Abstract:The family plays a determining role in the development of the emotional well-being of its members. Self-injury is a phenomenon that has been growing in the world statistics in adolescents, so there is an enormous concern for the presence of risk factors, both individual and psychosocial. The relationship between satisfaction with family life and the emergent behavior of non-suicidal self-injury was established. The study had a quantitative, correlational, non-experimental, cross-sectional design. The population consisted of 200 high school students. The results indicate that a chaotic and unsatisfactory family environment may be a predisposing factor for the presence of emergent non-suicidal self-injurious behavior. Adolescents present self-injurious practices for various reasons: feelings of loneliness, insecurity behaviors, inadequate response to adversity. In addition, self-determination theory offers a plausible explanation for the relationship found in this research. The satisfaction of basic psychological needs, such as the need for competence, relatedness, and autonomy, can be achieved through a healthy and supportive family environment, which in turn can improve the emotional well-being of adolescents and reduce the risk of self-injurious behaviors. Associations of psychological resilience with family cohesion and non-suicidal self-injury of middle school students in Fujian Province

Abstract:Objective To explore the relationship between family cohesion, psychological resilience and non-suicidal self-injury among middle school students. Methods By using the stratified random cluster sampling method, 2 065 students from 4 middle school from Fujian province were investigated with family cohesion scale, adolescent psychological resilience scale and adolescent self-injury behavior questionnaire. Results The report rate of self-injury was 40.34%, which differed by childhood migration experiences, parenting style as well as academic pressure ( χ 2 = 11.66, 29.45, 12.48, P <0.01). Total scores and dimensional scales in family cohesion and psychological resilience showed significant differences in students with or without self-injury ( t = - 8. 33, -12.08, -7.29, -11.53, -3.38, -7.37, -7.68, P <0.01) . The family cohesion was positively correlated with the psychological resilience and each dimension ( r = 0.27-0.56, P <0.01), but negatively correlated with non-suicidal self-injury ( r = -0.18, P <0.01). The psychological resilience and each dimension were negatively correlated with non-suicidal self-injury ( r = - 0. 24-- 0. 14, P < 0.01). Psychological resilience had a partial mediating effect between family cohesion and non-suicidal self-injury, with mediating effect accounting for 61.11% of the total effect. Conclusion Psychological resilience played a mediating role between family cohesion and non-suicidal self-injury. By promoting family cohesion to improve psychological resilience, it is helpful to prevent non-sui- cidal self-injury among middle school students. 【摘要】目的探究中学生家庭亲密度、心理弹性与自伤行为之间的关系及内在机制，为中学生自伤行为预防和干预提供科学依据。方法采用分层整群抽样的方法，选取福建省4所中学的2 065名学生，采用家庭亲密度量表、青少年心理弹性量表和青少年自我伤害行为问卷进行测量。结果中学生自伤行为报告率为40.34%，是否有留守经历、不同家庭教养方式、不同学习压力学生自伤行为报告率差异均有统计学意义(χ 2 值分别为11.66,29.45，12.48，P值均<0.01)。在家庭亲密度得分、心理弹性总分及5个维度得分上，有无自伤行为学生差异均有统计学意义（ t 值分别为-8.33，-12.08，-7.29, -11.53，-3.38，-7.37，-7.68，P值均<0.01 )。家庭亲密度总分和心理弹性总分及各维度得分均呈正相关（r = 0.27 ~ 0.56,P 值均<0.01)，与自伤行为呈负相关 (r = -0.18，P<0.01);心理弹性总分及各维度与自伤行为均呈负相关（r =-0.24~-0.14，P 值均<0.01)。心理弹性在家庭亲密度和自伤行为间起部分中介作用，中介效应占总效应的61.11%。结论心理弹性在家庭亲密度和自伤行为间起中介作用，可通过促进家庭亲密度、提升心理弹性，预防中学生自伤行为。

Abstract:International Journal of Social Psychiatry, Ahead of Print. Background:Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents represents an alarming public health concern worldwide. Both family function and family socioeconomic status (SES) were found to play important roles in adolescent NSSI engagement. However, the effects of family function on NSSI among adolescents in different family SES are not well evidenced.Aims:This study aimed to explore how family functions (adaptation, partnership, growth, affection, and resolve) affect NSSI among adolescents in different family SES levels.Methods:Data used in this study was derived from the Students' Mental Health Network Project (SMHN), a survey conducted among 8,872 pairs of adolescent-caregivers in a city in central China. Socio-demographic characteristics, family function, NSSI, adverse life events, and depressive symptoms were measured among adolescents. Family SES were generated from caregivers self-reported information using principal component analysis. Chi-square test and multivariate binary logistic regression analyses were adopted to analyze the effects of family function on NSSI.Results:It revealed that 10.2% of adolescents reported engaging in NSSI in the past 12 months. Poor family function and high family SES were positively associated with NSSI. Partnership, both adaptation and affection, resolve were NSSI-protective factors for adolescents in low, middle, high family SES, respectively.Conclusions:Efforts to address NSSI should acknowledge the association between family function and NSSI among adolescents in different family SES levels.

Abstract:Objective To examine epidemiology of non-suicidal self-injury among college students and possible relationships with psychological traits and parental style.Methods Seven hundred and ninety-four students from two colleges in Beijing were selected and were examined on occurrence and frequency of five types of non-suicidal self-injury during the past year.Self-esteem,self frustration,depressive symptom,borderline personality disorder symptoms,invalid family environment,parental style was assessed.Results About 11.8% of the participants reported one or more times self-injury during the past year,with males(15.3%) being more likely than females(8.7%).Multiple logistic regression analyses suggested that the parenting style of punishment and sternness was the risk factor for self-injury(Males:β= 3.42,P=0.025;Females:β=2.33,P=0.001),while the parenting style of emotional warmth and understanding was the protective factor(Males:β=-2.10,P=0.002;Females:β=-1.60,P=0.045).Conclusion Non-suicidal self-injury is prevalent among college students.Parenting style has a significant impact on the engagement in self-injury,suggesting that prevention and intervention strategies should focus on family counseling.
Interparental conflict and adolescent non-suicidal self-injury: the roles of harsh parenting, identity confusion, and friendship quality

Abstract:Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents has become a serious public health problem in many countries. Based on the integrated theoretical model of NSSI and the framework of developmental psychopathology, we tested the mediating mechanisms and the moderator of the association between interparental conflict and NSSI by constructing a moderated serial mediation model. 589 adolescents (50.1% girls; ages 12–19 years) were recruited from a secondary school in China. Participants anonymously completed questionnaires regarding interparental conflict, harsh parenting, identity confusion, friendship quality, and NSSI. Regression analysis showed that interparental conflict was positively associated with adolescent NSSI, and this association was mediated by harsh parenting and identity confusion independently. Interparental conflict also indirectly predicted NSSI through the serial mediation effect of harsh parenting and identity confusion. Friendship quality weakened the relationship between identity confusion and NSSI. The findings are consistent with the framework of developmental psychopathology, and highlight the important role of friendship quality in the prevention and intervention of NSSI.

Abstract:Prior research has demonstrated a negative correlation between the parent-child relationship and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents. However, dysfunctional parent-child relationships encompass a variety of forms, and the potential disparities in the impact of different types on NSSI remain uncertain. The current study examined the impact of a dysfunctional parent-child relationship on adolescent NSSI through psychological and physical mechanisms. Additionally, the study explored the influence of self-criticism and sensation seeking on these effects. The present study comprises two samples. Sample 1 comprises 725 high school students (mean age of 15.44 ± 0.55 years), while sample 2 consists of 341 college students (mean age of 18.41 ± 0.73 years). Each participant filled out the Adolescent Non-Suicidal Self-Injurious Assessment Questionnaire, the Parent-Child Conflict Questionnaire, the Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scales, the Self-criticism Subscale of the Depressive Experiences Questionnaire, and the Sensation Seeking Questionnaire. The results suggested that parent-child conflict may influence NSSI in high school students both directly and indirectly through the effects of self-criticism and sensation seeking. In college students, the direct effect of parent-child conflict on NSSI was not significant, and self-criticism completely mediated the relationship between parent-child conflict and NSSI. Additionally, parental-child corporal punishment was directly related to NSSI for both high school and college students, and the mediation effects of self-criticism and sensation-seeking were not significant in either of them. In addition, the direct effect of parental-child corporal punishment was greater than that of parent-child conflict. The current study revealed that two distinct forms of dysfunctional parent-child relationships exhibit inconsistent patterns of influence on NSSI during both early and late adolescence.

The Psychosocial Correlates of Non-suicidal Self-Injury Within a Sample of Adolescents With Mood Disorder

Abstract:Background: According to the integrated theoretical model, adolescents' behaviors were the outcome of the complex interplay between multiple levels. Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a serious and high prevalent problem among adolescents with mood disorders. However, a systematic perspective on psychosocial correlates among Chinese clinical adolescents is still rare. Method: The impact of several factors at the individual (i.e., sex, age, self-esteem, and psychological distress), family (i.e., family structure, family income, and family support), and social level (i.e., living environment, peer support, and teacher support) on the frequency of NSSI behaviors were investigated in the current study. This research included 621 Chinese adolescents with mood disorders from 20 hospitals. Results: Three-steps hierarchical regression analyses indicated that lower levels of psychological distress and higher levels of self-esteem were most associated with less frequency of NSSI behaviors. In addition, family support was negatively associated with the frequency of NSSI behaviors. After controlling the factors at individual and family levels, no significant association was found between the factors at the social level and the frequency of NSSI behaviors. Conclusion: These findings provide preliminary support for the notion that adolescent self-esteem and family support may effectively shield them from problematic behavior; nevertheless, adolescents suffering from more emotional pain can be even riskier. Thus, further intervention strategies should consider the non-independence of individual capacities, co-combinatory effects of mood disorder, and family environment in treating those vulnerable Chinese adolescents.

Abstract:Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a major public health issue in college students. However, there is a lack of evidence on the longitudinal association between family dysfunction and NSSI as well as its underlying mediating and moderating mechanisms. Thus, we hypothesized whether depressive symptoms mediated the association between family dysfunction and NSSI, and whether this indirect effect was moderated by self-compassion. Data are from the first three waves of an ongoing longitudinal study, conducted at half-year intervals. A total of 5608 freshmen (48.2% female, M age = 18.63, SD = 0.88) completed self-report questionnaires regarding family dysfunction, depressive symptoms, self-compassion, and NSSI. After adjusting for covariates and previous outcomes, mediation analyses revealed that depressive symptoms at T 2 mediated the relationship between family dysfunction at T 1 and NSSI at T 3 . Moderated mediation analyses revealed that self-compassion weakened the strength of the relationship between family dysfunction at T 1 and depressive symptoms at T 2 , as well as that between depressive symptoms at T 2 and NSSI at T 3 . This study highlights the importance of considering multiple environmental and individual factors to understand the development of NSSI.

Abstract:Background It is essential to investigate the experiences behind why adolescents start and continue to self-harm in order to develop targeted treatment and prevent future self-harming behaviours. Aims The aims of this study are to understand the motivations for initiating and repeating nonfatal self-harm, the different methods used between first-time and repeated self-harm and the reasons that adolescents do not seek help from health services. Methods Adolescents with repeated nonfatal self-harm experiences were recruited to participate in individual, semi-structured qualitative interviews. The interviews were analysed with interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results We found that nonfatal self-harm among adolescents occurred comparatively early and was often triggered by specific reasons. However, the subsequent nonfatal self-harm could be causeless, with repeated self-harm becoming a maladaptive coping strategy to handle daily pressure and negative emotions. The choice of tools used was related to the ease of accessibility, the life-threatening risk and the size of the scars. Adolescents often concealed their scars on purpose, which made early identification insufficient. Peer influence, such as online chat groups encouraging self-harm by discussing and sharing self-harm pictures, could also lead to increased self-harm. The results also included participants’ opinions on how to stop nonfatal self-harm and their dissatisfaction with the current healthcare services. Conclusions The current study provides important implications both for early identification and interventions for adolescents who engage in repeated nonfatal self-harm, and for individualising treatment planning that benefits them. It is also worthwhile to further investigate how peer influence and social media may affect self-harm in adolescents.

Abstract:The present study examined the relationship among physical abuse, psychological abuse, perceived family functioning and adolescent suicidal ideation in Shanghai, China. Perceived family functioning was investigated as a possible moderator between physical abuse, psychological abuse and suicidal ideation. A cross sectional survey using convenience sampling was conducted. A total of 560 valid self-administered questionnaires were completed by the students aged from 12 to 17 in Shanghai. Descriptive statistical analyses, Pearson correlations analyses, and hierarchical regression analyses were adopted as methods of data analyses. Results indicated that physical abuse was significantly associated with greater adolescent suicidal ideation, while a higher level of perceived family functioning was significantly associated with lower suicidal ideation. However, psychological abuse was not associated with suicidal ideation. Perceived family functioning was shown to be a moderator between physical abuse and suicidal ideation. Specifically, mutuality and family communication moderated the relationship between physical abuse and suicidal ideation. To decrease adolescent suicidal ideation, measures are suggested to prevent physical abuse and enhance family functioning. First, it is important to increase the parents’ awareness of the meaning and boundaries of physical abuse, as well as the role it plays in contributing to adolescent suicidal ideation. Second, parents should be taught appropriate parenting skills and knowledge and be guided to treat the children as individuals with their unique personality, rights and privileges. Third, it is important to promote family harmony, effective communication as well as mutual trust, concern and understanding among family members.
Effect of Parenting Style, attachment to parents and self-compassion on the occurrence and recovery motivation for non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents

Abstract:Background Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a worldwide mental health problem that deserves thorough investigation. This study aims to explore the effect of parenting styles, attachment to parents, and self-compassion on the occurrence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior in adolescents and whether these factors influence their recovery motivation. Methods A total of 132 adolescents who had engaged in NSSI within the last year and 72 adolescents who had never engaged in NSSI were recruited from the Shenzhen Kangning Hospital and from primary and secondary schools and communities. Differences in the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA), Egma Minn av. Bardndosnauppforstran (EMBU), and Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) of participants were compared. A binary logistic model was established to measure the odds ratios of these variables on the occurrence of NSSI. In the NSSI adolescent sample, separate binary logistic models were created with NSSI impulse inhibition, NSSI resistance activity, and NSSI recovery motivation as dependent variables and with parenting styles, attachment to parents, and self-compassion as independent variables. Results Compared with adolescents with no NSSI behavior, those who had engaged in NSSI within the past year had higher scores on the HAMD, as well as higher EMBU-negative father parental behavior (punishment, excessive interference, rejection, and overprotection), EMBU-negative mother parental behavior (excessive interference, rejection, and punishment), and SCS negative self-compassion scores. Moreover, adolescents with NSSI had lower EMBU-father emotional warmth, EMBU-mother emotional warmth, IPPA-attachment to father, IPPA-attachment to mother, and SCS positive self-compassion scores. Current depressive symptoms and maternal punishment are risk factors for NSSI in adolescents, while positive self-compassion was a protective factor. Positive self-compassion can positively predict NSSI impulse inhibition, NSSI resistance activity, and NSSI recovery motivation. However, we unexpectedly found that the father’s emotional warmth negatively predicts NSSI resistance activity. Conclusion This study found that positive self-compassion has a significant impact on the prevention of and recovery from NSSI behavior in adolescents.

The effects of childhood abuse, depression, and self-compassion on adolescent nonsuicidal self-injury: A moderated mediation model

Abstract:Background: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a widespread public health issue in adolescents. Exploring the risk and protective variables of NSSI is critical for prevention and intervention. Based on the experiential avoidance model (Chapman et al., 2006) and Nock's (2009) integrated model of NSSI, the current study tested a moderated mediation model to examine the impact of two risk factors, childhood abuse and depression, and one protective factor, self-compassion, on NSSI. Methods: Self-report measures were conducted among 758 Chinese adolescents (329 females and 429 males, mean age = 14.16 years, SD = 1.92) in Hong Kong, China regarding childhood abuse, depression, self-compassion, and NSSI. Results: Childhood abuse was found to be positively linked to NSSI, and this connection was mediated by depression. Self-compassion weakened the strength between childhood abuse and NSSI, along with that between childhood abuse and depression. Conclusions: These results assist in understanding how NSSI develops and facilitate future studies to investigate how the risk and protective variables for NSSI interact. The clinical application of these findings was also discussed.
Influence of stress on self-injury among Chinese left-behind adolescents is not cast in stone: Synergistic roles of family protective factors

Abstract:Background: Left-behind adolescents are vulnerable to stressful life events and often engage in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), which is a growing public concern in China. However, little is known about the synergistic protective effect of family resources on the relationship between stressful life events and NSSI in these adolescents. Objective: Based on theories of family socialization and resilience, the aim of this study was to examine the synergistic protective role of maternal knowledge and mother-child cohesion in buffering the effect of stressful life events on NSSI in father-absent left-behind adolescents. Methods: This study used two-wave longitudinal data. The analytical sample included 673 adolescents (Mage = 13.47 ± 1.11 years, 48 % male) who were enlisted from 4 junior high schools in rural China. Respondents completed questionnaires on stressful life events, parental knowledge, parent-child cohesion, and NSSI at two-time points. Results: The effects of stressful life events on NSSI were significant in father-absent left-behind adolescents. Additionally, maternal knowledge moderated the associations between stressful life events and NSSI in father-absent left-behind adolescents. Moreover, maternal knowledge and mother-child cohesion were found to play synergistic protective roles in the relationship between stressful life events and NSSI. In father-absent left-behind adolescents, only high maternal knowledge and high-quality mother-child cohesion could eliminate the negative effect of stressful life events on NSSI. Conclusion: The findings underscore the synergistic protective roles of maternal knowledge and mother-child cohesion in buffering the negative effect of stressful life events on NSSI in father-absent left-behind adolescents. Both maternal knowledge and mother-child cohesion should be considered in interventions aimed at reducing NSSI in these adolescents.

Abstract:Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is common among adolescents and is associated with a range of detrimental consequences. Family, teachers, and friends are essential sources of social support for adolescents. Increased social support from these sources may reduce NSSI behaviors among adolescents. However, it is uncertain if each source of social support retains its significance when their influences are evaluated simultaneously, and how each source influences the others to impact NSSI behaviors. To address this gap, this research investigated the direct and indirect effects of each source of social support on adolescent NSSI using cross-lagged panel model (CLPM), as well as whether these relationships varied by sex. A total of 3098 Chinese adolescents with a range of 10 to 15 years old (Mage = 13.27, SD = 0.73, 42.4% girls) completed assessments on three waves across approximately two years. The results indicated that teacher support compared to family and friend support showed the strongest association with NSSI behaviors and mediated the relationship between family support and NSSI. These findings highlight teacher support as a hub in the role of social support on NSSI and emphasize the importance of the connections between teacher and family support.

The relationship between family functioning and non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents: A structural equation modeling analysis

Abstract:Background: Previous research has suggested that depressive symptoms, emotional competence, and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) may mediate the association between family functioning and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the mediation effects of depressive symptoms, emotional competence, and COVID-related PTSS on the relationship between family functioning and NSSI in adolescents. Method: A sample of 5854 adolescents was recruited from June 16 to July 8, 2020. The data for family functioning, depressive symptoms, emotional competence, COVID-related PTSS, and NSSI behavior of adolescents were collected via self-reported questionnaires. A structural equation model was constructed to examine the relationship, and a bootstrap analysis was conducted to evaluate the mediation effects. Results: The reporting rate of adolescent NSSI was 30.2%. The poor family functioning was positively associated with adolescent NSSI (β = 0.130, 95% CI = 0.093-0.182), which was mediated by depression with effect size of 0.231 (95% CI = 0.201-0.257). The pathway coefficients between emotional competence and NSSI, and depression, COVID-related PTSS and NSSI, though statistically significant were unlikely to be clinically meaning with values of 0.057 and 0.015. There was no mediating effect by COVID-related PTSS. The pathways initially constructed between family functioning and COVID-related PTSS, emotional capacity and COVID-related PTSS were not been verified. Limitations: It was unclear whether this mediational effect would be supported in a longitudinal design. The application and extension of this model toward other regions and countries, and different ages need to be further explored. Conclusion: The interventions of adolescent NSSI should focus on both the family level and individual levels. Improving family environment, screening depressive symptoms, enhancing emotional competence and lessening COVID-related PTSS may reduce NSSI.

Abstract:Introduction: Family environment is the primary environment for adolescent growth and development, which is believed to have an important impact on the occurrence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior in adolescents. This study aimed to explore the effects of family environment cognition and cognitive differences perceived by adolescents and their parents on the treatment effects of NSSI in adolescents and to provide more potential perspectives for NSSI treatment. Methods: A one-year prospective longitudinal sub-cohort investigation was carried out among 199 adolescents engaged in NSSI and one of their important guardians from the Longitudinal Psychosomatic Disease Study (LoPDS). The NSSI behaviors of adolescents were evaluated at 3 months, 6 months and 1 year after enrollment. The family environment scale (FES) and NSSI Behavior Questionnaire were used as assessment tools for family environment and adolescents NSSI behaviors. Multiple linear regression was used to investigate the role of family environment perception difference in the treatment effect of adolescent NSSI. Results: After one year of follow-up, the perceived self-injury impulse score in recent 2 weeks, self-injury impulse frequency in recent 2 weeks, total number of self-injury in recent 2 weeks decreased significantly. The higher the adolescent family cohesion (Beta: 1.130, 95% CI: 0.886,1.373; p=0.032), parental family expressiveness (Beta: 0.818, 95% CI: 0.375,1.260; p=0.037) and parental family active-recreational orientation score (Beta: 0.609, 95% CI: 0.236,0.981; p=0.048), the better the treatment effect. However, higher adolescent family conflict (Beta: -0.838, 95% CI: -1.377,-0.298; p=0.024) were associated with lower treatment outcomes. The greater the cognitive difference between parents and adolescents in family cohesion (Beta: -1.307, 95% CI: -2.074,-0.539; p=0.014) and family conflict(Beta: -0.665, 95% CI: -0.919,-0.410; p=0.037), the worse the therapeutic effect of NSSI might be. Discussion: There were certain differences in the cognition of family relationships between parents and adolescents, and subjective family relationship cognition and cognitive differences had a significant effect on the treatment effect of NSSI in adolescents. Helping them identify the cause of cognitive differences and conducting systematic family therapy from the points of difference may be another perspective to improve the treatment effect of NSSI in adolescents.

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to define the characteristics of adolescents who have engaged in self-harm behavior and ascertain the risk factors. Methods: From January 2013 to January 2014, 4,176 adolescents from senior middle schools in Linyi, China, were administered four questionnaire surveys to ascertain the following: incidence of self-harm behavior regarding the frequency of different self-harm behaviors by group (never/one to five times/greater than five times in the last 6 months) and then comparing the self-harm behavior of the different subgroups; symptom self-check, comparing the differences between the adolescents with self-harm behavior and without in nine subscales (somatization, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, fear, paranoid, and psychosis); Adolescent Self-Rating Life Events Check List scores; and Egna Minnenav Barndoms Uppfostran (EMBU) scores. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the risk factors of self-harm in adolescents. Results: The incidence of adolescent self-harm was 27.60%; the occurrence of adolescent self-harm was closely related to their mental health status, stressful life events, and EMBU. Being female, an urban student, or an only child; having poor school performance or experiences of stressful life events, harsh parenting styles, or excessive interference; and poor mental health were the risk factors for adolescent self-harm. Conclusions: The incidence of adolescent self-harm was high, and their mental health status, stressful life events, and EMBU affected the occurrence of adolescent self-harm, which is an issue that needs greater attention.
