Research on Metrics and Models for Objective Information

Abstract:In this contemporary era, the importance of information is undisputed, but there has never been a common understanding of information, nor has a unanimous conclusion been reached by studies conducted on information metrics. On the basis of previous studies conducted, this paper analyzes the important achievements in research conducted into the properties and metrics of information, as well as their main insufficiencies, and discusses the essence, connotations, mathematical expressions, and basic problems related to information. On the basis of the understanding of the objectivity of information, it then proposes definitions and a sextuple model of objective information, discusses the basic properties of information, and explores the definitions and mathematical expressions of nine kinds of information metrics: extensity, detailedness, sustainability, richness, containability, delay, distribution, validity, and matchability. Through these metrics, this paper establishes a basic underlying framework for objective information theory that provides comprehensive support for systematic analysis and research on information and information systems.
