Abstract:Conventional methods for the rectification of inverse-time overcurrent (ITOC) protection rely on a fixed topology, which makes the setting workload in large networks very heavy and difficult to adapt to topological changes. An adaptive fault identification (AFI) scheme is proposed that can be applied to ring or large networks. It eliminates the need to know in advance the primary/backup coordination of the relays and the need for stepwise setting of the inverse-time parameters. The positive sequence fault component voltages (PSFCVs) with naturally distributed characteristics are first analyzed. Using the communication channels in existing wide-area protection systems (WAPS), only the protection action signal (PAS) of primary protection are transmitted. A fault tree is obtained which automatically reflects the relationship between the relays and the fault points. Next, a user-defined inverse-time characteristic equation (ITCE) and a method for online adaptive setting of the parameters are given. The tripping time calculated from this is only relevant for each line parameter and can be adapted to the case of long or short lines. Finally, the IEEE30-bus test system is built in PSCAD/EMTDC to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme for different network topologies and topology changes, and when distributed generations (DGs) are connected to the grid.
