Abstract:Nonlinear metasurfaces with subwavelength thickness were recently established as versatile platforms for the enhanced and tailorable generation of entangled photon pairs. The small dimensions and inherent stability of integrated metasurface sources are attractive for free-space applications in quantum communications, sensing, and imaging, yet this remarkable potential remained unexplored. Here, we formulate and experimentally demonstrate the unique benefits and practical potential of nonlinear metasurfaces for quantum imaging at infrared wavelengths, facilitating an efficient protocol combining ghost and all-optical scanning imaging. The metasurface incorporates a subwavelength-scale silica metagrating on a lithium niobate thin film. Its distinguishing feature is the capability to all-optically scan the photon emission angle in the direction across the grating simply by tuning the pump beam wavelength. Simultaneously, the photon emission is broad and anti-correlated along the grating direction, allowing for ghost imaging. Thereby, we reconstruct the images of 2D objects using just a 1D detector array in the idler path and a bucket detector in the signal path, by recording the dependencies of photon coincidences on the pump wavelength. Our results reveal new possibilities for quantum imaging with ultra-large field of view and improved imaging resolution as compared to photon pairs from conventional bulky crystals. The demonstrated concept can be extended to multi-wavelength operation and other applications such as quantum object tracking, paving the way for advancements in quantum technologies using ultra-compact nanostructured metasurfaces.

Abstract:Quantum imaging has non-negligible advantages in terms of sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio, and novel imaging schemes. Based on metasurfaces, the information density and stability of the quantum imaging system can be further improved. Here we experimentally demonstrate that two patterns, simultaneously and independently superimposed on a high-efficiency dielectric metasurface, can be remotely switched via polarization-entangled photon pairs. Furthermore, using the time-correlated property of entangled photon pairs, the information carried by quantum light can be remarkably discriminated from background noise. This work confirms that the phase manipulation of quantum light with metasurfaces has a huge potential in the field of quantum imaging, quantum state tomography, and also promises real-world quantum metasurface devices.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement is a key resource that can be exploited for a range of applications such as quantum teleportation, quantum computation, and quantum cryptography. However, efforts to exploit entanglement in imaging systems have so far led to solutions such as ghost imaging, that have since found classical implementations. Here, we demonstrate an optical imaging protocol that relies uniquely on entanglement: Two polarizing patterns imprinted and superimposed on a metasurface are separately imaged only when using entangled photons. Unentangled light is not able to distinguish between the two patterns. Entangled single-photon imaging of functional metasurfaces promises advances towards the use of nanostructured subwavelength thin devices in quantum information protocols and a route to efficient quantum state tomography.

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces open new avenues for precise wavefront control of light for integrated quantum technology. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid integrated quantum photonic system that is capable to entangle and disentangle two-photon spin states at a dielectric metasurface. By interfering single-photon pairs at a nanostructured dielectric metasurface, a path-entangled two-photon NOON state with circular polarization is generated that exhibits a quantum HOM interference visibility of 86 $\pm$ 4%. Furthermore, we demonstrate nonclassicality and phase sensitivity in a metasurface-based interferometer with a fringe visibility of 86.8 $\pm$ 1.1 % in the coincidence counts. This high visibility proves the metasurface-induced path entanglement inside the interferometer. Our findings provide a promising way to hybrid-integrated quantum technology with high-dimensional functionalities in various applications like imaging, sensing, and computing.

Abstract:Plasmonics and metamaterials have recently been shown to allow the control and interaction with non-classical states of light, a rather counterintuitive finding given the high losses typically encountered in these systems. Here, we demonstrate a range of functionalities that are allowed with correlated and entangled photons that are used to illuminate multiple, overlaid patterns on plasmonic metasurfaces. Correlated photons allow to nonlocally determine the pattern that is imaged or, alternatively to un-scramble an image that is otherwise blurred. Entangled photons allow a more important functionality whereby the images imprinted on the metasurface are individually visible only when illuminated with one of the entangled photons. Correlated single photon imaging of functional metasurfaces could therefore promise advances towards the use of nanostructured subwavelength thin devices in quantum information protocols.

Abstract:A typical imaging scenario requires three basic ingredients: (1) a light source that emits light, which in turn interacts and scatters off the object of interest; (2) detection of the light being scattered from the object and (3) a detector with spatial resolution. These indispensable ingredients in typical imaging scenarios may limit their applicability in the imaging of biological or other sensitive specimens due to unavailable photon-starved detection capabilities and inevitable damage induced by interaction. Here, we propose and experimentally realize a quantum imaging protocol that alleviates all three requirements. By embedding a single-photon Michelson interferometer into a nonlinear interferometer based on induced coherence and harnessing single-pixel imaging technique, we demonstrate interaction-free, single-pixel quantum imaging of a structured object with undetected photons. Thereby, we push the capability of quantum imaging to the extreme point in which no interaction is required between object and photons and the detection requirement is greatly reduced. Our work paves the path for applications in characterizing delicate samples with single-pixel imaging at silicon-detectable wavelengths.

Abstract:Lenses play a key role in quantum imaging but inevitably constrain the spatial resolution and working wavelength. In this work we develop and demonstrate a lensless quantum ghost imaging by engineering quadratic nonlinear photonic crystals. With a transverse parabolic domain modulation introduced into the lithium tantalate crystal, the entangled photon pairs generated from parametric down-conversion will self-focus. Therefore we can dispense with additional lenses to construct imaging in a nonlocal way. The lensless imaging is found to follow a specific imaging formula where the effective focal length is determined by the domain modulation and pump wavelength. Additionally, two nonlocal images can be retrieved when the entangled photon pair is generated under two concurrent noncollinear phase-matching geometries. Our work provides a principle and method to realize lensless ghost imaging, which may be extended to other wavelengths and stimulate new types of practical quantum technologies.

Abstract:Quantum correlation of two‐photon states is utilized to suppress the environmental noise in imaging down to the single‐photon level. However, the size of the coherence area of the photon pairs limits the applications of quantum imaging based on spatial correlations. Here, a quantum imaging scheme exploiting twisted photon pairs with tunable spatial‐correlation regions to circumvent this limitation is proposed. A bulk‐density coincidence is employed to enhance the imaging signal. Specifically, a re‐scaled image signal is introduced, which is immune to the background intensity distribution profile of the photon pulse. A destructive interference between the anti‐bunched photon pair and bunched photon pair in the imaging process is revealed. This work can pave a way for twisted‐photon‐based quantum holography and quantum microscopy. The quantum theory of Hong–Ou–Mandel (HOM) interference of 3D‐structured photon pairs is developed. A quantum imaging scheme is proposed exploiting HOM interference of twisted photon pairs. The results can be utilized to circumvent the limitation due to the insufficient size of the coherence area of photon pairs in quantum imaging.

Abstract:Significance A quantum diffraction imaging technique is proposed, whereby one photon of an entangled pair is diffracted off a sample and detected in coincidence with its twin. Scanning the photon that did not interact with matter, we show that the phase information imprinted in the state of the field is detectable. We discuss several experimental applications: ( i ) Obtaining real-space images in diffraction imaging avoids the “phase problem.” ( ii ) The image scales as ∝ I p 1 / 2 with the interacting photons, where I p is the source intensity, compared with ∝ I p of classical diffraction. This makes weak-field imaging possible, avoiding damage to delicate samples. ( iii ) A Schmidt decomposition of the field can be used for image enhancement by reweighting the Schmidt modes contributions.

Abstract:Two-photon state with spatial entanglement is an essential resource for testing fundamental laws of quantum mechanics and various quantum applications. Its creation typically relies on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in bulky nonlinear crystals where the tunability of spatial entanglement is limited. Here, we predict that ultrathin nonlinear lithium niobate metasurfaces can generate and diversely tune spatially entangled photon pairs. The spatial properties of photons including the emission pattern, rate, and degree of spatial entanglement are analysed theoretically with the coupled mode theory and Schmidt decomposition method. We show that by leveraging the strong angular dispersion of the metasurface, the degree of spatial entanglement quantified by the Schmidt number can be decreased or increased by changing the pump laser wavelength and a Gaussian beam size. This flexibility can facilitate diverse quantum applications of entangled photon states generated from nonlinear metasurfaces.

Abstract:Metasurfaces consisting of nanoscale structures are underpinning new physical principles for the creation and shaping of quantum states of light. Multiphoton states that are entangled in spatial or angular domains are an essential resource for many quantum applications; however, their production traditionally relies on bulky nonlinear crystals. We predict and demonstrate experimentally the generation of spatially entangled photon pairs through spontaneous parametric down-conversion from a metasurface incorporating a nonlinear thin film of lithium niobate covered by a silica meta-grating. We measure the correlations of photon pairs and identify their spatial antibunching through violation of the classical Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, witnessing the presence of multimode entanglement. Simultaneously, the photon-pair rate is strongly enhanced by 450 times as compared to unpatterned films because of high-quality-factor resonances. These results pave the way to miniaturization of various quantum devices by incorporating ultrathin metasurfaces functioning as room temperature sources of quantum-entangled photons.

Abstract:Quantum imaging with undetected light (QIUL) can retrieve amplitude and phase information of an object by exploiting the quantum correlations of photon-pairs generated through spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), where the illumination and detection can be carried at very distinct wavelength ranges. This fact allows to benefit from a mature detection technology in the visible spectral range, while probing the object at a more exotic wavelength. Here we experimentally implement a QIUL approach with Fourier off-axis holography in a hybrid-type induced-coherence non-linear interferometer. Our approach reconstructs the amplitude and phase information of an object with a single shot in a wide-field configuration, being an alternative in front of techniques that require multiple acquisition frames, such as phase-shifting holography.

Abstract:In standard quantum weak measurements, preselection and postselection of quantum states are implemented in the same photon. Here we go beyond this restrictive setting and demonstrate that the preselection and postselection can be performed in two different photons, if the two photons are polarization entangled. The Pancharatnam-Berry phase metasurface is incorporated in the weak measurement system to perform weak coupling between probe wave function and spin observable. By introducing nonlocal weak measurement into the microscopy imaging system, it allows us to remotely switch different microscopy imaging modes of pure-phase objects, including bright-field, differential, and phase reconstruction. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the nonlocal weak-measurement scheme can prevent almost all environmental noise photons from detection and thus achieves a higher image contrast than the standard scheme at a low photon level. Abstract:Metasurfaces, with their capability to control all possible dimensions of light, have become integral to quantum optical applications, including quantum state generation, operation, and tomography. In this work, we utilize a metasurface to generate polarization-hologram hybrid entanglement between a signal-idler photon pair to construct a quantum hologram. The properties of the quantum hologram can be revealed by collapsing the polarization degree of freedom of the idler photon, inducing interference between two holographic states of the signal photon, as a meaningful and selective erasure of the holographic content. In contrary, interference disappears when the idler photon is detected without observing polarization. This process can be further interpreted as a quantum holographic eraser, where the erasing action is visualized with erased contents in holograms. Our construction of polarization-hologram hybrid entangled state with metasurfaces will be useful for quantum communication with enhanced robustness, anti-counterfeiting applications through the additional quantum degrees of freedom, and as an emerging platform for exploring fundamental quantum concepts for entanglement and non-locality.
