Abstract:Background: Metastatic disease caused by prostate cancer (PCa) is the principal cause of PCa-related mortality. Long non-protein-coding RNAs may possess significant cellular functions. Plasmacytoma variant translocation 1 (PVT1), a long non-coding RNA encoded by the human PVT1 gene, is an oncogene, which can regulate several tumor-related genes. In PCa, the function and mechanism of PVT1 are unclear. NOP2 is being pursued as a prognostic marker for cancer aggressiveness, which promotes mouse fibroblast growth and tumor formation. Essentially, nothing is known about the specific interactions between the PVT1 and NOP2. Methods: 190 pairs of PCa tissues and adjacent normal tissues were collected and RNA sequencing was used to identify the differential lncRNAs. Real-time quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) confirmed these results and gene regulatory relationship. Lentiviral vectors were used to alter PVT1 and genes to analyze their effects on PCa progression. Transwell migration and invasion assays were performed to test the metastasis ability. Biofunction of PVT1 and NOP2 were confirmed in vitro and in vivo. Results: In this study, we reported that the long noncoding RNA-PVT1 was upregulated in PCa metastasis tissues and promoted migration of PCa cells in vitro and their metastasis in vivo. High levels of PVT1 significantly downregulated tumor suppressor microRNAs (miRNAs), such as miR-15b-5p, miR-27a-3p, miR-143-3p, and miR-627-5p, whose levels in metastasis tissues were low compared to those in non-metastasis tissues. In vitro and in vivo, PVT1 promotes PCa metastasis via targeting miRNAs. Furthermore, the expression level of PVT1 was positively associated with the expression of NOP2, a cancer metastasis-related protein. We demonstrated that NOP2 promoted invasion and migration of PCa. For specific mechanism, correlation analysis showed that PVT1 promoted metastasis by up-regulating NOP2. Conclusion: Taken together, our results show that PVT1 acts as an inducer of PCa metastasis via targeting miRNAs, thereby promoting NOP2. This axis may have diagnostic and therapeutic potential for advanced PCa.

Abstract:It has been brought to the attention of the PLOS ONE editors that there is substantial overlap in content between this article and another article published in PLOS ONE by different authors: "MicroRNA-302a Suppresses Tumor Cell Proliferation by Inhibiting AKT in Prostate Cancer" (DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0124410) [2]. There is a substantial overlap in the text, and multiple figures appear similar or identical despite labels and legends indicating that the data were obtained from different cell and tissue types (prostate cancer cell lines and tissues in the above-mentioned article versus colon cancer cell lines and tissues in the retracted article). Our follow-up in relation to how the overlap with the article by Zhang et al. (DOI: 10.1371/ journal.pone.0124410) [2] arose is ongoing. Upon our follow-up with the authors of the current article by Sun et al., we have been unable to obtain the underlying data and approval documents related to the study, and as a result, the PLOS ONE editors have been unable to verify the integrity of the work. In light of these concerns, the PLOS ONE editors retract this article.

Abstract:Subsequently to the publication of the above paper, the authors drew to the attention of the Editorial Office that they made a couple of errors in terms of the data assembly in Figs. 2 and 4 in their paper; specifically, the Transwell assay data shown for the 'miR-320a+/FoxM1+' panel in Fig. 5D on p. 1923 also appeared as the 'ACTN/NC' data panel in Fig. 4E on the same page (Fig. 4E contained the erroneously duplicated panel). In addition, data featured in Fig. 2D of the above paper were strikingly similar to data that appeared in Fig. 6e of the following paper, published subsequently to this article, written by different authors (although a Dr Shiyue Zhao worked in the molecular biology laboratory of Harbin Medical University from 2017 to 2018, and the research collaboration was conducted with Dr Chenlong Li's research group): Li C, Zheng H, Hou W, Bao H, Xiong J, Che W, Gu Y, Sun H and Liang P: Long non-coding RNA linc00645 promotes. TGF-β-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition by regulating miR-205-3p-ZEB1 axis in glioma. Cell Death Dis 10: 17, 2019. Finally, after having conducted an independent investigation of the data in this paper, the Editorial Office noted that one of the Petri dish images in Fig. 2C was also strikingly similar to data that appeared in Fig. 2H of the abovementioned article in the journal Cell Death & Disease . After having considered the authors' request for corrigendum, in view of the problems that were identified with the data, the Editor of Oncology Reports has decided that, owing to a lack of confidence in the presented data, the paper should instead be retracted from the journal. After having informed the authors of this decision, they accepted the decision to retract this paper. The Editor apologizes to the readership for any inconvenience caused.
