Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) graphene-like materials are promising candidates for energy storage applications because of their unique characteristics such as expansive surface area and high thermodynamic stability. A recently discovered structure, net-Y, exhibits high performance in heat transport and possesses almost all of the aforementioned desirable properties. However, net-Y’s 2D structure has weak van der Waals interaction due to its specific bonding network. To mprove its hydrogen storage capacity, we proposed a novel composite structure by decorating Li atoms upon the net-Y. Its electronic properties have been systematically studied using first-principles calculations. It was found that the added Li atom can be firmly anchored on the net-Y with an adsorption energy of -1.82 eV. The Li atom transferred its partial 2s electrons to the net-Y. Each primitive cell of Li@Net-Y can adsorb up to 8 H2 molecules and the corresponding storage capacity can be as high as 15.4 wt%. This capacity significantly exceeds the target value of 5.5 wt% set by the U.S. Department of Energy. Moreover, the average adsorption energy of -0.236 eV/H2 falls within the window of room temperature reversible hydrogen-storage energy range. This study highlights the metal decorated net-Y’s potential for hydrogen storage, inspiring further advancements along this direction.
