Abstract:Like the ability of electron regulation of electronic semiconductors, the photonic analogs usually considered as photonic structure materials are regarded as essential for light manipulation [1, 2]. With particular designs of photonic structures, they are expected to achieve different far-field and near-field optical features and thus lead to a perspective in all-optical circuit [3]. Though humankind has entered the nano-scale realm several decades ago, it is still a hard task for engineers to explore novel optical functional devices due to the limited experiences and originalities on artificial photonic structures design and the desired optical features. Additionally, it is also great challenges to fabricate photonic structures, owing to their sub-optical-wavelength to sub-micron featured sizes, especially in a high dimensional way by nano-fabrication technologies today.

Abstract:Abstract Nanophotonics has garnered intensive attention due to its unique capabilities in molding the flow of light in the subwavelength regime. Metasurfaces (MSs) and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) enable the realization of mass-producible, cost-effective, and efficient flat optical components for imaging, sensing, and communications. In order to enable nanophotonics with multipurpose functionalities, chalcogenide phase-change materials (PCMs) have been introduced as a promising platform for tunable and reconfigurable nanophotonic frameworks. Integration of non-volatile chalcogenide PCMs with unique properties such as drastic optical contrasts, fast switching speeds, and long-term stability grants substantial reconfiguration to the more conventional static nanophotonic platforms. In this review, we discuss state-of-the-art developments as well as emerging trends in tunable MSs and PICs using chalcogenide PCMs. We outline the unique material properties, structural transformation, and thermo-optic effects of well-established classes of chalcogenide PCMs. The emerging deep learning-based approaches for the optimization of reconfigurable MSs and the analysis of light-matter interactions are also discussed. The review is concluded by discussing existing challenges in the realization of adjustable nanophotonics and a perspective on the possible developments in this promising area.

Abstract:Tunable and multi-functional nanophotonic devices are used for applications from beam steering to sensing. Yet little is understood about fundamental limits to their functionality. The difficulty lies with the fact that it is a single structure that must exhibit optimal response over multiple scenarios. In this article, we present a general theoretical framework for understanding and computing fundamental limits to multi-functional nanophotonic response. Building from rapid recent advances in bounds to light–matter interactions, we show that after rewriting the design problems in terms of polarization fields, the introduction of suitable cross-correlation constraints imposes the crucial "single-structure" criteria. We demonstrate the utility of this approach for two applications: reflectivity contrast for optical sensing, and maximum efficiency for optical beam switching. Our approach generalizes to any active or multi-functional design in linear optics.

Abstract:A nanometer-scale all-optical tunable photonic metamaterial is realized by combining non-linearity enhancement associated with photonic band resonance and quantum confinement. A positive-to-negative switching of the effective dielectric constant is achieved. The operating pump power is reduced by three orders of magnitude, while an ultrafast response time on the order of picoseconds and large tunability are maintained.

Abstract:As the link capacity increases dramatically, it is also becoming more and more important to develop smart photonic networks-on-chip so that the bandwidth/channels can be utilized optimally and flexibly. One of the keys for realizing smart (reconfigurable) photonic networks is reconfigurable photonic integrated devices and circuits. As silicon has a large thermo-optic (TO) coefficient as well as a high heat conductivity, it is promising to realize efficient thermallyreconfigurable silicon photonic integrated devices and circuits with simple fabrication processes. This paper gives a review of our recent work on reconfigurable photonic integrated devices and circuits on silicon, including: (1) tunable microring-resonator (MRR)-based optical filters; (2) ultra-broadband optical switches; (3) monolithically-integrated reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs) for wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM), mode-divisionmultiplexing (MDM), as well as hybrid WDM-MDM systems.

Abstract:With the capabilities to localize light at the subwavelength scale and flexibly control the full dimensions of electromagnetic fields, planar optical artificial nanostructures have been widely explored to innovate next-generation multifunctional compact photonic devices in recent decades. To further improve the efficiency, quality (Q) factors, and design degrees of freedom of photonic devices, recent research advances have brought in comprehensive consideration of both local and nonlocal modes in nanostructures with blurred distinctions between metasurfaces and photonic crystals. In this Perspective, we review the recent progress in planar nanophotonics involving localized resonances, nonlocal modes, and their couplings. Many intriguing physical effects correlated to local and/or nonlocal modes and the corresponding applications are reviewed, as well as large-area optimization strategies to directly simulate local and nonlocal optical responses. We also summarize several current challenges and foresee various future directions of the attractive field.
