solution. Further investigations show that electronic interaction between metallic Ru core and amorphous RuP shell tunes the absorption strength of hydrogen to boost the HER activity. This work exemplifies an effective strategy to enhance the electrocatalytic performance via interfacial electronic interaction and may shed light on crystalline/amorphous heterostructured catalysts.

Dual Roles of sub-nanometer NiO in Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction: Breaking Volmer Limitation and Optimizing d-Orbital Electronic Configuration

Abstract:Pt-based nanoclusters toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remain the most promising electrocatalysts. However, the sluggish alkaline Volmer-step kinetic and the high-cost hampered progress in developing high-performance HER catalysts. Herein, we propose to construct sub-nanometer NiO to tune the d-orbital electronic structure of nanocluster-level Pt for breaking Volmer-step limitation and reducing the Pt-loading. Theoretical simulations firstly suggest that electrons transfer from NiO to Pt nanoclusters could downshift the Ed-band of Pt and result in the well-optimized adsorption/desorption strength of hydrogen intermediate (H*), therefore accelerating the hydrogen generation rate. NiO and Pt nanoclusters confined into the inherent pores of N-doped carbon derived from ZIF-8 (Pt/NiO/NPC) was designed to realize the structure of computational prediction and boost the alkaline hydrogen evolution.The optimal 1.5%Pt/NiO/NPC exhibited an excellent HER performance and stability with a low Tafel slope (only 22.5 mv dec-1) and an overpotential of 25.2 mV at 10 mA cm−2. Importantly, the 1.5%Pt/NiO/NPC poseeses a mass activity of 17.37 A mg-1 at the overpotential of 20 mV, over 54 times higher than the benchmark 20 wt% Pt/C. Further, DFT calculations illustrate that Volmer-step could be accelerated owing to the high OH- attraction of NiO nanoclusters, leading to the Pt nanoclusters research a balance of H* adsorption and desorption (ΔGH*=-0.082 eV). Our findings provide new insights into breaking the water dissociation limit of Pt-based catalysts by coupling with metal oxide.
