Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of the Oleinik’s solution to the steady Prandtl equation when the outer flow U(x)=1 . Serrin proved that the Oleinik’s solution converges to the famous Blasius solution u̅ in L^∞ _y sense as x→ +∞ . The explicit decay estimates of u-u̅ and its derivatives were proved by Iyer (ARMA 237,2020) when the initial data is a small localized perturbation of the Blasius profile. In this paper, we prove the explicit decay estimate of u-u̅ for general initial data with exponential decay. We also prove the decay estimates of its derivatives when the initial data has an additional concave assumption. Our proof is based on the maximum principle techniques. The key ingredient is to find a series of barrier functions.

Abstract:The temporal instability of incompressible particle-laden Blasius boundary layer is investigated numerically using perturbation method and finite difference. The stability characteristics are calculated for varying Stokes' numbers and particle concentrations. The results, some of which agree with the calculations of earlier authors, show that the addition of fine particles tends to destabilize the flow while addition of the coarse particles has a stabilizing action. There is critical value for the effect of Stokes' number, and the value is about 1. The stabilizing effect of particles depends monotonously on the particle concentration, the critical Reynolds' number is directly proportional to the concentration in the range of stabilizing area, and vice versa for small Stokes' number. The most damped mode occurs when Stokes' number is of order 10 for different particle concentrations. The difference of perturbation velocity between the particle-laden flow and the clean gas flow is insignificant for fine particles, while the difference for coarse particles is obvious. For fine particles laden flow, the viscosity is reduced relatively because of the addition of particles, and the critical Reynolds' number is smaller than that of clean gas. For coarse particles, the interaction between particles and clean gas is remarkable because of the difference of perturbation velocity, and then the viscous dissipation tends to stabilize the flow.

Abstract:Orr-Sommerfeld equation is solved numerically using expansions in Chebyshev polynomials. The numerical results show a good agreement with Howarth's solution, with relatively low computational cost. This method is then applied to the stability of flat plate boundary layer flow compared with the finite difference method; our study shows that the expansions in Chebyshev polynomials are more suitable for the solution of hydrodynamic stability problems than the expansions in finite difference method.

Abstract:This note is to survey our recent study on the stability and instability of the Prandtl boundary layers in incompressible viscous flows near a physical boundary. Both of the two-dimensional and three-dimensional problems are considered. First, we present an energy method for studying thewell-posedness of the two-dimensional Prandtl boundary layer equations in Sobolev spaces under the Oleinik monotonicity condition on the tangential velocity field. Then, we give an instability result for the Prandtl equations in three space variables, which shows that the monotonicity condition of tangential velocity fields is not sufficient for the well-posedness of the three-dimensional Prandtl equations. Later, we present a well-posedness result of the three-dimensional Prandtl equations for a special structured flow. These results show that a shear flow is linearly and nonlinearly stable for the three-dimensional Prandtl equations, if and only if, the tangential velocity field direction is invariant with respect to the normal variable.

Abstract:A weakly non-linear stability analysis of two phase flow in the Blasius boundary layer has been carried out. Two mathematical models have been established based on the perturbation shape preserved assumption and linear stability model of two phase flow proposed by Stuart [On the non-linear mechanics of hydrodynamic stability, J. Fluid Mech. 4 (1958) 1–21] and Saffman [On the stability of laminar flow of dusty gas, J. Fluid Mech. 13 (1962) 120–128], respectively. The perturbation model and the perturbation energy balance equation are solved numerically with Chebyshev spectral method and artificial boundary condition. The numerical program adopted in the present study is verified by comparison with former works. The results show that the non-linear interaction between mean flow and perturbation reduces the growth rate of perturbation, while the non-linear interaction between particle phase and gas phase increases the growth rate of perturbation amplitude. The distortion of the mean flow caused by the Reynolds stress modifies the rate of transfer of energy from the mean flow to disturbance. The existence of particle alleviates the distortedness. The result also indicates that the weakly non-linear stability theory is consistent to linear stability theory, and the addition of fine and coarse particles reduces and increases the critical Reynolds number.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the stability of shear flows of Prandtl type as (U(y/√(ν)),0) for the steady Navier-Stokes equations under a natural spectral assumption on the linearized NS operator. The key ingredient is to solve the Orr-Sommerfeld equation. For this, we develop a direct energy method combined with the compactness method, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:By using the paralinearization technique, we prove the well-posedness of the Prandtl equation for monotonic data in anisotropic Sobolev space with exponential weight and low regularity. The proof is very elementary, thus is expected to provide a new possible way for the zero-viscosity limit problem of the Navier–Stokes equations with the non-slip boundary condition.

Abstract:The proposal of this paper is to study the well-posedness and properties of solutions to the boundary layer problem for wind-driven oceanic current, which differs from the classical Prandtl boundary layer equations with a nonlocal integral term arising from the Coriolis force. First, under Oleinik's monotonic condition [O.A. Oleinik, Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR, 150(4):28-31, 1963] on the tangential velocity field, we obtain the local well-posedness of the boundary layer problem by using the Crocco transformation. Secondly, we show that the back flow point appears at the physical boundary in a finite time under certain constraint on the growth rate of the tangential velocity when both the initial tangential velocity and the upstream velocity are monotonically increasing with respect to the normal variable of the boundary, even if the momentum of the outer flow is favorable for the classical Prandtl equations, in the sense with this favorable condition there will be no back flow in the two-dimensional Prandtl boundary layer. This shows that the factor of the Coriolis force stimulates the appearance of the back flow of the boundary layer.

Abstract:In this paper, we give an instability criterion for the Prandtl equations in three-dimensional space, which shows that the monotonicity condition on tangential velocity fields is not sufficient for the well-posedness of the three-dimensional Prandtl equations, in contrast to the classical well-posedness theory of the two-dimensional Prandtl equations under the Oleinik monotonicity assumption. Both linear stability and nonlinear stability are considered. This criterion shows that the monotonic shear flow is linearly stable for the three-dimensional Prandtl equations if and only if the tangential velocity field direction is invariant with respect to the normal variable, and this result is an exact complement to our recent work (A well-posedness theory for the Prandtl equations in three space variables. arXiv:1405.5308, 2014) on the well-posedness theory for the three-dimensional Prandtl equations with a special structure.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 3, Page 3042-3081, June 2024. We continue our study on the global solution to the two-dimensional Prandtl's system for unsteady boundary layers in the class considered by Oleinik, provided that the pressure is favorable. First, by using a different method from [Z. Xin and L. Zhang, Adv. Math., 181 (2004), pp. 88–133], we gave a direct proof of existence of a global weak solution by a direct BV estimate. Then we prove the uniqueness and continuous dependence on data of such a weak solution to the initial boundary value problem. Finally, we show the smoothness of the weak solutions and then the global existence of smooth solutions.

Sharp Asymptotic Stability of Blasius Profile in the Steady Prandtl Equation

Abstract:This work presents an asymptotic stability result concerning the self-similar Blasius profiles $[\bar{u}, \bar{v}]$ of the stationary Prandtl boundary layer equation. Initially demonstrated by Serrin \cite{MR0282585}, the profiles $[\bar{u}, \bar{v}]$ were shown to act as a self-similar attractor of solutions $[u, v]$ to the Prandtl equation through the use of von Mises transform and maximal principle techniques. Specifically, as $x \to \infty$, $\|u - \bar{u}\|_{L^{\infty}_{y}} \to 0$. Iyer \cite{MR4097332} employed refined energy methods to derive an explicit convergence rate for initial data close to Blasius. Wang and Zhang \cite{MR4657422} utilized barrier function methods, removing smallness assumptions but imposing stronger asymptotic conditions on the initial data. It was suggested that the optimal convergence rate should be $\|u-\bar{u}\|_{L^{\infty}_{y}}\lesssim (x+1)^{-\frac{1}{2}}$, treating the stationary Prandtl equation as a 1-D parabolic equation in the entire space. In this study, we establish that $\|u - \bar{u}\|_{L^{\infty}_{y}} \lesssim (x+1)^{-1}$. Our proof relies on discovering nearly conserved low-frequency quantities and inherent degenerate structures at the boundary, which enhance the convergence rate through iteration techniques. Notably, the convergence rate we have demonstrated is optimal. We can find special solutions of Prandtl's equation such that the convergence between the solutions and the Blasius profile is exact, represented as $ (x+1)^{-1} $.

Full Regularity and Well-Posedness of the Nonlinear Unsteady Prandtl Equations with Robin or Dirichlet Boundary Condition

Abstract:In this paper, we study the full regularity and well-posedness of classical solutions to the nonlinear unsteady Prandtl equations with Robin or Dirichlet boundary condition in half space. Under Oleinik's monotonicity assumption, we prove the large time existence of classical solutions to the nonlinear Prandtl equations with Robin or Dirichlet boundary condition, when both initial vorticity and the general Euler flow are sufficiently small. For the general Euler flow, the vertical velocity of the Prandtl flow is unbounded. We prove that the Prandtl solutions preserve the full regularities in our solution spaces. The uniqueness and stability are also proved in the weighted Sobolev spaces.

Abstract:In an effort to study the stability of contact lines in fluids, we consider the dynamics of an incompressible viscous Stokes fluid evolving in a two-dimensional open-top vessel under the influence of gravity. This is a free boundary problem: the interface between the fluid in the vessel and the air above (modeled by a trivial fluid) is free to move and experiences capillary forces. The three-phase interface where the fluid, air, and solid vessel wall meet is known as a contact point, and the angle formed between the free interface and the vessel is called the contact angle. We consider a model of this problem that allows for fully dynamic contact points and angles. We develop a scheme of a priori estimates for the model, which then allow us to show that for initial data sufficiently close to equilibrium, the model admits global solutions that decay to equilibrium exponentially fast.

Abstract:This paper is concentrated upon the qualitative analysis of two specific cases of the compressible Euler equations with linear damping: self-balanced non-isentropic system and externally driven isentropic system. We consider initial-boundary value problems of the models on bounded domains in Rd. Both systems are supplemented with the no-normal-flow boundary condition. Under smallness assumptions on the initial perturbation and/or external force, it is shown that non-trivial steady states associated with the initial-boundary value problems are asymptotically stable in the long run.

Abstract:It is well known that the Prandtl boundary layer equation is unstable for general initial data, and is well-posed in Sobolev space for monotonic initial data. Recently, under the Oleinik's monotonicity assumption for the initial datum, R. Alexandre, Y. Wang, C.-J. Xu, and T. Yang [J. Amer. Math. Soc., 28 (2015) pp. 745--784] recovered the local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem in Sobolev space by virtue of an energy method (see also N. Masmoudi and T. K. Wong [Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 68 (2015), pp. 1683--1741.]). In this work, we study the Gevrey smoothing effects of the local solution obtained in R. Alexandre, Y. Wang, C.-J. Xu, and T. Yang [J. Amer. Math. Soc., 28 (2015) pp. 745--784]. We prove that the Sobolev's class solution belongs to some Gevrey class with respect to tangential variables at any positive time.

Abstract:This paper investigates the stability of a fully parabolic–parabolic-fluid (PP-fluid) system of the Keller–Segel–Navier–Stokes type in a bounded planar domain under the natural volume-filling hypothesis. In the limit of fast signal diffusion, we first show that the global classical solutions of the PP-fluid system will converge to the solution of the corresponding parabolic–elliptic-fluid (PE-fluid) system. As a by-product, we obtain the global well-posedness of the PE-fluid system for general large initial data. We also establish some new exponential time decay estimates for suitable small initial cell mass, which in particular ensure an improvement of convergence rate on time. To further explore the stability property, we carry out three numerical examples of different types: the nontrivial and trivial equilibriums, and the rotating aggregation. The simulation results illustrate the possibility to achieve the optimal convergence and show the vanishment of the deviation between the PP-fluid system and PE-fluid system for the equilibriums and the drastic fluctuation of error for the rotating solution.
Long time well-posdness for the 3D Prandtl boundary layer equations without structural assumption

Abstract:This paper is concerned with existence and uniqueness, and stability of the solution for the 3D Prandtl equation in a polynomial weighted Sobolev space. The main novelty of this paper is to directly prove the long time well-posdness to 3D Prandtl equation without any structural assumption by the energy method. Moreover, the solution's lifespan can be extended to any large $T$, provided that the initial data with a perturbation lies in the monotonic shear profile of small size $e^{-T}$. This result improves the work by Xu and Zhang (J. Differential Equations, 263(12)(2017), 8749-8803) on the 2D Prandtl equations, achieving an extension to the three-dimensional case.

Abstract:This paper studies the stability of large data solutions to the 2D fully/partially dissipative Boussinesq systems on the unit square subject to various types of boundary conditions, including dynamic Couette flow. It is shown that under suitable conditions on the boundary data, solutions starting in H3 exist globally in time and the differences between the solutions and their corresponding boundary data converge to zero in certain topology as time goes to infinity. There is no smallness restrictions on initial data.
Stability of a Two-Phase Stokes Problem with Surface Tension

Abstract:In this work, we study the well-posedness of a system of partial differential equations that model the dynamics of a two-dimensional Stokes bubble immersed in two-dimensional ambient Stokes fluid of the same viscosity that extends to infinity under the effect of surface tension. We assume that the two fluids are immiscible and incompressible and that there is no interfacial jump in the fluid velocity. For this PDE system, a circular fluid bubble is a steady-state solution. Given an initial contour for the fluid bubble which is sufficiently close to a circle, we show that there exists a unique, global-in-time solution. This unique solution decays to a circle exponentially fast, which means that circular fluid bubbles are stable steady-state solutions. We also obtain a result concerning the regularity of the unique solution, that although the initial perturbation around a circular contour is assumed to be of low regularity, any later perturbation becomes real analytic, hence smooth.

Abstract:This paper furthers our studies on the stability problem for perturbations near hydrostatic equilibrium of the 2D Boussinesq equations without thermal diffusion and solves some of the problems left open in Doering et al. (Physica D 376(377):144–159, 2018). We focus on the periodic domain to avoid the complications due to the boundary. We present several results at two levels: the linear stability and the nonlinear stability levels. Our linear stability results state that the velocity field (mathbf {u}) associated with any initial perturbation converges uniformly to 0 and the temperature ( heta ) converges to an explicit function depending only on y as t tends to infinity. In addition, we obtain an explicit algebraic convergence rate for the velocity field in the (L^2)-sense. Our nonlinear stability results state that any initial velocity small in (L^2) and any initial temperature small in (L^2) lead to a stable solution of the full nonlinear perturbation equations in large time. Furthermore, we show that the temperature is eventually stratified and converges to a function depending only on y if we know it admits a certain uniform-in-time bound. An explicit decay rate for the velocity in (L^2) is also ensured if we make assumption on the high-order norms of (mathbf {u}) and ( heta ).
