Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of crystalline porous polymer that allows the atomically precise integration of organic units into extended structures with periodic skeletons and ordered nanopores. One important feature of COFs is that they are designable; that is, the geometry and dimensions of the building blocks can be controlled to direct the topological evolution of structural periodicity. The diversity of building blocks and covalent linkage topology schemes make COFs an emerging materials platform for structural control and functional design. Indeed, COF architectures offer confined molecular spaces for the interplay of photons, excitons, electrons, holes, ions and guest molecules, thereby exhibiting unique properties and functions. In this Review, we summarize the major progress in the field of COFs and recent achievements in developing new design principles and synthetic strategies. We highlight cutting-edge functional designs and identify fundamental issues that need to be addressed in conjunction with future research directions from chemistry, physics and materials perspectives.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks(COFs)are crystalline porous polymers constructed by the covalent linkage of building blocks in a predictable pattern.In 2005,Yaghi and co-workers addressed the topological design principles of COFs and synthesized the first example with hexagonal pore channels and layer-by-layer stacking structures.The advent and development of COFs over years have been providing a promising platform across scientific fields as well as opportunities of designing the state-of-art 2D architectures.Given the covalent linkages and organic components,both the chemical and thermal stability of COFs are improved significantly,and the mass density is much lower than the well-known metal-organic frameworks.Different from the amorphous porous organic materials,the long-range ordered structure of COFs can be pre-designed and tailored to realize the specific topological structures and pore properties.In recent years,extensive attention has been gained on COFs' chemistry including building units,topology structures,reaction types,polymerization methods and functional strategies.T hese studies have laid the foundation for the extension of COFs' applications such as gas storage/separation, catalysis, chemosensing,light harvesting,proton conduction and energy storage/transduction.Therefore,COFs not only exhibit the application value of porous organic materials,but also show great potential to challenge the bottlenecks of the emerging energy and environmental issues.In this review,we summarize the milestones in design and synthesis of COFs as well as the major progress achieved in applications,and further address their prospects and challenges in the future development.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are newly emerged crystalline porous polymers with well-defined skeletons and nanopores mainly consisted of light-weight elements (H, B, C, N and O) linked by dynamic covalent bonds. Compared with conventional materials, COFs possess some unique and attractive features, such as large surface area, pre-designable pore geometry, excellent crystallinity, inherent adaptability and high flexibility in structural and functional design, thus exhibiting great potential for various applications. Especially, their large surface area and tunable porosity and π conjugation with unique photoelectric properties will enable COFs to serve as a promising platform for drug delivery, bioimaging, biosensing and theranostic applications. In this review, we trace the evolution of COFs in terms of linkages and highlight the important issues on synthetic method, structural design, morphological control and functionalization. And then we summarize the recent advances of COFs in the biomedical and pharmaceutical sectors and conclude with a discussion of the challenges and opportunities of COFs for biomedical purposes. Although currently still at its infancy stage, COFs as an innovative source have paved a new way to meet future challenges in human healthcare and disease theranostic.

Finally, challenges remaining for this type material for real applications are outlined.

Abstract:Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are an exciting new class of microporous polymers with unprecedented properties in organic material chemistry. They are generally built from rigid, geometrically defined organic building blocks resulting in robust, covalently bonded crystalline networks that extend in two or three dimensions. By strategically combining monomers with specific structures and properties, synthesized COF materials can be fine-tuned and controlled at the atomic level, with unparalleled precision on intrapore chemical environment; moreover, the unusually high pore accessibility allows for easy post-synthetic pore wall modification after the COF is synthesized. Overall, COFs combine high, permanent porosity and surface area with high thermal and chemical stability, crystallinity and customizability, making them ideal candidates for a myriad of promising new solutions in a vast number of scientific fields, with widely varying applications such as gas adsorption and storage, pollutant removal, degradation and separation, advanced filtration, heterogeneous catalysis, chemical sensing, biomedical applications, energy storage and production and a vast array of optoelectronic solutions. This review attempts to give a brief insight on COF history, the overall strategies and techniques for rational COF synthesis and post-synthetic functionalization, as well as a glance at the exponentially growing field of COF research, summarizing their main properties and introducing the numerous technological and industrial state of the art applications, with noteworthy examples found in the literature.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) provide a molecular platform for designing a novel class of functional materials with well-defined structures. A crucial structural parameter is the linkage, which dictates how knot and linker units are connected to form two-dimensional polymers and layer frameworks, shaping ordered π-array and porous architectures. However, the roles of linkage in the development of ordered π electronic structures and functions remain fundamental yet unresolved issues. Here we report the designed synthesis of COFs featuring four representative linkages: hydrazone, imine, azine, and C=C bonds, to elucidate their impacts on the evolution of π electronic structures and functions. Our observations revealed that the hydrazone linkage provides a non-conjugated connection, while imine and azine allow partial π conjugation, and the C=C bond permits full π-conjugation. Importantly, the linkage profoundly influences the control of π electronic structures and functions, unraveling its pivotal role in determining key electronic properties such as bandgap, frontier energy levels, light absorption, luminescence, carrier density and mobility, and magnetic permeability. These findings highlight the significance of linkage chemistry in COFs and offer a general and transformative guidance for designing framework materials to achieve electronic functions.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a class of functional nanoporous materials, not only hold the fundamental characteristics of reticular chemistry but also have advantages of robust covalent connectivity and chromophoric networks with extended π-conjugation. Therefore, the integration of biologically relevant building blocks to form biocompatible COFs through tailor-made design principles will make them highly suitable for biomedical research. Herein, we briefly describe the most important biological applications of nanoscale COFs, such as drug delivery, bioimaging, phototherapy, and antibacterial properties. Finally, the existing challenges and prospects of COF-based nanomaterials for advanced biomedical applications have been discussed.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a type of crystalline organic porous material with specific features and interesting structures, including porosity, large surface area, and biocompatibility. These features enable COFs to be considered as excellent candidates for applications in various fields. Recently, COFs have been widely demonstrated as promising materials for biomedical applications because of their excellent physicochemical properties and ultrathin structures. In this review, we cover the recent progress of COF materials for applications in photodynamic therapy, gene delivery, photothermal therapy, drug delivery, bioimaging, biosensing, and combined therapies. Moreover, the critical challenges and further perspectives with regards to COFs for future biology-facing applications are also discussed.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), synthesized from organic monomers, are porous crystalline polymers. Monomers get attached through strong covalent bonds to form 2D and 3D structures. The adjustable pore size, high stability (chemical and thermal), and metal-free nature of COFs make their applications wider. This review article briefly elaborates the synthesis, types, and applications (catalysis, environmental Remediation, sensors) of COFs. Furthermore, the applications of COFs as biomaterials are comprehensively discussed. There are several reported COFs having good results in anti-cancer and anti-bacterial treatments. At the end, some newly reported COFs having anti-viral and wound healing properties are also discussed.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) represent an exciting new type of porous organic materials, which are ingeniously constructed with organic building units via strong covalent bonds. The well-defined crystalline porous structures together with tailored functionalities have offered the COF materials superior potential in diverse applications, such as gas storage, adsorption, optoelectricity, and catalysis. Since the seminal work of Yaghi and co-workers in 2005, the rapid development in this research area has attracted intensive interest from researchers with diverse expertise. This critical review describes the state-of-the-art development in the design, synthesis, characterisation, and application of the crystalline porous COF materials. Our own opinions on further development of the COF materials are also presented for discussion (155 references).

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as a distinguished class of porous materials. Owing to their ability to be constructed through covalent bonds involving light elements, such as hydrogen, boron, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, COFs offer greater stability and lower cytotoxicity than metal organic frameworks do, addressing critical limitations in in vivo applications. Abstract:<p>Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are porous organic polymeric materials that are composed of organic elements and linked together by the thermodynamically stable covalent bonds. The applications of COFs in energy sector and drug delivery are afforded because of the desirable properties of COFs, such as high stability, low density, large surface area, multidimensionality, porosity, and high‐ordered crystalline structure expanded. In this review COFs are reviewed, from the perspective of different types of reported COFs, different methods for their synthesis, and their potential applications in the biomedical field. The main goal of this review is to introduce COFs as a biomaterial and to identify specific advantages of different types of COFs that can be exploited for specialized biomedical applications, such as immune engineering.</p>

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have historically been of interest to researchers in different areas due to their distinctive characteristics, including well-ordered pores, large specific surface area, and structural tunability. In the past few years, as COF synthesis techniques developed, COF-based composites fabricated by integrating COFs and other functional materials including various kinds of metal or metal oxide nanoparticles, ionic liquids, metal-organic frameworks, silica, polymers, enzymes and carbon nanomaterials have emerged as a novel kind of porous hybrid material. Herein, we first provide a thorough summary of advanced strategies for preparing COF-based composites; then, the emerging applications of COF-based composites in diverse fields due to their synergistic effects are systematically highlighted, including analytical chemistry (sensing, extraction, membrane separation, and chromatographic separation) and catalysis. Finally, the current challenges associated with future perspectives of COF-based composites are also briefly discussed to inspire the advancement of more COF-based composites with excellent properties.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of crystalline porous polymers in which organic building blocks are covalently and topologically linked to form extended crystalline polygon structures, constituting a new platform for designing π-electronic porous materials. However, COFs are currently synthesised by a few chemical reactions, limiting the access to and exploration of new structures and properties. The development of new reaction systems that avoid such limitations to expand structural diversity is highly desired. Here we report that COFs can be synthesised via a double-stage connection that polymerises various different building blocks into crystalline polygon architectures, leading to the development of a new type of COFs with enhanced structural complexity and diversity. We show that the double-stage approach not only controls the sequence of building blocks but also allows fine engineering of pore size and shape. This strategy is widely applicable to different polymerisation systems to yield hexagonal, tetragonal and rhombus COFs with predesigned pores and π-arrays.

Porous organic materials, exhibit unique features and therefore, they can potentially be used in diverse applications such as catalyst, molecular sensing, drug delivery, gas storage, etc. The first reports on metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were published by Yaghi and co-workers in 2005 and after that, these structures have attracted intensive interest from researchers due to their unique properties such as high surface area, low density, high thermal and chemical stability, uniformity and high porosity, and thousands of new frameworks have since been synthesized. This review describes the latest developments in the design, synthesis, and application of COFs in gas storage, catalyst, adsorption, enrichment and purification of small molecules, optoelectricity, molecular sensing, drug delivery, conductive membrane, novel coatings and energy storage. Also we really hope that this review will arouse more scholars' attention to the industrialization of COFs.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) constitute a class of highly functional porous materials characterized by ordered structures, high crystallinity, and a substantial specific surface area, primarily composed of light atoms such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and borane interconnected through covalent bonds. The integration of naturally occurring porphyrin molecules, renowned for their inherent rigidity and conjugate planarity, as building blocks in COFs has garnered significant attention. This strategic incorporation addresses the limitations associated with free-standing porphyrins, resulting in the creation of well-organized porous crystal structures with molecular-level directional arrangements. The unique optical, electrical, and biochemical properties inherent to porphyrin molecules endow these COFs with diversified applications, particularly in the realm of biology. This review comprehensively explores the synthesis and modulation strategies employed in the development of porphyrin-based COFs and delves into their multifaceted applications in biological contexts. A chronological depiction of the evolution from design to application is presented, accompanied by an analysis of the existing challenges. Furthermore, this review offers directional guidance for the structural design of porphyrin-based COFs and underscores their promising prospects in the field of biology.

Low density, large specific surface area, adjustable porosity, simple and diverse synthesis routes, designable functional units and structures, easy functionalization of surface and pore channels, and high physicochemical stability are the main characteristics of COFs. It has received extensive attention in molecular adsorption and separation, energy storage, photoelectricity, sensing, catalysis, chromatography materials, water treatment materials and biomedicine domains. This paper focuses on the recent research progress of COFs over bar based nanosystems in biomedical fields, such as biological detection and imaging, drug delivery, optical therapy and combination therapy, and finally summarize the current challenges and future development opportunities of COFs in biomedical field.

Abstract:As a newly emerging crystalline porous materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) possess fascinating structures and some specific features such as modularity, crystallinity, porosity, stability, versatility, and biocompatibility. Besides adsorption/separation, sensing, catalysis and energy, COFs recently show a new trend in biomedical application. This contribution provides an overview of recent developments of COF-based medicines in cancer therapeutics, including drug delivery, photodynamic therapy (PDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), and combined therapy. Furthermore, major challenges and developing trend in this field are also discussed. These recent developments are summarized and discussed to help encourage further contributions in this emerging and promising field.
